Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) pipelines are commonly used in tasks such as question-answering (QA), relying on retrieving relevant documents from a vector store computed using a pretrained embedding model. However, if the retrieved context is inaccurate, the answers generated using the large language model (LLM) may contain errors or hallucinations. Although pretrained embedding models have advanced, adapting them to new domains remains challenging. Fine-tuning is a potential solution, but industry settings often lack the necessary fine-tuning data. To address these challenges, we propose REFINE, a novel technique that generates synthetic data from available documents and then uses a model fusion approach to fine-tune embeddings for improved retrieval performance in new domains, while preserving out-of-domain capability. We conducted experiments on the two public datasets: SQUAD and RAG-12000 and a proprietary TOURISM dataset. Results demonstrate that even the standard fine-tuning with the proposed data augmentation technique outperforms the vanilla pretrained model. Furthermore, when combined with model fusion, the proposed approach achieves superior performance, with a 5.76% improvement in recall on the TOURISM dataset, and 6.58 % and 0.32% enhancement on SQUAD and RAG-12000 respectively., Comment: Accepted in AJCAI'24

The problem of multi-task regression over graph nodes has been recently approached through Graph-Instructed Neural Network (GINN), which is a promising architecture belonging to the subset of message-passing graph neural networks. In this work, we discuss the limitations of the Graph-Instructed (GI) layer, and we formalize a novel edge-wise GI (EWGI) layer. We discuss the advantages of the EWGI layer and we provide numerical evidence that EWGINNs perform better than GINNs over graph-structured input data with chaotic connectivity, like the ones inferred from the Erdos-R\'enyi graph.

The efficacy of interpolating via Variably Scaled Kernels (VSKs) is known to be dependent on the definition of a proper scaling function, but no numerical recipes to construct it are available. Previous works suggest that such a function should mimic the target one, but no theoretical evidence is provided. This paper fills both the gaps: it proves that a scaling function reflecting the target one may lead to enhanced approximation accuracy, and it provides a user-independent tool for learning the scaling function by means of Discontinuous Neural Networks ({\delta}NN), i.e., NNs able to deal with possible discontinuities. Numerical evidence supports our claims, as it shows that the key features of the target function can be clearly recovered in the learned scaling function.

In this paper, we present a novel approach for detecting the discontinuity interfaces of a discontinuous function. This approach leverages Graph-Informed Neural Networks (GINNs) and sparse grids to address discontinuity detection also in domains of dimension larger than 3. GINNs, trained to identify troubled points on sparse grids, exploit graph structures built on the grids to achieve efficient and accurate discontinuity detection performances. We also introduce a recursive algorithm for general sparse grid-based detectors, characterized by convergence properties and easy applicability. Numerical experiments on functions with dimensions n = 2 and n = 4 demonstrate the efficiency and robust generalization of GINNs in detecting discontinuity interfaces. Notably, the trained GINNs offer portability and versatility, allowing integration into various algorithms and sharing among users.

We propose a 3D meshless method to compute mean pressure fields in turbulent flows from image velocimetry. The method is an extension of the constrained Radial Basis Function (RBF) formulation by \citet{Sperotto2022} to a Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) framework. This is designed to handle both scattered data as in Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) and data in uniform grids as in correlation-based Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The RANS extension includes the Reynolds stresses into the constrained least square problem. We test the approach on a numerical database featuring a Backward Facing Step (BFS) with a Reynolds number of 6400 (defined with respect to the inlet velocity and step height), obtained via Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS).

