We consider a cylinder immersed in viscous fluid moving near a flat substrate covered by an incompressible viscoelastic fluid layer, and study the effect of the fluid viscoelasticity on the lift force exerted on the cylinder. The lift force is zero when the viscoelastic layer is not deformed, but becomes non-zero when it is deformed. We calculate the lift force by considering both the tangential stress and the normal stress applied at the surface of the viscoelastic layer. Our analysis indicates that as the layer changes from the elastic limit to the viscous limit, the lift force decreases with the decrease of the Deborah number (De). For small De, the effect of the layer elasticity is taken over by the surface tension and the lift force can become negative. We also show that the tangential stress and the interface slip velocity (the surface velocity relative to the substrate), which have been ignored in the previous analysis, give important contributions to the lift force. Increased ventilator use during the COVID-19 pandemic resurrected persistent questions regarding mechanical ventilation including the difference between physiological and artificial breathing induced by ventilators (i.e., positive- versus negative-pressure ventilation, PPV vs NPV). To address this controversy, we compare murine specimens subjected to PPV and NPV in ex vivo quasi-static loading and quantify pulmonary mechanics via measures of quasi-static and dynamic compliances, transpulmonary pressure, and energetics when varying inflation frequency and volume. Each investigated mechanical parameter yields instance(s) of significant variability between ventilation modes. Most notably, inflation compliance, percent relaxation, and peak pressure are found to be consistently dependent on the ventilation mode. Maximum inflation volume and frequency note varied dependencies contingent on the ventilation mode. Contradictory to limited previous clinical investigations of oxygenation and end-inspiratory measures, the mechanics-focused comprehensive findings presented here indicate lung properties are dependent on loading mode, and importantly, these dependencies differ between smaller versus larger mammalian species despite identical custom-designed PPV/NPV ventilator usage. Results indicate that past contradictory findings regarding ventilation mode comparisons in the field may be linked to the chosen animal model. Understanding the differing fundamental mechanics between PPV and NPV may provide insights for improving ventilation strategies and design to prevent associated lung injuries.

Ribbed plates are widely applied in the structures of subgrade and pavement in order to adapt to the increasingly complex moving loads and improve the bearing capacity of subgrade and pavement. The meshless methods are more flexible than the methods based on elements for some dynamic analysis of ribbed plate, such as free vibration, forced vibration and other fields. Based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and moving least-squares approximation (MLS), a meshless method for the dynamic response analysis of stiffened plate resting on viscoelastic Pasternak foundation is proposed in this paper. Additionally, the Newmark method is employed to solve the governing equation. Thereafter, several numerical examples of different boundary conditions, foundation coefficients, pulse loads, damping ratios and arrangement of stiffeners are calculated. The relative errors in the results obtained by comparing the present results to the finite element results or the literature solutions are all less than 5%, which demonstrates the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method in analyzing the dynamic properties of stiffened plate resting on viscoelastic Pasternak foundation. The present approach has advantages and potential for solving problems of complex rib layouts and structural optimization for ribbed plate resting on the foundation in engineering. We introduce models for viscoelastic materials, both solids and fluids, based on logarithmic stresses to capture the elastic contribution to the material response. The matrix logarithm allows to link the measures of strain, that naturally belong to a multiplicative group of linear transformations, to stresses, that are additive elements of a linear space of tensors. As regards the viscous stresses, we simply assume a Newtonian constitutive law, but the presence of elasticity and plastic relaxation makes the materials non‐Newtonian. Our aim is to discuss the existence of weak solutions for the corresponding systems of partial differential equations in the nonlinear large‐deformation regime. The main difficulties arise in the analysis of the transport equations necessary to describe the evolution of tensorial measures of strain. For the solid model, we only need to consider the equation for the left Cauchy–Green tensor, while for the fluid model, we add an evolution equation for the elastically‐relaxed strain. Due to the tensorial nature of the fields, available techniques cannot be applied to the analysis of such transport equations. To cope with this, we introduce the notion of charted weak solution, based on non‐standard a priori estimates, that lead to a global‐in‐time existence of solutions for the viscoelastic models in the natural functional setting associated with the energy inequality. Epithelial tissues respond strongly to the mechanical stress caused by collective cell migration and are able to regulate it, which is important for biological processes such as morphogenesis, wound healing, and suppression of the spread of cancer. Compressive, tensional, and shear stress components are produced in cells when epithelial monolayers on substrate matrices are actively or passively wetted or de-wetted. Increased compressive stress on cells leads to enhanced cell-cell interactions by increasing the frequency of change the cell-cell distances, triggering various signalling pathways within the cells. This can ultimately lead either to cell jamming or to the extrusion of live cells. Despite extensive research in this field, it remains unclear how cells decide whether to jam, or to extrude a cell or cells, and how cells can reduce the compressive mechanical stress. Live cell extrusion from the overcrowded regions of the monolayers is associated with the presence of topological defects of cell alignment, induced by an interplay between the cell