Purpose: Given the growth in the use of wearable measuring technology, this study aimed to investigate the frequency of writing about wearable monitoring devices in the field of sports sciences and sports-related health professions during the years affected by the COVID-19 pandemic (2020 to 2022). The goal was to observe the number of studies right before the quarantine and during the first years of pandemic. Methodology: A systematic literature analysis was performed in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS CC) and Scopus databases in March 2023. The filters used in the search were the following: original scientific papers in the English language and open access. The research field was sports sciences in the past three years (2020–2022) in the Wos CC, and health professions and medicine in Scopus. Results: The initial search resulted in 54 studies in the WoS, 16 of which were included in a detailed qualitative analysis, and 297 studies in Scopus with 19 of them analyzed (35 altogether). The keywords used were "fitness watch" (sport watch, smartwatch), "smart shoes", "smart clothing", "smart ring", "smart belt", and "smart glasses". In the past three years, there has been a steady increase in the number of studies using smart monitoring devices to measure their data (nine in 2020, nine in 2021, and seventeen in 2022). Results showed that the most used device is a smartwatch, while the most carried out studies were about physical activity and daily activities of living. Furthermore, there are more studies about measuring devices being used as testing equipment than about device performance in general. Conclusions: This study summarizes various research conducted in the field of sports with the use of wearable measuring devices to determine the frequency of use of such devices in sport studies. In this paper, we propose a daily living situation where objects in a kitchen can be grasped and stored in specific containers using a virtual robot arm operated by different myoelectric control modes. The main goal of this study is to prove the feasibility of providing virtual environments controlled through surface electromyography that can be used for the future training of people using prosthetics or with upper limb motor impairments. We propose that simple control algorithms can be a more natural and robust way to interact with prostheses and assistive robotics in general than complex multipurpose machine learning approaches. Additionally, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of adding intelligence to the setup to automatically assist grasping activities. Aim: The aim of this scoping review was to summarise findings concerning cognitive characteristics in people with spina bifida and explain how cognitive factors influence activities and participation in different areas and stages of life. Methods: PubMed, Psych INFO, ERIC, Scopus, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library were searched for English language papers published in 2000–2018. A total of 92 papers were selected and quality was assessed according to the McMaster criteria. The results were presented related to body functions, activity and participation from the International Classification of Function and Health, ICF. Results: People with spina bifida tended to have a lower IQ than those without. The majority also had cognitive difficulties manifested in problems with language, perception, memory, executive and attentional functions. Those difficulties affected activity and participation in all life domains in ICF. This may affect medical adherence and responsibility and by extension the prevention of secondary complications. Conclusion: It is important for caregivers, professionals and especially individuals with spina bifida themselves to understand and handle both physical and cognitive consequences in all life circumstances. As the world population is ageing rapidly and old age comes with multiple health issues, the need for medical services is likely to increase in a couple of decades beyond the limits of the medical systems of almost any country. In response to this trend, a variety of technologies have been developed with the aim of helping older people live independently as long as possible and reduce the burden on caregivers. In this paper, we propose a solution to encode the information about the activity of the monitored person, captured by a set of binary sensors, in the form of activity maps that reflect not only the intensity, but also the spatial distribution of the activity between a set of behaviorally meaningful places. Then, we propose a method for automatic analysis of the activity maps in order to detect deviations from the previously recorded routine. We have tested the method on two public activity recognition datasets and found that the proposed solution is not only feasible, but also has several important advantages (it is low cost, scalable, adaptable, requires little expert knowledge for setup and protects the privacy of the monitored persons) that make it applicable on a large scale, including for people with low socio-economic status. Wearable devices play an increasing role in the rehabilitation of patients with movement disorders. Although information about muscular activation is highly interesting, no approach exists that allows reliable collection of this information when the sensor is applied autonomously by the patient. This paper aims to demonstrate the proof-of-principle of an innovative sEMG sensor system, which