Study Objectives: We investigate using Mamba-based deep learning approaches for sleep staging on signals from ANNE One (Sibel Health, Evanston, IL), a minimally intrusive dual-sensor wireless wearable system measuring chest electrocardiography (ECG), triaxial accelerometry, and temperature, as well as finger photoplethysmography (PPG) and temperature. Methods: We obtained wearable sensor recordings from 360 adults undergoing concurrent clinical polysomnography (PSG) at a tertiary care sleep lab. PSG recordings were scored according to AASM criteria. PSG and wearable sensor data were automatically aligned using their ECG channels with manual confirmation by visual inspection. We trained Mamba-based models with both convolutional-recurrent neural network (CRNN) and the recurrent neural network (RNN) architectures on these recordings. Ensembling of model variants with similar architectures was performed. Results: Our best approach, after ensembling, attains a 3-class (wake, NREM, REM) balanced accuracy of 83.50%, F1 score of 84.16%, Cohen's $\kappa$ of 72.68%, and a MCC score of 72.84%; a 4-class (wake, N1/N2, N3, REM) balanced accuracy of 74.64%, F1 score of 74.56%, Cohen's $\kappa$ of 61.63%, and MCC score of 62.04%; a 5-class (wake, N1, N2, N3, REM) balanced accuracy of 64.30%, F1 score of 66.97%, Cohen's $\kappa$ of 53.23%, MCC score of 54.38%. Electric vehicles are rapidly gaining popularity as a sustainable alternative to conventional gasoline. In urban areas, chargers with different ratings can accommodate the diverse needs of electric vehicles. However, the available multiport topologies have variable switching frequencies. This paper introduces a hybrid multiport isolated DC-DC converter for urban charging stations, incorporating fast and slow charging ports with a fixed switching frequency. It provides isolation and enables soft switching on the primary side of the converter without circulating current on its secondary side. The primary side does not need feedback, which reduces complexity. The second stage generates a wide output voltage range to charge the electric vehicle battery by employing a switch. In addition, the proposed topology offers reduced component count and simple control with fixed-frequency operation. This paper provides the concept and the operation modes. A remarkable characteristic of quantum computing is the potential for reliable computation despite faulty qubits. This can be achieved through quantum error correction, which is typically implemented by repeatedly applying static syndrome checks, permitting correction of logical information. Recently, the development of time-dynamic approaches to error correction has uncovered new codes and new code implementations. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate three time-dynamic implementations of the surface code, each offering a unique solution to hardware design challenges and introducing flexibility in surface code realization. First, we embed the surface code on a hexagonal lattice, reducing the necessary couplings per qubit from four to three. Second, we walk a surface code, swapping the role of data and measure qubits each round, achieving error correction with built-in removal of accumulated non-computational errors. Finally, we realize the surface code using iSWAP gates instead of the traditional CNOT, extending the set of viable gates for error correction without additional overhead. We measure the error suppression factor when scaling from distance-3 to distance-5 codes of $\Lambda_{35,\text{hex}} = 2.15(2)$, $\Lambda_{35,\text{walk}} = 1.69(6)$, and $\Lambda_{35,\text{iSWAP}} = 1.56(2)$, achieving state-of-the-art error suppression for each. Quantum error correction is essential for bridging the gap between the error rates of physical devices and the extremely low logical error rates required for quantum algorithms. Recent error-correction demonstrations on superconducting processors have focused primarily on the surface code, which offers a high error threshold but poses limitations for logical operations. In contrast, the color code enables much more efficient logic, although it requires more complex stabilizer measurements and decoding techniques. Measuring these stabilizers in planar architectures such as superconducting qubits is challenging, and so far, realizations of color codes have not addressed performance scaling with code size on any platform. Here, we present a comprehensive demonstration of the color code on a superconducting processor, achieving logical error suppression and performing logical operations. Scaling the code distance from three to five suppresses logical errors by a factor of $\Lambda_{3/5}$ = 1.56(4). Simulations indicate this performance is below the threshold of the color code, and furthermore that the color code may be more efficient than the surface code with modest device improvements. Using logical randomized benchmarking, we find that transversal Clifford gates add an error of only 0.0027(3), which is substantially less than the error of an idling error correction cycle. We inject magic states, a key resource for universal computation, achieving fidelities exceeding 99% with post-selection (retaining about 75% of the data). Finally, we successfully teleport logical states between distance-three color codes using lattice surgery, with teleported state fidelities between 86.5(1)% and 90.7(1)%. This work establishes the color code as a compelling research direction to realize fault-tolerant quantum computation on superconducting processors in the near future.

One of the most challenging problems in the computational study of localization in quantum manybody systems is to capture the effects of rare events, which requires sampling over exponentially many disorder realizations. We implement an efficient procedure on a quantum processor, leveraging quantum parallelism, to efficiently sample over all disorder realizations. We observe localization without disorder in quantum many-body dynamics in one and two dimensions: perturbations do not diffuse even though both the generator of evolution and the initial states are fully translationally invariant. The disorder strength as well as its density can be readily tuned using the initial state. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of our platform by measuring Renyi entropies. Our method could also be extended to higher moments of the physical observables and disorder learning.

Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) can be employed to understand a wide range of phenomena, from elementary particle scattering in high-energy physics to effective descriptions of many-body interactions in materials. Studying dynamical properties of emergent phases can be challenging as it requires solving many-body problems that are generally beyond perturbative limits. We investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT using a two-dimensional lattice of superconducting qubits. We first construct a simple variational circuit which prepares low-energy states that have a large overlap with the ground state; then we create particles with local gates and simulate their quantum dynamics via a discretized time evolution. As the effective magnetic field is increased, our measurements show signatures of transitioning from deconfined to confined dynamics. For confined excitations, the magnetic field induces a tension in the string connecting them. Our method allows us to experimentally image string dynamics in a (2+1)D LGT from which we uncover two distinct regimes inside the confining phase: for weak confinement the string fluctuates strongly in the transverse direction, while for strong confinement transverse fluctuations are effectively frozen. In addition, we demonstrate a resonance condition at which dynamical string breaking is facilitated. Our LGT implementation on a quantum processor presents a novel set of techniques for investigating emergent particle and string dynamics.

Sleep is known to be a key factor in emotional regulation and overall mental health. In this study, we explore the integration of sleep measures from the previous night into wearable-based mood recognition. To this end, we propose NapTune, a novel prompt-tuning framework that utilizes sleep-related measures as additional inputs to a frozen pre-trained wearable time-series encoder by adding and training lightweight prompt parameters to each Transformer layer. Through rigorous empirical evaluation, we demonstrate that the inclusion of sleep data using NapTune not only improves mood recognition performance across different wearable time-series namely ECG, PPG, and EDA, but also makes it more sample-efficient. Our method demonstrates significant improvements over the best baselines and unimodal variants. Quantum error correction provides a path to reach practical quantum computing by combining multiple physical qubits into a logical qubit, where the logical error rate is suppressed exponentially as more qubits are added. However, this exponential suppression only occurs if the physical error rate is below a critical threshold. In this work, we present two surface code memories operating below this threshold: a distance-7 code and a distance-5 code integrated with a real-time decoder. The logical error rate of our larger quantum memory is suppressed by a factor of $\Lambda$ = 2.14 $\pm$ 0.02 when increasing the code distance by two, culminating in a 101-qubit distance-7 code with 0.143% $\pm$ 0.003% error per cycle of error correction. This logical memory is also beyond break-even, exceeding its best physical qubit's lifetime by a factor of 2.4 $\pm$ 0.3. We maintain below-threshold performance when decoding in real time, achieving an average decoder latency of 63 $\mu$s at distance-5 up to a million cycles, with a cycle time of 1.1 $\mu$s. To probe the limits of our error-correction performance, we run repetition codes up to distance-29 and find that logical performance is limited by rare correlated error events occurring approximately once every hour, or 3 $\times$ 10$^9$ cycles. Building on our prior explorations of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for financial data processing, this paper introduces two significant enhancements to refine our CNN model's predictive performance and robustness for financial tabular data. Firstly, we integrate a normalization layer at the input stage to ensure consistent feature scaling, addressing the issue of disparate feature magnitudes that can skew the learning process. This modification is hypothesized to aid in stabilizing the training dynamics and improving the model's generalization across diverse financial datasets. Secondly, we employ a Gradient Reduction Architecture, where earlier layers are wider and subsequent layers are progressively narrower. This enhancement is designed to enable the model to capture more complex and subtle patterns within the data, a crucial factor in accurately predicting financial outcomes. These advancements directly respond to the limitations identified in previous studies, where simpler models struggled with the complexity and variability inherent in financial applications. Initial tests confirm that these changes improve accuracy and model stability, suggesting that deeper and more nuanced network architectures can significantly benefit financial predictive tasks. This paper introduces a novel method for the stability analysis of positive feedback systems with a class of fully connected feedforward neural networks (FFNN) controllers. By establishing sector bounds for fully connected FFNNs without biases, we present a stability theorem that demonstrates the global exponential stability of linear systems under fully connected FFNN control. Utilizing principles from positive Lur'e systems and the positive Aizerman conjecture, our approach effectively addresses the challenge of ensuring stability in highly nonlinear systems. The crux of our method lies in maintaining sector bounds that preserve the positivity and Hurwitz property of the overall Lur'e system. Understanding how interacting particles approach thermal equilibrium is a major challenge of quantum simulators. Unlocking the full potential of such systems toward this goal requires flexible initial state preparation, precise time evolution, and extensive probes for final state characterization. We present a quantum simulator comprising 69 superconducting qubits which supports both universal quantum gates and high-fidelity analog evolution, with performance beyond the reach of classical simulation in cross-entropy benchmarking experiments. Emulating a two-dimensional (2D) XY quantum magnet, we leverage a wide range of measurement techniques to study quantum states after ramps from an antiferromagnetic initial state. We observe signatures of the classical Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition, as well as strong deviations from Kibble-Zurek scaling predictions attributed to the interplay between quantum and classical coarsening of the correlated domains. This interpretation is corroborated by injecting variable energy density into the initial state, which enables studying the effects of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in targeted parts of the eigenspectrum. Finally, we digitally prepare the system in pairwise-entangled dimer states and image the transport of energy and vorticity during thermalization. These results establish the efficacy of superconducting analog-digital quantum processors for preparing states across many-body spectra and unveiling their thermalization dynamics.

Measured Bidirectional Texture Function (BTF) can faithfully reproduce a realistic appearance but is costly to acquire and store due to its 6D nature (2D spatial and 4D angular). Therefore, it is practical and necessary for rendering to synthesize BTFs from a small example patch. While previous methods managed to produce plausible results, we find that they seldomly take into consideration the property of being dynamic, so a BTF must be synthesized before the rendering process, resulting in limited size, costly pre-generation and storage issues. In this paper, we propose a dynamic BTF synthesis scheme, where a BTF at any position only needs to be synthesized when being queried. Our insight is that, with the recent advances in neural dimension reduction methods, a BTF can be decomposed into disjoint low-dimensional components. We can perform dynamic synthesis only on the positional dimensions, and during rendering, recover the BTF by querying and combining these low-dimensional functions with the help of a lightweight Multilayer Perceptron (MLP). Consequently, we obtain a fully dynamic 6D BTF synthesis scheme that does not require any pre-generation, which enables efficient rendering of our infinitely large and non-repetitive BTFs on the fly. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method through various types of BTFs taken from UBO2014.

