The 23rd EUROCALL conference was held in Cyprus from the 24th to the 27th of August 2016. The theme of the conference this year was "CALL Communities and Culture." It offered a unique opportunity to hear from real-world CALL practitioners on how they practice CALL in their communities, and how the CALL culture has developed in local and global contexts. We are developing a Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) system for learners of Icelandic as a second and foreign language (L2). Based on pre-designed tasks in pronunciation exercises, this system will provide corrective feedback on learners' speech. One of the main features we are implementing is a new method for automatic pronunciation scoring to provide immediate feedback on learners' errors. We report promising results for a pilot study of this method in Norwegian, where the pronunciation score successfully distinguishes between native speakers and adult learners, and we discuss how this method informs our continued development of Icelandic CAPT. This article presents results from a human-centred approach study to designing a mobile app TALAÐU!, which aims at assisting learners of Icelandic as a second language (L2) with spoken language practice. The main goal of the app would be to encourage learners to have real-life conversations with Icelandic speakers by accomplishing conversational missions. In the first stage of development, a qualitative deep-method needs study in the form of interviews was conducted with 19 migrants from 14 different countries, who permanently live in Iceland. Results indicated that learners have five core needs for practising spoken language: connection, confidence, clarity, growth, and convenience. Based on different learning styles and confidence in speaking rather than language ability, three main learner profiles were indicated: 'diving in', 'learning with caution' and 'dipping a toe'. Both the learners' needs and the profiles would drive the design of the learning app to personalise and maximise the learner experience with practising spoken L2. This human-centred study approach suggests an innovative strategy in designing a learning app for practising L2 in a specific language and culture environment. This article presents two studies performed on 14 immigrant families with children aged one to 16; 12 families in Iceland and two Icelandic families living abroad. Lack of exposure and availability of online materials for learning Icelandic as an L2 may affect what skills children can practise at home. This study represents 32 children aged one to 16, all of whom practise Icelandic (L2) at home. Data regarding use and availability of online and offline learning materials were collected by means of a survey containing both open-ended and closed questions. A comprehensive, central directory of available materials was created in parallel as a desktop research. These studies reveal that Icelandic is spoken in most homes but children require further development of specific language skills, predominantly reading. Families consider reading, writing, and vocabulary to be the most important skills to practise, while grammar, speaking, and listening take lower priority. Children's books are the most frequently used learning material, while textbooks, audiobooks, and other language programmes or apps are used less frequently. TV, films, and online channels (e.g. YouTube) are used to provide language exposure. Learning and Reading Assistant (LARA) is an open source platform that enables conversion of plain texts into an interactive multimedia form designed to support second- and foreign-language (L2) learners. In this workshop, we illustrate the open source aspects using collaborative work carried out during a six-week summer project at the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. Three undergraduate level students extended the platform in different directions in cooperation with other members of the international LARA team. The three subprojects were respectively concerned with adding automatically generated flashcards, adding multimedia versions of poetic texts in the archaic language Old Norse, and extending LARA to allow the inclusion of sign language content in Icelandic sign language -- Íslenskt TáknMál (ÍTM). We describe how the open-source Learning and Reading Assistant (LARA) platform was used to convert a classic Old Norse text, the "Völuspá," into an interactive online form. The LARA version includes high-quality recorded audio, translations, notes on key words and phrases, an automatically generated concordance, and links to other online resources. The interactive text was created in two different editions, one with Modern Icelandic translations designed to support Icelandic school students who read the poem as a set text, and one with English translations designed for English readers with basic Old Norse who wish to able to appreciate the poem in the original as a piece of literature. This paper describes how beginners of Icelandic as a foreign and second language responded to playing the first scene in Virtual Reykjavik, a video game-like environment where learners interact with virtual characters--Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs). This game enables learners to practice speaking and listening skills, to learn about the language and culture by solving various tasks. A mixed-method pilot study examined how six learners responded. The results were divided into how learners perceived (1) playing the game in general; (2) interaction with virtual characters; (3) multimodal behaviour of the virtual characters, in particular the speech, facial expressions, hand gestures and body movements; and (4) what the