can be used intuitively by patients while detecting their muscular activation with sufficient accuracy. The sEMG sensor system utilizes a multichannel approach based on 16 sEMG leads arranged circularly around the limb. Its design enables a stable contact between the skin surface and the system's dry electrodes, fulfills the SENIAM recommendations regarding the electrode size and inter-electrode distance and facilitates a high temporal resolution. The proof-of-principle was demonstrated by elbow flexion/extension movements of 10 subjects, proving that it has root mean square values and a signal-to-noise ratio comparable to commercial systems based on pre-gelled electrodes. Furthermore, it can be easily placed and removed by patients with reduced arm function and without detailed knowledge about the exact positioning of the sEMG electrodes. With its features, the demonstration of the sEMG sensor system's proof-of-principle positions it as a wearable device that has the potential to monitor muscular activation in home and community settings. People with tetraplegia are often lacking grip strength, causing impairment in activities of daily living. For them, improving hand function is a priority because it is important for autonomy and participation in daily life. A tendon transfer surgery may be an option to improve the tenodesis grip, but it is an invasive procedure. Alternatively a similar effect can be produced, using a non-invasive method. We have previously described how myoelectrically controlled functional electrical stimulation (MeCFES) can be efficient for enhancing grip strength, using a one channel research prototype with wired connections to surface electrodes. In this paper we focus on the usability for activities of daily living and how it can fulfill an actual need. We recruited 27 participants with a cervical spinal cord lesion (C5-C7) for this trial. They tested the device in 12 sessions of 2 h each, in which the participants performed self selected activities involving the tenodesis grip. User centered outcomes were validated questionnaires: the Individually Prioritized Problem Assessment (IPPA) and the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology (QUEST). Furthermore, they were asked if they found the device useful for continued use in daily life. The device facilitated prioritized activities for all participants. The IPPA change score was 4.6 on average (STD:3.5, effect size:1.3), meaning that the system greatly facilitated problematic tasks and the large effect size evinces that this was a meaningful improvement of hand function. It compares to the impact that a mobility device like a wheelchair has on daily living. Fourteen subjects found the system useful, expressing the need for such a neuroprosthesis. Examples of acquiring new abilities while using the device, indicate that the method could have a therapeutic use as well. Furthermore, results from the IPPA questionnaire are indicating what issues people with tetraplegia may hope to solve with a neuroprosthesis for the hand. Purpose – This paper aims to focus on applying a range of traditional classification- and semantic reasoning-based techniques to recognise activities of daily life (ADLs). ADL recognition plays an important role in tracking functional decline among elderly people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Accurate recognition enables smart environments to support and assist the elderly to lead an independent life for as long as possible. However, the ability to represent the complex structure of an ADL in a flexible manner remains a challenge. Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents an ADL recognition approach, which uses a hierarchical structure for the representation and modelling of the activities, its associated tasks and their relationships. This study describes an approach in constructing ADLs based on a task-specific and intention-oriented plan representation language called Asbru. The proposed method is particularly flexible and adaptable for caregivers to be able to model daily schedules for Alzheimer’s patients. Findings – A proof of concept prototype evaluation has been conducted for the validation of the proposed ADL recognition engine, which has comparable recognition results with existing ADL recognition approaches. Originality/value – The work presented in this paper is novel, as the developed ADL recognition approach takes into account all relationships and dependencies within the modelled ADLs. Life activities profoundly influence well-being, mental health, and quality of life. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the importance of monitoring these activities for psychological and emotional health. However, existing measurement tools are limited, particularly for assessing psychological health. To address this gap, we developed and validated the Core Life Activities (CORE) scale, comprising five key factors (sleep, exercise, learning, diet, and social relationships) identified in neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and gerontology. In Study 1 (n = 1,137), exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a single-factor structure with good model fit (χ² = 6.377, df = 3, TLI = 0.992, CFI = 0.998, RMSEA = 0.031), demonstrating robust internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.776) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.522, p < 0.001). The CORE exhibited significant convergent validity with mental health screening tools for depressive