The 1-point matter density probability distribution function (PDF) captures some of the non-Gaussian information lost in standard 2-point statistics. The matter PDF can be well predicted at mildly non-linear scales using large deviations theory. This work extends those predictions to biased tracers like dark matter halos and the galaxies they host. We model the conditional PDF of tracer counts given matter density using a tracer bias and stochasticity model previously used for photometric data. We find accurate parametrisations for tracer bias with a smoothing scale-independent 2-parameter Gaussian Lagrangian bias model and a quadratic shot noise. We relate those bias and stochasticity parameters to the one for the power spectrum and tracer-matter covariances. We validate the model against the Quijote suite of N-body simulations and find excellent agreement for both halo and galaxy density PDFs and their cosmology dependence. We demonstrate the constraining power of the tracer PDFs and their complementarity to power spectra through a Fisher forecast. We focus on the cosmological parameters $\sigma_8$ and $\Omega_m$ as well as linear bias parameters, finding that the strength of the tracer PDF lies in disentangling tracer bias from cosmology. Our results show promise for applications to spectroscopic clustering data when augmented with a redshift space distortion model, Comment: 25 pages, 26 figures

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Many observables in 4d $\mathcal N=4$ SYM with Gaiotto-Witten boundary conditions can be described exactly by matrix models via supersymmetric localization. The boundaries typically introduce new degrees of freedom, through a reduction of the gauge symmetry on the boundary or as explicit boundary degrees of freedom, leading to non-trivial matrix models. We derive the saddle points dominating these matrix models at large $N$, expressed in terms of generalized Lambert W-functions. In string theory the BCFTs are realized by D3-branes ending on D5 and NS5 branes. We independently derive the saddle points from the holographic duals with $\rm AdS_4\times S^2\times S^2\times\Sigma$ geometry and provide precision tests of the dualities., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
This paper explores pedestrian trajectory prediction in urban traffic while focusing on both model accuracy and real-world applicability. While promising approaches exist, they are often not publicly available, revolve around pedestrian datasets excluding traffic-related information, or resemble architectures that are either not real-time capable or robust. To address these limitations, we first introduce a dedicated benchmark based on Argoverse 2, specifically targeting pedestrians in urban settings. Following this, we present Snapshot, a modular, feed-forward neural network that outperforms the current state of the art while utilizing significantly less information. Despite its agent-centric encoding scheme, Snapshot demonstrates scalability, real-time performance, and robustness to varying motion histories. Moreover, by integrating Snapshot into a modular autonomous driving software stack, we showcase its real-world applicability, Comment: 8 Pages, 9 Figures

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
4d $\mathcal N=4$ SYM admits half-BPS boundaries, defects and interfaces as well as compactifications to 3d $\mathcal N\,{=}\,4$ SCFTs, realized as intersections of D3, D5 and NS5 branes. We explore operators with large R-charge. We identify Penrose limits in the holographic duals with geometry $\rm AdS_4\times S^2\times S^2\times\Sigma$, which describe, for each theory, a spectrum of `seed' operators which each give rise to a BMN-like sector described by a pp-wave. We relate the number of BMN-like sectors to the flavor symmetry of the CFT. For a sample of theories including the Janus interface, D3/D5 BCFTs and BCFTs with 3d SCFTs on the boundary, we determine the spectra of nearby operators and discuss the field theory realization of the seed operators. We further identify families of Penrose limits which give rise to more general pp-wave sectors., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
Ultralight candidates for dark matter can present wavelike features on astrophysical scales. Full wave based simulations of such candidates are currently limited to box sizes of 1--10 Mpc/$h$ on a side, limiting our understanding of the impact of wave dynamics on the scale of the cosmic web. We present a statistical analysis of density fields produced by perturbative forward models in boxes of 128 Mpc/$h$ side length. Our wave-based perturbation theory maintains interference on all scales, and is compared to fluid dynamics of Lagrangian perturbation theory. The impact of suppressed power in the initial conditions and interference effects caused by wave dynamics can then be disentangled. We find that changing the initial conditions captures most of the change in one-point statistics such as the skewness of the density field. However, different environments of the cosmic web, quantified by critical points of the smoothed density, appear to be more sensitive to interference effects sourced by the quantum potential. This suggests that certain large-scale summary statistics may need additional care when studying cosmologies with wavelike dark matter., Comment: Accepted in Open Journal of Astrophysics, 15 pages + appendices, 16 figures

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. We also highlight the main science objectives and expected performance., Comment: Accepted for publication in the A&A special issue`Euclid on Sky'

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
In this work, we demonstrate the constraining power of the tomographic weak lensing convergence PDF for StageIV-like source galaxy redshift bins and shape noise. We focus on scales of $10$ to $20$ arcmin in the mildly nonlinear regime, where the convergence PDF and its changes with cosmological parameters can be predicted theoretically. We model the impact of reconstructing the convergence from the shear field using the well-known Kaiser-Squires formalism. We cross-validate the predicted and the measured convergence PDF derived from convergence maps reconstructed using simulated shear catalogues. Employing a Fisher forecast, we determine the constraining power for $(\Omega_{m},S_{8},w_{0})$. We find that adding a 5-bin tomography improves the $\kappa-$PDF constraints by a factor of $\{3.8,1.3,1.6\}$ for $(\Omega_{m}, S_{8},w_{0})$ respectively. Additionally, we perform a joint analysis with the shear two-point correlation functions, finding an enhancement of around a factor of $1.5$ on all parameters with respect to the two-point statistics alone. These improved constraints come from disentangling $\Omega_{\rm m}$ from $w_0$ by extracting non-Gaussian information, in particular, including the PDF skewness at different redshift bins. We also study the effect of varying the number of parameters to forecast, in particular we add $h$, finding that the convergence PDF maintains its constraining power while the precision from two-point correlations degrades by a factor of $\{1.7,1.4,1.8\}$ for $\{\Omega_{\rm m},S_8,w_0\}$, respectively., Comment: 23 pages, 21 figures

