The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau is the highest and largest permafrost area in the middle and low latitudes of China. In this region, permafrost thaw settlement is the main form of expressway subgrade disaster. Therefore, the quantitative analysis and regionalization study of permafrost thaw settlement deformation are of great significance for expressway construction and maintenance in the Qinghai–Tibet region. This paper establishes a thaw settlement prediction model using the thaw settlement coefficient and thaw depth. The thaw depth was predicted by the mean annual ground temperatures and active-layer thicknesses using the Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network model, and the thaw settlement coefficient was determined according to the type of ice content. Further, the distribution characteristics of thaw settlement risk of the permafrost subgrade in the study region were mapped and analyzed. The results showed that the thaw settlement risk was able to be divided into four risk levels, namely significant risk, high risk, medium risk and low risk levels, with the areas of these four risk levels covering 3868.67 km2, 1594.21 km2, 2456.10 km2 and 558.78 km2, respectively, of the total study region. The significant risk level had the highest proportion among all the risk levels and was mainly distributed across the Chumar River Basin, Beiluhe River Basin and Gaerqu River Basin regions. With the depletion of shallow mineral resources, deep shaft mining has become an inevitable trend, but there is a lack of systematic review on the hazards of deep shaft mining ecological environment on miners' occupational health. The aim of this paper is to study the impact and main hazards of deep shaft mining ecological environment on miners' occupational health, summarize the existing research results and reveal their limitations, and put forward the latest targeted improvement technologies. The conclusions show that the environmental characteristics of deep mine dust, noise, and high temperature seriously jeopardize occupational health. Pneumoconiosis has become one of the biggest threats, with nearly 14,000 new cases per year since 2009; harmful noise exposure is widespread in deep mines, directly jeopardizing occupational health, with a detection rate of 29.96% of hearing impairment among China's 480,200,000 miners; and the average ground temperatures at the current mining depths of -1,000 m and -2,000 m are 41.84℃ and 69.62℃, respectively, which are very likely to trigger a variety of heat-related diseases in miners. In space gravitational-wave-detection missions, inertial sensors are used as the core loads, and their acceleration noise needs to reach 3 × 10 − 15   ms − 2 / Hz at a frequency of 0.1   mHz , which corresponds to the capacitive sensing system; the capacitive sensing noise on the sensitive axis needs to reach 1   aF / Hz . Unlike traditional circuit noise evaluation, the noise in the mHz frequency band is dominated by the thermal noise and the 1 / f noise of the device, which is a challenging technical goal. In this paper, a low-frequency, high-precision resonant capacitor bridge method based on a planar transformer is used. Compared with the traditional winding transformer, the developed planar transformer has the advantages of low temperature drift and low 1 / f noise. For closed-loop measurements of capacitive sensing circuits and sensitive structures, the minimum capacitive resolution in the time domain is about 3   aF , which is far lower than the scientific measurement resolution requirement of 5.8   fF for gravitational wave detection. The capacitive sensing noise is converted to 1.095   aF / Hz in the frequency band of 10   mHz – 1   Hz . Although there is a gap between the closed-loop measurement results and the final index, the measurement environment is an experimental condition without temperature control on the ground; additionally, in China, the measurement integrity and actual measurement results of the capacitive sensing function have reached a domestic leading level. As a major parameter in the energy balance of the ground surface, temperature represents the level of exchange of energy and moisture between the ground and air. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) has the permafrost region with the highest altitude and the largest area in low–middle latitude of the world. The variation in ground surface temperature has an impact on the existence and development of the permafrost. Therefore, the analysis of the ground surface temperature in the QTP is significant to reflect the energy exchange in permafrost regions. This paper collected solar radiation data and calculated the conversion coefficient from total solar radiation to long-wave radiation of the ground surface on different underlying surfaces. The ground surface temperature was inversely calculated and modified based on the reception of solar radiation on different underlying surfaces. A simplified calculation model of ground surface temperature was built to reflect the ground surface temperature on different underlying surfaces of the QTP. The calculation results were compared with MODIS and showed good fitness, providing a systematic and reliable method for calculating the ground surface temperature on the QTP. The construction of 1500 m depth shaft in Xincheng Gold Mine, China, faces complex stress conditions such as high geostress (>50 MPa), high ground temperature (>50 °C), high water-pressure (>9 MPa), and highly corrosive. Traditional deep shafts excavated by the sinking and lining method cannot adapt to high geostress problems, such as rock bursts and large deformations, etc., in the deep shaft construction process. To avoid and adjust the high geostress induced the rockburst and large deformations, the mechanism of the advanced sequential geopressure release (ASGR) has been proposed for the ground control in deep shaft construction. In this paper, the safe distance between the concrete lining and the shaft excavation face is determined based on the ASGR mechanism, which can provide the space for geopressure release, and primary support based on rock mass quality and numerical simulation was employed to control the geopressure and deformation. A new support scheme for the deep shaft is proposed, using long bolts to restrain severe deformations, metal mesh, and a double reinforcement bar to improve the induced stress distribution. According to the results, the construction scheme of deep shaft has been improved, and the safe support distance of the proposed scheme is determined to be 12 m, with an interval of three excavation cycles. Compared to the original scheme of shaft lining after excavation, the proposed scheme based on the ASGR mechanism can effectively improve the geopressure release and benefit from controlling the rockburst and large deformation of deep shaft induced by high geostress conditions. The stress distribution in the lining is more uniform, and safety factor of the lining is increased to 2.0, which is benefit the long-term stability of deep shaft. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because of the high costs involved in CO sequestration in deep saline formations, it has been difficult for its widespread application in the short term. Recently, however, a new technology called 'combined geothermal production-CO sequestration technology' has made the technique more attractive not only by increasing the CO storage capacity, but also by decreasing the operational costs, through the utilization of geothermal energy, either directly or for the purpose of producing electricity. A CO-aided (or CO-involved) geothermal extraction system (CO-AGES) is presented, based on existing technologies and the new ideas of 'combined geothermal production-CO sequestration' introduced in this paper. This system can be used to extract geothermal energy from sedimentary aquifer formations (low-medium temperature) at different stages. The purpose of this paper is to set up an evaluation system for selecting a suitable site for this CO-AGES system. There are both similarities and differences in the procedure needed for selecting a site for a conventional pure CO sequestration and for this CO-AGES system. Both are carried out at different scales, including basin, region and target formation scales. The biggest difference is the temperature gradient, which plays an opposite role in the two systems. By using the preliminary ranking and screening method presented in this paper, it can be shown that the Bohaiwan, Songliao and Qiangtang basins have the highest potential for the application of this CO-AGES technology. However, if CO sequestration is considered alone, the Ordos, Tarim and Bohaiwan basins should be selected as the best three operational sites in China. While preliminary evaluation methods can provide some useful information on the selection of the best sites for the 'combined geothermal production-CO sequestration technology', more detailed work is still required because of the strong uncertainties that exist in the determination of the upper and lower boundaries for each indicator. Taking the Suiqi coalfield located in North China as the object, where the coal seam burial depth is more than 1100 m, the water abundance of the roof pore thermal storage aquifer is better than average, the ground temperature is abnormally high, and hydrogeological data are relatively lacking, this