and anxiety disorders and suicidality. Study 2 (n = 684) confirmed a significant correlation between CORE and the World Health Organisation Quality of Life Brief Version, complementing the convergent validity found in Study 1. In addition, discriminant validity was confirmed by a non-significant correlation with the COVID-19 Preventive Behavior Scale. The findings establish the CORE as a reliable and valid tool, offering a simple yet comprehensive measure for assessing core life activities with potential applications in diverse environments. Introduction. This study aimed to test how normal physical treatment, with or without home-based intense bimanual training, affected hand coordination and daily living activities in children with cerebral palsy. Methods. A randomised controlled experiment was carried out at DHQ Hospital in Kasur, Pakistan. Thirty children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy took part in the study. The first group received standard physical treatment, whereas the second group received bimanual training along with routine physical therapy. Follow-ups were performed in the fourth and sixth weeks. The paediatric motor log activity scale and the ABILHAND questionnaire were used to assess daily activities and coordination, respectively. Results. At baseline, no significant association was seen between treatment groups and hand coordination outcome among the patients (p = 0.0450) and no significant difference was seen in patients in both treatment groups regarding their activities of daily living. In group A, no significant improvement was seen in hand coordination from baseline until the 6th week (p = 0.257) while in group B, a significant difference was seen in hand coordination from baseline until the 6th week follow-up (p = 0.000). Conclusions. This study concluded that the combined effect of home-based bimanual exercises and routine physical therapy shows significant achievements in hand coordination and activities of daily living. The criterion validity was assessed via its link with perceived stress, sleep quality, daily life activities, and demographic and medical characteristics. Methods: A total of 328 COVID-19 patients (55.8% men; Mage =50.49, SD=14.96) completed the GHQ-12, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Activities of Daily Life (ADL)-Katz Scale, and the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (IADL). Results: Among 13 factorial models, the three-factor model (successful coping, self-esteem, and stress) was shown to have the best fit. GHQ-12 was positively associated with PSQI, PSS, Hyperlipidemia, psychiatry disorders, hospitalization duration, the change in sleep time, and use of sleeping pills, and negatively correlated with educational level, and the number of family members. The GHQ-12 also had a negative correlation with ADL and IADL in over 60 years of age group. Females scored higher on total GHQ-12 scores, compared to males. Finally, the hospitalization duration was longer for patients over 60 (mean=8.8 days, SD=5.9) than patients under 60 (mean = 6.35 days, SD=5.87). Discussion: Overall, the findings provided evidence that mental distress in patients with COVID-19 is correlated with high perceived stress, low sleep quality, low ADL and IADL, and a range of demographic features and medical conditions. A theoretical extension of the concept of energy through an empirical study This paper extends the concept of energy as a multifaceted concept of the experience of energy and proposes a theoretical model regarding the understanding of the experience of energy. The hybrid model of concept development (Schwartz-Barcott and Kim, 2000) was used in a qualitative empirical study with a sample of athletes and chronically ill individuals. The concept of energy presented is a global concept and can be placed within the much-discussed concept of fatigue. Focusing on energy implicates a resource approach to individuals experiencing fatigue. A theoretical model for the experience of energy emerging from this study includes the subconcepts of the feeling of energy, perceived energy capacity, energy management, and performance of activities. Two sets of strategies within the concept of energy management are identified as energy economizing and energy generating. This article explores the potential of the concept of energy in describing fatigue as a health problem. Implications for clinical practice and further theoretical development are suggested. Background: With an aging population, it is essential to maintain good health and autonomy for as long as possible. Instead of hospitalisation or institutionalisation, older people with chronic conditions can be assisted in their own home with numerous "smart" devices that support them in their activities of daily living, manage their medical conditions, and prevent fall incidents. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions facilitate the monitoring and management of older people's health to improve quality of life and physical activity with a decline in caregivers' burden. Method: The aim of this paper was to conduct a systematic literature review to analyse the state of the art of ICT solutions for older people with chronic conditions, and the impact of these solutions on their quality of life from a biomedical perspective. Results: By analysing the literature on the available ICT proposals, it is shown that different approaches have been deployed by noticing that the more cross-interventions are merged then the better the results are, but there is still no evidence of the effects of ICT solutions on older people's health outcomes. Furthermore, there are still unresolved ethical and legal issues. Conclusion: While there has been much research and development in healthcare ICT solutions for the aging population, ICT solutions still need significant development in order to be user-oriented, affordable, and to manage chronic conditions in the aging wider population. The potential application of using a wearable force myography (FMG) band for monitoring the occupational safety of a human participant working in collaboration with an industrial robot was studied. Regular physical human–robot interactions were considered as activities of daily life in pHRI (pHRI-ADL) to recognize human-intended motions during such interactions. The force myography technique was used to read volumetric changes in muscle movements while a human participant interacted with a robot. Data-driven models were used to observe human activities for useful insights. Using three unsupervised learning algorithms, isolation forest, one-class SVM, and Mahalanobis distance, models were trained to determine pHRI-ADL/regular, preset activities by learning the latent features' distributions. The trained models were evaluated separately to recognize any unwanted interactions that differed from the normal activities, i.e., anomalies that were novel, inliers, or outliers to the normal distributions. The models were able to detect unusual, novel movements during a certain scenario that was considered an unsafe interaction. Once a safety hazard was detected, the control system generated a warning signal within seconds of the event. Hence, this study showed the viability of using FMG biofeedback to indicate risky interactions to prevent injuries, improve occupational health, and monitor safety in workplaces that require human participation. This paper addresses wearable-based recognition of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) which are composed of several repetitive and concurrent short movements having temporal dependencies. It is improbable to directly use sensor data to recognize these long-term composite activities because two examples (data sequences) of the same ADL result in largely diverse sensory data. However, they may be similar in terms of more semantic and meaningful short-term atomic actions. Therefore, we propose a two-level hierarchical model for recognition of ADLs. Firstly, atomic activities are detected and their probabilistic scores are generated at the lower level. Secondly, we deal with the temporal transitions of atomic activities using a temporal pooling method, rank pooling. This enables us to encode the ordering of probabilistic scores for atomic activities at the higher level of our model. Rank pooling leads to a 5–13% improvement in results as compared to the other popularly used techniques. We also produce a large dataset of 61 atomic and 7 composite activities for our experiments. Falls are a significant cause of loss of independence, disability and reduced quality of life in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Intervening quickly and accurately on the postural instability could strongly reduce the consequences of falls. In this context, the paper proposes and validates a novel architecture for the reliable recognition of losses of balance situations. The proposed system addresses some challenges related to the daily life applicability of near-fall recognition systems: the high specificity and system robustness against the Activities of Daily Life (ADL). In this respect, the proposed algorithm has been tested on five different tasks: walking steps, sudden curves, chair transfers via the timed up and go (TUG) test, balance-challenging obstacle avoidance and slip-induced loss of balance. The system analyzes data from wireless acquisition devices that capture electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) signals. The collected data are sent to two main units: the muscular unit and the cortical one. The first realizes a binary ON/OFF pattern from muscular activity (10 EMGs) and triggers the cortical unit. This latter unit evaluates the rate of variation in the EEG power spectrum density (PSD), considering five bands of interest. The neuromuscular features are then sent to a logical network for the final classification, which distinguishes among falls and ADL. In this preliminary study, we tested the proposed model on 9 healthy subjects (aged 26.3 ± 2.4 years), even if the study on PD patients is under investigation. Experimental validation on healthy subjects showed that the system reacts in 370.62 ± 60.85 ms with a sensitivity of 93.33 ± 5.16%. During the ADL tests the system showed a specificity of 98.91 ± 0.44% in steady walking steps recognition, 99.61 ± 0.66% in sudden curves detection, 98.95 ± 1.27% in contractions related to TUG tests and 98.42 ± 0.90% in the obstacle avoidance protocol. Accidental falls frequently occur during activities of daily living. Although many studies have proposed various accident detection methods, no high‐performance accident detection system is available. In this study, we propose a method for integrating data and accident detection algorithms presented in existing studies, collect new data (from two stunt performers and 15 people over age 60) using a developed wearable device, demonstrate new features and related accident detection algorithms, and analyze the performance of the proposed method