compressive and shear stress components. These topological defects stimulate cell re-alignment, as a part of the cells' tendency to re-establish an ordered trend of cell migration, by intensifying the glancing interactions in overcrowded regions. In addition to individual cell extrusion, collective cell extrusion has also been documented during monolayer active de-wetting, depending on the cell type, matrix stiffness, and boundary conditions. Cell jamming has been discussed in the context of the cells' contact inhibition of locomotion caused by cell head-on interactions. Since cell-cell interactions play a crucial role in cell rearrangement in an overcrowded environment, this review is focused on physical aspects of these interactions in order to stimulate further biological research in the field. This study examines the flow dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of Maxwell fluid in a channel influenced by magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), Joule heating, thermal radiation, and boundary layer suction/blowing effects. The governing partial differential equations (PDEs) for momentum, energy, and concentration are transformed into ordinary differential equations (ODEs) using similarity transformations. The boundary value problem (BVP) is solved numerically using the bvp4c solver in MATLAB, yielding accurate solutions for velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles under various parameters. Key findings reveal that the porous parameter decreases the velocity profile but increases the temperature profile for both suction and blowing effects. Additionally, the MHD, Deborah, and Eckert numbers significantly influence the velocity and temperature profiles differently under these conditions. This study highlights the crucial role of integrating MHD, thermal, and boundary control effects to optimize performance and efficiency in engineering systems involving Maxwell fluids, with applications in polymer processing, biomedical engineering, electronics cooling, oil recovery, and chemical processing. Many energy absorption applications utilize flexible polymeric foams for their viscoelastic properties. It is desired that the material will perform consistently across repeated compression cycles. This study examines the effect of fatigue at low strain rates on the viscoelasticity of open‐cell polyurethane foam. Six polyurethanes of the same base composition with two porosities (70% and 80%) and three chemical indexes (79i, 100i, and 121i) are tested. Large deformation cyclic compression of the foams is conducted on a universal testing system (UTS). These data are then post‐processed leveraging dynamic mechanical analysis Fourier transform rheology to characterize changes in the viscoelasticity of the materials over fatigue cycles. Results show that foams can increase or decrease in stiffness up to 10% over 104 cycles. Specifically, higher chemical index, higher excitation frequency, and larger excitation amplitude correlate with a more pronounced decrease in stiffness. Damping can also change by 15% and correlates with chemical index and excitation frequency. Consequently, the findings suggest that internal foam structure and bulk material properties as well as applied loading parameters affect the viscoelastic fatigue response of flexible polymeric foams. Highlights Silica is a renewable resource that has become the primary filler for the rubber used in eco‐friendly tires. However, silica tends to agglomerate in the rubber matrix, particularly, micro‐ and nano‐scale silica, which limits its application. When ordinary‐particle‐size silica with low cost and high stacking density is modified using appropriate methods, high dispersion in rubber and good performance can be achieved with common processing equipment, which has significant engineering application value. In this study, silica particles with different sizes (nano‐scale, 19 and 45 μm) were treated with a 3‐mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane coupling agent (KH580). Subsequently, the silica with the ordinary particle size of 300 mesh (45 μm) was coated with natural latex (NL), and the mechanical properties of the modified silica‐filled styrene‐butadiene rubber (SBR)/carbon black (CB) compounds were investigated. The results revealed that the mechanical properties of the NL‐coated 45 μm silica‐filled composite improved significantly, particularly, in the area of tear strength and elongation at break, the composite properties were improved by 17.1% and 118.2%, respectively. Excellent performance over composites filled with coupling agent‐treated micron‐ and nanoscale silica. Enhancing the surface modification of silica through latex coating provides a means to improve the efficiency of industrial production and reduce costs. The rheological characterization of complex liquids is of great importance in many applications. Among the properties that can be measured, the relaxation time has great relevance, as it provides a measure of fluid elasticity. In this work, we propose a novel method to estimate the longest relaxation time of viscoelastic fluids by applying machine learning to microfluidics. Specifically, we train a long-short term memory (LSTM) neural network to identify the Weissenberg number that characterizes the dynamics of trains of rigid particles suspended in a viscoelastic liquid flowing in a cylindrical microchannel. We first study the effect of the Weissenberg number on the evolution of the microstructure through numerical simulations. An in silico dataset consisting of the distributions of the interparticle distances at different channel sections is built and used to train the network. The performance of the LSTM model is tested on both classification and regression problems. The Chandler period of Mars is a new parameter determined from observational data that characterizes the properties of the planetary interior. Numerical modeling of the period of the Chandler wobble of Mars was performed for a number of internal structure models that satisfy not only geodetic data (moment of inertia, tidal Love number k2), but also data obtained during a seismic experiment in the years 2019–2022. To reconcile the theoretical and observed values of the Chandler wobble, it is necessary to take into account the inelasticity of the mantle. To take into account the viscoelastic behavior of the interior, the Andrade rheological model was