Abstract

The article looks at health impacts of smog air pollution in China, noting that an eight-year-old girl in Jiangsu was diagnosed with lung cancer attributed to pollution effects. A 2013 report in "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" found that pollution from coal heating emissions reduces life expectancy in northern China by five years. Efforts by the Chinese government to address the issue include closing of schools, roads, and factories in response to high pollution levels.