against existing methods. Comparative analysis results show that the newly defined features extracted reflect more important risk factors than those used in existing studies. Further, although the traditional algorithms applied to integrated data achieved an accuracy (AC) of 79.5% and a false positive rate (FPR) of 19.4%, the proposed accident detection algorithms achieved 97.8% AC and 2.9% FPR. The high AC and low FPR for accidental falls indicate that the proposed method exhibits a considerable advancement toward developing a commercial accident detection system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose in this paper a novel architecture for human activity monitoring, following conceptual, technical and experimental claims. From a conceptual viewpoint, we propose to approach the interpretation of sensor data as embedded into a multidimensional frame involving functional and non-functional requirements. Functional requirements involve considering the monitored person's specificities as well as the task to be performed. Non-functional requirements qualify the system activity. This frame of interpretation is continuously refined, to cope with evolving situations or expectations from the Observer. From a technical viewpoint, we propose to develop a multi-Agent architecture as a means for dependable, flexible monitoring. This paradigm allows to handle multiple, heterogeneous entities in a unified way. The Agents process incoming data with a dynamic population of hypotheses on several abstraction levels. This reasoning is abductive and fuzzy in nature. From the experimental viewpoint, we propose a dedicated evaluation approach to estimate the interpretative process unfolding. Functional and non-functional properties are presented to discuss the system's effectiveness, informativeness, sensitivity, efficiency and robustness, some of which are supported by qualitative, analytical discussions, others by quantitative measures. Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have difficulties with occupational performance, related to difficulties with time-processing ability. To examine the outcome of a multimodal time-related intervention designed to support children aged 9–15 years with ADHD, to achieve their occupational performance goals and improve satisfaction with occupational performance. A further aim was to compare the children's ratings of outcome with their parents' ratings and to analyse the occupational performance goals. A pre-post design was used. Participants were 27 children, aged 9–15 years. Children and parents rated occupational performance and satisfaction at baseline and follow-up, after 24 weeks, using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). The intervention consisted of time-skills training and time-assistive devices (TADs). Descriptive and non-parametric statistics were used. Significant improvements were found in reported performance and satisfaction. Children's were higher than those of their parents. Most goals were about carrying out daily routines, knowing the duration of an activity and knowing what will happen in the near future. The study contributes to knowledge about suitable interventions for children with ADHD who have time-related difficulties. Occupational therapy interventions, including TADs and time-skills training, resulted in significantly improved occupational performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The IPPA change score was 4.6 on average (STD:3.5, effect size:1.3), meaning that the system greatly facilitated problematic tasks and the large effect size evinces that this was a meaningful improvement of hand function. It compares to the impact that a mobility device like a wheelchair has on daily living. Fourteen subjects found the system useful, expressing the need for such a neuroprosthesis. Examples of acquiring new abilities while using the device, indicate that the method could have a therapeutic use as well. Furthermore, results from the IPPA questionnaire are indicating what issues people with tetraplegia may hope to solve with a neuroprosthesis for the hand. The satisfaction of the device (QUEST) indicates that further effort in development should address wearability, eliminate wires, and improve the fitting procedure.

As the world population is ageing rapidly and old age comes with multiple health issues, the need for medical services is likely to increase in a couple of decades beyond the limits of the medical systems of almost any country. In response to this trend, a variety of technologies have been developed with the aim of helping older people live independently as long as possible and reduce the burden on caregivers. In this paper, we propose a solution to encode the information about the activity of the monitored person, captured by a set of binary sensors, in the form of activity maps that reflect not only the intensity, but also the spatial distribution of the activity between a set of behaviorally meaningful places. Then, we propose a method for automatic analysis of the activity maps in order to detect deviations from the previously recorded routine. We have tested the method on two public activity recognition datasets and found that the proposed solution is not only feasible, but also has several important advantages (it is low cost, scalable, adaptable, requires little expert knowledge for setup and protects the privacy of the monitored persons) that make it applicable on a large scale, including for people with low socio-economic status.

