Air lasing provides a promising technique to remotely produce coherent radiation in the atmosphere and attracts continuous attention. However, the polarization properties of N2+ lasing with seeding has not been understood since it was discovered ten years ago, in which the behaviors appear disordered and confusing. Here, we performed an experimental and theoretical investigation on the polarization properties of N2+ lasing and successfully revealed its underlying physical mechanism. We found that the optical gain is anisotropic owing to the permanent alignment of N2+ induced by the preferential ionization of the pump light. As a result, the polarization of N2+ lasing tends to align with that of the pump light after amplification, which becomes more pronounced with increasing amplification factor. Based on the permanent alignment of N2+, we built a theoretical model that analytically interpreted and numerically reproduced the experimental observations, which points out the key factors for controlling the polarization of N2+ lasing., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Traffic object detection under variable illumination is challenging due to the information loss caused by the limited dynamic range of conventional frame-based cameras. To address this issue, we introduce bio-inspired event cameras and propose a novel Structure-aware Fusion Network (SFNet) that extracts sharp and complete object structures from the event stream to compensate for the lost information in images through cross-modality fusion, enabling the network to obtain illumination-robust representations for traffic object detection. Specifically, to mitigate the sparsity or blurriness issues arising from diverse motion states of traffic objects in fixed-interval event sampling methods, we propose the Reliable Structure Generation Network (RSGNet) to generate Speed Invariant Frames (SIF), ensuring the integrity and sharpness of object structures. Next, we design a novel Adaptive Feature Complement Module (AFCM) which guides the adaptive fusion of two modality features to compensate for the information loss in the images by perceiving the global lightness distribution of the images, thereby generating illumination-robust representations. Finally, considering the lack of large-scale and high-quality annotations in the existing event-based object detection datasets, we build a DSEC-Det dataset, which consists of 53 sequences with 63,931 images and more than 208,000 labels for 8 classes. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our proposed SFNet can overcome the perceptual boundaries of conventional cameras and outperform the frame-based method by 8.0% in mAP50 and 5.9% in mAP50:95. Recently, the real topology has been attracting widespread interest in two dimensions (2D). Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we reveal the monolayer Cr$_2$Se$_2$O (ML-CrSeO) as the first material example of a 2D antiferromagnetic (AFM) real Chern insulator (RCI) with topologically protected corner states. Unlike previous RCIs, we find that the real topology of the ML-CrSeO is rooted in one certain mirror subsystem of the two spin channels, and can not be directly obtained from all the valence bands in each spin channel as commonly believed. In particular, due to antiferromagnetism, the corner modes in ML-CrSeO exhibit strong corner-contrasted spin polarization, leading to spin-corner coupling (SCC). This SCC enables a direct connection between spin space and real space. Consequently, large and switchable net magnetization can be induced in the ML-CrSeO nanodisk by electrostatic means, such as potential step and in-plane electric field, and the corresponding magnetoelectric responses behave like a sign function, distinguished from that of the conventional multiferroic materials. Our work considerably broadens the candidate range of RCI materials, and opens up a new direction for topo-spintronics and 2D AFM materials research.