We introduce Reflectance Diffusion, a new neural text-to-texture model capable of generating high-fidelity SVBRDF maps from textual descriptions. Our method leverages a tandem neural approach, consisting of two modules, to accurately model the distribution of spatially varying reflectance as described by text prompts. Initially, we employ a pre-trained stable diffusion 2 model to generate a latent representation that informs the overall shape of the material and serves as our backbone model. Then, our ReflectanceUNet enables fine-tuning control over the material's physical appearance and generates SVBRDF maps. ReflectanceUNet module is trained on an extensive dataset comprising approximately 200,000 synthetic spatially varying materials. Our generative SVBRDF diffusion model allows for the synthesis of multiple SVBRDF estimates from a single textual input, offering users the possibility to choose the output that best aligns with their requirements. We illustrate our method's versatility by generating SVBRDF maps from a range of textual descriptions, both specific and broad. Our ReflectanceUNet model can integrate optional physical parameters, such as roughness and specularity, enhancing customization. When the backbone module is fixed, the ReflectanceUNet module refines the material, allowing direct edits to its physical attributes. Comparative evaluations demonstrate that ReflectanceFusion achieves better accuracy than existing text-to-material models, such as Text2Mat, while also providing the benefits of editable and relightable SVBRDF maps.

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) aims to expand existing transportation networks in metropolitan areas by offering short flights either to transport passengers or cargo. Electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft powered by lithium-ion battery packs are considered promising for such applications. Efficient mission planning is cru-cial, maximizing the number of flights per battery charge while ensuring completion even under unforeseen events. As batteries degrade, precise mission planning becomes challenging due to uncertainties in the end-of-discharge prediction. This often leads to adding safety margins, reducing the number or duration of po-tential flights on one battery charge. While predicting the end of discharge can support decision-making, it remains insufficient in case of unforeseen events, such as adverse weather conditions. This necessitates health-aware real-time control to address any unexpected events and extend the time until the end of charge while taking the current degradation state into account. This paper addresses the joint problem of mission planning and health-aware real-time control of opera-tional parameters to prescriptively control the duration of one discharge cycle of the battery pack. We pro-pose an algorithm that proactively prescribes operational parameters to extend the discharge cycle based on the battery's current health status while optimizing the mission. The proposed deep reinforcement learn-ing algorithm facilitates operational parameter optimization and path planning while accounting for the degradation state, even in the presence of uncertainties. Evaluation of simulated flights of a NASA concep-tual multirotor aircraft model, collected from Hardware-in-the-loop experiments, demonstrates the algo-rithm's near-optimal performance across various operational scenarios, allowing adaptation to changed en-vironmental conditions.

Rendering realistic cloth has always been a challenge due to its intricate structure. Cloth is made up of fibers, plies, and yarns, and previous curved-based models, while detailed, were computationally expensive and inflexible for large cloth. To address this, we propose a simplified approach. We introduce a geometric aggregation technique that reduces ray-tracing computation by using fewer curves, focusing only on yarn curves. Our model generates ply and fiber shapes implicitly, compensating for the lack of explicit geometry with a novel shadowing component. We also present a shading model that simplifies light interactions among fibers by categorizing them into four components, accurately capturing specular and scattered light in both forward and backward directions. To render large cloth efficiently, we propose a multi-scale solution based on pixel coverage. Our yarn shading model outperforms previous methods, achieving rendering speeds 3-5 times faster with less memory in near-field views. Additionally, our multi-scale solution offers a 20% speed boost for distant cloth observation.

In prior methods, it was observed that the application of Convolutional Neural Networks agent in Deep Reinforcement Learning to financial data resulted in an enhanced reward. In this study, a specific permutation was applied to the feature vector, thereby generating a CNN matrix that strategically positions more pertinent features in close proximity. The published MLP-based DRL in finance has difficulties in learning the dynamics of the environment when the action scale increases. If the buying and selling increase to one thousand shares, the MLP agent will not be able to effectively adapt to the environment. To address this, we designed a CNN agent that concatenates the data from the last ninety days of the daily feature vector to create the CNN input matrix. The realistic rendering of woven and knitted fabrics has posed significant challenges throughout many years. Previously, fiber-based micro-appearance models have achieved considerable success in attaining high levels of realism. However, rendering such models remains complex due to the intricate internal scatterings of hundreds of fibers within a yarn, requiring vast amounts of memory and time to render. In this paper, we introduce a new framework to capture aggregated appearance by tracing many light paths through the underlying fiber geometry. We then employ lightweight neural networks to accurately model the aggregated BSDF, which allows for the precise modeling of a diverse array of materials while offering substantial improvements in speed and reductions in memory. Furthermore, we introduce a novel importance sampling scheme to further speed up the rate of convergence. The relatively low thermal conductivity of biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) has limited its applications in various fields. To address this issue, the incorporation of nanofillers, such as boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), has emerged as an effective method to enhance PLA's thermal properties. However, the thermal conduction of polymer-based nanocomposites is strongly influenced by interfacial thermal resistance. In this study, we investigate the impact of pristine and surface-treated BNNSs on the thermal behavior of PLA using molecular dynamics simulations. To enhance interfacial interactions and reduce chain mobility during heat transfer, we chemically modify the surface of BNNSs by introducing three different functional groups (NH2, OH, and COOH) with varying polarities. Our findings suggest that oxygen-containing groups, namely OH and COOH, exhibit stronger interfacial interactions compared to the other cases. We also systematically apply different percentages of these functional groups (i.e., 2.5, 5, and 7.5) and observe that a higher number of functional groups leads to a greater improvement in interfacial thermal transport, attributed to the enhanced phonon coupling effect. To complete the discussion, we thoroughly study the influence of random and agglomerated patterns of functional groups distribution.