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We construct Type IIB string theory setups which, via double holography, realize two gravitational systems in separate AdS spaces which interact with each other and with a non-gravitational bath. We employ top-down string theory solutions with concrete field theory duals in the form of 4d $\mathcal N=4$ SYM BCFTs and a first-principles notion of double holography. The setups are used to realize pairs of `near' and `far' black holes from the perspective of the bath, which exchange Hawking radiation with each other and radiate into the bath. We identify three phases for the entropy in the bath characterized as no island, partial island and full island, and discuss the entropy curves. The setups differ from the black hole binaries observed in gravitational wave experiments but may capture certain aspects., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures; v2: references added, published version

Computer Science - Robotics - Abstract
While current research and development of autonomous driving primarily focuses on developing new features and algorithms, the transfer from isolated software components into an entire software stack has been covered sparsely. Besides that, due to the complexity of autonomous software stacks and public road traffic, the optimal validation of entire stacks is an open research problem. Our paper targets these two aspects. We present our autonomous research vehicle EDGAR and its digital twin, a detailed virtual duplication of the vehicle. While the vehicle's setup is closely related to the state of the art, its virtual duplication is a valuable contribution as it is crucial for a consistent validation process from simulation to real-world tests. In addition, different development teams can work with the same model, making integration and testing of the software stacks much easier, significantly accelerating the development process. The real and virtual vehicles are embedded in a comprehensive development environment, which is also introduced. All parameters of the digital twin are provided open-source at https://github.com/TUMFTM/edgar_digital_twin.

Computer Science - Machine Learning ,Computer Science - Robotics - Abstract
In this paper, we assess the state of the art in pedestrian trajectory prediction within the context of generating single trajectories, a critical aspect aligning with the requirements in autonomous systems. The evaluation is conducted on the widely-used ETH/UCY dataset where the Average Displacement Error (ADE) and the Final Displacement Error (FDE) are reported. Alongside this, we perform an ablation study to investigate the impact of the observed motion history on prediction performance. To evaluate the scalability of each approach when confronted with varying amounts of agents, the inference time of each model is measured. Following a quantitative analysis, the resulting predictions are compared in a qualitative manner, giving insight into the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches. The results demonstrate that although a constant velocity model (CVM) provides a good approximation of the overall dynamics in the majority of cases, additional features need to be incorporated to reflect common pedestrian behavior observed. Therefore, this study presents a data-driven analysis with the intent to guide the future development of pedestrian trajectory prediction algorithms., Comment: Accepted in IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems (T-ITS); 11 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
The last few years have seen the development of a promising theoretical framework for statistics of the cosmic large-scale structure -- the theory of large deviations (LDT) for modelling weak-lensing one-point statistics in the mildly non-linear regime. The goal of this series of papers is to make the leap and lay out the steps to perform an actual data analysis with this theoretical tool. Building upon the LDT framework, in this work (Paper I) we demonstrate how to accurately model the Probability Distribution Function (PDF) of a reconstructed Kaiser-Squires convergence field under a realistic mask, that of the third data release of the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We also present how weak lensing systematics and higher-order lensing corrections due to intrinsic alignments, shear biases, photo-$z$ errors and baryonic feedback can be incorporated in the modelling of the reconstructed convergence PDF. In an upcoming work (Paper II) we will then demonstrate the robustness of our modelling through simulated likelihood analyses, the final step required before applying our method to actual data., Comment: 39 pages, 9 figures and 2 tables. We discuss entanglement entropies in 4d interface CFTs based on 4d $\mathcal N=4$ SYM coupled to 3d $\mathcal N=4$ degrees of freedom localized on an interface. Focusing on the entanglement between the two half spaces to either side of the interface, we show that applying the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription in general leads to multiple natural entanglement entropies. We interpret the different entropies as corresponding to different ways of assigning the 3d degrees of freedom localized on the interface to the two half spaces. We contrast these findings with recent discussions of universal relations for entanglement entropies in 2d interface CFTs and formulate generalized relations for 4d interface CFTs which incorporate our results., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures; v2: published version

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We use a combination of AdS/CFT and supersymmetric localization to study codimension-2 defects in 5d SCFTs and their gauge theory deformations. The 5d SCFTs are engineered by $(p,q)$ 5-brane webs, with defects realized by D3-branes ending on the 5-brane webs. We obtain the defect free energies and find that gauge theory descriptions of the combined 5d/3d systems can be connected to the UV defect SCFTs through a form of F-maximization which extremizes over different gauge theory defects. This leads to a match between the defect free energies obtained from supersymmetric localization in the gauge theories on the one hand and string theory results on the other. We extend this match to defect RG flows., Comment: 40 pages, 10 figures; v2: references added, published version