Background: With an aging population, it is essential to maintain good health and autonomy for as long as possible. Instead of hospitalisation or institutionalisation, older people with chronic conditions can be assisted in their own home with numerous “smart” devices that support them in their activities of daily living, manage their medical conditions, and prevent fall incidents. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions facilitate the monitoring and management of older people’s health to improve quality of life and physical activity with a decline in caregivers’ burden. Method: The aim of this paper was to conduct a systematic literature review to analyse the state of the art of ICT solutions for older people with chronic conditions, and the impact of these solutions on their quality of life from a biomedical perspective. Results: By analysing the literature on the available ICT proposals, it is shown that different approaches have been deployed by noticing that the more cross-interventions are merged then the better the results are, but there is still no evidence of the effects of ICT solutions on older people’s health outcomes. Furthermore, there are still unresolved ethical and legal issues. Conclusion: While there has been much research and development in healthcare ICT solutions for the aging population, ICT solutions still need significant development in order to be user-oriented, affordable, and to manage chronic conditions in the aging wider population.

This paper addresses wearable-based recognition of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) which are composed of several repetitive and concurrent short movements having temporal dependencies. It is improbable to directly use sensor data to recognize these long-term composite activities because two examples (data sequences) of the same ADL result in largely diverse sensory data. However, they may be similar in terms of more semantic and meaningful short-term atomic actions. Therefore, we propose a two-level hierarchical model for recognition of ADLs. Firstly, atomic activities are detected and their probabilistic scores are generated at the lower level. Secondly, we deal with the temporal transitions of atomic activities using a temporal pooling method, rank pooling. This enables us to encode the ordering of probabilistic scores for atomic activities at the higher level of our model. Rank pooling leads to a 5–13% improvement in results as compared to the other popularly used techniques. We also produce a large dataset of 61 atomic and 7 composite activities for our experiments.

Falls are a significant cause of loss of independence, disability and reduced quality of life in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Intervening quickly and accurately on the postural instability could strongly reduce the consequences of falls. In this context, the paper proposes and validates a novel architecture for the reliable recognition of losses of balance situations. The proposed system addresses some challenges related to the daily life applicability of near-fall recognition systems: the high specificity and system robustness against the Activities of Daily Life (ADL). In this respect, the proposed algorithm has been tested on five different tasks: walking steps, sudden curves, chair transfers via the timed up and go (TUG) test, balance-challenging obstacle avoidance and slip-induced loss of balance. The system analyzes data from wireless acquisition devices that capture electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) signals. The collected data are sent to two main units: the muscular unit and the cortical one. The first realizes a binary ON/OFF pattern from muscular activity (10 EMGs) and triggers the cortical unit. This latter unit evaluates the rate of variation in the EEG power spectrum density (PSD), considering five bands of interest. The neuromuscular features are then sent to a logical network for the final classification, which distinguishes among falls and ADL. In this preliminary study, we tested the proposed model on 9 healthy subjects (aged 26.3 ± 2.4 years), even if the study on PD patients is under investigation. Experimental validation on healthy subjects showed that the system reacts in 370.62 ± 60.85 ms with a sensitivity of 93.33 ± 5.16%. During the ADL tests the system showed a specificity of 98.91 ± 0.44% in steady walking steps recognition, 99.61 ± 0.66% in sudden curves detection, 98.95 ± 1.27% in contractions related to TUG tests and 98.42 ± 0.90% in the obstacle avoidance protocol.