Optical photon propagation is an embarrassingly parallel operation, well suited to acceleration on GPU devices. Rendering of images employs similar techniques -- for this reason, a pipeline to offload optical photon propagation from Geant4 to the industry-standard open-source renderer Mitsuba3 has been devised. With the creation of a dedicated plugin for single point multi-source emission, we find a photon propagation rate of $2\times10^{5}$ photons per second per CPU thread using LLVM and $1.2\times10^{6}$ photons per second per GPU using CUDA. This represents a speed-up of 70 on CPU and 400 on GPU over Geant4 and is competitive with other similar applications. Neural reflectance models are capable of reproducing the spatially-varying appearance of many real-world materials at different scales. Unfortunately, existing techniques such as NeuMIP have difficulties handling materials with strong shadowing effects or detailed specular highlights. In this paper, we introduce a neural appearance model that offers a new level of accuracy. Central to our model is an inception-based core network structure that captures material appearances at multiple scales using parallel-operating kernels and ensures multi-stage features through specialized convolution layers. Furthermore, we encode the inputs into frequency space, introduce a gradient-based loss, and employ it adaptive to the progress of the learning phase. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using a variety of synthetic and real examples.

Understanding universal aspects of quantum dynamics is an unresolved problem in statistical mechanics. In particular, the spin dynamics of the 1D Heisenberg model were conjectured to belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class based on the scaling of the infinite-temperature spin-spin correlation function. In a chain of 46 superconducting qubits, we study the probability distribution, $P(\mathcal{M})$, of the magnetization transferred across the chain's center. The first two moments of $P(\mathcal{M})$ show superdiffusive behavior, a hallmark of KPZ universality. However, the third and fourth moments rule out the KPZ conjecture and allow for evaluating other theories. Our results highlight the importance of studying higher moments in determining dynamic universality classes and provide key insights into universal behavior in quantum systems.

Engineered dissipative reservoirs have the potential to steer many-body quantum systems toward correlated steady states useful for quantum simulation of high-temperature superconductivity or quantum magnetism. Using up to 49 superconducting qubits, we prepared low-energy states of the transverse-field Ising model through coupling to dissipative auxiliary qubits. In one dimension, we observed long-range quantum correlations and a ground-state fidelity of 0.86 for 18 qubits at the critical point. In two dimensions, we found mutual information that extends beyond nearest neighbors. Lastly, by coupling the system to auxiliaries emulating reservoirs with different chemical potentials, we explored transport in the quantum Heisenberg model. Our results establish engineered dissipation as a scalable alternative to unitary evolution for preparing entangled many-body states on noisy quantum processors.

Undesired coupling to the surrounding environment destroys long-range correlations on quantum processors and hinders the coherent evolution in the nominally available computational space. This incoherent noise is an outstanding challenge to fully leverage the computation power of near-term quantum processors. It has been shown that benchmarking Random Circuit Sampling (RCS) with Cross-Entropy Benchmarking (XEB) can provide a reliable estimate of the effective size of the Hilbert space coherently available. The extent to which the presence of noise can trivialize the outputs of a given quantum algorithm, i.e. making it spoofable by a classical computation, is an unanswered question. Here, by implementing an RCS algorithm we demonstrate experimentally that there are two phase transitions observable with XEB, which we explain theoretically with a statistical model. The first is a dynamical transition as a function of the number of cycles and is the continuation of the anti-concentration point in the noiseless case. The second is a quantum phase transition controlled by the error per cycle; to identify it analytically and experimentally, we create a weak link model which allows varying the strength of noise versus coherent evolution. Furthermore, by presenting an RCS experiment with 67 qubits at 32 cycles, we demonstrate that the computational cost of our experiment is beyond the capabilities of existing classical supercomputers, even when accounting for the inevitable presence of noise. Our experimental and theoretical work establishes the existence of transitions to a stable computationally complex phase that is reachable with current quantum processors.

We propose an incentive mechanism for the sponsored content provider market in which the communication of users can be represented by a graph and the private information of the users is assumed to have a continuous distribution function. The content provider stipulates incentive rewards to encourage users to reveal their private information truthfully and increase their content demand, which leads to an increase in advertising revenue. We prove that all users gain a non-negative utility and disclose their private information truthfully. Moreover, we study the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed mechanism in a case study with different network structures.

Measurement has a special role in quantum theory: by collapsing the wavefunction it can enable phenomena such as teleportation and thereby alter the "arrow of time" that constrains unitary evolution. When integrated in many-body dynamics, measurements can lead to emergent patterns of quantum information in space-time that go beyond established paradigms for characterizing phases, either in or out of equilibrium. On present-day NISQ processors, the experimental realization of this physics is challenging due to noise, hardware limitations, and the stochastic nature of quantum measurement. Here we address each of these experimental challenges and investigate measurement-induced quantum information phases on up to 70 superconducting qubits. By leveraging the interchangeability of space and time, we use a duality mapping, to avoid mid-circuit measurement and access different manifestations of the underlying phases -- from entanglement scaling to measurement-induced teleportation -- in a unified way. We obtain finite-size signatures of a phase transition with a decoding protocol that correlates the experimental measurement record with classical simulation data. The phases display sharply different sensitivity to noise, which we exploit to turn an inherent hardware limitation into a useful diagnostic. Our work demonstrates an approach to realize measurement-induced physics at scales that are at the limits of current NISQ processors.

