Recently, interference-induced surface superconductivity (SC) has been predicted within an attractive Hubbard model with $s$-wave pairing, prompting intensive studies of its properties. The most notable finding is that the surface critical temperature $T_{cs}$ can be significantly enhanced relative to the bulk critical temperature $T_{cb}$. In this work, considering a $1D$ attractive Hubbard model for the half-filling level, we investigate how this enhancement is affected by variations in the Debye energy $\hbar\omega_D$, which controls the number of states contributing to the pair potential and, in turn, influences the critical temperature. Our study reveals a universal crossover of the surface SC from the weak- to strong-coupling regime, regardless of the specific value of the Debye energy. The location of this crossover is marked by the maximum of $\tau = (T_{cs} - T_{cb})/T_{cb}$, which depends strongly on $\hbar\omega_D$. At its maximum, $\tau$ can increase up to nearly $70\%$. Additionally, we examine the evolution of the ratio $\Delta_{s0}/k_B T_{cs}$ along the crossover, where $\Delta_{s0}$ is the zero-temperature pair potential near the surface (the chain ends), and demonstrate that this ratio can significantly deviate from $\Delta_{b0}/k_B T_{cb}$, where $\Delta_{b0}$ is the zero-temperature bulk pair potential (in the chain center). Recently, the superconducting properties of Fibonacci quasicrystals have attracted considerable attention. By numerically solving the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a Fibonacci chain under superconducting proximity, we find that the system exhibits universal end superconductivity, where the pair potential at the chain ends can persist at higher temperatures compared to the bulk critical temperature ($T_{cb}$) of the condensate in the chain center. Furthermore, our study reveals two distinct critical temperatures at the left end ($T_{cL}$) and right end ($T_{cR}$), governing the superconducting condensate at the chain ends. This complex behavior arises from the competition between topological bound states and critical states, characteristic of quasicrystals. Due to the geometric configuration of Fibonacci chain approximants, $T_{cL}$ and $T_{cb}$ are independent of the Fibonacci sequence number $n$, while $T_{cR}$ significantly depends on the parity of $n$. With the chosen parameters, the maximal enhancement of $T_{cR}$ occurs for even $n$, reaching up to $50\%$ relative to $T_{cb}$, while $T_{cL}$ can increase by up to $23\%$. Superconducting-proximity topological insulators (STIs) have garnered significant research attention over the past two decades. In this Letter, we demonstrate that a low-dimensional STI in the topological-nontrivial phase (TP) exhibits an interference-induced surface (boundary) superconductivity with the surface critical temperature $T_{cs}$ significantly higher than the bulk one $T_{cb}$. Such a surface superconductivity is built due to the interference of the scattering quasiparticle states, rather than due to the presence of the topological bound states (TBSs). As the system goes deeper into the TP, the surface exhibits a crossover from the interference- to TBS-induced phase, where the surface enhancement of superconductivity is governed by the TBSs. Our study unveils a substantial variation in the maximal $T_{cs}$ along this crossover, attaining values being twice the maximal bulk critical temperature of the STI. Beyond shedding light on the nature of surface superconductivity in STIs, our study introduces a tangible method for experimentally manipulating their critical superconducting temperatures., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Significant research has recently been conducted into the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states in kagome superconductors through theoretical modeling and experimental investigations. However, additional efforts are still needed to further understand the local superconductivity near magnetic impurities in the kagome lattice and clarify how relevant quantities depend on the interaction strength $J$ between such impurities and electrons. In this study, we explore a self-consistent numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for an $s$-wave superconducting kagome model with a single classical magnetic impurity. Our study reveals that with increasing $J$, the local pair potential is systematically depressed in the vicinity of the impurity, similar to previous results obtained for the square and triangular lattices. Moreover, when further increasing $J$, the system undergoes a first-order phase transition with the appearance of stable and metastable states, reflecting the presence of the hysteresis loop in the pertinent quantities. As a consequence of this transition, the minimal energy of the stable YSR state is nonzero at any $J$, contrary to the expectations based on the assumption of a constant pair potential. A distinctive feature of the kagome lattice is that characteristics of the first-order transition are very sensitive to the position of the chemical potential within the kagome energy spectrum., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Recently, a surface superconductor-insulator transition has been predicted for a bulk superconductor in an electric field applied perpendicular to its surface. The related calculations were performed within a one-dimensional Hubbard model by numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations without the Hartree-Fock (HF) interaction potential. The phase diagram of the surface superconducting, metallic, and insulating states was obtained as dependent on the electric field and temperature. This diagram was found to be in agreement with experimental results reported previously for (Li,Fe)OHFeSe thin flakes. In the present work, by taking into account the HF potential, we find that the latter acts as a kind of an extra electrostatic potential that enhances the electric-field effects on the surface states. The qualitative features of the phase diagram remain the same but the surface superconductor-insulator transition occurs at significantly lower electric fields, which supports prospects of its experimental observation in bulk samples., Comment: 5 figures