This paper aims to investigate the open research problem of uncovering the social behaviors of LLM-based agents. To achieve this goal, we adopt Avalon, a representative communication game, as the environment and use system prompts to guide LLM agents to play the game. While previous studies have conducted preliminary investigations into gameplay with LLM agents, there lacks research on their social behaviors. In this paper, we present a novel framework designed to seamlessly adapt to Avalon gameplay. The core of our proposed framework is a multi-agent system that enables efficient communication and interaction among agents. We evaluate the performance of our framework based on metrics from two perspectives: winning the game and analyzing the social behaviors of LLM agents. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework in generating adaptive and intelligent agents and highlight the potential of LLM-based agents in addressing the challenges associated with dynamic social environment interaction. By analyzing the social behaviors of LLM agents from the aspects of both collaboration and confrontation, we provide insights into the research and applications of this domain. In this paper, by analyzing mock images from the IllustrisTNG100-1 simulation, we examine the properties of the diffuse light and compare them to those of central and satellite galaxies. Our findings suggest that the majority of the diffuse light originates from satellites. This claim is supported by the similarity between the age and metallicity distributions of the diffuse light and those of the satellites. Notably, the color distribution of the diffuse light gradually evolves to resemble that of the centrals at lower redshifts, suggesting a coevolution or passive process. The radial profiles of the diffuse light reveal distinct trends, with the inner regions displaying a relatively flat distribution and the outer regions showing a descending pattern. This finding suggests that the formation of the diffuse light is influenced by both major mergers and stellar tidal stripping. Moreover, strong correlations are found between the stellar mass of the diffuse light and the overall stellar mass of the satellites, as well as between the stellar mass of the diffuse light and the number of satellites within groups or clusters. These relationships can be described by power-law and logarithmic functions. Overall, the diffuse light components predominantly originate from satellites with intermediate ages and metallicities. These satellites typically fall within the stellar mass range of $\rm 8<\log_{10}M_{star}/M_{\odot}< 10$ and the color range of $\rm -1<[g-r]^{0.1}< 0$. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are widely used for computer vision tasks. However, it has been shown that deep models are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, i.e., their performances drop when imperceptible perturbations are made to the original inputs, which may further degrade the following visual tasks or introduce new problems such as data and privacy security. Hence, metrics for evaluating the robustness of deep models against adversarial attacks are desired. However, previous metrics are mainly proposed for evaluating the adversarial robustness of shallow networks on the small-scale datasets. Although the Cross Lipschitz Extreme Value for nEtwork Robustness (CLEVER) metric has been proposed for large-scale datasets (e.g., the ImageNet dataset), it is computationally expensive and its performance relies on a tractable number of samples. In this paper, we propose the Adversarial Converging Time Score (ACTS), an attack-dependent metric that quantifies the adversarial robustness of a DNN on a specific input. Our key observation is that local neighborhoods on a DNN's output surface would have different shapes given different inputs. Hence, given different inputs, it requires different time for converging to an adversarial sample. Based on this geometry meaning, ACTS measures the converging time as an adversarial robustness metric. We validate the effectiveness and generalization of the proposed ACTS metric against different adversarial attacks on the large-scale ImageNet dataset using state-of-the-art deep networks. Video anomaly detection is to determine whether there are any abnormal events, behaviors or objects in a given video, which enables effective and intelligent public safety management. As video anomaly labeling is both time-consuming and expensive, most existing works employ unsupervised or weakly supervised learning methods. This paper focuses on weakly supervised video anomaly detection, in which the training videos are labeled whether or not they contain any anomalies, but there is no information about which frames the anomalies are located. However, the uncertainty of weakly labeled data and the large model size prevent existing methods from wide deployment in real scenarios, especially the resource-limit situations such as edge-computing. In this paper, we develop a lightweight video anomaly detection model. On the one hand, we propose an adaptive instance selection strategy, which is based on the model's current status to select confident instances, thereby mitigating the uncertainty of weakly labeled data and subsequently promoting the model's performance. On the other hand, we design a lightweight multi-level temporal correlation attention module and an hourglass-shaped fully connected layer to construct the model, which can reduce the model parameters to only 0.56\% of the existing methods (e.g. RTFM). Our extensive experiments on two public datasets UCF-Crime and ShanghaiTech show that our model can achieve comparable or even superior AUC score compared to the state-of-the-art methods, with a significantly reduced number of model parameters.

Autonomous obstacle avoidance is of vital importance for an intelligent agent such as a mobile robot to navigate in its environment. Existing state-of-the-art methods train a spiking neural network (SNN) with deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to achieve energy-efficient and fast inference speed in complex/unknown scenes. These methods typically assume that the environment is static while the obstacles in real-world scenes are often dynamic. The movement of obstacles increases the complexity of the environment and poses a great challenge to the existing methods. In this work, we approach robust dynamic obstacle avoidance twofold. First, we introduce the neuromorphic vision sensor (i.e., event camera) to provide motion cues complementary to the traditional Laser depth data for handling dynamic obstacles. Second, we develop an DRL-based event-enhanced multimodal spiking actor network (EEM-SAN) that extracts information from motion events data via unsupervised representation learning and fuses Laser and event camera data with learnable thresholding. This paper develops a microsimulation model to simulate the distributional impact of price changes using Household Budget Survey data, income survey data and an Input Output Model. The primary purpose is to describe the model components. The secondary purpose is to demonstrate one component of the model by assessing the distributional and welfare impact of recent price changes in Pakistan. Over the period of November 2020 to November 2022, headline inflation 41.5 percent, with food and transportation prices increasing most. The analysis shows that despite large increases in energy prices, the importance of energy prices for the welfare losses due to inflation is limited because energy budget shares are small and inflation is relatively low. The overall distributional impact of recent price changes is mildly progressive, but household welfare is impacted significantly irrespective of households position along the income distribution. The biggest driver of welfare losses at the bottom of the income distribution was food price inflation, while inflation in other goods and services was the biggest driver at the top. To compensate households for increased living costs, transfers would need to be on average 40 percent of pre-inflation expenditure, assuming constant incomes. Behavioural responses to price changes have a negligible impact on the overall welfare cost to households.