Task allocation is a crucial process in modern systems, but it is often challenged by incomplete information about the utilities of participating agents. In this paper, we propose a new profit maximization mechanism for the task allocation problem, where the task publisher seeks an optimal incentive function to maximize its own profit and simultaneously ensure the truthful announcing of the agent's private information (type) and its participation in the task, while an autonomous agent aims at maximizing its own utility function by deciding on its participation level and announced type. Our mechanism stands out from the classical contract theory-based truthful mechanisms as it empowers agents to make their own decisions about their level of involvement, making it more practical for many real-world task allocation scenarios. It has been proven that by considering a linear form of incentive function consisting of two decision functions for the task publisher the mechanism's goals are met. The proposed truthful mechanism is initially modeled as a non-convex functional optimization with the double continuum of constraints, nevertheless, we demonstrate that by deriving an equivalent form of the incentive constraints, it can be reformulated as a tractable convex optimal control problem. Further, we propose a numerical algorithm to obtain the solution.

Virtual Reality headsets enable users to explore the environment by performing self-induced movements. The retinal velocity produced by such motion reduces the visual system's ability to resolve fine detail. We measured the impact of self-induced head rotations on the ability to detect quality changes of a realistic 3D model in an immersive virtual reality environment. We varied the Level-of-Detail (LOD) as a function of rotational head velocity with different degrees of severity. Using a psychophysical method, we asked 17 participants to identify which of the two presented intervals contained the higher quality model under two different maximum velocity conditions. After fitting psychometric functions to data relating the percentage of correct responses to the aggressiveness of LOD manipulations, we identified the threshold severity for which participants could reliably (75\%) detect the lower LOD model. Participants accepted an approximately four-fold LOD reduction even in the low maximum velocity condition without a significant impact on perceived quality, which suggests that there is considerable potential for optimisation when users are moving (increased range of perceptual uncertainty). Moreover, LOD could be degraded significantly more in the maximum head velocity condition, suggesting these effects are indeed speed dependent.

Differentiable rasterization changes the standard formulation of primitive rasterization -- by enabling gradient flow from a pixel to its underlying triangles -- using distribution functions in different stages of rendering, creating a "soft" version of the original rasterizer. However, choosing the optimal softening function that ensures the best performance and convergence to a desired goal requires trial and error. Previous work has analyzed and compared several combinations of softening. In this work, we take it a step further and, instead of making a combinatorial choice of softening operations, parameterize the continuous space of common softening operations. Leakage of quantum information out of computational states into higher energy states represents a major challenge in the pursuit of quantum error correction (QEC). In a QEC circuit, leakage builds over time and spreads through multi-qubit interactions. This leads to correlated errors that degrade the exponential suppression of logical error with scale, challenging the feasibility of QEC as a path towards fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, we demonstrate the execution of a distance-3 surface code and distance-21 bit-flip code on a Sycamore quantum processor where leakage is removed from all qubits in each cycle. This shortens the lifetime of leakage and curtails its ability to spread and induce correlated errors. We report a ten-fold reduction in steady-state leakage population on the data qubits encoding the logical state and an average leakage population of less than $1 \times 10^{-3}$ throughout the entire device. The leakage removal process itself efficiently returns leakage population back to the computational basis, and adding it to a code circuit prevents leakage from inducing correlated error across cycles, restoring a fundamental assumption of QEC. An important measure of the development of quantum computing platforms has been the simulation of increasingly complex physical systems. Prior to fault-tolerant quantum computing, robust error mitigation strategies are necessary to continue this growth. Here, we study physical simulation within the seniority-zero electron pairing subspace, which affords both a computational stepping stone to a fully correlated model, and an opportunity to validate recently introduced ``purification-based'' error-mitigation strategies. We compare the performance of error mitigation based on doubling quantum resources in time (echo verification) or in space (virtual distillation), on up to $20$ qubits of a superconducting qubit quantum processor. We observe a reduction of error by one to two orders of magnitude below less sophisticated techniques (e.g. post-selection); the gain from error mitigation is seen to increase with the system size. Employing these error mitigation strategies enables the implementation of the largest variational algorithm for a correlated chemistry system to-date. Extrapolating performance from these results allows us to estimate minimum requirements for a beyond-classical simulation of electronic structure. Indistinguishability of particles is a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics. For all elementary and quasiparticles observed to date - including fermions, bosons, and Abelian anyons - this principle guarantees that the braiding of identical particles leaves the system unchanged. However, in two spatial dimensions, an intriguing possibility exists: braiding of non-Abelian anyons causes rotations in a space of topologically degenerate wavefunctions. Hence, it can change the observables of the system without violating the principle of indistinguishability. Despite the well developed mathematical description of non-Abelian anyons and numerous theoretical proposals, the experimental observation of their exchange statistics has remained elusive for decades. Controllable many-body quantum states generated on quantum processors offer another path for exploring these fundamental phenomena. While efforts on conventional solid-state platforms typically involve Hamiltonian dynamics of quasi-particles, superconducting quantum processors allow for directly manipulating the many-body wavefunction via unitary gates. Building on predictions that stabilizer codes can host projective non-Abelian Ising anyons, we implement a generalized stabilizer code and unitary protocol to create and braid them. This allows us to experimentally verify the fusion rules of the anyons and braid them to realize their statistics. We then study the prospect of employing the anyons for quantum computation and utilize braiding to create an entangled state of anyons encoding three logical qubits. Our work provides new insights about non-Abelian braiding and - through the future inclusion of error correction to achieve topological protection - could open a path toward fault-tolerant quantum computing.

