We characterize the electrical performance and reliabilities as potential space electronic parts under extreme low and high temperature environments extending nominal device specifications.

Recent studies of leading-edge vortex flows with computational fluid dynamics codes using Euler or Navier-Stokes formulations have shown fair agreement with experimental data. These studies have concentrated on simulating the flowfields associated with a sharp-edged flat plate 70 deg delta wing at angles of attack where vortex breakdown or burst is observed over the wing. There are, however, a number of discrepancies between the experimental data and the computed flowfields. The location of vortex breakdown in the computational solutions is seen to differ from the experimental data and to vary with changes in the computational grid and freestream Mach number. There also remain issues as to the validity of steady-state computations for cases which contain regions of unsteady flow, such as in the post-breakdown regions. As a partial response to these questions, a number of laminar Navier-Stokes solutions were examined for the 70 deg delta wing. The computed solutions are compared with an experimental database obtained at low subsonic speeds. The convergence of forces, moments and vortex breakdown locations are also analyzed to determine if the computed flowfields actually reach steady-state conditions.

The steady-state transonic viscous flows over two wing-fuselage configurations are solved numerically. The 3D compressible thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations are solved by means of multistage timestepping similar to the Runge-Kutta method. The timestepping technique is applied with a multigrid scheme to make the transonic Navier-Stokes computations using the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence for closure and converging the solution on a grid of 1.52 million grid points with a C-O topology. Both generic and fighter wing-fuselage geometries are solved, and the results are compared to experimental studies. Solution convergence is found to be fast, and the fine grid generates accurate results for both configurations by means of the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model. Results from the Johnson-King model calculations produce results that are more consistent with experimental results for the fighter configuration.

An evaluation was made of the applicability and benefits of laminar flow control (LFC) technology to supersonic cruise airplanes. Ancillary objectives were to identify the technical issues critical to supersonic LFC application, and to determine how those issues can be addressed through flight and wind-tunnel testing. Vehicle types studied include a Mach 2.2 supersonic transport configuration, a Mach 4.0 transport, and two Mach 2-class fighter concepts. Laminar flow control methodologies developed for subsonic and transonic wing laminarization were extended and applied. No intractible aerodynamic problems were found in applying LFC to airplanes of the Mach 2 class, even ones of large size. Improvements of 12 to 17 percent in lift-drag ratios were found. Several key technical issues, such as contamination avoidance and excresence criteria were identified. Recommendations are made for their resolution. A need for an inverse supersonic wing design methodology is indicated.

A 7475 aluminum alloy was developed for superplastic forming (SPF). By lowering the Fe and Si contents in this alloy significantly below their normal levels and optimizing the thermomechanical processing to produce sheet, over 2000 percent thickness strain to failure was obtained. The microstructure, elevated-temperature uniaxial and biaxial tension, and cavitation behavior of the alloy were determined. In addition, a constitutive model was used to form a generic structural shape from which mechanical test specimens were removed and post-SPF characteristics were evaluated. The constitutive model included both material strain hardening and strain rate hardening effects, and was verified by accurately predicting forming cycles which resulted in successful component forming. Stress-life fatigue, stress rupture, and room and elevated temperature tensile tests were conducted on the formed material.

Past studies have revealed solar cycle changes in the sunspot activity, as well as in many other solar parameters, such as, solar flares and solar coronal holes. These solar features in turn produce the observed cyclic variations in the interplanetary plasma and fields. Both the cosmic ray intensity as well as the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances are affected by the interplanetary changes and produce 11/22 year periodicity. An anomalous situation has been noticed during the year 1980 (period of high sunspot activity), when both the geomagnetic disturbance index Ap, as well as the magnitude and number of Forbush decreases as small. Such an anomaly occurs, in spite of the fact that both the sunspot numbers and the energetic solar flares are almost maximum during the present solar cycle.