IXPE (Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer) is a NASA Small Explorer mission -- in partnership with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) -- dedicated to X-ray polarimetry in the 2--8 keV energy band. The IXPE telescope comprises three grazing incidence mirror modules coupled to three detector units hosting each one a Gas Pixel Detector (GPD), a gas detector that allows measuring the polarization degree by using the photoelectric effect. A wide and accurate ground calibration was carried out on the IXPE Detector Units (DUs) at INAF-IAPS, in Italy, where a dedicated facility was set-up at this aim. In this paper, we present the results obtained from this calibration campaign to study the IXPE focal plane detector response to polarized radiation. We propose a meshless method to compute pressure fields from image velocimetry data, regardless of whether this is available on a regular grid as in cross-correlation based velocimetry or on scattered points as in tracking velocimetry. The proposed approach is based on Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) regression and relies on the solution of two constrained least square problems. The first one is the regression of the measurements to create an analytic representation of the velocity field. This regression can be constrained to impose boundary conditions (e.g. no-slip velocity on a wall or inlet conditions) or differential constraints (e.g. the solenoidal condition for an incompressible flow). The second one is the meshless integration of the pressure Poisson equation, achieved by seeking a solution in the form of a RBF expansion and using constraints to impose boundary conditions. We first illustrate the derivation of the two least square problems and the numerical techniques implemented for their solution. Then, we showcase the method with three numerical test cases of growing complexity. These are a 2D Gaussian Vortex, a 2D flow past a cylinder from CFD and a 3D Stokes flow past a sphere. Due to be launched in late 2021, the Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a NASA Small Explorer mission designed to perform polarization measurements in the 2-8 keV band, complemented with imaging, spectroscopy and timing capabilities. At the heart of the focal plane is a set of three polarization-sensitive Gas Pixel Detectors (GPD), each based on a custom ASIC acting as a charge-collecting anode. In this paper we shall review the design, manufacturing, and test of the IXPE focal-plane detectors, with particular emphasis on the connection between the science drivers, the performance metrics and the operational aspects. We shall present a thorough characterization of the GPDs in terms of effective noise, trigger efficiency, dead time, uniformity of response, and spectral and polarimetric performance. In addition, we shall discuss in detail a number of instrumental effects that are relevant for high-level science analysis -- particularly as far as the response to unpolarized radiation and the stability in time are concerned., Comment: To be published in Astroparticle Physics

A new numerical scheme is proposed for flow computation in complex discrete fracture networks. The method is based on a three-field formulation of the Darcy law for the description of the hydraulic head on the fractures and uses a cost functional to enforce the required coupling condition at fracture intersections. The resulting method can handle non conforming meshes, independently built on each geometrical object of the computational domain, and ensures local mass conservation properties at fracture intersections. Metis is the first solar coronagraph designed for a space mission capable of performing simultaneous imaging of the off-limb solar corona in both visible and UV light. The observations obtained with Metis aboard the Solar Orbiter ESA-NASA observatory will enable us to diagnose, with unprecedented temporal coverage and spatial resolution, the structures and dynamics of the full corona from 1.7 $R_\odot$ to about 9 $R_\odot$. Due to the uniqueness of the Solar Orbiter mission profile, Metis will be able to observe the solar corona from a close vantage point (down to 0.28 AU), achieving out-of-ecliptic views with the increase of the orbit inclination over time. Moreover, observations near perihelion, during the phase of lower rotational velocity of the solar surface relative to the spacecraft, will allow longer-term studies of the coronal features. Thanks to a novel occultation design and a combination of a UV interference coating of the mirrors and a spectral bandpass filter, Metis images the solar corona simultaneously in the visible light band, between 580 and 640 nm, and in the UV H I Lyman-{\alpha} line at 121.6 nm. The coronal images in both the UV Lyman-{\alpha} and polarised visible light are obtained at high spatial resolution with a spatial scale down to about 2000 km and 15000 km at perihelion, in the cases of the visible and UV light, respectively. A temporal resolution down to 1 second can be achieved when observing coronal fluctuations in visible light. The Metis measurements will allow for complete characterisation of the main physical parameters and dynamics of the electron and neutral hydrogen/proton plasma components of the corona in the region where the solar wind undergoes acceleration and where the onset and initial propagation of coronal mass ejections take place, thus significantly improving our understanding of the region connecting the Sun to the heliosphere.

Radar data collected at an experimental facility arranged on purpose suggest that the footprint of atmospheric turbulence might be encoded in the radar signal statistics. Radar data probability distributions are calculated and nicely fitted by a one parameter family of generalized Gumbel (GG) distributions, G(a). A relation between the wind strength and the measured shape parameter "a" is obtained. Strong wind fluctuations return pronounced asymmetric leptokurtic profiles, while Gaussian profiles are eventually recovered as the wind fluctuations decrease. Besides stressing the crucial impact of air turbulence for radar applications, we also confirm the adequacy of G(a) statistics for highly correlated complex systems.

In this paper we propose a learning paradigm for the problem of understanding spoken language. The basis of the work is in a formalization of the understanding problem as a communication problem. This results in the definition of a stochastic model of the production of speech or text starting from the meaning of a sentence. The resulting understanding algorithm consists in a Viterbi maximization procedure, analogous to that commonly used for recognizing speech. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) will expand the information space for study of cosmic sources, by adding linear polarization to the properties (time, energy, and position) observed in x-ray astronomy. Selected in 2017 January as a NASA Astrophysics Small Explorer (SMEX) mission, IXPE will be launched into an equatorial orbit in 2021. The IXPE mission will provide scientifically meaningful measurements of the x-ray polarization of a few dozen sources in the 2-8 keV band, including polarization maps of several x-ray-bright extended sources and phase-resolved polarimetry of many bright pulsating x-ray sources.