The topology of a robotic swarm affects the convergence speed of consensus and the mobility of the robots. In this paper, we prove the existence of a complete set of local topology manipulation operations that allow the transformation of a swarm topology. The set is complete in the sense that any other possible set of manipulation operations can be performed by a sequence of operations from our set. The operations are local as they depend only on the first and second hop neighbors' information to transform any initial spanning tree of the network's graph to any other connected tree with the same number of nodes. The flexibility provided by our method is similar to global methods that require full knowledge of the swarm network. We prove the existence of a sequence of transformations for any tree-to-tree transformation, and derive sequences of operations to form a line or star from any initial spanning tree. Our work provides a theoretical and practical framework for topological control of a swarm, establishing global properties using only local information.

We demonstrate a high dynamic range Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA) in which the active nonlinear element is implemented using an array of rf-SQUIDs. The device is matched to the 50 $\Omega$ environment with a Klopfenstein-taper impedance transformer and achieves a bandwidth of 250-300 MHz, with input saturation powers up to -95 dBm at 20 dB gain. A 54-qubit Sycamore processor was used to benchmark these devices, providing a calibration for readout power, an estimate of amplifier added noise, and a platform for comparison against standard impedance matched parametric amplifiers with a single dc-SQUID. We find that the high power rf-SQUID array design has no adverse effect on system noise, readout fidelity, or qubit dephasing, and we estimate an upper bound on amplifier added noise at 1.6 times the quantum limit. Lastly, amplifiers with this design show no degradation in readout fidelity due to gain compression, which can occur in multi-tone multiplexed readout with traditional JPAs., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Objective: To develop and validate an automated method for bedside monitoring of sleep state fluctuations in neonatal intensive care units. Methods: A deep learning -based algorithm was designed and trained using 53 EEG recordings from a long-term (a)EEG monitoring in 30 near-term neonates. The results were validated using an external dataset from 30 polysomnography recordings. In addition to training and validating a single EEG channel quiet sleep detector, we constructed Sleep State Trend (SST), a bedside-ready means for visualizing classifier outputs. Results: The accuracy of quiet sleep detection in the training data was 90%, and the accuracy was comparable (85-86%) in all bipolar derivations available from the 4-electrode recordings. The algorithm generalized well to an external dataset, showing 81% overall accuracy despite different signal derivations. SST allowed an intuitive, clear visualization of the classifier output. Conclusions: Fluctuations in sleep states can be detected at high fidelity from a single EEG channel, and the results can be visualized as a transparent and intuitive trend in the bedside monitors. Practical quantum computing will require error rates that are well below what is achievable with physical qubits. Quantum error correction offers a path to algorithmically-relevant error rates by encoding logical qubits within many physical qubits, where increasing the number of physical qubits enhances protection against physical errors. However, introducing more qubits also increases the number of error sources, so the density of errors must be sufficiently low in order for logical performance to improve with increasing code size. Here, we report the measurement of logical qubit performance scaling across multiple code sizes, and demonstrate that our system of superconducting qubits has sufficient performance to overcome the additional errors from increasing qubit number. We find our distance-5 surface code logical qubit modestly outperforms an ensemble of distance-3 logical qubits on average, both in terms of logical error probability over 25 cycles and logical error per cycle ($2.914\%\pm 0.016\%$ compared to $3.028\%\pm 0.023\%$). To investigate damaging, low-probability error sources, we run a distance-25 repetition code and observe a $1.7\times10^{-6}$ logical error per round floor set by a single high-energy event ($1.6\times10^{-7}$ when excluding this event). We are able to accurately model our experiment, and from this model we can extract error budgets that highlight the biggest challenges for future systems. Systems of correlated particles appear in many fields of science and represent some of the most intractable puzzles in nature. The computational challenge in these systems arises when interactions become comparable to other energy scales, which makes the state of each particle depend on all other particles. The lack of general solutions for the 3-body problem and acceptable theory for strongly correlated electrons shows that our understanding of correlated systems fades when the particle number or the interaction strength increases. One of the hallmarks of interacting systems is the formation of multi-particle bound states. In a ring of 24 superconducting qubits, we develop a high fidelity parameterizable fSim gate that we use to implement the periodic quantum circuit of the spin-1/2 XXZ model, an archetypal model of interaction. By placing microwave photons in adjacent qubit sites, we study the propagation of these excitations and observe their bound nature for up to 5 photons. We devise a phase sensitive method for constructing the few-body spectrum of the bound states and extract their pseudo-charge by introducing a synthetic flux. By introducing interactions between the ring and additional qubits, we observe an unexpected resilience of the bound states to integrability breaking. This finding goes against the common wisdom that bound states in non-integrable systems are unstable when their energies overlap with the continuum spectrum. Inherent symmetry of a quantum system may protect its otherwise fragile states. Leveraging such protection requires testing its robustness against uncontrolled environmental interactions. Using 47 superconducting qubits, we implement the one-dimensional kicked Ising model which exhibits non-local Majorana edge modes (MEMs) with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ parity symmetry. Remarkably, we find that any multi-qubit Pauli operator overlapping with the MEMs exhibits a uniform late-time decay rate comparable to single-qubit relaxation rates, irrespective of its size or composition. This characteristic allows us to accurately reconstruct the exponentially localized spatial profiles of the MEMs. Furthermore, the MEMs are found to be resilient against certain symmetry-breaking noise owing to a prethermalization mechanism. Our work elucidates the complex interplay between noise and symmetry-protected edge modes in a solid-state environment.