Nonmagnetic impurity scattering is known to shift up the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $\kappa$ of a superconductor. In this case, when the system is initially in type I, it can change its magnetic response, crossing the intertype domain with $\kappa \sim 1$ between the two standard superconductivity types and arriving at type II. In the present work we demonstrate that the impact of disorder can be much more profound in the presence of the multiband structure of the charge carrier states. In particular, when the band diffusivities differ from each other, the intertype domain tends to expand significantly, including points with $\kappa \gg 1$ that belong to deep type-II in conventional single-band superconductors. Our finding sheds light on the nontrivial disorder effect and significantly complements earlier results on the enlargement of the intertype domain in clean multiband superconductors., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure

Nucleation of the pair condensate near surfaces above the upper critical magnetic field and the pair-condensate enhancement/suppression induced by changes in the electron-phonon interaction at interfaces are the most known examples of the surface superconductivity. Recently, another example has been reported, when the surface enhancement of the critical superconducting temperature occurs due to quantum interference. In this case the pair states spread over the entire volume of the system while exhibiting the constructive interference near the surface. In the present work we investigate how an applied electric field impacts the interference-induced surface superconductivity. The study is based on a numerical solution of the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model. Our results demonstrate that the surface superconducting characteristics, especially the surface critical temperature, are sensitive to the applied electric field and can be tailored by changing its magnitude., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

It is well-known that the electric field can induce phase transitions between superconducting, metallic and insulating states in thin-film materials due to its control of the charge carrier density. Since a similar effect on the charge carriers can also be expected for surfaces of bulk samples, here we investigate the transformation of the surface states in a superconductor under an applied screened electric field. Our study is performed by numerically solving the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model. It is found that the surface insulating regime occurs at sufficiently large (but still experimentally accessible) electric fields. Our calculations yield the phase diagram of the surface superconducting, metallic, and insulating states for a wide range of temperatures and applied fields. Our results are in qualitative agreement with the phase diagram obtained by the transport measurements for (Li, Fe)OHFeSe thin flakes [Sci. In the usual perception, surface superconductivity is associated with the surface nucleation of a superconducting condensate above the upper critical field in type-II superconductors or with a rearrangement of phonon properties and the electron-phonon coupling near surfaces/interfaces. Recently, it has been found that there is another example when the surface superconducting temperature is increased up to 20-25% as compared to the bulk one due to constructive interference of superconducting pair states. In the present work, we demonstrate that in fact, such an interferenceinduced enhancement can be much more pronounced, up to nearly 70%. Furthermore, here it is shown that such an interference enhancement persists over a wide range of microscopic parameters.

Recently it has been demonstrated that the pair-exchange coupling of quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) bands with conventional higher-dimensional bands in one multiband superconducting material can result in the formation of robust aggregate pair condensate. In particular, it has been found that the Q1D thermal pair fluctuations are suppressed in the presence of deep conventional band(s), where the Fermi level is much larger than the characteristic cut-off energy. Here we report that impact of the Q1D fluctuations is significantly weakened even in the presence of nearly shallow higher-dimensional band(s), which shed new light on robust superconducting state observed in emerging chain-like-structured superconducting materials A_2Cr_3As_3 (A = K, Rb, Cs)., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Traditionally, the characteristic length of a superconducting condensate is associated with the spatial distribution of the corresponding gap function. However, the superconducting condensate is the quantum condensate of Cooper pairs and thus, the broader readership is more familiar with the concept of the Cooper-pair wave function. For conventional single-band superconductors, the gap function coincides with the center-of-mass wave function of a Cooper pair up to the coupling constant, and the corresponding gap- and wave-function characteristic lengths are the same. Surprisingly, we find that in two-band superconductors, these lengths are the same only near the critical temperature. At lower temperatures they can significantly deviate from each other, and the question arises as to which of these lengths should be given the preference when specifying the spatial scale of the band-dependent condensate in multiband superconducting materials.

