Search

Traditional thermoelectric materials rely on low thermal conductivity to enhance their efficiency but suffer from inherently limited power factors. Novel pathways to optimize electronic transport are thus crucial. Here, we achieve ultrahigh power factors in Ni$_3$Ge through a new materials design principle. When overlapping flat and dispersive bands are engineered to the Fermi level, charge carriers can undergo intense interband scattering, yielding an energy filtering effect similar to what has long been predicted in certain nanostructured materials. Via a multi-step DFT-based screening method developed herein, we discover a new family of L1$_2$-ordered binary compounds with ultrahigh power factors up to 11 mW m$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ near room temperature, which are driven by an intrinsic phonon-mediated energy filtering mechanism. Our comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of these new intriguing materials paves the way for understanding and designing high-performance scattering-tuned metallic thermoelectrics.

Heusler compounds with six valence electrons per atom have attracted interest as thermoelectric materials owing to their semimetallic and semiconducting properties. Here, we theoretically and experimentally investigate electronic transport in Ru$_2$TiSi-based full-Heuslers. We show that electronic transport in this system can be well captured by a two-parabolic band model. The larger band gap of Ru$_2$TiSi promises a higher thermoelectric performance, compared to its isovalent family member Fe$_2$VAl, which has been studied as a thermoelectric material for over two decades. Additionally, we identify $p$-type Ru$_2$TiSi as far more efficient than previously studied $n$-type compounds and demonstrate that this can be traced back to much lighter and more mobile holes originating from dispersive valence bands. Our findings demonstrate that an exceptionally high dimensionless figure of merit $zT > 1$ can be realized in these $p$-type compounds around 700 K upon proper reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity, e.g., by substituting Zr or Hf for Ti.

Tailoring charge transport in solids on demand is the overarching goal of condensed-matter research as it is crucial for electronic applications. Yet, often the proper tuning knob is missing and extrinsic factors such as impurities and disorder impede coherent conduction. Here we control the very buildup of an electronic band from impurity states within the pseudogap of ternary Fe$_{2-x}$V$_{1+x}$Al Heusler compounds via reducing the Fe content. Our density functional theory calculations combined with specific heat and electrical resistivity experiments reveal that, initially, these states are Andersonlocalized at low V concentrations $0 < x < 0.1$. As x increases, we monitor the formation of mobility edges upon the archetypal Mott-Anderson transition and map the increasing bandwidth of conducting states by thermoelectric measurements. Ultimately, delocalization of charge carriers in fully disordered V$_3$Al results in a resistivity exactly at the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit that is perfectly temperature-independent up to 700 K - more constant than constantan., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Studying the magnetic ground states of frustrated antiferromagnets provides unique insight into the stability of quantum spin liquids, even if the anticipated state is not realized towards T = 0. Particularly relevant are structural modifications setting in at temperatures where the magnetic correlations come into play. Here we explore the lattice dynamics of Y-kapellasite (Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8) single crystals by infrared spectroscopy in combination with ab initio calculations. We observe significant changes in the phonon spectra at Ts = 32 K, that gradually evolve down to low temperatures. The increase in the number of phonon modes provides evidence for a lowering of symmetry and we discuss several possibilities of crystal structure modifications. Our analysis also reveals that the structural variation involves exclusively H and O atoms, while the other atoms remain rather unaffected. An 8% red shift of the lowest-lying phonon mode upon cooling indicates strong magneto-elastic effects upon decoupling Cu-6f hexagons through the lattice vibrations.

The nature of the magnetic ground state of highly frustrated systems remained puzzling to this day. Here, we have performed multifrequency electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements on a putative quantum spin liquid compound $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$, which is a rare example of $S = 1/2$ spins on a triangular lattice. At high temperatures, the spin susceptibility exhibits a weak temperature dependence which can be described by the Heisenberg model with an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction of strength $J/k_B \approx 175$ K. At low temperatures, however, the rapid drop of the static spin susceptibility, together with monotonic decrease of the ESR linewidth indicates that strong singlet correlations develop below a pairing energy scale $T^*$ accompanied by a spin gap. On the other hand, a weak Curie-like spin susceptibility and the angular dependence of the linewidth suggest additional contribution from impurity spins. We propose the gradual formation of spin singlets with an inhomogeneous spin gap at low temperatures.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials are useful for applications such as waste heat harvesting or efficient and targeted cooling. While various strategies towards superior thermoelectrics through a reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity have been developed, a path to enhance the power factor is pressing. Here, we report large power factors up to 5 mW m$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ at room temperature in the kagome metal Ni$_3$In$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$. This system is predicted to feature almost dispersionless flat bands in conjunction with highly dispersive Dirac-like bands in its electronic structure around the Fermi energy $E_\text{F}$ [L. Ye et al., Nature Physics 1-5 (2024)]. Within this study, we experimentally and theoretically showcase that tuning this flat band precisely below $E_\text{F}$ by chemical doping $x$ boosts the Seebeck coefficient and power factor, as highly mobile charge carriers scatter into the flat-band states. Our work demonstrates the prospect of engineering extremely flat and highly dispersive bands towards the Fermi energy in kagome metals and introduces topological flat bands as a novel tuning knob for thermoelectrics.