used. An analysis and modeling of the linear viscoelastic behavior of maltenes (M) blended with styrene–butadiene–styrene block copolymer (SBS) are presented in this study. M were mixed with different amounts of SBS (Elastomer, E) (0.25–80 wt%) to investigate the effect of polymer concentration on linear viscoelastic response of the blends; storage and loss moduli were obtained from small amplitude oscillatory shear tests (SAOS). Time–temperature superposition master curves were analyzed by a Maxwell multi-modal model with up to nine relaxation times. Han, Cole–Cole and Van Gurp-Palmen diagrams were prepared from the rheological data. Two different responses were observed: At low E contents, a dispersed system rheological response was observed and verified by microscopy with elastomer as the dispersed phase and maltenes as the matrix, while at high E content the response was that of a co-continuous system. Mixtures with E > 2 wt% exhibited change in their thermomechanical properties with a phase inversion at E > 50 wt%. Furthermore, at low E concentration resins stabilize the dispersed phase by diminishing the magnitude of the viscoelastic moduli, conversely, at high E concentration a swelled polymer-rich phase creates a network that significantly influences of the viscoelastic properties. Adsorptive polymer additives have been reported to improve the retention capacity of oil films under hydrodynamic lubrication and to reduce friction under boundary lubrication. These effects are believed to result from the formation of a polymer adsorption film on the surface that acts as a lubricious coating. Polymer adsorption films have become dominant in nanometer-order microscopic gaps. However, their mechanical properties are difficult to quantify. This hinders the development of polymer additives. In our previous study, we successfully measured the shear viscoelasticity of lubricants (base oils) sheared in nanogaps using an originally developed measurement method called the fiber wobbling method (FWM). In this study, we measured the shear viscoelasticity of polymer-added lubricants in nanogaps by using FWM. In addition, we developed a heating stage in the FWM to quantify the temperature dependence of shear viscoelasticity in nanogaps. As a result, the viscosity index improved and elasticity was observed in the nanogap, where the polymer adsorption film was dominant. Asphalt, a widely utilized binder material in pavement construction, brings notable environmental and economic advantages through its efficient and high-utilization technique of multiple recycling. Nevertheless, the microscale mechanical mechanisms and laws governing the damage evolution in asphalt during repeated aging and recycling processes remain unclear, posing challenges in determining the optimal reclamation method and timing for binder maintenance. This study seeks to bridge this gap by employing microstructural numerical simulation and viscoelastic computational methods to elucidate the fundamental changes in microstructural mechanics and relaxation spectra of asphalt binders during multiple aging and regeneration processes, ultimately enhancing the design efficiency of multiple regeneration pavements. The study's key findings revealed that aging decelerates the relaxation capacity and increases the modulus of asphalt, while regeneration reduces the modulus and enhances relaxation capacity. The initial two aging and regeneration processes significantly influenced the stress distribution in the microscopic phase of the asphalt. Following the third aging and rejuvenation, the stress threshold and area of stress concentration remained relatively unchanged. Aging and regeneration primarily alter the mechanical properties of the microscopic phase, affecting the stress relaxation capacity and complex modulus of asphalt. This study aimed to develop an alternative approach to characterise the linear viscoelastic behaviour of asphalt binders. A rheogram model was firstly proposed based on the Carreau–Yasuda model; its accuracy was substantiated by high R2 values. The dynamic shear modulus master curve model was then obtained using the relationship between the magnitude of complex viscosity and dynamic shear modulus and the two definitions of the time-temperature shift factor. Afterwards, the phase angle master curve model was derived according to the approximate Kramers–Kronig relation. The proposed approach was demonstrated to be capable of accurately characterising the linear viscoelastic behaviour of selected asphalt binders. In addition, the predicted zero shear viscosity (ZSV) could be potentially employed to evaluate the asphalt binder rutting resistance. Compared with the widely-used Christensen-Anderson-Marasteanu (CAM) model, the developed master curves models were better at constructing the phase angle master curves of selected asphalt binders. A conformational difference in gum arabic (GA) in aqueous and emulsion systems can influence its interaction with guar gum (GG). Therefore, in this study, the rheological and tribological properties of GG mixed with an orange oil emulsion containing GA at varying concentrations were investigated and compared with those of GG-GA mixtures. As the GA concentration was increased, the apparent viscosity of GG mixtures with either GA or GA-based emulsion (GAE) tended to decrease. Specifically, with a higher GA concentration (> 1.5%), the GG-GA mixtures showed a lower relative apparent viscosity than the GG-GAE mixtures. In contrast, except for GG-GA mixture with 6.0% GA, all other mixtures showed lower tan δ values (0.66–0.69) than GG alone (0.72), indicating an enhancement of weak gel-like properties. At a lower GA concentration (< 3.0%), GG-GA interactions in the aqueous system produced a lower relative tan δ value than those in the emulsion system, whereas the opposite result was observed with a higher GA concentration (> 4.5%). In addition, each type of mixture exhibited different tribological properties. As the GA concentration was increased, the friction coefficient (μ) values of both tended to decrease. Especially, the GG-GAE mixtures attained lower μ values than the GG-GA mixtures, thereby indicating that the former have better lubricant properties. Sponge‐like materials made from regenerated silk fibroin biopolymers are a tunable and advantageous platform for in vitro engineered tissue culture and in vivo tissue regeneration. Anisotropic, three‐dimensional (3D) silk fibroin sponge‐like scaffolds can mimic the architecture of contractile muscle. Herein, we use silk fibroin solution isolated from the cocoons of Bombyx mori silkworms to form aligned sponges via directional ice templating in a custom mold with a slurry of dry ice and ethanol. Hydrated tensile mechanical properties of these aligned sponges were evaluated as a function of silk polymer concentration (3% or 5%), freezing time (50% or 100% ethanol), and post‐lyophilization method for inducing crystallinity (autoclaving, water annealing). Hydrated static tensile tests were used to determine Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength across sponge formulations at two strain rates to evaluate rate dependence in the calculated parameters. Results aligned with previous reports in the literature for isotropic silk fibroin sponge‐like scaffolds, where the method by which beta‐sheets were formed and level of beta‐sheet content (crystallinity) had the greatest impact on static parameters, while polymer concentration and freezing rate did not significantly impact static mechanical properties. We estimated the crystalline organization using molecular dynamics simulations to show that larger crystalline regions may be responsible for strength at low strain amplitudes and brittleness at high strain amplitudes in the autoclaved sponges. Within the parameters evaluated, extensional Young's modulus is tunable in the range of 600–2800 kPa. Dynamic tensile testing revealed the linear viscoelastic region to be between 0% and 10% strain amplitude and 0.2–2 Hz frequencies. Long‐term stability was evaluated by hysteresis and fatigue tests. Fatigue tests showed minimal change in the storage and loss modulus of 5% silk fibroin sponges for more than 6000 min of continuous mechanical stimulation in the linear regime at 10% strain amplitude and 1 Hz frequency. Furthermore, we confirmed that these mechanical properties hold when decellularized extracellular matrix is added to the sponges and when the mechanical property assessments were performed in cell culture media. We also used nano‐computed tomography (nano‐CT) and simulations to explore pore interconnectivity and tortuosity. Overall, these results highlight the potential of anisotropic, sponge‐like silk fibroin scaffolds for long‐term (>6 weeks) contractile muscle culture with an in vitro bioreactor system that provides routine mechanical stimulation. AbstractThis paper studied the vibro-acoustic characteristics of functionally graded sandwich plate in hygrothermal environment, where the core layer is composed of functionally graded materials with viscoelasticity. The viscoelastic behavior of the materials is described by a linear standard solid viscoelastic model, and the viscoelastic parameters are dependent of the frequency. Based on the first-order shear deformation theory and the linear deformation, the dynamic governing equation and acoustic formulas are established. By solutions the complex frequency, sound insulation and acoustic radiation responses of the plate are obtained. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are elastomeric networks with anisotropic monomers that reorient in response to applied loads, and in particular, thermomechanical loads. LCE complex microstructures translate into complex behaviors, such as soft elasticity, rate‐dependency, and hysteresis. In this work, we develop a three‐dimensional finite element implementation for monodomain LCEs, with the material modeled as a finite deformation viscoelastic network with a viscous director. The formulation is designed so that the director field can be modeled as an internal variable. Unique to this class of materials is that their deformation response function depends on the full deformation gradient and not just the right‐stretch tensor. This results in the material tangent losing its 'usual' symmetry properties. Accordingly, this makes the use of a first Piola–Kirchhoff finite element formulation advantageous. We utilize this framework to examine a number of nuances associated with the simulation and design of LCE based systems. In particular, we investigate in some detail the importance of a careful characterization of an LCE's initial director field. Via simulations of separate tension and compression experiments, we highlight the possibility of incorrect predictions when even small perturbations to initial conditions occur. The simulations are also used to illustrate the goodness of the model in replicating simple and complex experimental results, including the first‐of‐their‐kind buckling‐like column compression and thick‐walled balloon inflation simulations. The contractile apparatus, stress fiber (SF), is connected to the cell adhesion machinery, focal adhesion (FA), at the termini of SF. The SF-FA complex is essential for various mechanical activities of cells, including cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix (ECM), ECM rigidity sensing, and cell migration. This mini-review highlights the importance of SF mechanics in these cellular activities. Actin-crosslinking proteins solidify SFs by attenuating myosindriven flows of actin and myosin filaments within the SF. In the solidified SFs, viscous slippage between actin filaments in SFs and between the filaments and the surrounding cytosol is reduced, leading to efficient transmission of myosin-generated contractile force along the SFs. Hence, SF solidification via actin crosslinking ensures exertion of a large force to FAs, enabling FA maturation, ECM rigidity sensing and cell migration. We further discuss intracellular mechanisms for tuning crosslinker-modulated SF mechanics and the potential relationship between the aberrance of SF mechanics and pathology including cancer. The three-dimensional dynamical model for nonlinear viscoelasticity of strain-rate type is investigated in a quasistatic setting under the assumption of higher-order regularity of the deformation, which in the literature is referred to as the case of non-simple materials. The existence of weak solutions is proven using a time-discretization technique while respecting the condition of dynamical frame indifference. Some observations on frame indifference for strain-rate-type stresses are made, and corrections are proposed for some related work in the literature. Finally, a counterexample is given to show that the assumed higher-order regularity is necessary in order