Higher-order solitons inherently possess a spatial periodicity along the propagation axis. The pulse expands and compresses in both, frequency and time domain. This property is exploited for a bandwidth-limited receiver by sampling the optical signal at two different distances. Numerical simulations show that when pure solions are transmitted and the second (i.e., further propagated) signal is also processed, a significant gain in terms of required receiver bandwidth is obtained. Since all pulses propagating in a nonlinear optical fiber exhibit solitonic behavior given sufficient input power and propagation distance, the above concept can also be applied to spectrally efficient Nyquist pulse shaping and higher symbol rates. Transmitter and receiver are trainable structures as part of an autoencoder, aiming to learn a suitable predistortion and post-equalization using both signals to increase the spectral efficiency.

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
Recent cosmic shear studies have shown that higher-order statistics (HOS) developed by independent teams now outperform standard two-point estimators in terms of statistical precision thanks to their sensitivity to the non-Gaussian features of large-scale structure. The aim of the Higher-Order Weak Lensing Statistics (HOWLS) project is to assess, compare, and combine the constraining power of ten different HOS on a common set of $Euclid$-like mocks, derived from N-body simulations. In this first paper of the HOWLS series, we computed the nontomographic ($\Omega_{\rm m}$, $\sigma_8$) Fisher information for the one-point probability distribution function, peak counts, Minkowski functionals, Betti numbers, persistent homology Betti numbers and heatmap, and scattering transform coefficients, and we compare them to the shear and convergence two-point correlation functions in the absence of any systematic bias. We also include forecasts for three implementations of higher-order moments, but these cannot be robustly interpreted as the Gaussian likelihood assumption breaks down for these statistics. Taken individually, we find that each HOS outperforms the two-point statistics by a factor of around two in the precision of the forecasts with some variations across statistics and cosmological parameters. When combining all the HOS, this increases to a $4.5$ times improvement, highlighting the immense potential of HOS for cosmic shear cosmological analyses with $Euclid$. The data used in this analysis are publicly released with the paper., Comment: 33 pages, 24 figures, main results in Fig. 19 & Table 5, version published in A&A

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We quantitatively address the following question: for a QFT which is partially compactified, so as to realize an RG flow from a $D$-dimensional CFT in the UV to a $d$-dimensional CFT in the IR, how does the entanglement entropy of a small spherical region probing the UV physics evolve as the size of the region grows to increasingly probe IR physics? This entails a generalization of spherical regions to setups without full Lorentz symmetry, and we study the associated entanglement entropies holographically. We find a tight interplay between the topology and geometry of the compact space and the evolution of the entanglement entropy, with universal transitions from `cap' through `bridge' and `corner' phases, whose features reflect the details of the compact space. As concrete examples we discuss twisted compactifications of 4d ${\cal N}=4$ SYM on $T^2$, $S^2$ and hyperbolic Riemann surfaces., Comment: 33 pages, 17 figures

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
Key non-Gaussian properties of cosmological fields can be captured by their one-point statistics, providing a complement to two-point statistical measurements from power spectra or correlation functions. Large deviation theory can robustly predict the one-point statistics of cosmological density fields on mildly non-linear scales from first principles. It provides a direct prediction for the cumulant generating function (CGF) of such fields, from which a prediction for the more commonly used probability density function (PDF) is extracted through an inverse Laplace transform. For joint one-point statistics of multiple fields, the inverse Laplace transform rapidly becomes more cumbersome and computationally expensive. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time that the weak lensing CGF itself can be used as an observable that captures an equal amount of cosmological information to the PDF. While we use the weak-lensing convergence field as a simplistic and instructive example, this work is intended as a first step towards a cosmological analysis based on large deviation theory in the context of a nulling framework, which excludes contributions from small scales to facilitate highly accurate theoretical predictions. In this context, the method should be generally applicable for a multi-scale tomographic analysis of weak lensing and galaxy clustering., Comment: Accepted by the Open Journal of Astrophysics

$\mathbb{Z}_n$ S-folds of 5d SCFTs, including $T_N$, which lead to brane webs with $E_{6,7,8}$ 7-branes were discussed recently. We generalize the construction to `fractional quotients', which are based on $\mathbb{Z}_n$ actions linking multiple copies of the seed theory and lead to $H_{0,1,2}$ 7-branes. We provide the holographic duals for both classes. This expands the space of explicitly known Type IIB $\rm AdS_6$ solutions by incorporating F-theory 7-branes of type $E_{6,7,8}$ and $H_{0,1,2}$, extending previous constructions for O7-planes. Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
One-point probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the cosmic matter density are powerful cosmological probes that extract non-Gaussian properties of the matter distribution and complement two-point statistics. Computing the covariance of one-point PDFs is key for building a robust galaxy survey analysis for upcoming surveys like Euclid and the Rubin Observatory LSST and requires good models for the two-point PDFs characterising spatial correlations. In this work, we obtain accurate PDF covariances using effective shifted lognormal two-point PDF models for the mildly non-Gaussian weak lensing convergence and validate our predictions against large sets of Gaussian and non-Gaussian maps. We show how the dominant effects in the covariance matrix capturing super-sample covariance arise from a large-separation expansion of the two-point PDF and discuss differences between the covariances obtained from small patches and full sky maps. Finally, we describe how our formalism can be extended to characterise the PDF covariance for 3D-dimensional spectroscopic fields using the 3D matter PDF as an example. We describe how covariances from simulated boxes with fixed overall density can be supplemented with the missing super-sample covariance effect by relying on theoretical predictions validated against separate-universe style simulations., Comment: 29 pages, 24 figures