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to examine whether a specific guided programme of aerobic exercise together with mindfulness could have an effect on estimated health status and occupational performance in individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI). As secondary outcomes, the effects on health-related quality of life, cognition and mental fatigue were analysed. Methods:The study included individuals with mild to moderate ABI (n = 21) with residual cognitive impairments. Guided interventions were given three times per week for 12 weeks. Neuropsychological and physical tests as well as patient-reported outcome measures were used as outcomes. Results:Estimated health status, self-reported occupational performance as well as satisfaction with performance improved together with physical capacity. Improvements in cognitive functions were related to attention and information processing speed; in addition, self-reported mental fatigue was reduced after the intervention. Cognitive function related to working memory and health-related quality of life were not affected. Conclusions:Support to improve physical capacity combined with practicing mindfulness, bringing attention to the present moment, seems to have a positive impact on occupational performance, estimated health status, attention and information processing speed as well as mental fatigue in individuals with cognitive dysfunction after ABI. Background: Functional evaluation of sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit activities is often used by physiotherapists in patients with neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. The observation of the way these activities are executed is essential in identifying kinesiological problems. There are different methodologies used to describe the stand-to-sit activity and its evaluation is not yet standardized, which makes the practical application of resources on clinical observation difficult. The objective of this study is to automate the decision making process of an evaluation protocol, developed in previous study, and facilitate its utilization by professionals in the area. Methods: A decision-making system has been implemented through a computational tool, more specifically an Expert System that due its inherent characteristics emulates the decision-making process of a human expert in the domain area. A Shell called Expert Sinta was used to develop two knowledge bases, i.e. two expert systems, one for the anterior view and another for the lateral view of stand-to-sit activity. Variables, values, associated rules and confidence factors, objectives, and additional information questions were defined by the expert of domain and once implemented each expert system generates a number of questions to its user. These questions serve as a guide to physiotherapists and support the standardization of the activity evaluation. The developed systems were evaluated by physiotherapists through the application of a questionnaire that evaluates the knowledge base and the usability of the system. The physiotherapists’ answers were then evaluated through statistical estimation and percentage analysis. Results: When asked about the systems’ “utility for clinical practice of the physiotherapist”, 67% of evaluators answered positively. An interesting finding was that most physiotherapists (i.e. 92%) considered that the systems are suitable for educational purposes, which was not the main objective of this study. Conclusions: The developed expert systems can support the physiotherapist in evaluating stand-to-sit activity through a conclusion suggestion about the “level of inadequacy” for the “degree of inadequacy” searched during its execution. Results of experts’ evaluation analyzed through statistical methods indicate that the automation of protocols contributed to the standardization of the evaluation of stand-to-sit activity and that it has application for teaching purposes. Purpose: To describe patterns of prosthesis wear and perceived prosthetic usefulness in adult acquired upper-limb amputees (ULAs). To describe prosthetic skills in activities of daily life (ADL) and the actual use of prostheses in the performance of ADL tasks. To estimate the influence of prosthetic skills on actual prosthesis use and the influence of background factors on prosthetic skills and actual prosthesis use. Method: Cross-sectional study analysing population-based questionnaire data (n = 224) and data from interviews and clinical testing in a referred/convenience sample of prosthesis-wearing ULAs (n = 50). Effects were analysed using linear regression. Results: 80.8% wore prostheses. 90.3% reported their most worn prosthesis as useful. Prosthetic usefulness profiles varied with prosthetic type. Despite demonstrating good prosthetic skills, the amputees reported actual prosthesis use in only about half of the ADL tasks performed in everyday life. In unilateral amputees, increased actual use was associated with sufficient prosthetic training and with the use of myoelectric vs cosmetic prostheses, regardless of amputation level. Prosthetic skills did not affect actual prosthesis use. No background factors showed significant effect on prosthetic skills. Conclusions: Most major ULAs wear prostheses. Individualised prosthetic training and fitting of myoelectric rather than passive prostheses may increase actual prosthesis use in ADL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the number of proposed fall-detection systems that have been developed has increased dramatically. A threshold-based algorithm utilizing an accelerometer has been used to detect low-complexity falling activities. In this study, we defined activities in which the body's center of gravity quickly declines as falling activities of daily life (ADLs). In the non-falling ADLs, we also focused on the body's center of gravity. A hyperplane of the support vector machine (SVM) was used as the separating plane to replace the traditional threshold method for the detection of falling ADLs. The scripted and continuous unscripted activities were performed by two groups of young volunteers (20 subjects) and one