We have investigated the magnetic ground state properties of the quantum spin trimer compound strontium hydroxy copper chloride SrCu(OH)$_3$Cl using bulk magnetization, specific heat measurements, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. SrCu(OH)$_3$Cl consists of layers with isolated Cu$^{2+}$ triangles and hence provides an opportunity to understand the magnetic ground state of an isolated system of \textit{S} = 1/2 arranged on an equilateral triangle. Although magnetization measurements do not exhibit a phase transition to a long-range ordered state down to \textit{T} = 2 K, they reveal the characteristic behavior of isolated trimers with an exchange of $J = 154$~K. The Curie-Weiss behavior changes around 50--80~K, as is also seen in the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate. In zero magnetic field, our specific heat data establish a second-order phase transition to an antiferromagnetic ground state below \textit{T}= 1.2 K. We have drawn a magnetic field-temperature ($H$-$T$) phase diagram based on the specific heat measurements. The ESR data show divergence of the linewidth at lower temperatures, which precedes the phase transition to an antiferromagnetic long-range ordered state with unconventional critical exponents. The temperature variation of the $g$-factor further confirms the antiferromagnetic phase transition and reflects the underlying magneto-crystalline anisotropy of the compound.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials seamlessly convert thermal into electrical energy and vice versa, making them promising for applications such as power generation or cooling. Although historically the TE effect was first discovered in metals, state-of-the-art research mainly focuses on doped semiconductors with large figure of merit, $zT$, that determines the conversion efficiency of TE devices. While metallic alloys have superior functional properties, such as high ductility and mechanical strength, they have mostly been discarded from investigation in the past due to their small Seebeck effect. Here, we realize unprecedented TE performance in metals by tuning the energy-dependent electronic scattering. Based on our theoretical predictions, we identify binary NiAu alloys as promising candidate materials and experimentally discover colossal power factors up to 34 mWm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ (on average 30 mWm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ from 300 to 1100 K), which is more than twice larger than in any known bulk material above room temperature. This system reaches a $zT$ up to 0.5, setting a new world record value for metals. NiAu alloys are not only orders of magnitude more conductive than heavily doped semiconductors, but also have large Seebeck coefficients originating from an inherently different physical mechanism: within the Au s band conduction electrons are highly mobile while holes are scattered into more localized Ni d states, yielding a strongly energy-dependent carrier mobility. Our work challenges the common belief that good metals are bad thermoelectrics and presents an auspicious paradigm for achieving high TE performance in metallic alloys through engineering electron-hole selective s-d scattering.

The organic system, $\kappa$-[(BEDT-TTF)$_{1-x}$(BEDT-STF)$_x$]$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, showing the Mott transition between a nonmagnetic Mott insulating (NMI) state and a Fermi liquid (FL), is systematically studied by calorimetric measurements. An increase of the electronic heat capacity at the transition from the NMI state to the FL state which keeps the triangular dimer lattice demonstrates that the charge sector lost in the Mott insulating state is recovered in the FL state. We observed that the remaining low-energy spin excitations in the Mott insulating state show unique temperature dependence, and that the NMI state has a larger lattice entropy originating from the frustrated lattice, which leads to the Pomeranchuk-like effect on the electron localization. Near the Mott boundary, an unexpected enhancement and magnetic-field dependence of heat capacity are observed. This anomalous heat capacity is different from the behavior in the typical first-order Mott transition and shows similarities with quantum critical behavior. Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8 realizes an original anisotropic kagome model hosting a rich magnetic phase diagram [M. Hering et al, npj Computational Materials 8, 1 (2022)]. We present an improved synthesis of large phase-pure single crystals via an external gradient method. These crystals were investigated in details by susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion, neutron scattering and local muSR and NMR techniques. At variance with polycristalline samples, the study of single crystals gives evidence for subtle structural instabilities at 33K and 13K which preserve the global symmetry of the system and thus the magnetic model. At 2.1K the compound shows a magnetic transition to a coplanar (1/3,1/3) long range order as predicted theoretically. However our analysis of the spin wave excitations yields magnetic interactions which locate the compound closer to the phase boundary to a classical jammed spin liquid phase. Enhanced quantum fluctuations at this boundary may be responsible for the strongly reduced ordered moment of the Cu2+, estimated to be 0.075muB from muSR.