game helped them learn. In conclusion, some learners reported they learned to start speaking in Icelandic and that the spoken behaviour of virtual characters resembled real Icelanders. The rapid growth of online education courses, especially Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), has called attention to the issue of student retention and low overall completion rates (Gaebel, 2013). The impact of different modes of delivery on retention has also received attention with a blended learning mode being deemed most effective in retaining students (Harker & Koutsantoni, 2005). Fischer (2007) underscores the need for computer-based tracking data to expose students' progress online. The study presented here is part of a larger study on student retention in online language learning courses and draws on tracking data from over 43,000 learners on "Icelandic Online" (IOL), an open online course in Icelandic as a second language. Previous findings reveal that completion rates on IOL are low and vary by mode of delivery, revealing regular attrition patterns across all modes of delivery. This paper demonstrates the importance of re-examining parameters for measuring retention and to correlate student retention to views on course content and platform. Many scholars call for more diverse data on learners' behaviour in CALL (Colpaert, 2012; Fischer, 2007, 2012; Stockwell, 2012). Student retention and the inconclusive efficacy of online language courses (Gaebel, 2013) has received increased attention with the proliferation of MOOCs (Koller, Ng, Do & Chen, 2013). In this paper we introduce initial findings of tracking data over an eight year period on forty-three thousand learners' progression through the seven courses of "Icelandic Online," an open, guided online course in Icelandic as a second/foreign language. Preliminary findings indicate low course completion rates, from 2.4% to 18.2%, that vary across courses and seem to cluster around certain junctures in the course content. Results show that retention varies according to mode of delivery (Harker & Koutsantoni, 2005), with the blended learning mode (self-directed learning on campus with a tutor) as most effective in retaining students, followed by the distance learning mode (self-directed learning outside campus with a tutor). Retention is lowest among self-directed students learning outside the context of formal education. These findings raise questions about factors that motivate retention in online courses, which appear to be not only the modes of delivery but also the course content. Gaining insight into course choices holds significant value for universities, especially those who aim for flexibility in their programs and wish to adapt quickly to changing demands of the job market. However, little emphasis has been put on utilizing the large amount of educational data to understand these course choices. Here, we use network analysis of the course selection of all students who enrolled in an undergraduate program in engineering, business or computer science at a Nordic university over a five year period. With these methods, we have explored student choices to identify their distinct fields of interest. This was done by applying community detection (CD) to a network of courses, where two courses were connected if a student had taken both. We compared our CD results to actual major specializations within the computer science department and found strong similarities. Analysis with our proposed methodology can be used to offer more tailored education, which in turn allows students to follow their interests and adapt to the ever-changing career market. Environmental education (EE) is now clearly specified in educational standards in many parts of the world, and at the same time the view of language learning is moving towards a content and language integrated learning (CLIL) strategy, to make English lessons more relevant and attractive for students (Eurydice, 2006). In this respect, environmental and English instruction can be merged to benefit both purposes and to offer learning experiences that go beyond the school walls. Einztein, the social learning network for the education community, collaborates with the environmental project Inquiry-to-Insight (http://i2i.stanford.edu/) inviting high school students around the world to participate in the International Student Carbon Footprint Challenge (ISCFC), challenging students to learn about the environmental impact of their lifestyle choices on their carbon footprints. In the ISCFC, students use an online carbon footprint calculator to measure the amount of CO2 (carbon dioxide) released by their everyday choices (food, transportation, etc). Teachers then share student data with other classrooms around the globe and use Einztein to engage students in several environmental discussions online using English as the lingua franca. Students use Einztein to reflect upon their own carbon footprint, envision global and local solutions and share knowledge about environmental issues. For this study we focused on a specific discussion and investigated the discourse structure of students from six different countries (USA, Croatia, Switzerland, Iceland, Greece and Bulgaria) reflecting upon their very own CO2 emissions. Preliminary results indicate that the students' presumptions about their own impact are crucial and whether they are English natives or not is not as important when it comes to developing an understanding of their own responsibilities regarding carbon footprint. Thus, in relation to a motivating content, the students' English is productive and sufficient enough for communication and collaboration. [For the complete volume, see ED574893.]