Building height retrieval from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is of great importance for urban applications, yet highly challenging owing to the complexity of SAR data. This paper addresses the issue of building height retrieval in large-scale urban areas from a single TerraSAR-X spotlight or stripmap image. Based on the radar viewing geometry, we propose that this problem can be formulated as a bounding box regression problem and therefore allows for integrating height data from multiple data sources in generating ground truth on a larger scale. We introduce building footprints from geographic information system (GIS) data as complementary information and propose a bounding box regression network that exploits the location relationship between a building's footprint and its bounding box, allowing for fast computation. This is important for large-scale applications. The method is validated on four urban data sets using TerraSAR-X images in both high-resolution spotlight and stripmap modes. Experimental results show that the proposed network can reduce the computation cost significantly while keeping the height accuracy of individual buildings compared to a Faster R-CNN based method. Moreover, we investigate the impact of inaccurate GIS data on our proposed network, and this study shows that the bounding box regression network is robust against positioning errors in GIS data. The proposed method has great potential to be applied to regional or even global scales.

Recent findings suggest that abnormal operating conditions of equipment in the oil and gas supply chain represent a large fraction of anthropogenic methane emissions. Thus, effective mitigation of emissions necessitates rapid identification and repair of sources caused by faulty equipment. In addition to advances in sensing technology that allow for more frequent surveillance, prompt and cost-effective identification of sources requires computational frameworks that provide automatic fault detection. Here, we present a changepoint detection algorithm based on a recursive Bayesian scheme that allows for simultaneous emission rate estimation and fault detection. The proposed algorithm is tested on a series of near-field controlled release mobile experiments, with promising results demonstrating successful detection (>90% success rate) of changes in the leak rate when the emission rate is tripled after an abrupt change. Moreover, we show that the statistics of the measurements, such as the coefficient of variation and range are good predictors of the performance of the algorithm. Finally, we describe how this methodology can be easily adapted to suit time-averaged concentration data measured by stationary sensors, thus showcasing its flexibility.

Quantum many-body systems display rich phase structure in their low-temperature equilibrium states. However, much of nature is not in thermal equilibrium. Remarkably, it was recently predicted that out-of-equilibrium systems can exhibit novel dynamical phases that may otherwise be forbidden by equilibrium thermodynamics, a paradigmatic example being the discrete time crystal (DTC). Concretely, dynamical phases can be defined in periodically driven many-body localized systems via the concept of eigenstate order. In eigenstate-ordered phases, the entire many-body spectrum exhibits quantum correlations and long-range order, with characteristic signatures in late-time dynamics from all initial states. It is, however, challenging to experimentally distinguish such stable phases from transient phenomena, wherein few select states can mask typical behavior. Here we implement a continuous family of tunable CPHASE gates on an array of superconducting qubits to experimentally observe an eigenstate-ordered DTC. We demonstrate the characteristic spatiotemporal response of a DTC for generic initial states. Our work employs a time-reversal protocol that discriminates external decoherence from intrinsic thermalization, and leverages quantum typicality to circumvent the exponential cost of densely sampling the eigenspectrum. In addition, we locate the phase transition out of the DTC with an experimental finite-size analysis. These results establish a scalable approach to study non-equilibrium phases of matter on current quantum processors.

Modeling the geometry and the appearance of knitted fabrics has been challenging due to their complex geometries and interactions with light. Previous surface-based models have difficulties capturing fine-grained knit geometries; Micro-appearance models, on the other hands, typically store individual cloth fibers explicitly and are expensive to be generated and rendered. Further, neither of the models have been matched the photographs to capture both the reflection and the transmission of light simultaneously. In this paper, we introduce an efficient technique to generate knit models with user-specified knitting patterns. Our model stores individual knit plies with fiber-level detailed depicted using normal and tangent mapping. We evaluate our generated models using a wide array of knitting patterns. Further, we compare qualitatively renderings to our models to photos of real samples.

Scalable quantum computing can become a reality with error correction, provided coherent qubits can be constructed in large arrays. The key premise is that physical errors can remain both small and sufficiently uncorrelated as devices scale, so that logical error rates can be exponentially suppressed. However, energetic impacts from cosmic rays and latent radioactivity violate both of these assumptions. An impinging particle ionizes the substrate, radiating high energy phonons that induce a burst of quasiparticles, destroying qubit coherence throughout the device. High-energy radiation has been identified as a source of error in pilot superconducting quantum devices, but lacking a measurement technique able to resolve a single event in detail, the effect on large scale algorithms and error correction in particular remains an open question. Elucidating the physics involved requires operating large numbers of qubits at the same rapid timescales as in error correction, exposing the event's evolution in time and spread in space. Here, we directly observe high-energy rays impacting a large-scale quantum processor. We introduce a rapid space and time-multiplexed measurement method and identify large bursts of quasiparticles that simultaneously and severely limit the energy coherence of all qubits, causing chip-wide failure. We track the events from their initial localised impact to high error rates across the chip. Our results provide direct insights into the scale and dynamics of these damaging error bursts in large-scale devices, and highlight the necessity of mitigation to enable quantum computing to scale.