Neural radiance fields with stochasticity have garnered significant interest by enabling the sampling of plausible radiance fields and quantifying uncertainty for downstream tasks. Existing works rely on the independence assumption of points in the radiance field or the pixels in input views to obtain tractable forms of the probability density function. However, this assumption inadvertently impacts performance when dealing with intricate geometry and texture. In this work, we propose an independence-assumption-free probabilistic neural radiance field based on Flow-GAN. By combining the generative capability of adversarial learning and the powerful expressivity of normalizing flow, our method explicitly models the density-radiance distribution of the whole scene. We represent our probabilistic NeRF as a mean-shifted probabilistic residual neural model. Our model is trained without an explicit likelihood function, thereby avoiding the independence assumption. Specifically, We downsample the training images with different strides and centers to form fixed-size patches which are used to train the generator with patch-based adversarial learning. Through extensive experiments, our method demonstrates state-of-the-art performance by predicting lower rendering errors and more reliable uncertainty on both synthetic and real-world datasets.

Audio classification plays a crucial role in speech and sound processing tasks with a wide range of applications. There still remains a challenge of striking the right balance between fitting the model to the training data (avoiding overfitting) and enabling it to generalise well to a new domain. Leveraging the transferability of contrastive learning, we introduce Audio Contrastive-based Fine-tuning (AudioConFit), an efficient approach characterised by robust generalisability. Empirical experiments on a variety of audio classification tasks demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our approach, which achieves state-of-the-art results in various settings., Comment: Under review

Fault-tolerant operations based on stabilizer codes are the state of the art in suppressing error rates in quantum computations. Most such codes do not permit a straightforward implementation of non-Clifford logical operations, which are necessary to define a universal gate set. As a result, implementations of these operations must either use error-correcting codes with more complicated error correction procedures or gate teleportation and magic states, which are prepared at the logical level, increasing overhead to a degree that precludes near-term implementation. In this work, we implement a small quantum algorithm, one-qubit addition, fault-tolerantly on the Quantinuum H1-1 quantum computer, using the [[8,3,2]] colour code. By removing unnecessary error-correction circuits and using low-overhead techniques for fault-tolerant preparation and measurement, we reduce the number of error-prone two-qubit gates and measurements to 36. We observe arithmetic errors with a rate of $\sim 1.1 \times 10^{-3}$ for the fault-tolerant circuit and $\sim 9.5 \times 10^{-3}$ for the unencoded circuit., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

Filter bank multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC-OQAM) is an alternative to OFDM for enhanced spectrum flexible usage. To reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), DFT spreading is usually adopted in OFDM systems. However, in FBMC-OQAM systems, because the OQAM pre-processing splits the spread data into the real and imaginary parts, the DFT spreading can result in only marginal PAPR reduction. This letter proposes a novel map-DFT-spread FBMC-OQAM scheme. In this scheme, the transmitting data symbols are first mapped with a conjugate symmetry rule and then coded by the DFT. According to this method, the OQAM pre-processing can be avoided. Compared with the simple DFT-spread scheme, the proposed scheme achieves a better PAPR reduction. In addition, the effect of the prototype filter on the PAPR is studied via numerical simulation and a trade-off exists between the PAPR and out-of-band performances.

Affordable 3D scanners often produce sparse and non-uniform point clouds that negatively impact downstream applications in robotic systems. While existing point cloud upsampling architectures have demonstrated promising results on standard benchmarks, they tend to experience significant performance drops when the test data have different distributions from the training data. To address this issue, this paper proposes a test-time adaption approach to enhance model generality of point cloud upsampling. The proposed approach leverages meta-learning to explicitly learn network parameters for test-time adaption. Our method does not require any prior information about the test data. During meta-training, the model parameters are learned from a collection of instance-level tasks, each of which consists of a sparse-dense pair of point clouds from the training data. During meta-testing, the trained model is fine-tuned with a few gradient updates to produce a unique set of network parameters for each test instance. The updated model is then used for the final prediction. Our framework is generic and can be applied in a plug-and-play manner with existing backbone networks in point cloud upsampling. We present Point-TTA, a novel test-time adaptation framework for point cloud registration (PCR) that improves the generalization and the performance of registration models. While learning-based approaches have achieved impressive progress, generalization to unknown testing environments remains a major challenge due to the variations in 3D scans. Existing methods typically train a generic model and the same trained model is applied on each instance during testing. This could be sub-optimal since it is difficult for the same model to handle all the variations during testing. In this paper, we propose a test-time adaptation approach for PCR. Our model can adapt to unseen distributions at test-time without requiring any prior knowledge of the test data. Concretely, we design three self-supervised auxiliary tasks that are optimized jointly with the primary PCR task. Given a test instance, we adapt our model using these auxiliary tasks and the updated model is used to perform the inference. During training, our model is trained using a meta-auxiliary learning approach, such that the adapted model via auxiliary tasks improves the accuracy of the primary task. The MuST package is a computational software designed for ab initio electronic structure calculations for solids. The Locally Self-consistent Multiple Scattering (LSMS) method implemented in MuST allows to perform the electronic structure calculation for systems with a large number of atoms per unit cell. For the LSMS method with muffin-tin potential approximation, the major computational challenge is the matrix inverse for the scattering matrix calculation, which could take more than 90\% of the computing time. However, the matrix inverse can be significantly accelerated by modern graphical-processing-units (GPUs). In this paper, we discuss our approach to the code acceleration by offloading the matrix inverse tasks to the GPUs through a Fortran-C interface from the Fortran code to the CUDA code. We report our performance results showing significant speedup ratio achieved to the calculations of NiAu alloy, a candidate for thermoelectric materials.