to obtain the required compactness. This study examines a class of time-dependent constitutive equations used to describe viscoelastic materials under creep in solid mechanics. In nonlinear elasticity, the strain response to the applied stress is expressed via an implicit graph allowing multi-valued functions. For coercive and maximal monotone graphs, the existence of a solution to the quasi-static viscoelastic problem is proven by applying the Browder–Minty fixed point theorem. Moreover, for quasi-linear viscoelastic problems, the solution is constructed as a semi-analytic formula. The inverse viscoelastic problem is represented by identification of a design variable from non-smooth measurements. A non-empty set of optimal variables is obtained based on the compactness argument by applying Tikhonov regularization in the space of bounded measures and deformations. Furthermore, an illustrative example is given for the inverse problem of isotropic kernel identification. Mixing in biogas fermenters is complex due to the non‐Newtonian rheology of biogenic substrates, which exhibit both pseudoplasticity and elasticity. It is yet unclear how these non‐Newtonian properties affect propeller flows and the mixing behavior in fermenters. Therefore, propeller flows in Newtonian as well as shear‐thinning inelastic and elastic fluids are compared numerically and validated against particle image velocity (PIV) data. Elastic normal stresses lead to an increase of pumping rates in the laminar regime and a suppression of the formation of a propeller jet in the transitional regime. Thus, flow rates are severely overestimated by the inelastic, shear‐thinning model in this regime. Highlights Fabric‐reinforced shape memory polymeric composites (SMPC) have shown great potential in the design of intelligent deformation structures. In this work, the weft‐knitted fabric inserted with weft yarns was developed as reinforcement to fabricate the shape memory epoxy polymer (SMEP) composites. The effects of weft yarn, loop density and direction on the shape memory performance of SMPC under different bending radii were experimentally investigated. The results show that the SMPC have good shape fixity ratios and shape recovery ratios of around 98%. As compared with those of SMPCs without inserting weft yarns, the SMPCs with weft yarns have shorter shape recovery time, and the recovery force of SMPCs with weft yarns in the 0° and 90° directions shows an increase of 86.4% and 79.5%, respectively. The recovery force of SMPC improve 3.7 times compared to SMEP. The multiscale models of SMPC were established with basis of the results of micro‐computed tomography scanning of specimens and viscoelastic theory. The surface buckling behaviors of SMEP and SMPC specimens after U‐bending load were discussed. Mechanically, the brain is characterized by both solid and fluid properties. The resulting unique material behavior fosters proliferation, differentiation, and repair of cellular and vascular networks, and optimally protects them from damaging shear forces. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a noninvasive imaging technique that maps the mechanical properties of the brain in vivo. MRE studies have shown that abnormal processes such as neuronal degeneration, demyelination, inflammation, and vascular leakage lead to tissue softening. In contrast, neuronal proliferation, cellular network formation, and higher vascular pressure result in brain stiffening. In addition, brain viscosity has been reported to change with normal blood perfusion variability and brain maturation as well as disease conditions such as tumor invasion. In this article, the contributions of the neuronal, glial, extracellular, and vascular networks are discussed to the coarse‐grained parameters determined by MRE. This reductionist multi‐network model of brain mechanics helps to explain many MRE observations in terms of microanatomical changes and suggests that cerebral viscoelasticity is a suitable imaging marker for brain disease. Motivated by the recent numerical results of Khalid et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. , vol. 127, 2021, 134502), we consider the large-Weissenberg-number ($W$) asymptotics of the centre mode instability in inertialess viscoelastic channel flow. The instability is of the critical layer type in the distinguished ultra-dilute limit where $W(1-\beta)=O(1)$ as $W \rightarrow \infty$ ($\beta$ is the ratio of solvent-to-total viscosity). In contrast to centre modes in the Orr–Sommerfeld equation, $1-c=O(1)$ as $W \rightarrow \infty$ , where $c$ is the phase speed normalised by the centreline speed as a central 'outer' region is always needed to adjust the non-zero cross-stream velocity at the critical layer down to zero at the centreline. The critical layer acts as a pair of intense 'bellows' which blows the flow streamlines apart locally and then sucks them back together again. This compression/rarefaction amplifies the streamwise-normal polymer stress which in turn drives the streamwise flow through local polymer stresses at the critical layer. The streamwise flow energises the cross-stream flow via continuity which in turn intensifies the critical layer to close the cycle. We also treat the large-Reynolds-number ($Re$) asymptotic structure of the upper (where $1-c=O(Re^{-2/3})$) and lower branches of the $Re$ – $W$ neutral curve, confirming the inferred scalings from previous numerical computations. Objective: In addition to the well-established advantage that strengthened pelvic musculature increases urethral resistance in stress urinary incontinence (SUI) patients, intra-vaginal electrical stimulation (iVES) has been shown in preclinical studies to improve bladder capacity via the pudendal-hypogastric mechanism. This study investigated whether iVES also benefits bladder storage in SUI patients by focusing on compliance, a viscoelastic parameter critically defining the bladder's storage function, in a clinical study. Moreover, the potential involvement of stimulation-induced neuromodulation in iVESmodified compliance was investigated by comparing the therapeutic outcomes of SUI patients treated with iVES to those who underwent a trans-obturator tape (TOT) implantation surgery, where a mid-urethral sling was implanted without electric stimulation. Patients and methods: Urodynamic and viscoelastic data were collected from 21 SUI patients treated with a regimen combining