In-plane uniaxial pressure has been shown to strongly tune the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4 by approaching a Lifshitz transition and associated Van Hove singularity (VHS) in the density of states. At the VHS, $T_c$ and the in- and out-of-plane upper critical fields are all strongly enhanced, and the latter has changed its curvature as a function of temperature from convex to concave. However, due to strain inhomogeneity it has not been possible so far to determine how the upper critical fields change with strain. Here, we show the strain dependence of both upper critical fields, which was achieved due to an improved sample preparation. We find that the in-plane upper critical field is mostly linear in $T_c$. On the other hand, the out-of-plane upper critical field varies with a higher power in $T_c$, and peaks strongly at the VHS. The strong increase in magnitude and the change in form of $H_\mathrm{c2||c}$ occur very close to the Van Hove strain, and points to a strong enhancement of both the density of states and the gap magnitude at the Lifshitz transition.

It is predicted that strongly interacting spins on a frustrated lattice may lead to a quantum disordered ground state or even form a quantum spin liquid with exotic low-energy excitations. However, a thorough tuning of the frustration strength, separating its effects from those of disorder and other factors, is pending. Here we break the symmetry of a kagome-lattice compound in a controlled manner by applying $in$ $situ$ uniaxial stress. The transition temperature of $\rm Y_3Cu_9(OH)_{18}OCl_8$ is linearly enhanced with strain, $\Delta T_{\rm N}/T_{\rm N} \approx 10\%$ upon in-plane compression of order $1\%$, providing clear evidence for a release of frustration and its pivotal role for magnetic order. Our comprehensive $^1$H NMR results suggest a $\overrightarrow{Q}=(1/3\times 1/3)$ state under unstrained conditions and further reveal an incomplete antiferromagnetic transition with fluctuating moments in this strongly frustrated system., Comment: 7 pages total, 4 pages main text, 5 figures

The quest for entangled spin excitations has stimulated intense research on frustrated magnetic systems. For almost two decades, the triangular-lattice Mott insulator $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ has been the hottest candidate for a $gapless$ quantum spin liquid with itinerant spinons. Very recently, however, this scenario was overturned as electron-spin-resonance (ESR) studies unveiled a spin gap, calling for reevaluation of the magnetic ground state. Here we achieve a precise mapping of this spin-gapped phase through the Mott transition by ultrahigh-resolution strain tuning. Our transport experiments reveal a reentrance of charge localization below $T^{\star}=6$ K associated with a gap size of 30-50 K. The negative slope of the insulator-metal boundary, $dT^{\star}/dp<0$, evidences the low-entropy nature of the spin-singlet ground state. By tuning the enigmatic '6 K anomaly' through the phase diagram of $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, we identify it as the transition to a valence-bond-solid phase, with typical magnetic and structural fingerprints, that persists at $T\rightarrow 0$ until unconventional superconductivity and metallic transport proliferate., Comment: 7 pages total, 4 pages main text, 4 figures