The discovery of topological order has revolutionized the understanding of quantum matter in modern physics and provided the theoretical foundation for many quantum error correcting codes. Realizing topologically ordered states has proven to be extremely challenging in both condensed matter and synthetic quantum systems. Here, we prepare the ground state of the toric code Hamiltonian using an efficient quantum circuit on a superconducting quantum processor. We measure a topological entanglement entropy near the expected value of $\ln2$, and simulate anyon interferometry to extract the braiding statistics of the emergent excitations. Furthermore, we investigate key aspects of the surface code, including logical state injection and the decay of the non-local order parameter. Deep learning in remote sensing has become an international hype, but it is mostly limited to the evaluation of optical data. Although deep learning has been introduced in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data processing, despite successful first attempts, its huge potential remains locked. In this paper, we provide an introduction to the most relevant deep learning models and concepts, point out possible pitfalls by analyzing special characteristics of SAR data, review the state-of-the-art of deep learning applied to SAR in depth, summarize available benchmarks, and recommend some important future research directions. In the current study, mechanical characteristics of graphene oxide (GO) as a promising substitute of graphene are systematically studied through molecular dynamics simulation. For this purpose, several GO samples having different concentrations of epoxide and hydroxyl functional groups are considered. The results reveal that increasing the epoxide coverage causes a noticeable deterioration in the mechanical characteristics of GO systems. This change is correlated with the increase of the formation of ripples in the structure upon increasing the epoxide coverage. Moreover, investigating the bond lengths in the system, it is concluded that the higher epoxide percentage leads to an increase in the length of single and hybrid resonance bonds leading to an overall deterioration of the mechanical properties of GO samples. Additionally, our results demonstrate that high concentration of functional groups can lead to a negative Poisson ratio. Increasing the amount of hydroxyl groups shows the same declining effect on the Young modulus. In a graphene system containing both epoxide and hydroxyl groups, it is deduced that a higher percentage of the former can result in a higher residual strain because of the formation of more ripples within the system.

We delineate the four principal surface plasmon polariton coupling and interaction mechanisms in subwavelength gratings, and demonstrate their significant roles in shaping the optical response of plasmonic gratings. Within the framework of width-graded metal-insulator-metal nano-gratings, mode confinement and wave guiding result in multiwavelength light localization provided conditions of adiabatic mode transformation are satisfied. The field is enhanced further through fine tuning of the groove-width (w), groove-depth (L) and groove-to-groove-separation (d). By juxtaposing the resonance modes of width-graded and non-graded gratings and defining the adiabaticity condition, we demonstrate the criticality of w and d in achieving adiabatic mode transformation among the grooves. We observe that the resonant wavelength of a graded grating corresponds to the properties of a single groove when the grooves are adiabatically coupled. We show that L plays an important function in defining the span of localized wavelengths. We show that multiwavelength resonant modes with intensity enhancement exceeding 3 orders of magnitude are possible with w < 30nm and 300nm < d < 900nm for a range of fixed values of L. This paper deals with a new robust fault detection (FD) scheme for nonlinear Lipschitz systems wherein a robust nonlinear observer is used in combination with the Bond Graph (BG) method. In order to improve the efficiency of the classical Analytical Redundancy Relations (ARRs) FD scheme based on the BG method, a new form of the ARRs for the nonlinear Lipschitz systems is presented. This new form of the residuals is based on the output estimation error of the observer and is called Error-based Analytical Redundancy Relations (EARRs). The robustness against disturbances and parametric uncertainties in the FD system is achieved by the proposed method. Next, the integral form of the EARRs for the nonlinear Lipschitz system is presented that is robust in the sense of measurement noises as well. The BG model of a single link manipulator with revolute joints actuated by a DC motor is derived and the efficiency of the proposed method in comparison to the classical ARR method is shown in the simulation results., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

In this paper, the optimal operation of a microgrid is investigated when the network is connected at a 24-hour interval for a specific day. For the optimal operation, some criteria, such as the simultaneous reduction in operation costs, losses, and voltage deviations, as well as the increase in reliability are taken into consideration. Given the capacity of the installed units, a part of the load of the demanded energy is always supplied by the grid. In line with the objectives set, planning for the charge and discharge of storage systems as well as the interaction among distributed power generators are investigated. The operation process is considered as an optimization problem, and the created problem is solved by the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithm. In addition, by implementing the Demand Response (DR) program in the optimal operation, the acquired results are compared with those obtained when this strategy is not employed. Simulation results indicate that the utilization of the Demand Response (DR) program in the optimal operation of the microgrid leads to a number of improvements. To elucidate it more, in addition to the decrease in the operation costs of the microgrid, the voltage deviation indices, reliability, and losses are improved contrary to non-DR schemes.

Obtaining knowledge and skill achievement through peer learning can lead to higher academic achievement. However, peer learning implementation is not just about putting students together and hoping for the best. At its worst-designed, peer learning may result in one person doing all the effort for instance, or may fail to encourage the students to interact enough with the task and so enhance the task in hand. This study proposes a mechanism as well as an instructional design to foster well-organized peer learning based on game theory $(PD\_PL)$. The proposed mechanism uses prisoner's dilemma and maps the strategy and payoff concepts found in prisoner's dilemma onto a peer learning atmosphere. PD\_PL was implemented during several sessions of four university courses and with 142 computer engineering students. %The results of the pre-test and post-test exams of all the sessions were compared with R software through Paired Hotelling's T-Square analysis in order to investigate the impacts of $PD\_PL$ and the proposed instructional design on students' personal learning. The study results indicated that PD\_PL was beneficial and favourable to the students.