Chain-like structured superconductive materials (such as A_2Cr_3As_3, with A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit the multiband electronic structure of single-particle states, where coexisting quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) and conventional higher-dimensional energy bands take part in the creation of the aggregate superconducting condensate. When the chemical potential approaches the edge of a Q1D band in a single-band superconductor, the corresponding mean-field critical temperature increases significantly but the superconductivity is quenched by fluctuations. However, recent investigation has revealed that when a Q1D band is coupled to a higher dimensional one by the interband Cooper-pair transfer, the thermal superconductive fluctuations can be suppressed so that the resulting critical temperature can be close to its mean-field value. In the present work, we calculate the mean-field T_c0 and fluctuation-shifted T_c critical temperatures for a two-band superconductor where a Q1D band coexists with a higher-dimensional band, and investigate how the thermal fluctuations are sensitive to the system parameters. We find that T_c is close to T_c0 in a wide range of microscopic parameters, and even the dimensionality of the higher-dimensional band does not play an essential role. Thus, the screening mechanism for suppressing fluctuations via the pair-exchange coupling between the bands is indeed relevant for a large class of Q1D multiband superconducting materials, encouraging further experiments aimed at reaching larger critical temperatures in such multiband superconductors., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, and Appendix with the calculations of the Ginzburg-Landau coefficients for a quasi-one-dimensional band

Small-angle neutron scattering is used in combination with transport measurements to investigate the current-induced effects on the morphology of the intermediate mixed state domains in the intertype superconductor niobium. We report the robust self-organisation of the vortex lattice domains to elongated parallel stripes perpendicular to the applied current in a steady-state. The experimental results for the formation of the superstructure are supported by theoretical calculations, which highlight important details of the vortex matter evolution. The investigation demonstrates a mechanism of a spontaneous pattern formation that is closely related to the universal physics governing the intermediate mixed state in low-$\kappa$ superconductors., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Recent chain-like structured materials have shown a robust superconducting phase. These materials exhibit the presence of quasi-one-dimensional bands (q1D) coupled to conventional higher-dimensional bands. On the mean-field level such systems have a high critical temperature when the chemical potential is close to the edge of a q1D band and the related Lifshitz transition is approached. However, the impact of the pair fluctuations compromises the mean-field results. Recently it has been demonstrated that these fluctuations can be suppressed (screened) by a specific multiband mechanism based on the pair-exchange coupling of the q1D condensate to a stable higher-dimensional one. In the present work we demonstrate that strikingly enough, this mechanism is not very sensitive to the basic parameters of the stable condensate such as its strength and dimensionality. For example, even the presence of a passive higher-dimensional band, which does not exhibit any superconducting correlations when taken as a separate superconductor, results in suppression of the pair fluctuations.

By numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for the single vortex state in a two-band superconductor, we demonstrate that the disparity between the healing lengths of two contributing condensates is strongly affected by the band Fermi velocities, even in the presence of the magnetic field and far beyond the regime of nearly zero Josephson-like coupling between bands. Changing the ratio of the band Fermi velocities alters the temperature dependence of the condensate lengths and significantly shifts parameters of the ``length-scales locking" regime at which the two characteristic lengths approach one another., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

It is well-known that quasi-one-dimensional superconductors suffer from the pairing fluctuations that significantly reduce the superconducting temperature or even completely suppress any coherent behavior. Here we demonstrate that a coupling to a robust pair condensate changes the situation dramatically. There is a tacit assumption that multiband superconductors are essentially the same as multigap superconductors. More precisely, it is usually assumed that the number of excitation gaps in the single-particle energy spectrum of a uniform superconductor determines the number of contributing bands in the corresponding superconducting model. Here we demonstrate that contrary to this widely accepted viewpoint, the superconducting magnetic properties are sensitive to the number of contributing bands even when the corresponding excitation gaps are degenerate and cannot be distinguished. In particular, we find that the crossover between superconductivity types I and II - the intertype regime - is strongly affected by difference between characteristic lengths of multiple contributing condensates. The reason for this is that condensates with diverse characteristic lengths coexisting in one system interfere constructively or destructively, which results in multi-condensate magnetic phenomena regardless of the presence/absence of the multigap structure in the single-particle excitation spectrum., Comment: 13 pages and 2 figures

Interactions between vortices in thin superconducting films are investigated in the crossover (intertype) regime between superconductivity types I and II. We consider two main factors responsible for this crossover: a) changes in the material characteristics of the film and b) variations of the film thickness controlling the effect of the stray magnetic fields outside superconducting sample. The analysis is done within the formalism that combines the perturbation expansion of the microscopic equations to one order beyond the Ginzburg-Landau theory with the leading contribution of the stray fields. It is shown that the latter gives rise to qualitatively different spatial profile and temperature dependence of the vortex interaction potential, as compared to bulk vortex interactions. The resulting interaction is long-range repulsive while exhibiting complex competition of attraction and repulsion at small and intermediate separations of vortices. We analyze the paradigmatic competition between intra-band and cross-band Cooper-pair formation in two-band superconductors, neglected in most works to date. We derive the phase-sensitive gap equations and describe the crossover between the intraband-dominated and the crossband-dominated regimes, delimited by a ``gapless'' state. Experimental signatures of crosspairing comprise notable gap-splitting in the excitation spectrum, non-BCS behavior of gaps versus temperature, as well as changes in the pairing symmetry as a function of temperature. The consequences of these findings are illustrated on the examples of MgB$_2$ and Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$.

