An essay is presented on U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. It describes Lincoln as among the most responsible of statesmen and the most successful of rulers. It also states that Lincoln may be lacking in manliness of character, in decision of principle, as well as strength of will. A speech on "Assuming the Presidency of the Birmingham and Midland Institute," delivered in Birmingham, England on October 6, 1884 is also presented.