paper selects and determines eight index factors that influence the mining of the coalfield. Based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), the index factor weight is defined, and then, the threat degree of the roof thermal storage aquifer to the coal mining is quantitatively evaluated and divided by using the fuzzy variable set theory. The evaluation results show that the threat degree of the roof in the eastern region is generally greater than that in the western region and that the closer it is to the coal seam outcrop line, the higher the threat degree is; near the boreholes, in the areas Qs1,Qs5, Qs8, Sx1, Tk5, Zc4, and Zc7, which are close to the hidden outcrop line of the coal seam, the classification characteristic value of the threat degree is greater than 3.5, which is in the high-threat zone for disasters caused by roof thermal storage aquifers during coal seam mining. The area above the medium-threat zone accounts for 71.82% of the total study area, indicating that deep coal mining is affected by multiple factors and that roof water and heat disasters are more likely to occur. To fully understand the temperature distribution of cold regions and the variation law of temperature fields in cold-region tunnels, this paper presents a case-history study on a tunnel located on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. The conclusion is as follows: the temperature outside the tunnel and the ambient temperature are affected by wind speed and light. The law of the temperature field in the tunnel is greatly affected by wind speed and wind direction. According to the field test, the wind speed in the tunnel is about 2.8 m/s in winter, and the daily average temperature at the exit of the tunnel is basically lower than that at the entrance. From the central to the entrance, the temperature in the tunnel decreases by 0.11°C every 10 meters along the longitudinal direction; from the central to the exit, the temperature in the tunnel increases by 0.07°C every 10 meters. In this regard, for the problems of lining frost damage and central drainage pipe freezing, it is suggested to adopt the way of heating and drainage, but heating the freezing area outside the drainage pipe should be avoided. The test results can provide references for the design, construction, and research of the temperature field of the tunnel antifreezing system in the cold region. It is hoped that the test results can be useful in the design and construction of frost damage prevention systems and the investigation of temperature fields in cold-region tunnels. Soil moisture conditions affect energy partitioning between sensible and latent heat fluxes, resulting in a change in surface temperatures. In this study, the relationships between antecedent soil moisture conditions [as indicated by the 6-month standardized precipitation index (SPI)] and several temperature indices are statistically quantified using the quantile regression analysis across East China to investigate the influence of soil moisture on summer surface temperatures. These temperature indices include percentage of hot days (%HD), heat-wave duration (HWD), daily temperature range (DTR), and daily minimum temperature (Tmin). It was demonstrated that soil moisture had a significant impact on %HD and HWDat higher quantiles in all regions but the east, suggesting that drier soil moisture conditions tend to intensity summer hot extremes. It was also found that hot extremes (%HD and HWD at higher quantiles) had increased substantially from 1958 to 2010. Soil moisture also significantly affected the DTR in all regions but tended to have more impacts on the DTR in soil moisture-limited regimes than in energy-limited regimes. This paper combines observations, climatic analysis, and numerical modeling to investigate the Tibetan Plateau's (TP) surface heating conditions' influence on extreme persistent precipitation events (PEPEs) in southeastern China. Observations indicated an increase of TP surface air temperature 3-4 days prior to extreme persistent precipitation events in southeastern China. NCEP reanalysis data revealed a significant low pressure anomaly in southern China and a high pressure anomaly in northern China during extreme persistent precipitation event periods. Using correlation analysis and random resampling nonparametric statistics, a typical PEPE event from 17 to 25 June 2010 was selected for numerical simulation. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model was used to investigate the impact of the TP's surface heating on the evolution of this event. Three contrasting WRF experiments were conducted with different surface heating strengths by changing initial soil moisture over the TP. Different soil conditions generate different intensities of surface sensible heat fluxes and boundary layer structures over the TP resulting in two main effects on downstream convective rainfall: modulating large-scale atmospheric circulations and modifying the water vapor transport at southern China. Increased surface heating in the TP strengthens a high pressure system over the Yangtze Plain, thereby blocking the northward movement of precipitation. It also enhances the water vapor transport from the South China Sea to southern China. The combined effects substantially increase precipitation over most of the southeastern China region. Although previous studies show that urbanization contributes to less than 10 % of the long-term regional total warming trend of mean surface air temperature in northeast China (Li et al. ), the urban heat island (UHI) impact on extreme temperatures could be more significant. This paper examines the urbanization impact on extreme winter minimum temperatures from 33 stations in North China during the period of 1957-2010. We use the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution to analyze the distribution of extreme minimum temperatures and the long-term variations of the three distributional characteristics parameters. Results suggest that among the three distribution parameters, the position parameter is the most representative in terms of the long-term extreme minimum temperature change. A new classification method based on the intercommunity (factors analysis method) of the temperature change is developed to detect the urbanization effect on winter extreme minimum temperatures in different cities. During the period of rapid urbanization (after 1980), the magnitude of variations of the three distribution parameters for the urban station group is larger than that for the reference station group, indicating a higher chance of occurrence of warmer weather and a larger fluctuation of temperatures. Among different types of cities, the three parameters of extreme minimum temperature distribution of the urban station group are, without exception, higher than those of the reference station group. The urban heat island describes the phenomenon that air/surface temperatures are higher in urban areas compared to their surrounding rural areas. Numerous studies have shown that increased percent cover of greenspace (PLAND) can significantly decrease land surface temperatures (LST). Fewer studies, however, have investigated the effects of configuration of greenspace on LST. This paper aims to fill this gap using Beijing, China as a case study. PLAND along with six configuration metrics were used to measure the composition and configuration of greenspace. The metrics were calculated based on a greenspace map derived from SPOT imagery, and LST data were retrieved from Landsat TM thermal band. Ordinary least squares regression and spatial autoregression were employed to investigate the relationship between LST and spatial pattern of greenspace using the census tract as the analytical unit. The results showed that PLAND was the most important predictor of LST. A 10 % increase in PLAND resulted in approximately a 0.86 °C decrease in LST. Configuration of greenspace also significantly affected LST. Given a fixed amount of greenspace, LST increased significantly with increased patch density. In addition, the variance of LST was largely explained by both composition and configuration of greenspace. The unique variation explained by the composition was relatively small, and was close to that of the configuration. Results from this study can expand our understanding of the relationship between LST and vegetation, and provide insights for improving urban greenspace planning and management. In-situ monitoring system is absolutely necessary for a long-distance linear pipeline infrastructure in permafrost regions due to the complicated interaction between buried pipeline and its harsh permafrost environment. To study this complex problem, a comprehensive in-situ monitoring system has been designed and established along the China–Russia Crude Oil Pipeline (CRCOP), which is one of vital energy channels for importing crude oil from Russia to China. This monitoring system can record the meteorological data, ground temperature and water content within the permafrost foundation, vertical settlement of the oil pipe, ground surface deformation on the pipeline right-of-way (on-ROW), as well as the thaw bulb around the pipeline at four sites with different engineering geological conditions. In this paper, the layout and instrumentation of the whole monitoring system and monitoring methods are described in detail, and then the thermal regime of permafrost on-ROW and