Self-duality or matching between the magnetic and condensate characteristic lengths is a fundamental property of isotropic superconductors at the critical Bogomolnyi point (B-point). The self-dual state of the condensate is infinitely degenerate, which is the core reason for the sharp transition between the superconductivity types in the nearest vicinity of the critical temperature T_c. Below T_c non-local interactions in the condensate remove the degeneracy, which leads to the appearance of a finite intertype (IT) domain between types I and II. This domain exhibits the mixed state with exotic field-condensate configurations and non-standard magnetic response, which cannot be understood within the dichotomy of the conventional superconductivity types. At a first glance, this picture does not apply to an anisotropic system because no spatial matching between the condensate and magnetic field can be generally expected for direction-dependent characteristic lengths. However, contrary to these expectations, here we demonstrate that anisotropic superconductors follow the same scenario of the interchange between types I and II. In anisotropic materials the IT domain is governed by the B-point of the effective isotropic model obtained by the appropriate scaling transformation of the initial anisotropic formalism. This transformation depends on the direction of the applied magnetic field, and thus the superconductivity type of strongly anisotropic materials can be dependent on this direction., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Thin superconducting films are usually regarded as type II superconductors even when they are made of a type I material. The reason is a strong contribution of the stray magnetic field that stabilizes vortices. While very thin films indeed reach this limit, there is a large interval of film thicknesses where the magnetic properties cannot be classified as either of the two conventional superconductivity types. Recent calculations revealed that in this interval the system exhibits spontaneous formation of complex condensate-field patterns that are very sensitive to system parameters, in particular, the temperature and the applied magnetic field. The corresponding superconducting magnetic properties can be attributed to a special regime of the intertype superconductivity whose physical origin lies in the removal of an infinite degeneracy of the self-dual superconducting state at the critical Bogomolnyi point. Here we demonstrate that qualitative characteristics of the intertype superstructures in thin superconducting films are independent of the choice of the in-plane boundary conditions for the order parameter and the magnetic field., Comment: 5 figures

A combination of strong Cooper pairing and weak superconducting fluctuations is crucial to achieve and stabilize high-Tc superconductivity. We demonstrate that a coexistence of a shallow carrier band with strong pairing and a deep band with weak pairing, together with the Josephson-like pair transfer between the bands to couple the two condensates, realizes an optimal multicomponent superconductivity regime: it preserves strong pairing to generate large gaps and a very high critical temperature but screens the detrimental superconducting fluctuations, thereby suppressing the pseudogap state. Surprisingly, we find that the screening is very efficient even when the inter-band coupling is very small. Thus, a multi-band superconductor with a coherent mixture of condensates in the BCS regime (deep band) and in the BCS-BEC crossover regime (shallow band) offers a promising route to higher critical temperatures., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, including supplemental materials

It is well-known that the appearance of almost-empty (shallow) conduction bands in solids strongly affects their superconducting properties. In a shallow band charge carriers are depleted and have nearly zero velocities so that the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluidity to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is approached. Based on a two-band prototype system with one shallow and one deep band, we demonstrate that the fundamental phase diagram of the superconducting magnetic response changes qualitatively as compared to standard superconductors with only deep bands. The so-called intertype (IT) domain between superconductivity types I and II systematically expands in the phase diagram when passing from the BCS to BEC side: its width is inversely proportional to the squared Cooper-pair radius that shrinks several orders of magnitude through the crossover. We also show that the coupling to a stable condensate of the deep band makes the system rather robust against the otherwise strong superconducting fluctuations. Thus, the BCS-BEC crossover induced by a shallow band pushes standard superconductivity types wide apart so that the IT domain tends to dominate the phase diagram and therefore the magnetic properties of shallow-band superconductors., Comment: 1 figure