iVES and biofeedbackassisted pelvic floor muscle training (iVES-bPFMT; 20-min iVES and 20-min bPFMT sessions, twice per week, for 3 months). This regimen complied with ethical standards. Data from 21 SUI patients who received TOT implantation were retrospectively analyzed. Mean compliance (Cm), infused volume (Vinf), and threshold pressure (Pthr) from the pressure-flow/volume investigations were assessed. Results: Compared with the pretreatment control, iVES-bPFMT consistently and significantly increased Cm (18/21; 85%, p = 0.017, N = 21) and Vinf (16/21; 76%, p = 0.046; N = 21) but decreased Pthr (16/21; 76%, p = 0.026, N = 21). In contrast, TOT implantation did not result in consistent or significant changes in Cm, Vinf, or Pthr (p = 0.744, p = 0.295, p = 0.651, respectively; all N = 21). Conclusion: Our results provide viscoelastic and thermodynamic evidence supporting an additional benefit of iVES-bPFMT to bladder storage in SUI patients by modifying bladder compliance, possibly due to the potentiated hypogastric tone, which did not occur in TOT-treated SUI patients. This paper studied the adhesive contact between a viscoelastic sphere and a rigid plane, and presented a dimensionless first-order differential equation to directly describe the relationship between the applied load and the contact radius. By adopting a combination strategy, the singularity of Muller's dimensionless first-order differential equation was avoided well. To study the dependence of the pull-off force on the initial applied load, a table-based linear and logarithmic interpolation method was presented to determine the contact radius at the pull-off. The dependence of the square root (ζmax) of the ratio of the effective adhesion work at the upper bound to the equilibrium adhesion work on Muller's parameter β and material constant n was deduced theoretically. And the relationship between the contact radius at the upper bound and ζmax was also deduced theoretically. In addition, the ratio of the pull-off force to the maximum pull-off force was determined to be cubic function of the ratio of the contact radius at the pull-off to that at the upper bound numerically. If β, n and the initial applied load were given, utilizing these relationships, the pull-off force and the maximum pull-off force could be predicted well. Viscosity, elasticity, and viscoelastic properties are one of the most fundamental properties of liquid crystalline materials; the main problem in determining these properties is the multitude of physical parameters needed to determine the values of elasticity and viscosity constants. In this paper, a number of different measurement methods for the complete characterization of viscoelastic properties for smectic liquid crystalline materials and their mixtures are analyzed, both theoretically and experimentally. The way in which viscoelastic material constants are determined depends mainly on the application/purpose of the materials under study. The subject of this work was to review the methods used to determine viscoelastic effects in ferroelectric and antiferroelectric chiral liquid crystals, their mixtures, composite materials, and even in dielectric systems, which would bear the hallmark of a universal method allowing the application of sufficiently low electric fields. Mechanical stress governs the dynamics of viscoelastic polymer systems and supercooled glass-forming fluids. It was recently established that liquids with long terminal relaxation times are characterized by transiently frozen stress fields, which, moreover, exhibit long-range correlations contributing to the dynamically heterogeneous nature of such systems. Recent studies show that stress correlations and relaxation elastic moduli are intimately related in isotropic viscoelastic systems. However, the origin of these relations (involving spatially resolved material relaxation functions) is non-trivial: some relations are based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT), while others involve approximations. Generalizing our recent results on 2D systems, we here rigorously derive three exact FDT relations (already established in our recent investigations and, partially, in classical studies) between spatio-temporal stress correlations and generalized relaxation moduli, and a couple of new exact relations. We also derive several new approximate relations valid in the hydrodynamic regime, taking into account the effects of thermal conductivity and composition fluctuations for arbitrary space dimension. One approximate relation was heuristically obtained in our previous studies and verified using our extended simulation data on two-dimensional (2D) glass-forming systems. As a result, we provide the means to obtain, in any spatial dimension, all stress-correlation functions in terms of relaxation moduli and vice versa. The relaxation spectrum is a fundamental viscoelastic characteristic from which other material functions used to describe the rheological properties of polymers can be determined. The spectrum is recovered from relaxation stress or oscillatory shear data. Since the problem of the relaxation spectrum identification is ill-posed, in the known methods, different mechanisms are built-in to obtain a smooth enough and noise-robust relaxation spectrum model. The regularization of the original problem and/or limit of the set of admissible solutions are the most commonly used remedies. Here, the problem of determining an optimally smoothed continuous relaxation time spectrum is directly stated and solved for the first time, assuming that discrete-time noise-corrupted measurements of a relaxation modulus obtained in the stress relaxation experiment are available for identification. The relaxation time spectrum model that reproduces the relaxation modulus measurements and is the best smoothed in the class of continuous square-integrable functions is sought. Based on the Hilbert projection theorem, the best-smoothed relaxation spectrum model is found to be described by a finite sum of specific exponential–hyperbolic basis functions. For noise-corrupted measurements, a quadratic with respect to the Lagrange multipliers term is introduced into the Lagrangian functional of the model's best smoothing problem. As a result, a small model error of the relaxation modulus model is obtained, which increases the model's robustness. The necessary and sufficient optimality conditions are derived