off-ROW and cooling performance of the mitigative measures on foundation soils are evaluated. Results show that heat dissipated from the CRCOP lead to the rapid degradation of permafrost on-ROW and produce different sizes of thaw bulb around the oil pipelines. The mitigative measures, including insulation layer, two-phase closed thermosyphon and U-shaped air-ventilated pipes, are effective to minimize permafrost degradation and ensure the thermal stability of permafrost foundation along the CRCOP. Some recommendations are proposed for future research and for the monitoring system to be improved. Abstract: Remote sensing has become an important method for monitoring urban thermal environment, but, it is still difficult to analysis the spatio-temporal change of urban thermal environment quantitatively only by ground surface temperature (or brightness temperature). Three indexes on urban thermal environment monitoring are proposed in this paper: heat island intensity, heat field intensity index and heat island proportion index. Based on MODIS surface temperature products and FY3A/MERSI data of two years, urban thermal environment is monitored by remote sensing method in Beijing. The empirical results verify that three indexes proposed in this paper are meaningful in monitoring of urban heat island. It can not only monitor the intensity and changes of the urban heat island in Beijing effectively, but also, it is positive to carrying out meteorological operations in city thermal environment monitoring. The Zhujiang Delta of South China has experienced a rapid urban expansion over the past two decades due to accelerated economic growth. This paper reports an investigation into the application of the integration of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) for detecting urban growth and assessing its impact on surface temperature in the region. Remote sensing techniques were used to carry out land use/cover change detection by using multitemporal Landsat Thematic Mapper data. Urban growth patterns were analysed by using a GIS-based modelling approach. The integration of remote sensing and GIS was further applied to examine the impact of urban growth on surface temperatures. The results revealed a notable and uneven urban growth in the study area. This urban development had raised surface radiant temperature by 13.01 K in the urbanized area. The integration of remote sensing and GIS was found to be effective in monitoring and analysing urban growth patterns, and in evaluating urbanization impact on surface temperature. Climate plays a significant role in shaping ecosystem-level carbon sinks. Research on the mechanisms of climate impacts on carbon sinks can contribute to the achievement of carbon neutrality. Investigating the mechanisms by which climate impact on carbon sinks in ecological spaces in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, one of the most important urban clusters in China, is of great significance. This study employed spatial autocorrelation and econometric models to explore how various climatic factors impact net primary productivity (which is used to represent carbon sink capacity) on a spatial scale. We found an increasing trend in NPP across the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomeration from 2000 to 2020, with marked spatial clustering. Climatic factors exhibited the best fit with the spatial Durbin model, except for average annual precipitation. The remaining factors had significant effects on NPP, showing spatial spillover effects. Results also showed that the average annual temperature, evaporation, and relative humidity had positive impacts on NPP at a local scale but adverse effects at a regional scale. Average annual sunshine duration and the ground temperature had negative effects on NPP locally but promoted effects regionally. Furthermore, the average annual wind speed negatively impacted both local- and regional-scale NPP. This research provides insights into how climate affects carbon sinks on a small spatial scale, offering important references for making policy decisions and improving the accuracy of carbon cycling simulations. Rapid permafrost thawing triggered by heat release from the buried warm-oil pipeline would result in the instability of the pipeline, posing a potential risk of an oil spill in permafrost regions. Therefore, how to precisely control the ground temperature to mitigate pipeline foundation permafrost from thawing is of significant importance. Thermosyphon is a widely-accepted and extensively-used countermeasure against permafrost thawing in permafrost engineering. This paper presents 3-year (2015–2018) monitored data of ground temperature and geophysical survey results conducted by electrical resistivity tomography in April 2018, to investigate the thermal stabilizing effect of thermosyphons installed nearby the China-Russia crude oil pipeline (CRCOP) and the influencing factors. Furthermore, numerical simulation tests were conducted to evaluate their long-term cooling applicability and to optimize their layout parameters. Field observations show that the thermosyphons can cool down and even freeze the thawed soil layers around the CRCOP, prohibiting the infiltration of water into the thawing front to some extent and effectively mitigating the rapid thawing of permafrost beneath the pipeline. The performance of the thermosyphons is greatly influenced by the method and time of thermosyphon installation, as well as layout parameters including the number and longitudinal spacing. Two pairs of thermosyphons with a shorter spacing are unable to control the thawing of the underlying permafrost due to the non-anticipated higher oil temperature, the thermal erosion of water ponding, and climate warming. The simulated results indicate that thermosyphons perform well in the first 5 years after installation. Thermosyphon lowers the mean annual temperature of soils surrounding it by about 2 and 1.4 times when the evaporator section length is increased by 50% and the longitudinal spacing is decreased by 0.5 m, respectively. The application of thermosyphons has proven its strength for thermally stabilizing the pipeline foundation permafrost along the CRCOP. • 3-year ground temperature data and geophysical survey results are presented. • Thermosyphon can mitigate the rapid thawing of permafrost beneath the pipeline. • Thermosyphons performs most significantly in the first five years. • Lengthening thermosyphon and decreasing spacings are favorable for the better cooling effect. Thermokarst terrain is developing at an accelerating pace in the ice‐rich permafrost on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP), China, and the most dramatic of these terrain‐altering thermokarsts is retrogressive thaw slump (RTS). The freeze–thaw erosion (FTE) impacts are sharply increasing on the Plateau due to RTS, especially as a result of the migration of fine sediments in cold climates, these impacts are still not quantified due to the limitation of hydro‐thermal‐mass transport laws in RTS development. Moreover, it is difficult to assess the impact of RTS on the ecology and environment, especially on soil erosion. This study developed a heat–water‐mass transport coupled model of a RTS in the Beiluhe River Region on the QTP, considering the actual topography, water‐ice phase change, latent heat, and surface heat exchange layer. Based on the observed data of ground temperature, unfrozen water content, and heat flux, the coupled model herein is practicable for presenting the geotemperature regime and groundwater flow in the RTS area, thereby quantifying the ice‐rich permafrost thaw and mass wasting. The results presented indicate that: (1) the seepage velocity of the superficial zone (0–1.5 m depth) is two orders of magnitude higher than that of the permafrost table; (2) the mean ice‐rich permafrost thaw volume was 13.4 m2 from 2016 to 2021; and (3) the cumulative mass transport volume was 22 m2 from July 2020 to September 2021. In addition, the relation between the FTE (shown as the migration of sediments) and the amount of ground ice ablation can be fitted by an exponential equation. Examining large-scale characteristics of the difference between ground surface temperature (GST) and surface air temperature (SAT) and its long-term trend will help understand land surface energy exchange and the effect of land-atmosphere interaction on climate change and variability. Based on a homogenized monthly dataset of GST and SAT from 1961 to 2018, this study analyzes the spatial distribution and long-term trend of the difference between ground surface temperature and surface air temperature (GST–SAT) in the warm season (April to October) over China mainland. The results show that the warm-season mean GST–SAT in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the northwestern deserts have the largest GST–SAT. On average, the GST–SAT in China is the greatest in summer, with the maximum monthly value occurring in July. During 1961–2018, the warm-season mean GST–SAT undergoes a significant increasing trend (0.04 °C/10yr, p < 0.01), with the largest increase seen in mid-late spring (April and May), and the smallest increase in August. Spatially, the GST–SAT increases significantly in the northern region, decreases slightly in the southern region, and remains unchanged in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The warm-season mean GST–SAT is significantly positively