Magnetic response is a fundamental property of superconducting materials, which helps to distinguish two superconductivity types: the ideally diamagnetic type I and type II, which can develop the mixed state with Abrikosov vortices. We demonstrate that multi-band superconductors with one shallow band, that have recently attracted much attention for their high critical temperatures and unusual properties, often stay apart of this simple classification. Superconductors, ideally diamagnetic when in the Meissner state, can also exhibit paramagnetic behavior due to trapped magnetic flux. In the absence of pinning such paramagnetic response is weak, and ceases with increasing sample thickness. Here we show that in multiband superconductors paramagnetic response can be observed even in slab geometries, and can be far larger than any previous estimate - even multiply larger than the diamagnetic Meissner response for the same applied magnetic field. We link the appearance of this giant paramagnetic response to the broad crossover between conventional Type-I and Type-II superconductors, where Abrikosov vortices interact non-monotonically and multibody effects become important, causing unique flux configurations and their locking in the presence of surfaces., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Bogomolnyi critical point, originally introduced in string theories, is fundamental to superconductivity. At the critical temperature T_c it marks the sharp border between ideally diamagnetic bulk type-I superconductors and type-II ones that can host vortices, while itself it harbors infinitely degenerate distributions of magnetic flux in the superconducting state. Here we show that below T_c the physics of the Bogomolnyi critical point projects onto a wider range of microscopic parameters, even extremely wide for multiband superconductors. In this critical range, the degeneracy of the superconducting state at Tc is lifted into a sequence of novel topological equilibria and the customary understanding of superconducting phenomena does not suffice. As a radical departure from traditional views, we introduce the paradigm of critical superconductors, discuss their distinct magnetic properties, advocate their subdivision in terms of possible intermediate states, and demonstrate direct relevance of this paradigm to superconducting materials of prime interest today., Comment: submitted to PRL

A procedure to derive the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory from the multiband BCS Hamiltonian is developed in a general case with an arbitrary number of bands and arbitrary interaction matrix. It combines the standard Gor'kov truncation and a subsequent reconstruction in order to match accuracies of the obtained terms. This reconstruction recovers the phenomenological GL theory as obtained from the Landau model of phase transitions but offers explicit microscopic expressions for the relevant parameters. Detailed calculations are presented for a three-band system treated as a prototype multiband superconductor. It is demonstrated that the symmetry in the coupling matrix may lead to the chiral ground state with the phase frustration, typical for systems with broken time-reversal symmetry., Comment: 9 pages

To date, several experimental groups reported measurements of the thickness dependence of T_c of atomically uniform single-crystalline Pb nanofilms. The reported amplitude of the T_c-oscillations varies significantly from one experiment to another. Here we propose that the reason for this unresolved issue is an interplay of the quantum-size variations in the single-electron density of states with thickness-dependent oscillations in the phonon mediated electron-electron coupling. Such oscillations in the coupling depend on the substrate material, the quality of the interface, the protection cover and other details of the fabrication process, changing from one experiment to another. This explains why the available data do not exhibit one-voice consistency about the amplitude of the T_c-oscillations. Our analyses are based on a numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a superconducting slab.

We derive the extended Ginzburg-Landau (GL) formalism for a clean s-wave two-band superconductor by employing a systematic expansion of the free-energy functional and the corresponding matrix gap equation in powers of the small deviation from the critical temperature tau = 1-T/T_c. The two lowest orders of this expansion produce the equation for T_c and the GL theory. It is shown that in agreement with previous studies, the two-band GL theory maps onto the single-band GL model and thus fails to describe the difference in the spatial profiles of the two band condensates. We prove that except for some very special cases, this difference appears already in the leading correction to the GL theory, which constitutes the extended GL formalism. We derive linear differential equations that determine the leading corrections to the band order parameters and magnetic field, discuss the validity of these equations, and consider examples of an important interplay between the band condensates. Finally, we present numerical results for the thermodynamic critical magnetic field and temperature-dependent band gaps (at zero field), which are in a very good agreement with those obtained from the full BCS approach in a wide temperature range. To this end, we emphasize the advantages of our extended GL theory in comparison with the often used two-component GL-like model based on an unreconstructed two-band generalization of the Gor'kov derivation.