Cloud-native architecture is becoming increasingly crucial for today's cloud computing environments due to the need for speed and flexibility in developing applications. It utilizes microservice technology to break down traditional monolithic applications into light-weight and self-contained microservice components. However, as microservices grow in scale and have dynamic inter-dependencies, they also pose new challenges in resource provisioning that cannot be fully addressed by traditional resource scheduling approaches. The various microservices with different resource needs and latency requirements can create complex calling chains, making it difficult to provide fine-grained and accurate resource allocation to each component while maintaining the overall quality of service in the chain. In this work, we aim to address the research problem on how to efficiently provision resources for the growing scale of microservice platform and ensure the performance of latency-critical microservices. To address the problem, we present in-depth analyses of Alibaba's microservice cluster and propose optimized resource provisioning algorithms to enhance resource utilization while ensuring the latency requirement. First, we analyze the distinct features of microservices in Alibaba's cluster compared to traditional applications. Then we present Alibaba's resource capacity provisioning workflow and framework to address challenges in resource provisioning for large-scale and latency-critical microservice clusters. Finally, we propose enhanced resource provisioning algorithms over Alibaba's current practice by making both proactive and reactive scheduling decisions based on different workloads patterns, which can improve resource usage by 10-15% in Alibaba's clusters, while maintaining the necessary latency for microservices., Comment: 19 pages

Explainable Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have been developed and applied to drug-protein binding prediction to identify the key chemical structures in a drug that have active interactions with the target proteins. However, the key structures identified by the current explainable GNN models are typically chemically invalid. Furthermore, a threshold needs to be manually selected to pinpoint the key structures from the rest. To overcome the limitations of the current explainable GNN models, we propose our SLGNN, which stands for using Sparse Learning to Graph Neural Networks. Our SLGNN relies on using a chemical-substructure-based graph (where nodes are chemical substructures) to represent a drug molecule. Furthermore, SLGNN incorporates generalized fussed lasso with message-passing algorithms to identify connected subgraphs that are critical for the drug-protein binding prediction. Due to the use of the chemical-substructure-based graph, it is guaranteed that any subgraphs in a drug identified by our SLGNN are chemically valid structures. These structures can be further interpreted as the key chemical structures for the drug to bind to the target protein. We demonstrate the explanatory power of our SLGNN by first showing all the key structures identified by our SLGNN are chemically valid. In addition, we illustrate that the key structures identified by our SLGNN have more predictive power than the key structures identified by the competing methods. At last, we use known drug-protein binding data to show the key structures identified by our SLGNN contain most of the binding sites.

JPEG is one of the most popular image compression methods. It is beneficial to compress those existing JPEG files without introducing additional distortion. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based method to further compress JPEG images losslessly. Specifically, we propose a Multi-Level Parallel Conditional Modeling (ML-PCM) architecture, which enables parallel decoding in different granularities. First, luma and chroma are processed independently to allow parallel coding. Second, we propose pipeline parallel context model (PPCM) and compressed checkerboard context model (CCCM) for the effective conditional modeling and efficient decoding within luma and chroma components. Our method has much lower latency while achieves better compression ratio compared with previous SOTA. After proper software optimization, we can obtain a good throughput of 57 FPS for 1080P images on NVIDIA T4 GPU. Furthermore, combined with quantization, our approach can also act as a lossy JPEG codec which has obvious advantage over SOTA lossy compression methods in high bit rate (bpp$>0.9$).