correlated with altitude and sunshine duration (R = 0.50, 0.40; p < 0.05), and significantly negatively correlated with relative humidity and precipitation (R = 0.48, −0.42; p < 0.05), in the country on a whole in the analysis period. The Sichuan-Chongqing area in China has complex basin topography and is known for its extremely hot summer weather. In this paper, the mesoscale model WRF version 3.6.1 was used to simulate a period of 1–10 days in advance of the hot weather that occurred in Sichuan-Chongqing on August 10, 2006, to investigate the effect of six different land surface schemes (LSSs) (SLAB, RUC, PX, NOAH, NOAH_MP, and CLM4) on short- and medium-range simulations of high temperatures. The simulated surface air temperatures (SATs) are sensitive to the LSSs and simulation lengths. Specifically, all of the LSSs except PX generally reproduce the observed high temperatures, with CLM4 SATs at 06 UTC (SAT06) the most consistent with measurements whereas the short-range (medium-range) results from NOAH_MP (NOAH) are the worst. Detailed explanations were given in terms of surface fluxes and physical processes. RUC soil moisture initialization appears poor and the LSS reflects too strong gravity drainage. When the LSSs with increased numbers of soil layers are used, the simulated high temperatures are found more consistent with measurements. Condensation on ground often occurring in rural residence in hot and humidity area is a threat against its indoor thermal comfort. This paper studies the moisture-proof measures on ground in rural residence in Chongqing area. A typical two-story rural residence was modelled by using DesignBuilder software. The data of annual ground temperature and humidity which were used to calculate the duration and strength of condensation in cases of using ordinary residential cement ground and thermal insulation ground was simulated. The results show that: for Chongqing rural residence, the temperature of the first floor is generally lower 1-2 degrees than that of the second floor; The ground condensation of rural residence in Chongqing area are mainly concentrated from the end of March to early July; the effect of thermal insulation ground to avoid condensation is good to solve the problems occurred in rural residence, when the insulation layer thickness is 50 mm and the thermal resistance value is 0.49m 2 · K / W, it can basically eliminate the ground condensation. Embankment deformation is a key consideration in high speed railway construction. Frost heave due to temperature and moisture variation is critical to consider in areas of seasonally frozen ground. This paper examined ground temperatures, frost heave, and moisture content in 2013–2014 at two sites along the embankment of the Harbin-Dalian Passenger Dedicated Line (HDPDL) railway. The railway is in seasonally-frozen ground of Jilin Province, China. The embankment at one site (K977) was built on the undisturbed ground surface while the other was in a cut section (K1004). Displacement measurements over one year indicated that frost heave of 14 mm at K977 and 25 mm at K1004 occurred in ballast during the freezing season. During the annual freeze-thaw period, soil moisture content varied drastically in the upper 0.6 m. The frost depth and freezing index were strongly and positively correlated during the freezing season. Soil moisture content was regarded as the primary control on the amount of frost heave, while frost depth was secondary. Furthermore, water vapor diffusion may have been an important contributor to the formation of near-surface ice. At K1004 site, the maximum recorded deformation was large and exceeded the 15 mm Chinese standard for maximum allowable heave. Engineering corridors on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau have substantially modified the regional ecosystem functions and environment, resulting in changes in the alpine ecosystem. In addition, the building and operation of these engineering corridors have led to rapid permafrost degradation, which in turn has impacted local vegetation along these corridors. This study investigated vegetation changes and their driving factors by the methods of coefficient of variation, correlation analysis, and GeoDetector in a 30 km wide buffer zone at each side along the National Highway G214 (G214) at the northern and southern flanks of the Bayan Har Mountains in part of the source area of the Yellow and Yangtze rivers on the southern Qinghai Plateau, West China. The following results were obtained: (1) The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index in Growing Season (NDVIgs) rose slightly in 2010–2019, with an average annual change rate of 0.006/a. Patterns of NDVIgs along the G214 exhibited "low at the northern flank and high at the southern flank of the Bayan Har Mountains". (2) Spatially, average NDVIgs increased from the first buffer zone at the distance of 0–10 km from the highway centerline to the second buffer zone at 20–30 km perpendicularly away from the G214. Furthermore, the first buffer zone had the lowest coefficient of variation, possibly due to a low vegetation recovery as a result of the greatest influence of the G214 on NDVIgs at 0–10 km. (3) Furthermore, annual precipitation (AP) was the dominant factor for significantly (p < 0.01) and positively influencing the variations in NDVIgs (R = 0.75, p < 0.01). Additionally, NDVIgs was more strongly influenced by the two combined factors than any single one, with the highest q-value (0.74) for the interactive influences of AP and annual average air temperature (AAAT) and followed by that of the AP and mean annual ground temperature (MAGT) at the depth of zero annual amplitude (15 m). Evidently, the construction and operation of the G214 have directly and indirectly affected vegetation through changing environmental variables, with significant impacts on NDVIgs extended at least 20 km outwards from the highway. Precipitation (PRE) is an essential factor that affects the negative air ions (NAIs) concentrations. However, the mechanism of NAIs concentrations and their influencing factors on rainy and non-rainy days remains unclear. Here, we used hourly data of NAIs concentrations and meteorological data in 2019 to analyze the distribution of NAIs concentrations and its influencing factors on rainy and non-rainy days in the Wuyi Mountain National Park (WMNP) of China, which was listed as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site in 1999. The results indicated that the NAIs concentrations on rainy days were significantly higher than on non-rainy days. However, the NAIs concentrations on rainy days were slightly higher than on the first and second days after rainy days. Then, the NAIs concentrations were significantly reduced on the third day and after that. Thus, rainy days lead to a 2-day lag in the smooth reduction of NAIs on non-rainy days after rainy days. NAIs concentrations were significantly correlated with the relative humidity (RHU) on both rainy and non-rainy days. By analyzing the meteorological factors on NAIs for ranking the feature importance scores on rainy and non-rainy days, PRE was ranked first on rainy days, and sea level pressure (PRS_Sea) and temperature (TEM) were ranked first and second on non-rainy days, respectively. Based on the univariate linear regression model (ULRM), NAIs concentrations responded strongly (higher absolute slope values) to RHU on rainy days and to pressure (PRS), visibility (VIS), water vapor pressure (VAP), TEM, and ground surface temperature (GST) on non-rainy days. Permafrost in Northeastern China has significantly degraded due to global warming, deforestation and urbanization in the last few decades. The frost heave and thaw subsidence induced by freeze-thaw cycles of deep seasonal frozen ground have caused serious damage to infrastructures. The Shiwei-Labudalin (Shi-La) Highway is an important infrastructure connecting Shiwei town and Labudalin town of Argun city, Inner Mongolia, which passes through the areas covered by deep seasonal frozen ground or isolated patchy permafrost. In this paper, we mapped the long-term linear displacement trend and amplitude of seasonal displacement of the Shi-La Highway and its nearby areas, with an ascending Sentinel-1 dataset acquired from September 2016 to April 2020. Seasonal displacement amplitudes of 5–20 mm are widely detected in low-lying areas (e.g., the basin of the Gen and Derbugan rivers). The time lags between frozen ground displacement and temperature variations generally range from 10 to 80 days while larger values of 100–120 days caused by soil moisture or land cover difference are also observed. Linear creep displacement rates greater than −20 mm/yr are detected on mountainous slopes and sections of the Shi-La Highway in the line-of-sight (LOS) direction. The ecological environment in permafrost regions is very sensitive to climate change and human activities. The effects of coal mining on the vegetation in permafrost regions have been poorly studied. Herein, on the basis of a field survey in the Juhugen mining area of Qilian Mountain, China, we investigated and quantified the influence of open-pit coal mining on vegetation coverage degradation in permafrost areas. According to the NDVI and field survey, the vegetation coverage was divided into five levels from low to high in the Arc GIS platform. Compared with the area not affected by coal mining, vegetation degradation was significant