We show that two-band superconductors harbor hidden criticality deep in the superconducting state, stemming from the critical temperature of the weaker band taken as an independent system. For sufficiently small interband coupling $\gamma$ the coherence length of the weaker band exhibits a remarkable deviation from the conventional monotonic increase with temperature, namely, a pronounced peak close to the hidden critical point. The magnitude of the peak scales proportionally to \gamma^(-\mu), with the Landau critical exponent \mu = 1/3, the same as found for the mean-field critical behavior with respect to the source field in ferromagnets and ferroelectrics. Here reported hidden criticality of multi-band superconductors can be experimentally observed by, e.g., imaging of the variations of the vortex core in a broader temperature range. Quantum-size oscillations of the basic physical characteristics of a confined fermionic condensate are a well-known phenomenon. Its conventional understanding is based on the single-particle physics, whereby the oscillations follow the size-dependent changes in the single-particle density of states. Here we present a study of a cigar-shaped ultracold superfluid Fermi gas, which demonstrates an important many-body aspect of the quantum-size effects, overlooked previously. The many-body physics is revealed in the atypical crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) induced by the size quantization of the particle motion. Quantized perpendicular spectrum results in the formation of single-particle subbands (shells) so that the aggregate fermionic condensate becomes a coherent mixture of subband condensates. Each time when the lower edge of a subband crosses the chemical potential, the BCS-BEC crossover is approached in this subband, and the aggregate condensate contains both the BCS and BEC-like components., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Quantum confinement is known to influence fermionic condensates, resulting in quantum-size oscillations of superfluid/superconducting properties. Here we show that the impact of quantum-size effects is even more dramatic. Under realistic conditions, a significant phase-space reconfiguration induced by quantum-size effects opens a quasi-molecule channel in the fermionic pairing so that the condensed pairs exhibit features typical of a molecular state. As an illustration we consider a quasi-one-dimensional fermionic condensate, as realized, e.g., in cigar-shaped atomic Fermi gases or superconducting quantum wires. In this case the transverse quantization of the particle motion favors pairing through a coherent superposition of quantum channels that are formed due to the grouping of single-particle levels into a series of well distinguished subbands. Whenever the bottom of a subband approaches the Fermi level, the longitudinal spatial distribution of fermions in a condensed pair becomes strongly localized within the corresponding quantum channel. The fermionic pairs in this channel resemble molecules with bosonic character.

Based on the Gor'kov formalism for a clean s-wave superconductor, we develop an extended version of the single-band Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory by means of a systematic expansion in the deviation from the critical temperature T_c, i.e., tau=1-T/T_c. We calculate different contributions to the order parameter and the magnetic field: the leading contributions (~ tau^1/2 in the order parameter and ~ tau in the magnetic field) are controlled by the standard Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, while the next-to-leading terms (~ tau^3/2 in the gap and ~ tau^2 in the magnetic field) constitute the extended GL (EGL) approach. We derive the free-energy functional for the extended formalism and the corresponding expression for the current density. To illustrate the usefulness of our formalism, we calculate, in a semi-analytical form, the temperature-dependent correction to the GL parameter at which the surface energy becomes zero, and analytically, the temperature dependence of the thermodynamic critical field. We demonstrate that the EGL formalism is not just a mathematical extension to the theory - variations of both the gap and the thermodynamic critical field with temperature calculated within the EGL theory are found in very good agreement with the full BCS results down to low temperatures, which dramatically improves the applicability of the formalism compared to its standard predecessor.

Quantum confinement of the perpendicular motion of electrons in single-crystalline metallic superconducting nanofilms splits the conduction band into a series of single-electron subbands. A distinctive feature of such a nanoscale multi-band superconductor is that the energetic position of each subband can vary significantly with changing nanofilm thickness, substrate material, protection cover and other details of the fabrication process. It can occur that the bottom of one of the available subbands is situated in the vicinity of the Fermi level. We demonstrate that the character of the superconducting pairing in such a subband changes dramatically and exhibits a clear molecule-like trend, which is very similar to the well-known crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime to Bose-Einstein condensation (BCS-BEC) observed in trapped ultracold fermions. For Pb nanofilms with thickness of 4 and 5 monolayers (ML) this will lead to a spectacular scenario: up to half of all the Cooper pairs nearly collapse, shrinking in the lateral size (parallel to the nanofilm) down to a few nanometers. As a result, the superconducting condensate will be a coherent mixture of almost molecule-like fermionic pairs with ordinary, extended Cooper pairs., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Using the Ginzburg-Landau theory extended to the next-to-leading order we determine numerically the healing lengths of the two order parameters at the two-gap superconductor/normal metal interface. We demonstrate on several examples that those can be significantly different even in the strict domain of applicability of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. This justifies the use of this theory to describe relevant physics of two-gap superconductors, distinguishing them from their single-gap counterparts. The calculational degree of complexity increases only slightly with respect to the conventional Ginzburg-Landau expansion, thus the extended Ginzburg-Landau model remains numerically far less demanding compared to the full microscopic approaches., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Recent observation of unusual vortex patterns in MgB_2 single crystals raised speculations about a new type of superconductivity (named "type-1.5"). However, the strict application of the standard two-band Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory results in simply proportional order parameters of the two bands - and does not support the "type-1.5" behavior. Here we derive the extended GL formalism (accounting all terms of the next order over the small t= 1- T/T_c parameter) for a two-band clean s-wave superconductor and show that the two condensates generally have different spatial scales, with difference disappearing only in the limit T -> T_c. The extended version of the two-band GL formalism improves the validity of GL theory below T_c, and suggests revisiting of the earlier calculations based on the standard model.