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We explore the notion of $c$-functions in renormalization group flows between theories in different spacetime dimensions. We discuss functions connecting central charges of the UV and IR fixed point theories on the one hand, and functions which are monotonic along the flow on the other. First, using the geometric properties of the holographic dual RG flows across dimensions and the constraints from the null energy condition, we construct a monotonic holographic $c$-function and thereby establish a holographic $c$-theorem across dimensions. Second, we use entanglement entropies for two different types of entangling regions in a field theory along the RG flow across dimensions to construct candidate $c$-functions which satisfy one of the two criteria but not both. In due process we also discuss an interesting connection between corner contributions to the entanglement entropy and the topology of the compact internal space. As concrete examples for both approaches, we holographically study twisted compactifications of 4d $\mathcal N=4$ SYM and compactifications of 6d $\mathcal N=(2,0)$ theories., Comment: 49 pages, 17 figures; v2: minor corrections

Pulse shaping for coherent optical fiber communication has been an active area of research for the past decade. Most of the early schemes are based on classic Nyquist pulse shaping that was originally intended for linear channels. The best known classic scheme, the split digital back-propagation (DBP), uses joint pre-distortion and post equalization and hence, a nonlinear transmitter (TX); it, however, suffers from spectral broadening on the fiber due to the Kerr-effect. With the advent of deep learning in communications, it has been realized that an Autoencoder can learn to communicate efficiently over the optical fiber channel, jointly optimizing geometric constellations and pulse shaping - while also taking into account linear and nonlinear impairments such as chromatic dispersion and Kerr-nonlinearity. E.g., arXiv:2006.15027 shows how an Autoencoder can learn to mitigate spectral broadening due to the Kerr-effect using a trainable linear TX. In this paper, we extend this linear architectural template to a scalable nonlinear pulse shaping consisting of a Convolutional Neural Network at both transmitter and receiver. By introducing a novel $\gamma$-lifting training procedure tailored to the nonlinear optical fiber channel, we achieve stable Autoencoder convergence to pulse shapes reaching information rates outperforming the classic split DBP reference at high input powers., Comment: Accepted (09.03.2022) for presentation at the 23rd IEEE/ITG-Symposium on Photonic Networks, Berlin, Germany, 18-19.05.2022

The classical dynamics of collisionless cold dark matter, commonly described by fluid variables or a phase-space distribution, can be captured in a single semiclassical wavefunction. We illustrate how classical multi-streaming creates wave interference in a toy model corresponding to the dynamics of the Zel'dovich approximation and link it to diffraction optics. Wave interference dresses the classical skeleton of cold dark matter with universal features akin to the physical imprints of wavelike (or fuzzy) dark matter. We untangle this wave interference to obtain single-stream wavefunctions corresponding to the classical fluid streams, by writing the wavefunction in an integral form. Our wave decomposition captures the full phase-space information and isolates the multi-stream phenomena related to vorticity and velocity dispersion. We link the wave interference features of our system to the standard forms of diffraction catastrophe integrals, which produce bright caustics in optical fields analogous to the cold dark matter density field. Our two complementary descriptions of dark matter wave-fields present rich universal features that can unlock new ways of modelling and probing wavelike dark matter on the scales of the cosmic web., Comment: Accepted in Open Journal of Astrophysics, 20 pages + appendices, 16 figures

We develop the notion of double holography in Type IIB string theory realizations of braneworld models. The Type IIB setups are based on the holographic duals of 4d BCFTs comprising 4d $\mathcal N=4$ SYM on a half space coupled to 3d $\mathcal N=4$ SCFTs on the boundary. Based on the concrete BCFTs and their brane construction, we provide microscopic realizations of the intermediate holographic description, obtained by dualizing only the 3d degrees of freedom. Triggered by recent observations in bottom-up models, we discuss the causal structures in the full BCFT duals and intermediate descriptions. We study Wilson loops in string theory realizations of AdS/BCFT and wedge holography. The field theories are based on 3d $\mathcal N=4$ long quiver gauge theories engineered by D3, D5 and NS5 branes, and on BCFTs involving 4d $\mathcal N=4$ SYM coupled to such 3d theories. The holographic duals have geometry $AdS_4\times S^2\times S^2$ warped over a strip. We identify the holographic representation of antisymmetric Wilson loops associated with individual 3d gauge nodes in terms of probe D5-branes. The expectation values obtained holographically are matched to supersymmetric localization computations. Our results yield an identification of regions in the internal space with individual 3d gauge nodes. Connecting to bottom-up braneworld models, this gives a concrete notion of which parts of the 10d solutions correspond to the end-of-the-world brane and which to the remaining bulk. Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
The late universe contains a wealth of information about fundamental physics and gravity, wrapped up in non-Gaussian fields. To make use of as much information as possible it is necessary to go beyond two-point statistics. Rather than going to higher order N-point correlation functions, we demonstrate that the probability distribution function (PDF) of spheres in the matter field (a one-point function) already contains a significant amount of this non-Gaussian information. The matter PDF dissects different density environments which are lumped together in two-point statistics, making it particularly useful for probing modifications of gravity or expansion history. Our approach in Cataneo et. al. 2021 extends the success of Large Deviation Theory for predicting the matter PDF in $\Lambda$CDM in these ''extended'' cosmologies. A Fisher forecast demonstrates the information content in the matter PDF via constraints for a Euclid-like survey volume combining the 3D matter PDF with the 3D matter power spectrum. Adding the matter PDF halves the uncertainties on parameters in an evolving dark energy model, relative to the power spectrum alone. Additionally, the matter PDF contains enough non-linear information to substantially increase the detection significance of departures from General Relativity, with improvements up to six times the power spectrum alone. This analysis demonstrates that the matter PDF is a promising non-Gaussian statistic for extracting cosmological information, particularly for beyond $\Lambda$CDM models., Comment: Conference proceedings submitted to special issue of Universe: Alternative Gravities and Fundamental Cosmology. 11 pages, 6 figures