in the coal-mining-affected area, especially in the high-vegetation-coverage area. The vegetation coverage in Level 5 decreased from 51.99% to 21.35%. According to the conversion matrix, the transfer-out area in high coverage was larger, while the transfer-in area in low vegetation coverage was larger. The transfer-out area of five levels was significant in levels 2–5, accounting for 36.1% to 62.8% of the total area. The transfer-in area of five levels was significant in levels 1–4, accounting for 55.2% to 75.0% of the total area. Moreover, the ground surface temperature and water change were monitored in the vegetation degradation area. The thermal state of permafrost in the present and future is fundamental to ecosystem evolution, hydrological processes, carbon release and infrastructure integrity in cold regions. In 2011, we initiated a permafrost monitoring network along the China–Russia crude oil pipeline (CRCOP) route at the eastern flank of the northern Da Xing'anling Mountains in Northeast China. We compiled an integrated dataset of the ground thermal state along the CRCOP route consisting of meteorological data near the southern limit of latitudinal permafrost, ground temperature (GT) data in 20 boreholes with depths of 10.0–60.6 m, soil volumetric liquid water contents (VWCs) and 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data at different sites. Results demonstrate a permafrost warming during 2011–2020 in the vicinity of the southern limit of latitudinal permafrost, as manifested by rising GTs at almost all depths in response to climate warming. Local thermal disturbances triggered by the construction and operation of CRCOPs have resulted in significant permafrost warming and subsequent thawing on the right-of-way (ROW) of the pipelines. This permafrost thaw will persist, but it can be alleviated by adopting mitigative measures, such as an insulation layer and thermosyphons. The in situ observational dataset is of great value for assessing the variability of permafrost under the linear disturbances of the CRCOPs and related environmental effects, for understanding hydro–thermal–mechanical interactions between the buried pipelines and permafrost foundation soils, and for evaluating the operational and structural integrity of the pipeline systems in the future. Northeast China has experienced rapid and substantial climate warming over the past 60 years, and permafrost is degrading rapidly. In this study, permafrost distribution and extent in Northeast China were estimated from monitored ground surface temperatures using the temperature at the top of permafrost (TTOP) model and geographically weighted regression method. Using the TTOP model, the computed mean annual ground temperatures (MAGT@TOP) at the top of permafrost of Northeast China increased significantly from 1961–1990 (1.8°C) to 1991–2020 (3.0°C). The areal extents of permafrost defined by a subzero MAGT@TOP (MAGT@TOP ≤ 0°C) in Northeast China in the period 1961–1990 and 1991–2020 were estimated at 461.5 × 103 and 365.8 × 103 km2, respectively, indicating a decline of 95.7 × 103 km2. On average, the simulated MAGT@TOP values were 2.07°C lower than the observed MAGT@TOP values in boreholes. The linear correlation coefficient between the simulated and measured MAGT@TOP values was 0.63. Compared with the simulation results of other previous models, the result of this research is more reliable and accurate. Air/soil temperatures play important roles in land–atmosphere interactions. The three-dimensional (temporal, spatial, and vertical) variations of maximum, mean, and minimum ground soil temperature at 0 cm (GSTx, GSTm, and GSTn, respectively), surface air temperature at 2 m (SATx, SATm, and SATn, respectively), and soil–air temperature difference (SATDx, SATDm, and SATDn, respectively) and their potential linkages with large-scale indexes in Southwest China during 1980–2019 were analyzed. Variations of GST and SAT at the majority of stations (pixels) exhibited significant (p ≤ 0.05) warming, albeit at different rates; consequently, SATD exhibited different variation. Moreover, the period of GST, SAT, and SATD was similar in intra-annual and interannual oscillation but was different in interdecadal oscillation. The variation rate of GST, SAT, and SATD exhibited significant (p ≤ 0.05) correlation with elevation, but with different variation gradient. Notably, asymmetric variation of SATDx (downward trend) and of SATDn (upward trend) with elevation was found at elevations >3 km. Wavelet coherence showed that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation is the dominant factor affecting GST and SAT, whereas the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the North Atlantic Oscillation make the greatest contributions to SATD. With the acceleration of urbanization, ozone (O3) pollution has become increasingly serious in many Chinese cities. This study analyzes the temporal and spatial characteristics of O3 based on monitoring and meteorological data for 366 cities and national weather stations throughout China from 2016 to 2020. Least squares linear regression and Spearman's correlation coefficient were computed to investigate the relationships of O3 with various pollution factors and meteorological conditions. Global Moran's I and the Getis–Ord index G i * were adopted to reveal the spatial agglomeration of O3 pollution in Chinese cities and characterize the temporal and spatial characteristics of hot and cold spots. The results show that the national proportion of cities with an annual concentration exceeding 160 μg·m−3 increased from 21.6% in 2016 to 50.9% in 2018 but dropped to 21.5% in 2020; these cities are concentrated mainly in Central China (CC) and East China (EC). Throughout most of China, the highest seasonal O3 concentrations occur in summer, while the highest values in South China (SC) and Southwest China (SWC) occur in autumn and spring, respectively. The highest monthly O3 concentration reached 200 μg·m−3 in North China (NC) in June, while the lowest value was 60 μg·m−3 in Northeast China (NEC) in December. O3 is positively correlated with the ground surface temperature (GST) and sunshine duration (SSD) and negatively correlated with pressure (PRS) and relative humidity (RHU). Wind speed (WIN) and precipitation (PRE) were positively correlated in all regions except SC. O3 concentrations are significantly differentiated in space: O3 pollution is high in CC and EC and relatively low in the western and northeastern regions. Based on remote sensing data of vegetation coverage, observation data of basic meteorological elements, and support vector machine (SVM) method, this study develops an analysis model of meteorological elements influence on vegetation coverage (MEVC). The variations for the vegetation coverage changes are identified utilizing five meteorological elements (temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, sunshine hour, and ground temperature) in the SVM model. The performance of the SVM model is also evaluated on simulating vegetation coverage anomaly change by comparing with statistical model multiple linear regression (MLR) and partial least squares (PLS)-based models. The symbol agreement rates (SAR) of simulations produced by MLR, PLS, and SVM models are 55%, 57%, and 66%, respectively. The SVM model shows obviously better performance than PLS and MLR models in simulating meteorological elements-related interannual variation of vegetation coverage in North China. Therefore, the introduction of the intelligent analysis method in term of SVM in model development has certain advantages in studying the internal impact of meteorological elements on regional vegetation coverage. Abstract: Vitrinite reflectance (VR, Ro%) measurements from residual kerogen of pyrolysis experiments were performed on immature Maoming Oil Shale substituted the samples for the gas-prone source rocks of Yacheng formation of the Qiongdongnan Basin in the South China Sea. The work was focused on determination an upper limit of maturity for gas generation (ULMGG) or “the deadline of natural gas generation”. Ro values at given temperatures increase with increasing temperature and prolonged heating time, but ΔRo-value, given a definition of the difference of all values for VR related to higher temperature and adjacent lower temperature in open-system non-isothermal experiment at the heating rate of 20°C/min, is better than VR. And representative examples are presented in this paper. It indicates that the range of natural gas generation for Ro in the main gas generation period is from 0.96% to 2.74%, in which ΔRo is in concordance with the stage for the onset and end of the main gas generation period corresponding to 0.02% up to 0.30% and from 0.30% up to 0.80%, respectively. After the main gas generation period of 0.96–2.74%, the evolution of VR approach to the ULMGG of the whole rock for type II kerogen. It is equal to 4.38% of VR, where the gas generation rates change little with the increase of maturation, ΔRo is the maximum of 0.83% corresponding to VR of 4.38%Ro, and the source rock does not nearly occur in the end process of hydrocarbon gas generation while Ro is over 4.38%. It shows that it is the same the ULMGG from the whole rock for type II kerogen as the method with both comparison and kinetics. By comparing to both the conclusions of pyrolysis experiments and the data of VR from the source rock of Yacheng formation on a