It is well-known that the formation of discrete electron levels strongly influences the pairing in metallic nanograins. Here we focus on another effect of quantum confinement in superconducting grains that was not studied previously, i.e., spatially nonuniform pairing. This effect is very significant when single-electron levels form bunches and/or a kind of shell structure: in highly symmetric grains the order parameter can exhibit variations with position by an order of magnitude. Nonuniform pairing is closely related to a quantum-confinement induced modification of the pairing-interaction matrix elements and size-dependent pinning of the chemical potential to groups of degenerate or nearly degenerate levels. For illustration we consider spherical metallic nanograins. We show that the relevant matrix elements are as a rule enhanced in the presence of quantum confinement, which favors spatial variations of the order parameter, compensating the corresponding energy cost. The size-dependent pinning of the chemical potential further increases the spatial variation of the pair condensate. The role of nonuniform pairing is smaller in less symmetric confining geometries and/or in the presence of disorder. However, it always remains of importance when the energy spacing between discrete electron levels $\delta$ is approaching the scale of the bulk gap $\Delta_B$, i.e., $\delta > 0.1$-$0.2\,\Delta_B$.

The Cooper-pair size (i.e., the BCS coherence length) in low-dimensional superconductors is dramatically modified by quantum-size effects. In particular, for nanowires made of conventional superconducting materials, we show that the coherence length exhibits size-dependent drops by two-three orders of magnitude and reaches values found in high-$T_c$ superconductors. This phenomenon is surprisingly similar to the well-known BCS-BEC crossover but with one important exception: it is driven by the transverse quantization of the electron spectrum rather than by the strength of the fermion-fermion interaction. Similar results can be expected for other systems with the same structure of the single-particle spectrum, e.g, for superfluid Fermi gases confined in a quantum-wire or quantum-well geometry.

It is well-known that in bulk, the solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations is the same whether or not the Hartree-Fock term is included. Here the Hartree-Fock potential is position independent and, so, gives the same contribution to both the single-electron energies and the Fermi level (the chemical potential). Thus, the single-electron energies measured from the Fermi level (they control the solution) stay the same. It is not the case for nanostructured superconductors, where quantum confinement breaks the translational symmetry and results in a position dependent Hartree-Fock potential. In this case its contribution to the single-electron energies depends on the relevant quantum numbers. We numerically solved the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with the Hartree-Fock term for a clean superconducting nanocylinder and found a shift of the curve representing the thickness-dependent oscillations of the critical superconducting temperature to larger diameters.

In high-quality nanowires, quantum confinement of the transverse electron motion splits the band of single-electron states in a series of subbands. This changes in a qualitative way the scenario of the magnetic-field induced superconductor-to-normal transition. We numerically solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a clean metallic cylindrical nanowire at zero temperature in a parallel magnetic field and find that for diameters D < 10-15 nm, this transition occurs as a cascade of subsequent jumps in the order parameter (this is opposed to the smooth second-order phase transition in the mesoscopic regime). Each jump is associated with the depairing of electrons in one of the single-electron subbands. As a set of subbands contribute to the order parameter, the depairing process occurs as a cascade of jumps. We find pronounced quantum-size oscillations of the critical magnetic field with giant resonant enhancements. In addition to these orbital effects, the paramagnetic breakdown of Cooper pairing also contributes but only for smaller diameters, i. e., D < 5 nm.

We present a generalized Galitskii approach for the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the two-particle vertex function of a Fermi system with resonant interaction by accounting for the resonant state in the scattering potential and utilizing the universal form of the resonant scattering amplitude. The procedure can be carried out both for the normal as well as for the condensate state. In both cases, the vertex function in the vicinity of the resonance is shown to formally coincide with that obtained for a weakly attractive Fermi gas. Thus we justify the popular calculational framework in which results for the weakly attractive Fermi gas are formally extrapolated into the domain of strong coupling, and further to the repulsive side of the resonance, where molecular states are formed., Comment: 7 pages, to appear in Physical Review B

