Abstract

Given the size and importance of Chicago's Polish community, the Chicago story, as pridefully told in this book, stands in for the history of Polish America, interweaving the affairs of neighborhood parishes and local organizations with the general history of Poles in the United States, which those parishes and organizations played a great role in making. Pacyga demonstrates that a Polish Chicago still exists, but shows that it is a new Polish Chicago comprising Solidarity- and post-Solidarity-era immigrants and ethnic Poles who have moved to Chicago's suburbs. But wishful liberal nostrums which paper over the long history of racialism in America or rely upon rainbow fantasies to transcend it fail to appreciate how deeply entrenched white racism still is in American society and American institutions; how deeply white supremacism has penetrated portions - perhaps large - of contemporary America, despite no less palpable racial progress; and how difficult it will be to root these out when, it appears (in the wake of the 2020 presidential election) that sizable numbers of white Americans would rather keep racial matters in America much as they have been since the end of slavery days. There is no reference to a ninth sphere in the I Almagest i but a number of Arabic and Jewish scholars believed that Ptolemy thought there were nine spheres. In his lead-in paper, "The Ancient Ptolemy", Alexander Jones seeks to present Ptolemy "in the round" and begins by asking which "Ptolemaic" works Ptolemy wrote. But when Ptolemy criticizes some astrological theories Pico uses Ptolemy the astronomer to add weight to the criticisms. The section on Greek and Near Eastern Traditions closes with Boyadar Dimitrov's "'Fort.recte': Witnesses to the Text of Ptolemy's I Tetrabiblos i in Its Near Eastern Transmission", which considers a "fragmentarily preserved, possibly pre-Islamic Syriac translation" of Ptolemy's classic work on astrology (p. 97). In the context of sportsmen and sportswomen in social places, [17] show how high-profile professional athletes experiencing difficulties perpetuate their "athlete" persona. Therefore, the coach must consistently act "like a coach" in the eyes of their players as part of the sporting environment (the setting) in order to establish and maintain the appropriate and expected interaction ([19]). In the context of our paper, it was found that coaches and star athletes and players that are leaders exhibit different types of leadership behaviors ([13]). Halberstam's I Playing for Keeps: Michael Jordan and the world he made i ([9]) was written after Jordan's second retirement and was the first try to take full measure of Jordan's epic career and the larger forces that converged to make him the iconic figure he became. Abstract

Aim: The goal of this paper is to provide a protocol for conducting a fifth population-based Auckland Regional Community Stroke study (ARCOS V) in New Zealand. Methods and Discussion : In this study, for the first time globally, (1) stroke and TIA burden will be determined using the currently used clinical and tissue-based definition of stroke, in addition to the WHO clinical classifications of stroke used in all previous ARCOS studies, as well as more advanced criteria recently suggested for an "ideal" population-based stroke incidence and outcomes study; and (2) age, sex, and ethnic-specific trends in stroke incidence and outcomes will be determined over the last four decades, including changes in the incidence of acute cerebrovascular events over the last decade. Furthermore, information at four time points over a 40-year period will allow the assessment of effects of recent changes such as implementation of the FAST campaign, ambulance pre-notification, and endovascular treatment. This will enable more accurate projections for health service planning and delivery. Conclusion: The methods of this study will provide a foundation for future similar population-based studies in other countries and populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As he reminds us throughout, the author of this book should know what he's writing about, as he has been in the business a long time; Dr Day was, among other things, on the Publications Board of the American Society for Microbiology for some 19 years. A transatlantic approach first becomes evident on the second page of the Preface, with a reference to 'graduate students', but apart from some differences in spelling and a few words or constructions which sound awkward to the English ear ('transmittal' for 'transmission'), this is not a drawback. What is more irritating is a prevailing sense of smugness: when reading the Preface I assumed the author was tongue-in-cheek while writing 'For those of you who share my tremendous admiration for How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper, let me tell you a bit about its history', but by the time I'd finished the whole book, I was not so sure. The author declares his intention 'to make the reader laugh' and has weighed things down with what I suspect he would call a 'leavening' of humour; he may be a good raconteur in the flesh, but writing jokes down, one soon realizes, is a quite different talent, as my first quotation suggests.