whose unique solution yields a direct analytical formula of the best-smoothed relaxation spectrum model. The related model of the relaxation modulus is given. A computational identification algorithm using the singular value decomposition is presented, which can be easily implemented in any computing environment. The approximation error, model smoothness, noise robustness, and identifiability of the polymer real spectrum are studied analytically. It is demonstrated by numerical studies that the algorithm proposed can be successfully applied for the identification of one- and two-mode Gaussian-like relaxation spectra. The applicability of this approach to determining the Baumgaertel, Schausberger, and Winter spectrum is also examined, and it is shown that it is well approximated for higher frequencies and, in particular, in the neighborhood of the local maximum. However, the comparison of the asymptotic properties of the best-smoothed spectrum model and the BSW model a priori excludes a good approximation of the spectrum in the close neighborhood of zero-relaxation time. Featured Application: Featured Application: Seismic design of steel moment-resisting frames equipped with viscoelastic dampers in the framework of the Eurocode 8 provisions. The effectiveness of viscoelastic dampers as passive control devices has been demonstrated in the past through both experimental and numerical investigations. Based on the Modal Strain Energy Method, some authors have also proposed design procedures to size the viscoelastic dampers assuming a fist-mode behavior of the structure. However, even if the damped structure is governed by the first mode of vibration, viscoelastic dampers are sensitive to the frequencies of the upper modes and transmit unexpected internal forces to braces. This paper aims to develop a simple design procedure for steel moment-resisting frames equipped with viscoelastic dampers considering the effects of the higher modes of vibrations on the internal forces transmitted from the dampers to the braces. In the perspective of a designer-oriented study, the seismic demand is evaluated through simple analytical tools, such as the lateral force method or the response spectrum analysis. The design procedure is applied to a set of steel moment-resisting frames considering two levels of seismic hazard and two types of soil. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed procedure is verified through nonlinear dynamic analysis. Based on the results, it is found that the proposed design procedure ensures the control of the story drift below prefixed limits and to predict accurately the internal forces that arise in the braces. BACKGROUND: The anterior cruciate ligament has unique nonlinear mechanical properties under a complex physiological loading environment. Elastin is an important contributor to the mechanical properties of the anterior cruciate ligament, but its mechanical response to the anterior cruciate ligament under axial tension is not clear. OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively analyze the effect of elastin on the tensile mechanical response of the anterior cruciate ligament. METHODS: Elastase solution and control buffer were prepared. The porcine anterior cruciate ligament samples were prepared into small-size samples and randomly soaked in 0, 0.1, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, and 10.0 U/mL elastase solution for 6 hours, and other small samples of the same size were soaked in 2 U/mL elastase solution for 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 hours. To determine suitable soaking conditions for elastin-targeted enzymes and verify the digestive effect, histological staining was used to compare the effects of enzyme treatment on tissue structure and composition. The ligament samples were randomly divided into elastase-treated group and PBS group, and immersed in 2 U/mL elastase solution and PBS buffer for 6 hours, respectively. A mechanical tensile test was performed before and after immersion. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The biochemical results showed that being treated in 2 U/mL elastase solution for 6 hours could reduce the elastin content by 31.1%, and had no significant effect on other mechanical-related components in the tissue. (2) The histological results showed that elastase was able to penetrate the tissue, and the loose degree of tissue increased after treatment. (3) In the mechanical results before and after treatment, the mechanical properties of the PBS group decreased significantly, only the low-tension elastic modulus increased significantly and the initial length increased significantly in the elastase-treated group. (4) The intergroup comparison results showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups in pre-treatment, but the low-tension elastic modulus, initial slopes, saturated slopes, and initial length of the elastase-treated group after treatment were significantly higher than those in the PBS group. (5) These results suggest that elastin degradation significantly affects the biomechanical properties of the anterior cruciate ligament and further complements our understanding of the structure-function relationship of the anterior cruciate ligament. Various stress-releasing phenomena, such as episodic tremor and slip (ETS) and low-frequency earthquakes, occur at the downdip seismogenic zone in southwest Japan. However, it is unclear how much net stress and slip deficit accumulate at these depths during the interseismic phase. Here, we perform both elastic and viscoelastic earthquake-cycle forward models and reassess the locking state in Nankai from a synthesized perspective with the aid of geodetic modeling results. Our results suggest that the overestimation of the locking depth due to ignoring Earth's viscoelasticity is much smaller (less than 5 km) in this early interseismic subduction zone compared to that (~ 10 km) of late-interseismic margins. Considering viscoelastic modeling results and other physical arguments, the preferred steady-state viscosities for the continental and oceanic mantle are 5 × 1019 Pa s and 1020 Pa s, respectively. We find a clear trade-off between the full locking depth and the width of the transition zone when explaining both horizontal and vertical geodetic data, demanding other data to further resolve this inherent ambiguity. Unlike in Cascadia, partial megathrust locking in Nankai likely