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Holographic duals for CFTs compactified on a Riemann surface $\Sigma$ with a twist are cast in the language of wedge holography. $\Sigma$ starts as part of the field theory geometry in the UV and becomes part of the internal space in the IR. This allows to associate entanglement entropies with splits of the internal space in the IR geometry. Decomposing the internal space in the IR and geometrizing the corresponding subsystems separately leads to two interacting gravitational systems, similar to the intermediate holographic description in braneworld models. For $\Sigma=T^2$ the setups are used to model information transfer from a black hole to a gravitating bath. This leads to Page curves with a phase structure which precisely mirrors that in braneworld models. We discuss infinite families of non-supersymmetric AdS$_6$ solutions in Type IIB string theory. They are siblings of supersymmetric solutions which are associated with $(p,q)$ 5-brane webs and holographically dual to 5d SCFTs engineered by those brane webs. The non-supersymmetric backgrounds carry identical 5-brane charges and are connected to the supersymmetric ones by RG flows. We study the stability of the non-supersymmetric solutions, identifying perturbative and non-perturbative decay channels for all the backgrounds explicitly available. We also identify likely decay mechanisms for solutions that have not been constructed explicitly but may be expected to exist based on brane web considerations. Finally, we exclude scale separation by constructing universal spin 2 modes with masses comparable to the mass-scale of the cosmological constant., Comment: 49 pages, 9 figures

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
We present an analytical description of the probability distribution function (PDF) of the smoothed three-dimensional matter density field for modified gravity and dark energy. Our approach, based on the principles of Large Deviations Theory, is applicable to general extensions of the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. We show that late-time changes to the law of gravity and background expansion can be included through Einstein-de Sitter spherical collapse dynamics combined with linear theory calculations and a calibration measurement of the non-linear variance of the smoothed density field from a simple numerical simulation. In a comparison to $N$-body simulations for $f(R)$, DGP and evolving dark energy theories, we find percent level accuracy around the peak of the distribution for predictions in the mildly non-linear regime. A Fisher forecast of an idealised experiment with a Euclid-like survey volume demonstrates the power of combining measurements of the 3D matter PDF with the 3D matter power spectrum. This combination is shown to halve the uncertainty on parameters for an evolving dark energy model, relative to a power spectrum analysis on its own. The PDF is also found to substantially increase the detection significance for small departures from General Relativity, with improvements of up to six times compared to the power spectrum alone. This analysis is therefore very promising for future studies including non-Gaussian statistics, as it has the potential to alleviate the reliance of these analyses on expensive high resolution simulations and emulators., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables. Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
We study the connection of matter density and its tracers from the PDF perspective. One aspect of this connection is the conditional expectation value $\langle \delta_{\mathrm{tracer}}|\delta_m\rangle$ when averaging both tracer and matter density over some scale. We present a new way to incorporate a Lagrangian bias expansion of this expectation value into standard frameworks for modelling the PDF of density fluctuations and counts-in-cells statistics. Using N-body simulations and mock galaxy catalogs we confirm the accuracy of this expansion and compare it to the more commonly used Eulerian parametrization. For halos hosting typical luminous red galaxies, the Lagrangian model provides a significantly better description of $\langle \delta_{\mathrm{tracer}}|\delta_m\rangle$ at second order in perturbations. A second aspect of the matter-tracer connection is shot-noise, \ie the scatter of tracer density around $\langle \delta_{\mathrm{tracer}}|\delta_m\rangle$. It is well known that this noise can be significantly non-Poissonian and we validate the performance of a more general, two-parameter shot-noise model for different tracers and simulations. Both parts of our analysis are meant to pave the way for forthcoming applications to survey data., Comment: 20 pages, submitted to MNRAS, numerical tools available at https://github.com/OliverFHD/CosMomentum

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
In the context of tomographic cosmic shear surveys, there exists a nulling transformation of weak lensing observations (also called BNT transform) that allows us to simplify the correlation structure of tomographic cosmic shear observations, as well as to build observables that depend only on a localised range of redshifts and thus independent from the low-redshift/small-scale modes. This procedure renders possible accurate, and from-first-principles, predictions of the convergence and aperture mass one-point distributions (PDF). We here explore other consequences of this transformation on the (reduced) numerical complexity of the estimation of the joint PDF between nulled bins and demonstrate how to use these results to make theoretical predictions., Comment: 14 pages, published by PRD, comments welcome