Due to the small photon momentum, optical spectroscopy commonly probes magnetic excitations only at the center of the Brillouin zone; however, there are ways to override this restriction. In the case of the distorted kagome quantum magnet Y-kapellasite, Y$_3$Cu$_9$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_8$, under scrutiny here, the magnon density of states can be accessed over the entire Brillouin zone through three-center magnon excitations. This mechanism is aided by the three different magnetic sublattices and strong short-range correlations in the distorted kagome lattice. The results of THz time-domain experiments agree remarkably well with linear spin-wave theory. Time-domain magneto-THz spectroscopy is utilized to study the frustrated magnet averievite Cu$_{5-x}$Zn$_x$V$_2$O$_{10}$(CsCl). Pronounced THz resonances are observed in unsubstituted samples ($x=0$) when cooling below the onset of short-range magnetic correlations. The influence of external magnetic effects confirms the magnetic origin of these resonances. Increasing Zn substitution suppresses the resonances, as frustration effects dominate, reflecting the non-magnetic phases for $x> 0.25$ compounds. The temperature evolution of the THz spectra is complemented with electron spin resonance spectroscopy. This comparison allows a direct probe of the different contributions from magnetic order, frustration, and structural properties in the phase diagram of averievite. We perform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the oxygen-17 Knight shifts for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, while subjected to uniaxial stress applied along [100] direction. The resulting strain is associated with a strong variation of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the inferred magnetic response. A quasi-particle description based on density-functional theory calculations, supplemented by many-body renormalizations, is found to reproduce our experimental results, and highlights the key role of a van-Hove singularity. The Fermi liquid coherence scale is shown to be tunable by strain, and driven to low values as the associated Lifshitz transition is approached.

Landau suggested that the low-temperature properties of metals can be understood in terms of long-lived quasiparticles with all complex interactions included in Fermi-liquid parameters, such as the effective mass $m^{\star}$. Despite its wide applicability, electronic transport in bad or strange metals and unconventional superconductors is controversially discussed towards a possible collapse of the quasiparticle concept. Here we explore the electrodynamic response of correlated metals at half filling for varying correlation strength upon approaching a Mott insulator. We reveal persistent Fermi-liquid behavior with pronounced quadratic dependences of the optical scattering rate on temperature and frequency, along with a puzzling elastic contribution to relaxation. The strong increase of the resistivity beyond the Ioffe-Regel-Mott limit is accompanied by a `displaced Drude peak' in the optical conductivity. Our results, supported by a theoretical model for the optical response, demonstrate the emergence of a bad metal from resilient quasiparticles that are subject to dynamical localization and dissolve near the Mott transition., Comment: Main part: 8 pages, 4 figures; Supplement: 8 pages, 11 figures

Geometrical frustration, quantum entanglement and disorder may prevent long-range order of localized spins with strong exchange interactions, resulting in a novel state of matter. $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$-Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ is considered the best approximation of this elusive quantum-spin-liquid state, but its ground-state properties remain puzzling. Here we present a multi-frequency electron-spin resonance study down to millikelvin temperatures, revealing a rapid drop of the spin susceptibility at $T^*=6\,\mathrm{K}$. This opening of a spin gap, accompanied by structural modifications, suggests the enigmatic `$6\,\mathrm{K}$-anomaly' as the transition to a valence-bond-solid ground state. We identify an impurity contribution that becomes dominant when the intrinsic spins form singlets. Unambiguous identification of the superconducting order parameter symmetry of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has remained elusive for more than a quarter century. While a chiral $p$-wave ground state analogue to superfluid $^3$He-$A$ was ruled out only very recently, other proposed $p$-wave scenarios are still viable. Here, field-dependent $^{17}$O Knight shift measurements are compared to corresponding specific heat measurements, previously reported. We conclude that the shift results can be accounted for by the expected field-induced quasiparticle response only. We investigate the lattice dynamics in the spin-1/2 frustrated kagome compound herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ by a combination of infrared spectroscopy measurements and ab initio density functional theory calculations, and provide an unambiguous assignment of infrared-active lattice vibrations involving in-plane and out-of-plane atom displacements in the kagome layers. Upon cooling, non-thermal red-shifts and broadening appear specifically for modes that deform the kagome layer or affect the Cu-O-Cu bond angles, thus creating pronounced modifications of the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling. Our results indicate the presence of a strong magnetoelastic coupling to the spin system. We discuss the effects of this coupling and its relation to recent experiments reporting a global symmetry reduction of the kagome lattice symmetry.

The dimer Mott insulator $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ can be tuned into a metallic and superconducting state upon applying pressure of 1.5 kbar and more. We have performed dielectric spectroscopy measurements (7 kHz to 5 MHz) on $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ single crystals as a function of temperature (down to $T=8$ K) and pressure (up to $p=4$ kbar). At ambient conditions, a relaxor-like dielectric behavior develops below 50 K that shifts toward lower temperatures as the crystal is pressurized. Interestingly, a second peak emerges in $\varepsilon_{1}(T)$ around $T=15$ K, which becomes strongly enhanced with pressure and is attributed to a small volume fraction of metallic puddles in the insulating host phase. When approaching the phase boundary, this peak diverges rapidly reaching $\varepsilon_{1} \approx 10^{5}$. Our dynamical mean-field theory calculations substantiate that the dielectric catastrophe at the Mott transition is not caused by closing the energy gap, but due to the spatial coexistence of correlated metallic and insulating regions. We discuss the percolative nature of the first-order Mott insulator-to-metal transition in all details.

