Simultaneous diurnal patterns of organ weights and several energy components are demonstrated in tissues from 21-day old male broiler chicks maintained under conditions standardized for periodicity analyses. Amplitudes of the diurnal changes revealed that, of the components studied, hepatic glucose and glycogen were most dynamic, the former increasing by 70% from 0800 to 1500 hours, and the latter by 150% in the same period. Data show that where the extent of the within-day variability for a tissue constituent is not known, sampling smaller numbers of animals at evenly spaced points over a 24-hour period, rather than an entire group at any one time of day, results in a more realistic approximation of the dynamics of a population and thus avoids confounding interpretation of the data.