group of elderly volunteers (five subjects). The results showed that the four parameters of the input vector had the best accuracy with 99.1% and 98.4% in the training and testing, respectively. For the continuous unscripted test of one hour, there were two and one false positive events among young volunteers and elderly volunteers, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims and objectives. To explore first-time stroke patients' degree of independence in activities of daily life in relation to sleep and other essential variables that might influence activities of daily life. Background. Sleep has received little attention in rehabilitation of activities of daily life in stroke patients. Design. This is a longitudinal survey and observational study design from the acute phase to six months poststroke. Methods. First-time stroke patients ( n = 90) were recruited from two hospitals in eastern Norway in 2007 and 2008. Data were collected by survey interview, medical records and wrist actigraphy in the first two weeks at the hospital and at six months of follow-up. Actigraph measures patient activity and estimates sleep during the day and night. Results. Linear regression showed that high dependence in personal activities of daily living was directly related to low estimated sleep time at night and higher estimated sleep during the day in the acute phase, controlling for socio-demographic and clinical variables. Furthermore, high estimated numbers of awakenings in the acute phase were related to lower activities of daily life functioning at six months of follow-up after controlling for socio-demographic and clinical variables. Stronger pain and a lower physical functioning showed direct relationships with lower independency level of in activities of daily life both in the acute phase and after six months. Conclusions. Sleep patterns in the acute phase may influence the patients' activities of daily life functioning up to six months poststroke. Furthermore, pain in the acute phase may influence the level of activities of daily life functioning in stroke patients. Relevance to clinical practice. Nurses should pay attention to stroke patients' sleep quality and pain in the rehabilitation period after a stroke. The aim was to learn how frail elderly people experienced becoming assistive device users and how assistive devices affected their independence in daily activities. Focus-group methodology was used, including people 80 and older with multiple health problems. Five group discussions were conducted with a total of 18 people including 14 women and four men. Each group met once, for 90-120 minutes, and all discussions were audiotaped. Two themes emerged: Confidence in knowledge and experience and getting used to assistive devices in daily activities. Confidence in knowledge and experience was formed by two categories of experiences from the prescription procedure: trust the expert and trust yourself, and to have confidence in having the right information about assistive devices. Getting used to assistive devices in daily activities was formed by five categories of ambivalent experiences when using assistive devices in daily activities: creates opportunities and limitations; provides security but also raises concerns; the need is seen as transient or permanent; the social environment both encourages and restricts; the physical environment both facilitates and complicates, with less extreme experiences in between. This study indicates that frail elderly people need specifically developed support in the process of becoming assistive device users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to evaluate a high intensive exercise program in stroke subjects with risk of falls regarding balance, activities of daily life, falls efficacy, number of falls and lifestyle activities. The intervention program contained high intensity functional exercises (HIFE) implemented to real-life situations together with education on falls and security aspects. This was a single-center, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial. Consecutive >55-year-old patients with risk of falls were enrolled and randomized 3–6 months after first or recurrent stroke to the intervention group (IG, n=15) or to the control group (CG, n=19) who received group discussions about hidden dysfunctions after stroke. Outcomes were Berg Balance Scale (BBS) primarily, Barthel Index (BI), Falls Efficacy Scale – International (FES-I) and number of falls secondarily and Frenchay Activities Index last 3 months (FAI-3) tertially. Assessments were done at baseline, post-intervention, 3- and 6-month follow-up by two physiotherapists and one nurse blinded to group allocation. Generalized Estimating Equations with Repeated-measure statistics were used to analyze the data. There were no significant differences between the IG and the CG regarding balance (BBS). BI at 6 months and FES-I post-intervention and 3 months follow-up showed significant improvement in the IG compared with the CG ( p<0.05). Number of falls and FAI-3 were without significant change. This study suggests that our program consisting of HIFE implemented in real-life situations together with educational discussions may improve performance of everyday life activities and improve falls efficacy in stroke subjects with risk of falls. This ethnographic study aims to identify and describe how a group of elderly African people in South Africa experience their daily life and related concerns and interests. Data were collected through group interviews involving 16 elderly persons and complementary field observations. The data were analysed using a qualitative content analysis. From the analysis following sub-themes emerged: 1. Lack of basic resources; 2. Routines in daily life; 3. Experience of unsafe conditions; 4. “The disease”—HIV/AIDS. The results have been discussed according to the following themes: keeping normality and changing society. The study illuminates the varied experiences in daily life, including lack of basic resources, experience of unsafe conditions, and the HIV/AIDS pandemic and its consequences for the elderly as contributors to the extended family.