The electronic properties of molecular conductors can be readily varied via physical or chemical pressure as it increases the bandwidth W; this enables crossing the Mott insulator-to-metal phase transition by reducing electronic correlations U/W. Here we introduce an alternative path by increasing the molecular orbitals when partially replacing sulfur by selenium in the constituting bis-(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) molecules of the title compound. We characterize the tuning of the insulating quantum spin liquid state via a Mott transition to the metallic Fermi-liquid state by transport, dielectric, and optical measurements. At this first-order phase transition, metallic regions coexist in the insulating matrix leading to pronounced percolative effects most obvious in a strong enhancement of the dielectric constant at low temperatures.

We scrutinize the magnetic properties of $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Cl through its first-order metal-insulator transition at $T_{\rm CO}=30$ K by means of $^1$H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). While in the metal we find Fermi-liquid behavior with temperature-independent $(T_1T)^{-1}$, the relaxation rate exhibits a pronounced enhancement when charge order sets in. The NMR spectra remain unchanged through the transition and no magnetic order stabilizes down to 25 mK. Similar to the isostructural spin-liquid candidates $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ and $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$, $T_1^{-1}$ acquires a dominant maximum (here around 5 K). The correlation-driven Mott transition is commonly characterized by a drop in resistivity across the insulator-metal phase boundary; yet, the complex permittivity provides a deeper insight into the microscopic nature. We investigate the frequency- and temperature-dependent dielectric response of the Mott insulator $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$-Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ when tuning from a quantum spin liquid into the Fermi-liquid state by applying external pressure and chemical substitution of the donor molecules. At low temperatures the coexistence region at the first-order transition leads to a strong enhancement of the quasi-static dielectric constant $\epsilon_1$ when the effective correlations are tuned through the critical value. Several dynamical regimes are identified around the Mott point and vividly mapped through pronounced permittivity crossovers. The superconducting state in the quasi-two-dimensional and strongly correlated Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is uniquely held up as a solid state analog to superfluid $^3$He-$A$, with an odd-parity order parameter that also breaks time reversal symmetry, and for which the vector order parameter has the same direction in spin space for all electron momenta. The recent discovery that uniaxial pressure causes a steep rise and maximum in transition temperature ($T_c$) in strained samples motivated the study of $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) that we describe in this article. A reduction of Knight shifts $K$ was observed for all strain values and temperatures $T

Systematic pressure- and temperature-dependent infrared studies on the two-dimensional organic quantum spin-liquid $\beta^{\prime}$-EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ disclose the electronic and lattice evolution across the Mott insulator-metal transition. Increasing hydrostatic pressure continuously suppresses the insulating ground state; for $p>0.6$~GPa, a Drude-like component develops indicating the appearance of coherent quasiparticles at the Fermi level. In the vicinity of the Mott transition, not only the electronic state changes rapidly, but also the vibration modes exhibit a jump both in frequency and Fano constant, underlining the strong coupling between lattice and electrons. The anisotropy of the in-plane optical response becomes inverted above 0.6~GPa. The findings are discussed in detail and summarized in a phase diagram comprising different experimental approaches.

We present a successful synthesis method of the series Ga$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OD)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ with substitutions up to $x=0.8$. The compound remains a frustrated kagome system with an insulating ground state similar to herbertsmithite for these substitutions, as the additional charge of Ga$^{3+}$ is most likely bound to additional OH$^{-}$ and Cl$^{-}$. Besides infrared measurements, we present magnetic and specific-heat data down to 2 K for selected samples with $0\leq x\leq0.8$. With increasing $x$ the long-range magnetic order is suppressed, similar to what was observed in the series Zn$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$, indicating that Ga goes predominantly to the inter-plane position of the layered crystal structure. The reduction of the frozen magnetic fraction with increasing substitution was followed by $\mu$SR measurements. $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was applied as a local probe for Ga induced disorder. One well resolved Ga NMR line of moderate width is found for each isotope across the phase diagram which indicates a rather homogeneous distribution of the Ga isotopes on a single site in the lattice., Comment: submitted to physica status solidi