series of selected eight wells in the shallow-water continental shelf area, it indicate that the most hydrocarbon source rock is still far from reaching ULMGG from the whole rock for type II kerogen. The source rock of Yacheng formation in the local areas of the deepwater continental slope basin have still preferable natural gas generative potential, especially in the local along the central depression belt (namely the Ledong, Lingshui, Songnan and Baodao sags from southwest to northeast) from the depocenter to both the margin and its adjacent areas. It help to evaluate the resource potential for oil and gas of the hydrocarbon source rock in the deepwater continental slope of the Qiongdongnan Basin or other basins with lower exploration in the northern of the South China Sea and to reduce the risk in exploration. Abstract: The analysis of the passive microwave radiance transfer equation certifies that there is a linear relationship between satellite-generated brightness temperatures (BT) and in situ observation temperature and that land surface temperature (LST) is largely influenced by vegetation cover conditions. Microwave polarization difference index (MPDI) is an effective indicator for characterizing the land surface vegetation cover density. Based on the analysis of LST models from AMSR-E BT with 6.9GHz MPDI intervals at 0.04, 0.02 and 0.01, respectively, this paper developed a simplified LST regression model with MPDI-based five land cover types, combining observation temperatures from 86 meteorological observation stations. The study shows that smaller MPDI intervals can obtain higher accuracy of AMSR-E LST simulation, and that the combination of HDF Explorer and ArcGIS software was useful for automatically processing the pixel latitude, longitude and BT information from the AMSR-E HDF imagery files. The RMSE of the five LST simulation algorithms is between 1.47 and 1.92°C, with an average LST retrieval error of 0.91–1.30°C. Besides, only 7 polarization bands and 5 land surface types are required by the proposed simplified model. The new LST simulation models appears to be more effective for producing LST compared to past most studies, of which the accuracy used to be more than 2°C. This study is one of the rare applications that combine the meteorological observation temperature with MPDI to produce the LST regression analysis algorithms with less RMSE from AMSR-E data. Abstract: The China–Russia Crude Oil Pipeline (CRCOP), 813mm in diameter, is designed to transport 603,000 barrels of Siberian crude oil per day across 1030km of frozen-ground. About 500 boreholes, with depths of 5 to 20m, were drilled and cored for analyses, and the frozen-ground conditions were evaluated. After detailed surveys and analyses of the permafrost conditions along the pipeline route, a conventional burial construction mode at a nominal depth of 1.5m was adopted. This paper discusses the principles and criteria for the zonation and assessment of the frozen-ground environments and conditions of engineering geology for the design, construction, and operation of the pipeline system based on an extensive and in-depth summary and analysis of the survey and exploration data. The characteristics of pipelining crude oil at ambient temperatures in the permafrost regions and the interactive processes between the pipeline and foundation soils were taken into account. Two zones of frozen-ground environment and conditions of engineering geology, i.e., seasonally-frozen-ground and permafrost, were defined on the basis of the regional distribution and differentiations in frozen-ground environments and conditions. Then, four subzones of the permafrost zone were classified according to the areal extent, taking into consideration the temperatures and thicknesses of permafrost, as well as changes in vegetation coverage. In the four subzones, 151 sections of engineering geology were categorized according to the ice/moisture contents of the permafrost, as well as the classes of frost-heaving and thaw-settlement potentials. These 151 sections are comprehensively summarized into four types for engineering construction and operation: good, fair, poor, and very poor, for overall conditions of engineering geology. The zonation, assessment principles and criteria have been applied in the design of the pipeline. In seasonally frozen soil regions, freezing-thawing action and hydrothermal effect have strong influence on physical and mechanical behavior of shallow soil. A field experiment on the Loess Plateau in Northwest China was carried out to analyze the freezing-thawing process and hydrothermal characteristics of shallow soil considering the climate influence. The results show that the maximum seasonal freezing depth under bare ground surface in this area is from 20 cm to 50 cm. The ground temperature shows a similar changing trend with air temperature, but it has lagged behind the air temperature, and the ground temperature amplitude exponentially decreases with the increase of soil depth. The seasonally frozen soil has experienced four typical stages: unfrozen period, alternate freezing period, freezing period and alternate thawing period. The freezing-thawing process is characterized by unidirectional freezing and bidirectional thawing. The water content of shallow soil is significantly affected by air temperature, evaporation and precipitation, and the soil water content shows a "low-high-low" changing trend with the increase of depth. The soil temperature and water content interact with each other, and are often coupled. The variation trend of soil moisture with time is consistent with the change trend of the ground temperature with time in each soil layer, and the degree of consistency is higher in the near surface soil than that in the lower layer. Also, the spatial-temporal characteristics of soil moisture and temperature is that the volumetric water content and ground temperature of near surface soil have strong variability, and the range value Ka and coefficient of variation Cv of soil water content and ground temperature in different seasons show a decreasing trend with the increase of depth. Smart materials such as shape memory alloys (SMAs) have unique material properties that can potentially mitigate structural damage against earthquake. However, the mechanical behavior of SMAs is sensitive to temperature variation. The traditional deterministic analysis, which does not take into account the influence of temperature, may lead to inaccurate and sometimes unsafe predictions of actual behavior of SMA‐based structures. This research aims to develop a modified framework based on the performance‐based earthquake engineering methodology, taking account of the uncertainty of regional temperature distribution for temperature‐dependent (TD) structures, where the SMA‐based one is considered as a representative case. As the main part of the methodology, regional seismic fragility is generated by combing temperature distribution properties and joint seismic fragility. The proposed methodology is applied to a six‐story self‐centering concentrically‐braced frame (SC‐CBF) with SMA‐based SC braces located in different regions in China. A simplified thermo‐mechanical model capturing the TD characteristics and possible failure of SMA cables is utilized. Deterministic nonlinear static and dynamic analysis is first conducted to understand the structural response. Then, the joint seismic fragility analysis of the SC‐CBF under different intensity levels of ground motion and temperatures is conducted via the incremental dynamic analysis method, by which the seismic performance of the structure can be fully captured. Finally, the proposed methodology is utilized to comprehensively evaluate the regional seismic fragility and collapse risk of the SC‐CBF in different regions. Thermokarst lakes are distributed widely in permafrost regions on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP), China. Better knowledge of ground thermal variability beneath and around thermokarst lakes is important for understanding future landscape development and hydrological changes. At a typical undisturbed small, shallow, alpine thermokarst lake in the Beiluhe Basin on the QTP, ground temperatures beneath and adjacent to the lake were monitored at four locations with maximum 30 m depth from the lake center to natural ground. The lake is elliptical with an area of ~700 m2 and maximum water depth of 0.6 m. Permafrost was present beneath and adjacent to the lake during the monitoring period. However, supra‐taliks were present above the permafrost table beneath the lake before monitoring of ground temperature began, but were absent around the lake. The supra‐permafrost taliks beneath the lake have thickened over time. The difference in mean permafrost table depth between the lake center and natural ground reached 5.14 m, and permafrost table depths increased beneath the lake, but changed indistinctively around the lake. Mean annual ground temperatures at different depths (5, 10, 20 and 30 m) were higher beneath the lake than around the lake, and mean increasing rates of ground temperature were also greater beneath the lake than around the lake. • A numerical model is proposed and validated to predict ground temperature profiles. • Three typical meteorological year databases are compared to provide the weather parameters for the numerical model. • Two-harmonic analytical correlation (THAC) with high