A monthly Forbush decrease index (Fd-I) is generated and it is compared with the observed long term chnges in the cosmic ray intensity near earth at energies greater than or equal to 1 Gev over 1976-83. Significant correlation is observed between the two except for 1978. Such an effect is also seen in the correlation plot between the solar flare index (SFI) and Fd-I.

The high speed solar wind streams observed near Earth are generally associated with the solar features, such as solar flares and coronal holes. Past studies of these streams from the two sources have revealed distinctly different effects on cosmic ray intensity, whereas the effect is similar for geomagnetic disturbances. Moreover, the effect of the magnitude of the high speed streams (V) and its rate of increase (dv/dt) has also been a subject of investigation to understand their relative contribution in producing geomagnetic disturbances. From the analysis of some of the fast streams presented here, it is difficult to predict, which one of the two (V, dv/dt) is more effective in producing geo-magnetic disturbances. Further, in most of the cases, no substantial decrease in cosmic ray intensity is observed.

Recently, the importance of the occurrence of solar flares in the long-term modulation of cosmic ray intensity has been re-emphasized. For this purpose, the data of solar flares have been used from various publications, such as Solar Geophysical Data books, U.A.G. reports and Quarterly Bulletin Of Solar Activity. Research very clearly reveals that even the periodic changes in the solar flare observations, obtained from the four different data sources, for the same interval, differ significantly from one another; this is evidenced even on an average basis. Hence, in any study using solar flares, the importance of selecting a single compilation of the solar-flare data for the entire period of investigation is stressed.

Neutron monitor data has been analyzed to study the nature of galactic cosmic ray transient modulation associated with three types of interplanetary magnetic clouds - clouds associated with shocks, stream interfaces and cold magnetic enhancements.

The distribution of cosmic ray intensity perpendicular to solar equatorial plane, was investigated by using its yearly variation with respect to the heliolatitudinal position of the Earth, for the two intervals 1978 to 1980 and 1981 to 1983. The monthly mean values of two high latitude stations along with the solar and geomagnetic indices are used to derive the cosmic ray intensity distribution free from the changes due to variation in solar activity. The correction is found to be significant only during the interval 1976 to 1980. The results indicate a significant linear increase in cosmic ray intensity from north to south of solar equator, contrary to that observed during 1973 to 1975. No symmetrical gradients are found during the period of study, in agreement with earlier results.

Earlier studies of the periodic changes in cosmic ray intensity by power spectral analysis provided some understanding of the daily variation in terms of ambient power. The solar rotation periodicities are investigated, using daily means of calgary neutron monitor data during 1965 to 1976. Significant peaks with periods of 27 and 13.5 days with varying magnitudes are observed.

Papers are presented on the application of fracture mechanics to spacecraft design, fracture control applications on the Space Shuttle reaction control thrusters, and an assessment of fatigue crack growth rate relationships for metallic airframe materials. Also considered are fracture mechanisms and microstructural relationships in Ni-base alloy systems, the use of surface deformation markings to determine crack propagation directions, case histories of metallurgical failures in the electronics industry, and a failure analysis of silica phenolic nozzle liners.

A study of cosmic ray intensity variations using data registered by Detector C on Pioneer 10 and the Sulphur Mountain neutron monitor is presented. The spacecraft data were corrected for temperature, Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator background, and contamination by energetic solar particle events. A consistent long-term solar cycle variation intensity is observed, but additional contribution is observed in the neighborhood of 5.1 AU which is attributed to energetic electrons of Jovian origin. The spectral variation in long-term changes of the cosmic ray intensity is studied by comparing the low-energy and high-energy data, and an average value of their ratio during 1972-1977 was found to agree with the value for the 1965-1972 interval.

A relationship between the (North-South) asymmetry in the areas of the solar polar coronal holes and the (North-South) anisotropy in the cosmic ray intensity is examined. The investigation was extended over a period of two years, using ground based observations of coronal brightness obtained by the K-Coronameter. Periods for study of cosmic ray variations were chosen maximizing the asymmetry of the polar coronal holes. The importance of the role played by coronal holes in the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays is emphasized.