The effects of uniaxial compressive stress on the normal state $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance properties of the unconventional superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ are reported. The paramagnetic shifts of both planar and apical oxygen sites show pronounced anomalies near the nominal $\mathbf{a}$-axis strain $\varepsilon_{aa}\equiv\varepsilon_v$, that maximizes the superconducting transition temperature, $T_{c}$. The spin susceptibility weakly increases on lowering the temperature below $T$$\simeq$10 K, consistent with an enhanced density of states associated with passing the Fermi energy through a van Hove singularity. Although such a Lifshitz transition occurs in the $\gamma$ band, formed by the Ru $d_{xy}$ states hybridized with in-plane O $p_{\pi}$ orbitals, the large Hund's coupling renormalizes the uniform spin susceptibilty, which, in turn, affects the hyperfine fields of all nuclei. Quantum spin liquids attract great interest due to their exceptional magnetic properties characterized by the absence of long-range order down to low temperatures despite the strong magnetic interaction. Commonly, these compounds are strongly correlated electron systems, and their electrodynamic response is governed by the Mott gap in the excitation spectrum. Here we summarize and discuss the optical properties of several two-dimensional quantum spin liquid candidates. First we consider the inorganic material Herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ and related compounds, which crystallize in a kagome lattice. Then we turn to the organic compounds $\beta^{\prime}$-EtMe$_3$\-Sb\-[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$, $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$ and $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, where the spins are arranged in an almost perfect triangular lattice, leading to strong frustration. Due to differences in bandwidth, the effective correlation strength varies over a wide range, leading to a rather distinct behavior as far as the electrodynamic properties are concerned. The electrodynamic response of organic spin liquids with highly-frustrated triangular lattices has been measured in a wide energy range. While the overall optical spectra of these Mott insulators are governed by transitions between the Hubbard bands, distinct in-gap excitations can be identified at low temperatures and frequencies which we attribute to the quantum spin liquid state. For the strongly correlated $\beta^{\prime}$-EtMe$_3$\-Sb\-[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$, we discover enhanced conductivity below $175~{\rm cm}^{-1}$, comparable to the energy of the magnetic coupling $J\approx 250$ K. For $\omega\rightarrow 0$ these low-frequency excitations vanish faster than the charge-carrier response subject to Mott-Hubbard correlations, resulting in a dome-shape band peaked at 100~\cm. Possible relations to spinons, magnons and disorder are discussed.

The honeycomb Mott insulator $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ loses its low-temperature magnetic order by pressure. We report clear evidence for a dimerized structure at $P>1$ GPa and observe the breakdown of the relativistic $j_{\rm eff}$ picture in this regime strongly affecting the electronic properties. A pressure-induced Kitaev quantum spin liquid cannot occur in this broken symmetry state. Optical conductivity measurements are combined with density functional theory calculations in order to understand the electrodynamic response of the frustrated Mott insulators Herbertsmithite $\mathrm{ZnCu_{3}(OH)_{6}Cl_{2}}$ and the closely-related kagome-lattice compound $\mathrm{Y_{3}Cu_{9}(OH)_{19}Cl_{8}}$. We identify these materials as charge-transfer rather than Mott-Hubbard insulators, similar to the high-$T_c$ cuprate parent compounds. The band edge is at 3.3 and 3.6 eV, respectively, establishing the insulating nature of these compounds. Inside the gap, we observe dipole-forbidden local electronic transitions between the Cu $3d$ orbitals in the range 1--2 eV. With the help of \textit{ab initio} calculations we demonstrate that the electrodynamic response in these systems is directly related to the role of on-site Coulomb repulsion: while charge-transfer processes have their origin on transitions between the ligand band and the Cu $3d$ upper Hubbard band, \textit{local} $d$-$d$ excitations remain rather unaffected by correlations., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Supplemental Material