A shape-dependent superconducting resonance can be expected when an energy level associated with the transverse motion in a wire passes through the Fermi surface. We study the shape resonance effect associated with the confined transverse superconducting modes of a cylindrical nanowire in the clean limit. Results of numerical investigations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations show significant deviations of the energy gap parameter from its bulk value with a profound effect on the transition temperature. A dilute homogeneous 3D Fermi gas in the ground state is considered for the case of a repulsive pairwise interaction. The low-density (dilution) expansions for the kinetic and interaction energies of the system in question are calculated up to the third order in the dilution parameter. Similar to the recent results for a Bose gas, the calculated quantities turn out to depend on a pairwise interaction through the two characteristic lengths: the former, $a$, is the well-known s-wave scattering length, and the latter, $b$, is related to $a$ by $b=a-m (\partial a/\partial m)$, where $m$ stands for the fermion mass. To take control of the results, calculations are fulfilled in two independent ways. The first involves the Hellmann-Feynman theorem, taken in conjunction with a helpful variational theorem for the scattering length. This way is used to derive the kinetic and interaction energies from the familiar low-density expansion of the total system energy first found by Huang and Yang. The second way operates with the in-medium pair wave functions. It allows one to derive the quantities of interest``from the scratch'', with no use of the total energy. An important result of the present investigation is that the pairwise interaction of fermions makes an essential contribution to their kinetic energy. Moreover, there is a complicated and interesting interplay of these quantities.

The kinetic and interaction energies of a three-dimensional dilute ground-state Bose gas confined in a trap are calculated beyond a mean-field treatment. They are found to depend on the pairwise interaction trough two characteristic lengths: the first, a, is the well-known scattering length and the second, b, is related to the latter by b=a-\lambda d a/d\lambda with \lambda being the coupling constant. Numerical estimations show that the pairwise interaction energy of a dilute gas of alkali atoms in a trap is negative (in spite of the positive scattering length); its absolute value is found by about the order of magnitude larger than that of the mean-field interaction energy that corresponds to the last term in the Gross-Pitaevskii functional., Comment: 5 pages, REVTeX, 1 figure inserted

A dilute two-dimensional (2D) Bose gas at zero temperature is studied by the method developed earlier by the authors. Low density expansions are derived for the chemical potential, ground state energy, kinetic and interaction energies. The expansion parameter is found to be a dimensionless in-medium scattering amplitude u obeying the equation 1/u+\ln u=-\ln(na^2\pi)-2\gamma, where na^2 and \gamma are the gas parameter and the Euler constant, respectively. It is shown that the ground state energy is mostly kinetic in the low density limit; this result does not depend on a specific form of the pairwise interaction potential, contrary to 3D case. The purpose of the present article is to call attention to some realistic quasiparticle-based description of the quark/gluon matter and its consistent implementation in thermodynamics. A simple and transparent representation of the thermodynamical consistency conditions is given. This representation allows one to review critically and systemize available phenomenological approaches to the deconfinement problem with respect to their thermodynamical consistency. A particular attention is paid to the development of a method for treating the string screening in the dense matter of unbound color charges. The proposed method yields an integrable effective pair potential which can be incorporated into the mean-field picture. The results of its application are in reasonable agreement with lattice data on the QCD thermodynamics., Comment: revised figures, minor style corrections and added new references

The modified Bogoliubov model where the primordial interaction is replaced by the t matrix is reinvestigated. It is shown to provide a negative value of the kinetic energy for a strongly interacting dilute Bose gas, contrary to the original Bogoliubov model. To clear up the origin of this failure, the correct values of the kinetic and interaction energies of a dilute Bose gas are calculated. It is demonstrated that both the problem of the negative kinetic energy and the ultraviolet divergence, dating back to the well-known paper of Lee, Yang and Huang, is connected with an inadequate picture of the short-range boson correlations. These correlations are reconsidered within the thermodynamically consistent model proposed earlier by the present authors. It is demonstrated that there exists a direct correlation between chemical freeze-out point and the softest point of the equation of state where the pressure divided by the energy density, $p(\epsilon)/\epsilon$, has a minimum. A dynamical model is given as an example where the passage of the softest point coincides with the condition for chemical freeze-out, namely an average energy per hadron $\approx$ 1 GeV. The collective motion of nucleons from high-energy heavy-ion collisions is analyzed within a relativistic two-fluid model for different equations of state (EoS). As function of beam energy the theoretical slope parameter F_y of the differential directed flow is in good agreement with experimental data, when calculated for the QCD-consistent EoS described by the statistical mixed-phase model. Within this model, which takes the deconfinement phase transition into account, the excitation function of the directed flow turns out to be a smooth function in the whole range from SIS till SPS energies. This function is close to that for pure hadronic EoS and exhibits no minimum predicted earlier for a two-phase bag-model EoS.