Variants of the black hole information paradox are studied in Type IIB string theory setups that realize four-dimensional gravity coupled to a bath. The setups are string theory versions of doubly-holographic Karch/Randall brane worlds, with black holes coupled to non-gravitating and gravitating baths. The 10d versions are based on fully backreacted solutions for configurations of D3, D5 and NS5 branes, and admit dual descriptions as $\mathcal N=4$ SYM on a half space and 3d $T_\rho^\sigma[SU(N)]$ SCFTs. Island contributions to the entanglement entropy of black hole radiation systems are identified through Ryu/Takayanagi surfaces and lead to Page curves. Analogs of the critical angles found in the Karch/Randall models are identified in 10d, as critical parameters in the brane configurations and dual field theories., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures; v2: JHEP version, updated references

We use holography to study codimension-2 surface defects in 5d SCFTs engineered by $(p,q)$ 5-brane webs. The three-dimensional defects are realized by D3-branes ending on the brane web. We identify the holographic representation of the defects in Type IIB $AdS_6$ solutions as probe D3-branes, and study conformal and non-conformal defects which, respectively, preserve one half and one quarter of the supersymmetry. For a sample of 5d SCFTs, including the $T_N$ theories, we provide explicit solutions for conformal and non-conformal defects. Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
Pinning down the total neutrino mass and the dark energy equation of state is a key aim for upcoming galaxy surveys. Weak lensing is a unique probe of the total matter distribution whose non-Gaussian statistics can be quantified by the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) of the lensing convergence. We calculate the convergence PDF on mildly non-linear scales from first principles using large-deviation statistics, accounting for dark energy and the total neutrino mass. For the first time, we comprehensively validate the cosmology-dependence of the convergence PDF model against large suites of simulated lensing maps, demonstrating its percent-level precision and accuracy. We show that fast simulation codes can provide highly accurate covariance matrices, which can be combined with the theoretical PDF model to perform forecasts and eliminate the need for relying on expensive N-body simulations. Our theoretical model allows us to perform the first forecast for the convergence PDF that varies the full set of $\Lambda$CDM parameters. Our Fisher forecasts establish that the constraining power of the convergence PDF compares favourably to the two-point correlation function for a Euclid-like survey area at a single source redshift. When combined with a CMB prior from Planck, the PDF constrains both the neutrino mass $M_\nu$ and the dark energy equation of state $w_0$ more strongly than the two-point correlation function., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We discuss a limit of 3d $T_\rho^\sigma[SU(N)]$ quiver gauge theories in which the number of nodes is large and the ranks scale quadratically with the length of the quiver. The sphere free energies and topologically twisted indices are obtained using supersymmetric localization. Both scale quartically with the length of the quiver and quadratically with $N$, with trilogarithm functions depending on the quiver data as coefficients. The IR SCFTs have well-behaved supergravity duals in Type IIB, and the free energies match precisely with holographic results. Previously discussed theories with $N^2\ln N$ scaling arise as limiting cases. Each balanced 3d quiver theory is linked to a 5d parent, whose matrix model is related and dominated by the same saddle point, leading to close relations between BPS observables., Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures; v2: JHEP version, updated references

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Renormalization group flows are studied between 5d SCFTs engineered by $(p,q)$ 5-brane webs with large numbers of external 5-branes. A general expression for the free energy on $S^5$ in terms of single-valued trilogarithm functions is derived from their supergravity duals, which are characterized by the 5-brane charges and additional geometric parameters. The additional geometric parameters are fixed by regularity conditions, and we show that the solutions to the regularity conditions extremize a trial free energy. These results are used to survey a large sample of $\mathcal O(10^5)$ renormalization group flows between different 5d SCFTs, including Higgs branch flows and flows that preserve the $SU(2)$ $R$-symmetry. In all cases the free energy changes monotonically towards the infrared, in line with a 5d $F$-theorem., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures; v2: JHEP version, updated references

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
The cosmic large-scale structure of our Universe is comprised of baryons and cold dark matter (CDM). Yet it is customary to treat these two components as a combined single-matter fluid with vanishing pressure, which is justified only for sufficiently large scales and late times. Here we go beyond the single-fluid approximation and develop the perturbation theory for two gravitationally coupled fluids while still assuming vanishing pressure. We mostly focus on perturbative expansions in powers of $D$ (or $D_+$), the linear structure growth of matter in a $\Lambda$CDM Universe with cosmological constant $\Lambda$. We derive in particular (1) explicit recursion relations for the two fluid densities, (2) complementary all-order results in the Lagrangian-coordinates approach, as well as (3) the associated component wavefunctions in a semi-classical approach to cosmic large-scale structure. In our companion paper (Hahn et al. 2020) we apply these new theoretical results to generate novel higher-order initial conditions for cosmological hydrodynamical simulations., Comment: 15 pages + appendices, one figure, MNRAS in press