The Widom line identifies the locus in the phase diagram where a supercritical gas crosses over from gas-like to a more liquid-like behavior. A similar transition exists in correlated electron liquids, where the interplay of Coulomb repulsion, bandwidth and temperature triggers between the Mott insulating state and an incoherent conduction regime. Here we explore the electrodynamic response of three organic quantum spin liquids with different degrees of effective correlation, where the absence of magnetic order enables unique insight into the nature of the genuine Mott state down to the most relevant low-temperature region. Combining optical spectroscopy with pressure-dependent dc transport and theoretical calculations, we succeeded to construct a phase diagram valid for all Mott insulators on a quantitative scale. In the vicinity of the low-temperature phase boundary, we discover metallic fluctuations within the Mott gap, exhibiting enhanced absorption upon cooling that is not present in antiferromagnetic Mott insulators. Since the first observation of weak ferromagnetism in the charge-transfer salt kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2-Cu[N(CN)2]Cl [U. Welp et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 69, 840 (1992)], no further evidence of ferromagnetism in this class of organic materials has been reported. Here we present static and dynamic spin susceptibility measurements on kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Hg(SCN)2Br revealing weak ferromagnetism below about TWF = 20 K. We suggest that frustrated spins in the molecular dimers suppress long-range order, forming a spin-glass ground state in the insulating phase.

The Mott insulator $\beta'$-EtMe$_3$Sb[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$ belongs to a class of charge transfer solids with highly-frustrated triangular lattice of $S=1/2$ molecular dimers and a quantum-spin-liquid ground state. Our experimental and ab initio theoretical studies show the fingerprints of strong correlations and disorder, important role of cation-dimer bonding in charge redistribution, no sign of intra- and inter-dimer dipoles, and the decisive van der Waals contribution to inter-dimer interactions and the ground state structure. The latter consists of quasi-degenerate electronic states related to the different configurations of cation moieties which permit two different equally probable orientations. We present the crystal structure and magnetic properties of Y$_{3}$Cu$_{9}$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_{8}$, a stoichiometric frustrated quantum spin system with slightly distorted kagome layers. Single crystals of Y$_{3}$Cu$_{9}$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_{8}$ were grown under hydrothermal conditions. The structure was determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction and confirmed by neutron powder diffraction. The observed structure reveals two different Cu-positions leading to a slightly distored kagome layer in contrast to the closely related YCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{3}$. Curie-Weiss behavior at high-temperatures with a Weiss-temperature $\theta_{W}$ of the order of $-100$ K, shows a large dominant antiferromagnetic coupling within the kagome planes. Specific-heat and magnetization measurements on single crystals reveal an antiferromagnetic transition at T$_{N}=2.2$ K indicating a pronounced frustration parameter of $\theta_{W}/T_{N}\approx50$. Optical transmission experiments on powder samples and single crystals confirm the structural findings. Specific-heat measurements on YCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{3}$ down to 0.4 K confirm the proposed quantum spin-liquid state of that system. Therefore, the two Y-Cu-OH-Cl compounds present a unique setting to investigate closely related structures with a spin-liquid state and a strongly frustrated AFM ordered state, by slightly releasing the frustration in a kagome lattice.

The Mott insulator $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$ forms a highly-frustrated triangular lattice of $S=1/2$ dimers with a possible quantum-spin-liquid state. Our experimental and numerical studies reveal the emergence of a slight charge imbalance between crystallographically inequivalent sites, relaxor dielectric response and hopping dc transport. In a broader perspective we conclude that the universal properties of strongly-correlated charge-transfer salts with spin liquid state are an anion-supported valence band and cyanide-induced quasi-degenerate electronic configurations in the relaxed state. The generic low-energy excitations are caused by charged domain walls rather than by fluctuating electric dipoles. The dimer Mott insulator $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ exhibits unusual electrodynamic properties. Numerical investigations of the electronic ground state and the molecular and lattice vibrations reveal the importance of the Cu$_2$(CN)$_3^-$ anion network coupled to the BEDT-TTF molecules: The threefold cyanide coordination of copper and linkage isomerism in the anion structure cause a loss of symmetry, frustration, disorder, and domain formation. The electrodynamic response of the organic spin-liquid candidate $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ has been measured in an extremely wide energy range ($10^{-13}$ to 2 eV) as a function of temperature (5 to 300 K). Below the Mott gap, excitations from the un-gapped spinon continuum cause a considerable contribution to the infrared conductivity, as suggested by the U(1) gauge theory. At THz frequencies we can identify a power-law behavior $\sigma(\omega) \propto \omega^{\beta}$ with two distinct exponents $\beta$ that change from 0.9 to 1.3 at low temperatures. The corresponding crossover scales with temperature: $\hbar\omega_c \approx k_B T$. The observed exponents differ by more than a factor of 2 from the theoretically predicted ones.