We demonstrate that spin-dependent electron diffraction is possible for a smooth range of transverse electron momenta in a two-photon Bragg scattering scenario of the Kapitza-Dirac effect. Our analysis is rendered possible by introducing a generalized specification for quantifying spin-dependent diffraction, yielding an optimization problem which is solved by making use of a Newton gradient iteration scheme. With this procedure, we investigate the spin-dependent effect for different transverse electron momenta and different laser polarizations of the standing light wave Kapitza-Dirac scattering. The possibility for using arbitrarily low transverse electron momenta, when setting up a spin-dependent Kapitza-Dirac experiment allows longer interaction times of the electron with the laser and therefore enables less constraining parameters for an implementation of the effect., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

Depression, a common mental disorder, significantly influences individuals and imposes considerable societal impacts. The complexity and heterogeneity of the disorder necessitate prompt and effective detection, which nonetheless, poses a difficult challenge. This situation highlights an urgent requirement for improved detection methods. Exploiting auditory data through advanced machine learning paradigms presents promising research directions. Yet, existing techniques mainly rely on single-dimensional feature models, potentially neglecting the abundance of information hidden in various speech characteristics. To rectify this, we present the novel Attention-Based Acoustic Feature Fusion Network (ABAFnet) for depression detection. ABAFnet combines four different acoustic features into a comprehensive deep learning model, thereby effectively integrating and blending multi-tiered features. We present a novel weight adjustment module for late fusion that boosts performance by efficaciously synthesizing these features. The effectiveness of our approach is confirmed via extensive validation on two clinical speech databases, CNRAC and CS-NRAC, thereby outperforming previous methods in depression detection and subtype classification. Further in-depth analysis confirms the key role of each feature and highlights the importance of MFCCrelated features in speech-based depression detection.

In this paper, we consider a real-world scenario where a model that is trained on pre-defined classes continually encounters unlabeled data that contains both known and novel classes. The goal is to continually discover novel classes while maintaining the performance in known classes. We name the setting Continual Generalized Category Discovery (C-GCD). Existing methods for novel class discovery cannot directly handle the C-GCD setting due to some unrealistic assumptions, such as the unlabeled data only containing novel classes. Furthermore, they fail to discover novel classes in a continual fashion. In this work, we lift all these assumptions and propose an approach, called MetaGCD, to learn how to incrementally discover with less forgetting. Our proposed method uses a meta-learning framework and leverages the offline labeled data to simulate the testing incremental learning process. A meta-objective is defined to revolve around two conflicting learning objectives to achieve novel class discovery without forgetting. Furthermore, a soft neighborhood-based contrastive network is proposed to discriminate uncorrelated images while attracting correlated images. Despite Graph Neural Networks demonstrating considerable promise in graph representation learning tasks, GNNs predominantly face significant issues with over-fitting and over-smoothing as they go deeper as models of computer vision realm. In this work, we conduct a systematic study of deeper GNN research trajectories. Our findings indicate that the current success of deep GNNs primarily stems from (I) the adoption of innovations from CNNs, such as residual/skip connections, or (II) the tailor-made aggregation algorithms like DropEdge. However, these algorithms often lack intrinsic interpretability and indiscriminately treat all nodes within a given layer in a similar manner, thereby failing to capture the nuanced differences among various nodes. To this end, we introduce the Snowflake Hypothesis -- a novel paradigm underpinning the concept of ``one node, one receptive field''. The hypothesis draws inspiration from the unique and individualistic patterns of each snowflake, proposing a corresponding uniqueness in the receptive fields of nodes in the GNNs. We employ the simplest gradient and node-level cosine distance as guiding principles to regulate the aggregation depth for each node, and conduct comprehensive experiments including: (1) different training schemes; (2) various shallow and deep GNN backbones, and (3) various numbers of layers (8, 16, 32, 64) on multiple benchmarks (six graphs including dense graphs with millions of nodes); (4) compare with different aggregation strategies. The observational results demonstrate that our hypothesis can serve as a universal operator for a range of tasks, and it displays tremendous potential on deep GNNs. It can be applied to various GNN frameworks, enhancing its effectiveness when operating in-depth, and guiding the selection of the optimal network depth in an explainable and generalizable way.