accuracy is introduced to obtain ground temperature rapidly. • THACs of main cities in two climate regions in China are provided on the standard condition. • THACs of all types of soil can be derived according to the developed universal correction formulas and the standard THACs. The lacking of ground temperature measurement data has been preventing the development of underground engineering in China. Therefore, this paper proposed and validated a numerical prediction model that comprehensively considered the effects of short-wave solar radiation, long-wave radiation, latent evaporation energy, heat convection, heat conduction, soil freezing and thawing latent heat on ground temperature. Three frequently-used typical meteorological year databases were used to provide the weather parameters for the numerical model. Comparison of three city cases showed that the model using the "Chinese typical year weather" performed best in accuracy. Moreover, due to the much calculation time required for the numerical model, the two-harmonic analytical correlation (THAC) with higher accuracy than Kusada correlation and Baggs correlation was introduced to obtain ground temperature rapidly. Considering the variety of soil types, the universal correction formulas about the relationship between the THAC coefficients and the soil thermal diffusivity were developed through a series of typical city cases. Simultaneously, THACs of main cities in two climate regions corresponding to soil thermal diffusivity of 8.13*10-2 m2/day were provided as the standard THACs. Located in an arid and semi-arid region, the northern Ordos Basin is one of the key coal mining areas of China. The Zhiluo (J2z) sandstone aquifers, which overlay the Yan'an (J2y) coal seam layer, are a major source of drinking water. However, the hydrochemical evolution and possible impacts of coal mining on pollution of J2z groundwater over recent decades, and the water inrush hazard it presents, are not well understood. In this study, we investigate the groundwater's origins and the factors controlling its quality and hydrochemical characteristics in these areas. In the northern and southern areas, J2z groundwater hydrochemistry shows distinct hydrochemical features, being Ca-HCO3 type with lower total dissolved solids (TDS) in the north, and Na + K-SO4 type with higher TDS in the south. Different water–rock interactions and coal mining activities may be the causes of such differences. We suggest that greater attention should be paid to preventing water inrush events during mining, as J2z groundwater has a good hydraulic connection with shallow groundwater in the northern area. Water treatment is also needed, as J2z groundwater in the southern area exceeds the safe limits for drinking and irrigation. In conclusion, the main factors determining local groundwater hydrochemistry and quality are mining activity, ground temperature, groundwater flow velocity, and groundwater circulation. Land surface temperature (LST) plays a crucial role in the earth system because its heterogeneous spatial distributions can trigger local circulations through land surface‐atmosphere interactions. An accurate simulation of the LST spatial distribution heavily rely on the accuracy of the land surface characteristics, such as LULC (land use/land cover). To investigate the impact of uncertainty in LULC maps on LST simulation, the Community Land Model, version 4.5 (CLM4.5), was used in this study with four LULC products as overlying vegetation characteristics. East China, with its complex land surface characteristics, was employed as the study area. The simulation results were compared to the observations at nine China Meteorological Administration (CMA) stations and to Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer data (MOIDIS_LST) over the whole study region. Based on the comparison at CMA stations, CLM4.5 can properly simulate ground temperature. However, large differences are found between MODIS_LST and the simulated LST, particularly over crop areas. Comparison of simulated results using different LULC products showed a large dissimilarity over forest areas, mainly due to the different identification methods for forest types. Large biases in the prescribed leaf area index (LAI) of the model are also found compared with MODIS_LAI. Then, the LAI in the model default data was replaced by the MODIS_LAI product, which greatly reduces the LST simulation biases. These findings provide insights into improving the simulation of LST and land‐atmosphere interactions in regional weather models or global climate models. Extreme weather is a global challenge due to its severe impact on environment and society. Existing studies focus on specific extreme events or long‐term characteristics of individual indices. Event‐based concept was proposed to more accurately understand features of extreme events and achieve results closer to realistic extreme processes. In this study, the event‐based concept was extended to spatial dimension to simultaneously investigate multiple features in space and time. After homogeneous regions were identified, extreme events in each region were clustered into different types and then subsequent statistical analyses were conducted. The event‐based concept provides further insight into potential driving mechanisms by synoptic features analysis. To evaluate our framework, heatwave in China was chosen as a case study due to its severe impact on socioeconomy and China's complex topography and climate. The results revealed details about the regional features in northwest China and vast spatial extent along the middle and lower Yangtze River. Different heatwave types showed different characteristics in different regions. Severer heatwaves generally had larger magnitude in various features. Synoptic feature analysis revealed that heatwave events in northwest China were influenced by the Iranian Subtropical High and surface temperature advection from the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau. The western Pacific subtropical high impacts the heatwave events in eastern China. The western spread of the subtropical high and cold waves from north spawn and finish heatwaves in Sichuan Basin. The correlation analysis between circulation anomalies at the start of heatwaves and the overall features of events was concluded in the most heat‐impacted region. The thermal environment and microclimate of heritage sites has been severely impacted by rapid urbanization. This study collected various meteorological measurement data as a reference for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation settings. Then CFD was applied to simulate the impact of lawns on the thermal environment and microclimate of Fuling Mausoleum. We found that lawns and soil can cool the air through evaporation, and thus have a specific cooling effect on the bricked ground. Simulations with the lawns, the bricked ground temperature decreased by 1.56–17.54 °C than that simulations without the lawns at 14:00, a decrease of 2.68%–24.20%. Under normal circumstances, when the wind speed or relative humidity increased, the ground temperature dropped. Greenbelt vegetation can adjust the microclimate and human thermal comfort indicators. The consistency of the difference between the actual measurement and the CFD simulation results shows that CFD simulation can thus accurately reflect the internal temperature field distribution if the selection of simulation parameters is reasonable. Theoretical calculation and analysis, experimental measurement research, and modern computer simulation analysis methods applied together constitute a complete system for studying modern physical environmental problems and can provide reliable and economic results. We performed a regional geological survey in discontinuous permafrost (PF) area along the Bei'an to Heihe Expressway between September 2009 and October 2016 to investigate the state and change of PF in northeast China. Underground resistivity changes were periodically detected along the foot of the subgrade and soil temperatures were monitored under the road foundation. We combined local meteorological and average annual air temperature data to analyze changes in PF thickness. The climate data show that the average annual temperature has gradually increased in the study area since 1980, rising to 0 °C around 1990, and the frost number has decreased to less than 0.5 since 1988. The soil temperature results show that the PF temperature in this section is higher than − 1 °C and is in a high-temperature PF zone affected by changes in seasonal air temperature. The PF under the left foot of the subgrade (LPF) and under the road central separation zone of the road (CPF) both show a decreased PF table, increased PF base, and severe PF degradation. Owing to different cover thicknesses, as well as differences in heat transfer between frozen and unfrozen soil, the base of LPF degraded faster than its table, to CPF the opposite is true. Underground resistivity measurements to verify the accuracy of the PF degradation results. The ground temperature monitoring data and climate data show good consistency. • China has abundant SGE resources but the utilization of which remains still low. • SGE is mainly used for building heating and cooling via GSHP technology. • Energy efficiencies of GSHP systems are generally not high in China. • Some measures can be considered to enhance the utilization efficiency of