We present a novel approach to generate higher-order initial conditions (ICs) for cosmological simulations that take into account the distinct evolution of baryons and dark matter. We focus on the numerical implementation and the validation of its performance, based on both collisionless N-body simulations and full hydrodynamic Eulerian and Lagrangian simulations. We improve in various ways over previous approaches that were limited to first-order Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT). Specifically, we (1) generalize nth-order LPT to multi-fluid systems, allowing 2LPT or 3LPT ICs for two-fluid simulations, (2) employ a novel propagator perturbation theory to set up ICs for Eulerian codes that are fully consistent with 1LPT or 2LPT, (3) demonstrate that our ICs resolve previous problems of two-fluid simulations by using variations in particle masses that eliminate spurious deviations from expected perturbative results, (4) show that the improvements achieved by going to higher-order PT are comparable to those seen for single-fluid ICs, and (5) demonstrate the excellent (i.e., few per cent level) agreement between Eulerian and Lagrangian simulations, once high-quality initial conditions are used. The rigorous development of the underlying perturbation theory is presented in a companion paper. All presented algorithms are implemented in the Monofonic Music-2 package that we make publicly available., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, MNRAS in press, revised version discusses how relative velocity mode can be included to leading order, code available from https://bitbucket.org/ohahn/monofonic

Motivated by the recent success of end-to-end training of communications in the wireless domain, we strive to adapt the end-to-end-learning idea from the wireless case (i.e., linear) to coherent optical fiber links (i.e., nonlinear). Although, at first glance, it sounds like a straightforward extension, it turns out that several pitfalls exist - in terms of theory but also in terms of practical implementation. This paper analyzes the potential of an autoencoder and limitations for the optical fiber under the influence of Kerr-nonlinearity and chromatic dispersion. As there is no exact capacity limit known and, hence, no analytical perfect system solution available, we set great value to the interpretability on the learnings of the autoencoder. Therefore, we design its architecture to be as close as possible to the structure of a classic communication system, knowing that this may limit its degree of freedom and, thus, its performance. Nevertheless, we were able to achieve an unexpected high gain in terms of spectral efficiency compared to a conventional reference system., Comment: Accepted (21.02.2020) for presentation at the 21st IEEE/ITG-Symposium on Photonic Networks, Leipzig, Germany, 13-14.05.2020

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Quiver gauge theories with a large number of nodes host a wealth of Wilson loop operators. Expectation values are obtained, using supersymmetric localization, for Wilson loops in the antisymmetric representations associated with each individual gauge node, for a sample of 5d long quiver gauge theories whose UV fixed points have holographic duals in Type IIB. The sample includes the $T_N$ theories and the results are uniformly given in terms of Bloch-Wigner functions. The holographic representation of the Wilson loops is identified. It comprises, for each supergravity solution, a two-parameter family of D3-branes which exactly reproduce the field theory results and identify points in the internal space with the faces of the associated 5-brane web. The expectation values of (anti)fundamental Wilson loops exhibit an enhanced scaling for many operators, which matches between field theory and supergravity., Comment: 43 pages, 7 figures

We present a non-supersymmetric deformation of probe branes describing conformal defects of codimension two in AdS/CFT. The worldvolume of the probe branes is deformed from $AdS_{p}\times S^1$ embedded in an $AdS_{p+2} \times \mathcal M^{D-p-2}$ background to an embedding of Janus form, which uses an $AdS_{p-1}$ slicing of $AdS_p$ and in which the brane bends along the slicing coordinate. In field theory terms this realizes conformal interfaces on codimension-two defects. We discuss these "Janus on the brane" solutions for $AdS_3\times S^1$ D3-branes in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ solution of Type IIB, realizing interfaces on surface defects in $\mathcal N=4$ SYM, and show that similar solutions exist for probe branes in $AdS_{p+2}\times S^{9-p}$ vacua of M-theory and in the $AdS_6\times S^4$ solution of massive Type IIA., Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure, 2 faces; v2: published version

We investigate the possibility to detect primordial non-Gaussianity by analysing the bulk of the probability distribution function (PDF) of late-time cosmic density fluctuations. For this purpose we devise a new method to predict the impact of general non-Gaussian initial conditions on the late-time density PDF. At redshift $z=1$ and for a smoothing scale of 30Mpc/$h$ our predictions agree with the high-resolution Quijote N-body simulations to $\sim 0.2\%$ precision. This is within cosmic variance of a $\sim 100(\mathrm{Gpc}/h)^3$ survey volume. When restricting to this 30Mpc/$h$ smoothing scale and to mildly non-linear densities ($\delta[30\mathrm{Mpc}/h] \in [-0.3, 0.4]$) and also marginalizing over potential ignorance of the amplitude of the non-linear power spectrum an analysis of the PDF for such a survey volume can still measure the amplitude of different primordial bispectrum shapes to an accuracy of \smash{$\Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{loc}}=\pm 7.4\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{equi}}=\pm 22.0\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{ortho}}=\pm 46.0$} . When pushing to smaller scales and assuming a joint analysis of the PDF with smoothing radii of 30Mpc/$h$ and 15Mpc/$h$ ($\delta[15\mathrm{Mpc}/h] \in [-0.4, 0.5]$) this improves to \smash{$\Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{loc}}=\pm 3.3\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{equi}}=\pm 11.0\ ,\ \Delta f_{\mathrm{NL}}^{\mathrm{ortho}}=\pm 17.0\ $} - even when marginalizing over the non-linear variances at both scales as two free parameters. Especially, such an analysis could simultaneously measure $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ and the amplitude and slope of the non-linear power spectrum. However, at 15Mpc/$h$ our predictions are only accurate to $\lesssim 0.8\%$ for the considered density range. We discuss how this has to be improved in order to push to these small scales and make full use of upcoming surveys with a PDF-based analysis., Comment: changes to agree with journal version; 22 pages, 12 figures; public code available at https://github.com/OliverFHD/CosMomentum