E-commerce, a type of trading that occurs at a high frequency on the Internet, requires guaranteeing the integrity, authentication and non-repudiation of messages through long distance. As current e-commerce schemes are vulnerable to computational attacks, quantum cryptography, ensuring information-theoretic security against adversary's repudiation and forgery, provides a solution to this problem. However, quantum solutions generally have much lower performance compared to classical ones. Besides, when considering imperfect devices, the performance of quantum schemes exhibits a significant decline. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate the whole e-commerce process of involving the signing of a contract and payment among three parties by proposing a quantum e-commerce scheme, which shows resistance of attacks from imperfect devices. Results show that with a maximum attenuation of 25 dB among participants, our scheme can achieve a signature rate of 0.82 times per second for an agreement size of approximately 0.428 megabit. Multi-View Stereo~(MVS) is a fundamental problem in geometric computer vision which aims to reconstruct a scene using multi-view images with known camera parameters. However, the mainstream approaches represent the scene with a fixed all-pixel depth range and equal depth interval partition, which will result in inadequate utilization of depth planes and imprecise depth estimation. In this paper, we present a novel multi-stage coarse-to-fine framework to achieve adaptive all-pixel depth range and depth interval. We predict a coarse depth map in the first stage, then an Adaptive Depth Range Prediction module is proposed in the second stage to zoom in the scene by leveraging the reference image and the obtained depth map in the first stage and predict a more accurate all-pixel depth range for the following stages. In the third and fourth stages, we propose an Adaptive Depth Interval Adjustment module to achieve adaptive variable interval partition for pixel-wise depth range. The depth interval distribution in this module is normalized by Z-score, which can allocate dense depth hypothesis planes around the potential ground truth depth value and vice versa to achieve more accurate depth estimation. Extensive experiments on four widely used benchmark datasets~(DTU, TnT, BlendedMVS, ETH 3D) demonstrate that our model achieves state-of-the-art performance and yields competitive generalization ability. Particularly, our method achieves the highest Acc and Overall on the DTU dataset, while attaining the highest Recall and $F_{1}$-score on the Tanks and Temples intermediate and advanced dataset. Moreover, our method also achieves the lowest $e_{1}$ and $e_{3}$ on the BlendedMVS dataset and the highest Acc and $F_{1}$-score on the ETH 3D dataset, surpassing all listed methods.Project website: https://github.com/zs670980918/ARAI-MVSNet

Learning-to-rank is a core technique in the top-N recommendation task, where an ideal ranker would be a mapping from an item set to an arrangement (a.k.a. permutation). Most existing solutions fall in the paradigm of probabilistic ranking principle (PRP), i.e., first score each item in the candidate set and then perform a sort operation to generate the top ranking list. However, these approaches neglect the contextual dependence among candidate items during individual scoring, and the sort operation is non-differentiable. To bypass the above issues, we propose Set-To-Arrangement Ranking (STARank), a new framework directly generates the permutations of the candidate items without the need for individually scoring and sort operations; and is end-to-end differentiable. As a result, STARank can operate when only the ground-truth permutations are accessible without requiring access to the ground-truth relevance scores for items. For this purpose, STARank first reads the candidate items in the context of the user browsing history, whose representations are fed into a Plackett-Luce module to arrange the given items into a list. To effectively utilize the given ground-truth permutations for supervising STARank, we leverage the internal consistency property of Plackett-Luce models to derive a computationally efficient list-wise loss. Experimental comparisons against 9 the state-of-the-art methods on 2 learning-to-rank benchmark datasets and 3 top-N real-world recommendation datasets demonstrate the superiority of STARank in terms of conventional ranking metrics. Notice that these ranking metrics do not consider the effects of the contextual dependence among the items in the list, we design a new family of simulation-based ranking metrics, where existing metrics can be regarded as special cases. To observe the ${\gamma}$ rays emitted from the low-lying isomeric state of $^{229}$Th ($^{229\rm{m}}$Th), we aim to dope fluoride crystals with its precursor $^{229}$Pa. In this study, we produced $^{229}$Pa by a 30-MeV proton bombardment on $^{232}$Th and developed a chemical separation method. The chemical yield of Pa was 93(4)%, and the physical production yield of $^{229}$Pa for the proton energy range of 29.0${-}$30.1 MeV was measured to be 9.4(8) MBq/${\rm{\mu}}$Ah, which was more than 10 times higher than those of $^{232,230,228,233}$Pa. These high chemical and production yields will allow us to prepare fluoride crystals having a sufficient amount of $^{229}$Pa for the observation of the ${\gamma}$ rays of $^{229\rm{m}}$Th.

Superconductivity is realized by opening a gap in the superconducting state. The gap symmetry is crucial in understanding the underlying superconductivity mechanism. The magnitude and the phase are essential in fully characterizing the superconducting gap. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has played a key role in determining the gap symmetry in unconventional superconductors. However, it has been considered so far that ARPES can only measure the magnitude of the superconducting gap but not its phase; the phase has to be detected by other phase-sensitive techniques. Here we propose a new method to directly detect the superconducting gap sign by using ARPES. This method is successfully validated in a cuprate superconductor with a well-known $d$-wave gap symmetry. When two bands are nearby in momentum space and have a strong interband interaction, the resulted electronic structures in the superconducting state are sensitive to the relative gap sign between the two bands which can be captured by ARPES measurements. Our present work provides a new way to detect the gap sign and can be applied to various superconductors, particularly those with multiple orbitals like the iron-based superconductors. It also makes ARPES more powerful to determine both the gap magnitude and the phase that are significant in understanding the superconductivity mechanism of unconventional superconductors., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

