Nonlocal strain gradient models are being used more and more extensively in examining the size-dependent effects on the statical and dynamical behaviors of micro/nano-structures. However, for the fake of simplification, the size-dependent effects are often assumed to be neglected in the thickness direction of beams and plates. This simplification is originally aiming at reducing the complexity of the studied beam and plate problems while retaining all the most important mechanical features. Based on the nonlocal strain gradient model without the thickness effect, the size-dependent effect may reveal stiffness-softening or stiffness-hardening effect, which only depends on the values of strain-gradient and stress-gradient parameters but is independent on the geometric feature. In this paper, a nonlocal strain gradient beam model incorporating the thickness effect is developed for the size-dependent buckling analysis of nanobeams, and closed-form solutions are derived for post-buckling configuration and critical buckling force. When incorporating the size-dependent effect of thickness, it is found that the stiffness-softening and stiffness-hardening effects depend not only on the ratio of stress-gradient parameter to strain-gradient parameter, but also on the geometric feature (slenderness ratio). Interestingly, the stiffness-softening effect can be only found for the longitudinal dispersion relation of Silicon, while the stiffness-hardening effect may be observed for the buckling behaviors of nanobeams made of Silicon due to the size-dependent effect of thickness. In present paper, a unified size-dependent high-order beam model which contains various higher-order shear deformation beam models as well as Euler–Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam models is developed to study the simultaneous effects of nonlocal stress and strain gradient on the bending and buckling behaviors of nanobeams by using the nonlocal strain gradient theory. For this objective, a nonlocal parameter is introduced to capture the nonlocal effect and a material length scale parameter is involved to evaluate the strain gradient effect. The governing equations and the associated boundary conditions are formulated by using Hamilton's principle. Navier's method is utilized to obtain the analytical solutions for bending and buckling of a simply supported nanobeam. The present model is validated by comparing the obtained results with those available in literature. The influences of nonlocal parameter, material length scale parameter, slenderness ratio and shear deformation on the bending and buckling behaviors of the nanobeam are examined in detail. Results reveal that within the framework of nonlocal strain gradient theory, results predicted by Timoshenko beam model and various higher-order beam models are almost same with some negligible differences. Moreover, it is found that the nanobeam could exhibit either stiffness-softening effect or stiffness-hardening effect, which depends on the relative magnitude of the nonlocal parameter and the material length scale parameter. Abstract: This paper presents a nonlocal sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory for the bending, buckling, and vibration of nanobeams. The present model is capable of capturing both small scale effect and transverse shear deformation effects of nanobeams, and does not require shear correction factors. Based on the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen, the equations of motion as well as the boundary conditions of the beam are derived using Hamilton’s principle. Analytical solutions for the deflection, buckling load, and natural frequency are presented for a simply supported beam, and the obtained results are compared with those predicted by the nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory. The comparison firmly establishes that the present beam theory can accurately predict the bending, buckling, and vibration responses of short nanobeams where the small scale and transverse shear deformation effects are significant. Abstract: A nonlocal shear deformation beam theory is proposed for bending, buckling, and vibration of nanobeams using the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen. The theory, which does not require shear correction factor, accounts for both small scale effects and quadratic variation of shear strains and consequently shear stresses through the thickness of the beam. In addition, it has strong similarities with nonlocal Euler–Bernoulli beam theory in some aspects such as equations of motion, boundary conditions, and stress resultant expressions. The equations of motion are derived from Hamilton’s principle. Analytical solutions of deflection, buckling load, and natural frequency are presented for a simply supported beam, and the obtained results compare well with those predicted by the nonlocal Timoshenko and Reddy beam theories. The size-dependent buckling instability of shear deformable nanobeams rested on a two-parameter elastic foundation is studied through the stress-driven nonlocal theory of elasticity and the kinematic assumptions of the Timoshenko beam theory. The small-scale size effects are taken into account by nonlocal constitutive relationships, which define the strains at each point as integral convolutions in terms of the stresses in all the points and a kernel. In this manner, the nonlocal elasticity formulation is well-posed and does not include inconsistencies usually arising using other nonlocal models. The size-dependent governing differential equations in terms of the transverse displacement and the cross-sectional rotation are decoupled, and closed form solutions are presented for the displacement functions. Proper boundary conditions are imposed and the buckling problem is reduced to finding roots of a determinant of a matrix, whose elements are given explicitly for different classical edge conditions. The closed form treatment of the problem avoids the numerical instabilities usually occurring within numerical techniques, and allows to find also higher buckling loads and shape modes. Several nanobeams rested on the Winkler or Pasternak elastic foundations and characterized by different boundary conditions, shear deformability, and nonlocality are considered and the critical loads and shape modes are presented, including those for the higher modes of buckling. Excellent agreements are found with the available approximate numerical results in the literature and novel insightful findings are presented and discussed, which are in accordance with experimental observations.