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
We comprehensively analyse the cosmology dependence of counts-in-cell statistics. We focus on the shape of the one-point probability distribution function (PDF) of the matter density field at mildly nonlinear scales. Based on large-deviation statistics, we parametrise the cosmology dependence of the matter PDF in terms of the linear power spectrum, the growth factor, the spherical collapse dynamics, and the nonlinear variance. We extend our formalism to include massive neutrinos, finding that the total matter PDF is highly sensitive to the total neutrino mass $M_\nu$ and can disentangle it from the clustering amplitude $\sigma_8$. Using more than a million PDFs extracted from the Quijote simulations, we determine the response of the matter PDF to changing parameters in the $\nu\Lambda$CDM model and successfully cross-validate the theoretical model and the simulation measurements. We present the first $\nu\Lambda$CDM Fisher forecast for the matter PDF at multiple scales and redshifts, and its combination with the matter power spectrum. We establish that the matter PDF and the matter power spectrum are highly complementary at mildly nonlinear scales. The matter PDF is particularly powerful for constraining the matter density $\Omega_m$, clustering amplitude $\sigma_8$ and the total neutrino mass $M_\nu$. Adding the mildly nonlinear matter PDF to the mildly nonlinear matter power spectrum improves constraints on $\Omega_m$ by a factor of 5 and $\sigma_8$ by a factor of 2 when considering the three lowest redshifts. In our joint analysis of the matter PDF and matter power spectrum at three redshifts, the total neutrino mass is constrained to better than 0.01 eV with a total volume of 6 (Gpc/h)$^3$. We discuss how density-split statistics can be used to translate those encouraging results for the matter PDF into realistic observables in galaxy surveys., Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures

The Quijote simulations are a set of 44,100 full N-body simulations spanning more than 7,000 cosmological models in the $\{\Omega_{\rm m}, \Omega_{\rm b}, h, n_s, \sigma_8, M_\nu, w \}$ hyperplane. At a single redshift the simulations contain more than 8.5 trillions of particles over a combined volume of 44,100 $(h^{-1}{\rm Gpc})^3$; each simulation follow the evolution of $256^3$, $512^3$ or $1024^3$ particles in a box of $1~h^{-1}{\rm Gpc}$ length. Billions of dark matter halos and cosmic voids have been identified in the simulations, whose runs required more than 35 million core hours. Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
The distribution of the cosmic convergence field is modeled using a large-deviation principle where all non-Gaussian contributions are computed from first principles. The geometry of the past light cone is accounted for by constructing the total weak-lensing signal from contributions of the matter density in thin disk slices. The prediction of this model is successfully tested against numerical simulation with ray tracing, and found to be accurate within at least 5 per cent in the tails at redshift 1 and opening angle of 10 arcmin and even more so with increasing source redshift and opening angle. An accurate analytical approximation to the theory is also provided for practical implementation. The lensing kernel that mixes physical scales along the line-of-sight tends to reduce the domain of validity of this theoretical approach compared to the three dimensional case of cosmic densities in spherical cells. This effect is shown to be avoidable if a nulling procedure is implemented in order to localise the lensing line-of-sight integrations in a tomographic analysis. Accuracy in the tails is thus achieved within a percent for source redshifts between 0.5 and 1.5 and an opening angle of 10 arcmin. Applications to future weak-lensing surveys like Euclid and the specific issue of shape noise are discussed., Comment: 23 pages, accepted to MNRAS, comments welcome

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Exact results are derived for 5d SCFTs with holographic duals in Type IIB supergravity. These theories have relevant deformations that flow to linear quiver gauge theories, with the number of nodes large in the large-$N$ limits described by supergravity. Starting from a suitable formulation of the matrix models resulting from supersymmetric localization of the squashed $S^5$ partition functions, the saddle point equations are solved for generic quivers with $N_f=2N$ at all interior nodes, which includes the $T_N$ theories, and for a sample of theories with $N_f\neq 2N$ nodes including theories with Chern-Simons terms. The resulting exact expressions for the free energies and conformal central charges are consistent with supergravity predictions and, where available, with previous numerical field theory analyses., Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics ,Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more recently, at $z < 1$, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large cosmological volume at $2 < z < 5$, together with the ability to efficiently target high-$z$ galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of $\sigma(f_{NL}^{\rm local})$ of order unity that separates single field and multi-field models. Simultaneously, it can measure the fraction of Dark Energy at the percent level up to $z = 5$, thus serving as an unprecedented test of the standard model and opening up a tremendous discovery space., Comment: Science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
A broad class of holographic duals for 4d $\mathcal N=2$ SCFTs is based on the general half-BPS $AdS_5$ solutions to M-theory constructed by Lin, Lunin and Maldacena, and their Kaluza-Klein reductions to Type IIA. We derive the equations governing spin 2 fluctuations around these solutions. The resulting partial differential equations admit families of universal solutions which are constructed entirely out of the generic data characterizing the background. This implies the existence of families of spin 2 operators in the dual SCFTs, in short superconformal multiplets which we identify., Comment: 16 pages