Ultrahigh quality factor (Q) microcavities have been emerging as an appealing compact photonic platform for various applications. The Q factor plays a critical role in determining the nonlinear optical performance of a microcavity. However, a silica microcavity suffers from severe degradation of its Q value over time during storage or use in air due to the accumulating surface absorption loss, which would deteriorate their nonlinear photonic performance. Here, we report a new type of ultrahigh Q silica microcavity that effectively prevents the Q degradation over time. The Q values of the devices remain unchanged over time under storage in air. Optical frequency combs are generated with sustainable ultralow threshold performance in the course of time from the devices in open air. This approach would greatly facilitate ultrahigh Q silica-based photonic devices for next generation photonic applications.

A set of nozzle equipment for proton therapy is now being developed at China Institute of Atomic Energy. To facilitate the off-line commissioning of the whole equipment, a set of ionization chamber signal generation system, the test electronics, is designed. The system uses ZYNQ SoC as the main control unit and outputs the beam dose analog signal through DAC8532. The dual SPDT analog switch, DG636, is used to simulate the beam position signals according to Gaussian distribution. The results show that the system can simulate the beam position, dose, and other related analog signals generated by the proton beam when passing through the ionization chamber. Moreover, the accuracy of the simulated beam position is within +/-0.33mm, and the accuracy of the simulated dose signal is within +/-1%. At the same time, it can output analog signals representing environmental parameters. The test electronics meets the design requirements, which can be used to commission the nozzle system as well as the treatment control system without the proton beam.

The Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) is currently the only sky survey providing optical ($ugri$) plus near-infrared (NIR, $ZYHJK_S$) seeing matched photometry over an area larger than 1000 $\rm deg^2$. This is obtained by incorporating the NIR data from the VISTA Kilo Degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, covering the same KiDS footprint. As such, the KiDS multi-wavelength photometry represents a unique dataset to test the ability of stellar population models to return robust photometric stellar mass ($M_*$) and star-formation rate (SFR) estimates. Here we use a spectroscopic sample of galaxies for which we possess $u g r i Z Y J H K_s$ ``gaussianized'' magnitudes from KiDS data release 4. We fit the spectral energy distribution from the 9-band photometry using: 1) three different popular libraries of stellar {population} templates, 2) single burst, simple and delayed exponential star-formation history models, and 3) a wide range of priors on age and metallicity. As template fitting codes we use two popular softwares: LePhare and CIGALE. We investigate the variance of the stellar masses and the star-formation rates from the different combinations of templates, star formation recipes and codes to assess the stability of these estimates and define some ``robust'' median quantities to be included in the upcoming KiDS data releases. As a science validation test, we derive the mass function, the star formation rate function, and the SFR-$M_*$ relation for a low-redshift ($z<0.5$) sample of galaxies, that result in excellent agreement with previous literature data. We theoretically investigate the nonlinear response current of a two-dimensional system under an in-plane magnetic field. Based on the extended semiclassical theory, we develop a unified theory including both longitudinal and transverse currents and classify contributions according to their scaling with the relaxation time. Besides time-reversal-even contributions, we reveal a previously unknown time-reversal-odd contribution to the Hall current, which occurs in magnetic systems, exhibits band geometric origin, and is linear in relaxation time. We show that the different contributions exhibit different symmetry characters, especially in their angular dependence on the field orientation, which can be used to distinguish them in experiment. The theory is explicitly demonstrated in the study of the Rashba model. Our work presents a deepened understanding of nonlinear planar transport, proposes approaches to distinguish different contributions, and sheds light on possible routes to enhance the effect in practice., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Nowadays the app-in-app paradigm is becoming increasingly popular, and sub-apps have become an important form of mobile applications. WeChat, the leading app-in-app platform, provides millions of sub-apps that can be used for online shopping, financing, social networking, etc. However, privacy issues in this new ecosystem have not been well understood. This paper performs the first systematic study of privacy over-collection in sub-apps (denoted as SPO), where sub-apps actually collect more privacy data than they claim in their privacy policies. We propose a taxonomy of privacy for this ecosystem and a framework named SPOChecker to automatically detect SPO in real-world sub-apps. Based on SPOChecker, we collect 5,521 popular and representative WeChat sub-apps and conduct a measurement study to understand SPO from three aspects: its landscape, accountability, and defense methods. The result is worrisome, that more than half of all studied sub-apps do not provide users with privacy policies. Among 2,511 sub-apps that provide privacy policies, 489 (19.47%) of them contain SPO. We look into the detailed characteristics of SPO, figure out possible reasons and the responsibilities of stakeholders in the ecosystem, and rethink current defense methods. Crypto wallets are a key touch-point for cryptocurrency use. People use crypto wallets to make transactions, manage crypto assets, and interact with decentralized apps (dApps). However, as is often the case with emergent technologies, little attention has been paid to understanding and improving accessibility barriers in crypto wallet software. We present a series of user studies that explored how both blind and sighted individuals use MetaMask, one of the most popular non-custodial crypto wallets. We uncovered inter-related accessibility, learnability, and security issues with MetaMask. We also report on an iterative redesign of MetaMask to make it more accessible for blind users. This process involved multiple evaluations with 44 novice crypto wallet users, including 20 sighted users, 23 blind users, and one user with low vision. Our study results show notable improvements for accessibility after two rounds of design iterations. Bulge-disk (B-D) decomposition is an effective diagnostic to characterize the galaxy morphology and understand its evolution across time. So far, high-quality data have allowed detailed B-D decomposition to redshift below 0.5, with limited excursions over small volumes at higher redshifts. Next-generation large sky space surveys in optical, e.g. from the China Space Station Telescope (CSST), and near-infrared, e.g. from the space EUCLID mission, will produce a gigantic leap in these studies as they will provide deep, high-quality photometric images over more than 15000 deg2 of the sky, including billions of galaxies. Here, we extend the use of the Galaxy Light profile neural Network (GaLNet) to predict 2-S\'ersic model parameters, specifically from CSST data. We simulate point-spread function (PSF) convolved galaxies, with realistic B-D parameter distributions, on CSST mock observations to train the new GaLNet and predict the structural parameters (e.g. magnitude, effective radius, Sersic index, axis ratio, etc.) of both bulge and disk components. We find that the GaLNet can achieve very good accuracy for most of the B-D parameters down to an $r$-band magnitude of 23.5 and redshift $\sim$1. The best accuracy is obtained for magnitudes, implying accurate bulge-to-total (B/T) estimates. To further forecast the CSST performances, we also discuss the results of the 1-S\'ersic GaLNet and show that CSST half-depth data will allow us to derive accurate 1-component models up to $r\sim$24 and redshift z$\sim$1.7.