SGE. • AI technology will be a significant measure for SGE resource evaluation. This paper summarized the shallow geothermal resources within a depth of 200 m in China. This geothermal resource is divided into five regions based on the geological structures, geomorphology, geology, and hydrogeology. The recoverable amount of shallow geothermal energy (SGE) is equivalent to 7 × 1012 kg of standard coal in a survey area of 1.69 × 105 km2, 60% of which is distributed in the mid-eastern region of China. SGE is mainly used for building heating and cooling via ground source heat pump (GSHP) technology since 1990s. The coefficient of performance (COPs) of the GSHP system exhibits large regional differences, and the energy utilizing efficiencies of GSHP systems are not high. The utilization rate of SGE is still low compared with those of other forms of renewable energy. Some measures, including a standardized and simplified management system, a feasible evaluation and utilization plan, modified technology and standards, an intelligence environmental impact assessment, and intelligence monitoring, can be considered to enhance the utilization efficiency of SGE. Land surface temperature (LST) is a key variable for high temperature and drought monitoring and climate and ecological environment research. Due to the sparse distribution of ground observation stations, thermal infrared remote sensing technology has become an important means of quickly obtaining ground temperature over large areas. However, there are many missing and low-quality values in satellite-based LST data because clouds cover more than 60 % of the global surface every day. This article presents a unique LST dataset with a monthly temporal resolution for China from 2003 to 2017 that makes full use of the advantages of MODIS data and meteorological station data to overcome the defects of cloud influence via a reconstruction model. We specifically describe the reconstruction model, which uses a combination of MODIS daily data, monthly data and meteorological station data to reconstruct the LST in areas with cloud coverage and for grid cells with elevated LST error, and the data performance is then further improved by establishing a regression analysis model. The validation indicates that the new LST dataset is highly consistent with in situ observations. For the six natural subregions with different climatic conditions in China, verification using ground observation data shows that the root mean square error (RMSE) ranges from 1.24 to 1.58 ∘ C, the mean absolute error (MAE) varies from 1.23 to 1.37 ∘ C and the Pearson coefficient (R2) ranges from 0.93 to 0.99. The new dataset adequately captures the spatiotemporal variations in LST at annual, seasonal and monthly scales. From 2003 to 2017, the overall annual mean LST in China showed a weak increase. Moreover, the positive trend was remarkably unevenly distributed across China. The most significant warming occurred in the central and western areas of the Inner Mongolia Plateau in the Northwest Region, and the average annual temperature change is greater than 0.1 K (R>0.71 , P<0.05), and a strong negative trend was observed in some parts of the Northeast Region and South China Region. Seasonally, there was significant warming in western China in winter, which was most pronounced in December. The reconstructed dataset exhibits significant improvements and can be used for the spatiotemporal evaluation of LST in high-temperature and drought-monitoring studies. Taking only the mean value of cover transmittance and cover absorbance would lead to a large error in estimating the thermal performance of a greenhouse. This paper discusses an innovative dynamic energy balance model of a glass greenhouse, incorporating dynamic cover absorbance and transmittance. Different cover absorbances and transmittances for diffuse, beam, and ground-reflected radiation are used. The model primarily comprises nine differential energy conservation equations for indoor air, seven layers of soil, and the greenhouse's cover. Greenhouse temperature trends are acquired by solving the unsteady-state equations with MATLAB. The model was verified using experimental data recorded during three non-continuous periods of 15 days each in northern China (36.08°N, 116.95°E), during which the daily maximum outdoor solar radiation flux intensity fell between 191 and 894 Wm-2, the outdoor air temperature fell between −12.3 °C and 24.5 °C, the ground surface temperature fell between 0.6°C and 44.3 °C, and the indoor air temperature fell between −9.0 °C and 51.8 °C. The estimates agree well with the measurements, suggesting that the dynamic model is valid. The structural functionality of roads and railways in warm permafrost regions is influenced by both physical and mechanical processes at work within the underlying subgrade. This paper uses ten-years worth of monitoring data to examine the thermal regimes and deformation behaviors of three different types of crushed-rock embankments employed in the construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, which is located in a warm permafrost region of the Tibetan Plateau, China. More specifically, the efficiency of U-shaped crushed-rock, crushed-rock revetment, and crushed-rock basement embankments in stabilizing permafrost temperature is evaluated with consideration to the permafrost table, ground temperature, and mean annual ground temperature. Then, deformation laws in the three embankments were analyzed. Finally, deformation characteristics and sources for general subgrade are discussed and summarized on the basis of monitoring data and previous research. Results show the permafrost table of each of the three crushed-rock embankments to be higher than that of the natural ground at all times, and that the underlying permafrost warms with time regardless of the type of embankment employed. The deformation characteristics of general subgrade in permafrost regions are determined to be non-uniform and persistent. Furthermore, U-shaped crushed-rock embankment out-performed both crushed-rock revetment embankment and crushed-rock basement embankment in terms of cooling capacity and ability to weaken the sunny-shady slope effect. Trends in soil temperature are important but rarely reported indicators of climate change. Based on daily air and soil temperatures (depth: 0, 20, 80, and 320 cm) recorded at the Nanchang Weather Station (1961–2018), this study investigated the variation trend, abrupt changes, and years of anomalous annual and seasonal mean air and soil temperatures. The differences and relationships between annual air and soil temperatures were also analyzed. The results showed close correlations between air temperature and soil temperature at different depths. Annual and seasonal mean air and soil temperatures mainly displayed significant trends of increase over the past 58 years, although the rise of the mean air temperature and the mean soil temperature was asymmetric. The rates of increase in air temperature and soil temperature (depth: 0, 20, and 80 cm) were most obvious in spring; the most significant increase in soil temperature at the depth of 320 cm was in summer. Mean soil temperature displayed a decreasing trend with increasing soil depth in both spring and summer. Air temperature was lower than the soil temperature at depths of 0 and 20 cm but higher than the soil temperature at depths of 80 and 320 cm in spring and summer. Mean ground temperature had a rising trend with increasing soil depth in autumn and winter. Air temperature was lower than the soil temperature at all depths in autumn and winter. Years with anomalously low air temperature and soil temperature at depths of 0, 20, 80, and 320 cm were relatively consistent in winter. Years with anomalous air and soil temperatures (depths: 0, 20, and 80 cm) were generally consistent; however, the relationship between air temperature and soil temperature at 320 cm depth was less consistent. In this study, a field temperature test was performed to reveal the insulation effect of the thermal insulation layer installed at lining surface. The thermal insulation layer is made of polyphenolic, and the thickness is 7 cm. According to the test results, the temperature of the thermal insulation layer and lining continuously changes with the air temperature in the tunnel in an approximately trigonometric function. The temperature of tunnel lining without thermal insulation layer is close to the air temperature, which results in the lining frost in winter. The maximum temperature difference between the two sides of the thermal insulation layer can be 27°C. In the section whose buried depth is more than 11.4 m, the temperature of lining with thermal insulation layer in winter is mainly influenced by the cold air in the tunnel. When the monthly mean and lowest daily mean air temperature are lower than −10°C and −14.3°C in the coldest month, the temperature at the inner side of the thermal insulation layer is below 0°C. When the buried depth is less than 11.4 m, the temperature of lining is also influenced by the low temperature at ground surface. The temperature of lining is lower. The thicker thermal insulation layer and even active heat measure are needed. Therefore, the design of thermal insulation layer thickness should consider the air temperature distribution and tunnel buried depth along the tunnel length. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
