17. An evolutionarily stable strategy to colonize spatially extended habitats.

Abstract

The ability of a species to colonize newly available habitats is crucial to its overall fitness1-3. In general, motility and fast expansion are expected to be beneficial for colonization and hence for the fitness of an organism4-7. Here we apply an evolution protocol to investigate phenotypical requirements for colonizing habitats of different sizes during range expansion by chemotaxing bacteria8. Contrary to the intuitive expectation that faster is better, we show that there is an optimal expansion speed for a given habitat size. Our analysis showed that this effect arises from interactions among pioneering cells at the front of the expanding population, and revealed a simple, evolutionarily stable strategy for colonizing a habitat of a specific size: to expand at a speed given by the product of the growth rate and the habitat size. These results illustrate stability-to-invasion as a powerful principle for the selection of phenotypes in complex ecological processes.

Abstract

Bacteria tightly regulate and coordinate the various events in their cell cycles to duplicate themselves accurately and to control their cell sizes. Growth of Escherichia coli, in particular, follows a relation known as Schaechter 's growth law. This law says that the average cell volume scales exponentially with growth rate, with a scaling exponent equal to the time from initiation of a round of DNA replication to the cell division at which the corresponding sister chromosomes segregate. Here, we sought to test the robustness of the growth law to systematic perturbations in cell dimensions achieved by varying the expression levels of mreB and ftsZ. We found that decreasing the mreB level resulted in increased cell width, with little change in cell length, whereas decreasing the ftsZ level resulted in increased cell length. Furthermore, the time from replication termination to cell division increased with the perturbed dimension in both cases. Moreover, the growth law remained valid over a range of growth conditions and dimension perturbations. The growth law can be quantitatively interpreted as a consequence of a tight coupling of cell division to replication initiation. Thus, its robustness to perturbations in cell dimensions strongly supports models in which the timing of replication initiation governs that of cell division, and cell volume is the key phenomenological variable governing the timing of replication initiation. These conclusions are discussed in the context of our recently proposed adder-per-origin model, in which cells add a constant volume per origin between initiations and divide a constant time after initiation.

Abstract

It is a challenge to maintain a safe and efficient tracking for multiple high-speed trains under the moving block operational mode. In this paper, a novel cooperative tracking control based on a consensus algorithm and artificial potential field theory is proposed to realize the train tracking within a distance range. A tunable artificial potential function is first designed to dynamically adjust the distance between adjacent high-speed trains with real-time train states. By regulating the parameters of the artificial potential function, the safety distance can be adjusted according to the required tolerance deviation of the actual distance. Under the proposed strategy, each high-speed train operates with the desired speed and tracks the preceding one with an adjustable distance range. Abstract

Fundamental problems of periodicity and transient process to periodicity of chaotic trajectories in computer realization with finite computation precision is investigated by taking single and coupled Logistic maps as examples. Empirical power law relations of the period and transient iterations with the computation precisions and the sizes of coupled systems are obtained. For each computation we always find, by randomly choosing initial conditions, a single dominant periodic trajectory which is realized with major portion of probability. 50. Resource Reservation Coordination for Vehicle Platooning in C-V2X Networks

Abstract

High-reliability and low-latency communication is essential for timely information exchange in vehicle platooning. As a key enabler of this, the cellular vehicular-to-everything (C-V2X) network uses a sensing-based semi-persistent scheduling (SPS) protocol, where radio resources are reserved for a number of transmissions with reduced resource re-allocation and control overhead. However, consecutive access collisions may be caused by reservation conflict, which leads to long delay and threatens platoon’s stability and safety. In this paper, a coordinating resource reservation (CRR) protocol is proposed for vehicle platooning. By implementing error detection with coordination among platoon vehicles, the resource reservation is improved for reduced collisions and delay. Specifically, packet reception/loss information is sent out by platoon vehicles through their own packets. Such information is shared with transmitters and guides them to reserve new resources when access collision occurs. As a result, long delay is avoided while no extra feedback packet is introduced. Furthermore, Markov analysis is presented to evaluate the performance of SPS and the proposed CRR for vehicle platooning, providing the quantified performance gains. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed CRR in reducing packet loss and latency, compared with the legacy SPS and other state-of-the-art solutions.