Autonomous parking (AP) is an emering technique to navigate an intelligent vehicle to a parking space without any human intervention. Existing AP methods based on mathematical optimization or machine learning may lead to potential failures due to either excessive execution time or lack of generalization. To fill this gap, this paper proposes an integrated constrained optimization and imitation learning (iCOIL) approach to achieve efficient and reliable AP. The iCOIL method has two candidate working modes, i.e., CO and IL, and adopts a hybrid scenario analysis (HSA) model to determine the better mode under various scenarios. We implement and verify iCOIL on the Macao Car Racing Metaverse (MoCAM) platform. Different with conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), simultaneous transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) can reflect and transmit the signals to the receiver. In this paper, to serve more ground users and increase the deployment flexibility, we investigate an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a STAR-RIS (STAR-RIS-UAV) aided wireless communications for multi-user networks. Energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) protocols are considered to control the reflection and transmission coefficients of STAR-RIS elements. To maximize the sum rate of the STAR-RIS-UAV aided coordinated multipoint cellular system for multi-user networks, the corresponding beamforming vectors as well as transmitted and reflected coefficients matrices are optimized. Specifically, instead of adopting the alternating optimization, we design an iteration method to optimize all variables for both ES and MS protocols at the same time. Simulation results reveal that STAR-RIS-UAV aided wireless communication system has a much higher sum rate than the system with conventional RIS or without RIS. Estimating the 3DoF rotation from a single RGB image is an important yet challenging problem. As a popular approach, probabilistic rotation modeling additionally carries prediction uncertainty information, compared to single-prediction rotation regression. For modeling probabilistic distribution over SO(3), it is natural to use Gaussian-like Bingham distribution and matrix Fisher, however they are shown to be sensitive to outlier predictions, e.g. $180^\circ$ error and thus are unlikely to converge with optimal performance. In this paper, we draw inspiration from multivariate Laplace distribution and propose a novel rotation Laplace distribution on SO(3). Our rotation Laplace distribution is robust to the disturbance of outliers and enforces much gradient to the low-error region that it can improve. In addition, we show that our method also exhibits robustness to small noises and thus tolerates imperfect annotations. With this benefit, we demonstrate its advantages in semi-supervised rotation regression, where the pseudo labels are noisy. To further capture the multi-modal rotation solution space for symmetric objects, we extend our distribution to rotation Laplace mixture model and demonstrate its effectiveness.
