Reading the paper to know the past: Carla Bittel, Elaine Leong, and Christine von Oertzen: Working with paper: gendered practice in the history of knowledge. This collection of essays restores to our attention the important place of paper and "paper stuff" in the gendered knowledge practices of Europe and the United States from the early modern to the modern period. Given the scope of its content, the book would have benefited from an introductory chapter from the editor. The breadth of regional, chronological and methodological coverage presented together in a single volume is the key strength of the book, and the editor should be congratulated for soliciting additional contributions from beyond the conference attendees. Although this is the only chapter in the volume that deals with heritage that falls within the traditional remit of maritime archaeology - specifically boats - she embeds her study of a traditional craft into a broader narrative. The following fourth and fifth chapters are devoted to paper-based electrochemical devices, including interesting and new points of view such as the role of paper in electroanalytical devices with special emphasis on its use as reactor as well as on the employ of different electrochemical techniques (amperometric, voltammetric, impedimetric or potentiometric), on the development of lateral and vertical flow paper-based microfluidic devices or on the detection in liquid and gas phases. The first chapter explores paper as a substrate for electrochemical micro-devices, being this principle of detection the most promising in the (bio)sensor field. The following three chapters (nineth, tenth and eleventh) are more specific, related to nanopaper-based (optical and electrical) sensors, nanoparticle-based lateral flow assays, and flexible cellulose-based devices for monitoring physical parameters. Chapter 7 contains perhaps the newest contribution to the history of cell theory in the book, as the work and career of Mazia have not been treated significantly by historians of science. Sherrie Lyons has produced a potentially useful survey of cell theory from its earliest days in the seventeenth century (Anton van Leeuwenhoek and Robert Hooke) using the simplest microscopes, through the introduction and improvement of the compound microscope, stains and methods of preparing specimen in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, through the mid-1980s and work of cell biologist Daniel Mazia (1912-1996) with the introduction of the electron microscope and molecular tools for studying the details of cell structure and function. McCain also begins his paper by hinting that the goal of science is to provide an understanding of natural phenomena, which he seems to see as synonymous with explanations. In this book, fifteen authors address the issue of scientism from a philosophical perspective. A philosophical doctrine closely connected to scientism is reductionism. Mariam Thalos even sees this as the core of scientism and she criticizes both epistemological and ontological forms of reductionism, specifically a general reductionism of human behavior to either biology or physics. Clearly, this argument is aimed only at the more extreme protagonists of scientism, since several authors who subscribe to some form of scientism are happy to accept that there is a lot of legitimate ordinary knowledge, as long as that is continuous with science.