penetrates into the ETS zone, leaving no intervening gap between the shallow megathrust, where hosts large earthquakes, and the ETS zone. Assuming locking extends into the downdip of the ETS zone (i.e., 40 km), we propose a preferred viscoelastic locking model with a full locking depth of 18 km and a broad transition zone spanning a 22-km depth range. In this model, the downdip half portion of the transition zone corresponds to the ETS zone, which can accumulate certain slip deficit in a largely creeping and partially locked state. However, most of the accumulated slip deficit in the ETS zone may be accommodated aseismically simultaneously by stress-releasing phenomena, leaving limited to no budget to release during future megathrust earthquakes. We suggest that precise documentation of total slip during slow slip events, along with refinement of viscoelastic locking models, will provide new insights into the net slip budget available in the ETS zone. A generalization of fractional linear viscoelasticity based on Scarpi's approach to variable-order fractional calculus is presented. After reviewing the general mathematical framework, a variable-order fractional Maxwell model is analysed as a prototypical example for the theory. Some physical considerations are then provided concerning the fractionalisation procedure and the choice of the transition functions. The periodontal ligament plays a significant role in orthodontic and masticatory processes. To explicitly investigate the effects of dynamic force amplitude and frequency on the dynamic tensile properties of the periodontal ligament, in vitro tensile experiments were conducted using a dynamic mechanical analysis at various dynamic force amplitudes across a wide frequency range. Storage modulus, loss modulus, and loss factor values were measured. A Maxwell constitutive model based on modulus was established to describe the dynamic mechanical properties of the periodontal ligament. The results showed that the storage modulus ranged from 29.53 MPa to 158.24 MPa, the loss modulus ranged from 3.26 MPa to 76.16 MPa, and the loss factor values all increased with higher frequencies and higher dynamic force amplitudes. Based on the parameters obtained from the fitting results, it is evident that the short‐term response has a more pronounced impact on the elastic response of the periodontal ligament than the long‐term response. Increasing the dynamic force amplitude and its frequency amplified the viscous effects of the periodontal ligament and enhanced energy dissipation. The proposed constitutive model further demonstrated that the periodontal ligament acts as a viscoelastic biomaterial. The objective of this work is to study the asymptotic justification of the two-dimensional model of viscoelastic von Kármán membrane shells. More precisely, we consider a three-dimensional model for a nonlinearly viscoelastic membrane shell with a specific class of boundary conditions of von Kármán type. Using techniques from formal asymptotic analysis with the thickness of the shell as a small parameter, we show that the scaled three-dimensional solution still leads to the two-dimensional model of viscoelastic von Kármán membrane shells. There is a correlation between nonlocal time and space in the nanostructures which are attacked by waves whose length lies in the range of the nanostructure's intrinsic characteristic lengths. This temporal–spatial coupling affects the viscoelastic behaviors of the nanostructures. In such a case, the conventional tempo-spatially decoupled nonlocal viscoelasticity is not able to provide accurate dynamic responses. To resolve this problem, the present paper focuses on the development of a novel fractional nonlocal time–space strain gradient viscoelasticity and shows its application in the wave propagation analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) nanobeams. The fractional constitutive equations are derived on the basis of the combination of the well-known nonlocal strain gradient elasticity and fractional nonlocal time–space hypotheses. The motion equations of the beam-type elements are presented on the basis of the refined higher-order beam theory and Hamilton's principle. With this newly developed nonlocal theory, the governing equations of the nanobeam are extracted. Afterward, an analytical wave solution will be utilized to achieve the loss factor of the problem. The results of this work reveal that an increase in the nonlocal parameter can reduce the loss factor in a remarkable way due to the coupling between the nonlocalities in the spatial and temporal domains. In this paper, a new relation of multi-temperatures was presented. This new connection to the problem of the general thermo-viscoelastic material in the context of Lord-Shulman (L-S) theory was applied. The analytical expressions for physical quantities are obtained using normal mode analysis in the physical domain. These expressions are numerically calculated and graphically illustrated for a given material. The improvement of computing power provides a support for finite element simulation analysis, which can solve more complex structures and nonlinear problems more efficiently. In this study, based on the finite element simulation analysis technology, the complex mechanical properties of Mn-Cu alloy are simulated. Prony series constitutive model and parallel rheological constitutive model are respectively adopted to simulate the stress relaxation test of Mn-Cu alloy under different deformation conditions. The stress relaxation experimental data are extracted and converted into the corresponding model parameters and the finite element simulation calculation is carried out. The simulation model parameters which can accurately describe the nonlinear mechanical properties of Mn-Cu alloy are obtained. By comparing the simulation and experimental results, it is concluded that the parallel rheological framework can more accurately characterize the stress relaxation behavior of Mn-Cu alloy. Under different initial strain conditions, the relative error of the simulation results and the test results under corresponding working conditions is less than 1%. In the framework of the theory of linear viscoelasticity, we derive an analytical expression of the relaxation modulus in the Andrade model G α t for the case of rational parameter α = m / n ∈ (0 , 1) in terms of Mittag–Leffler functions from its Laplace transform G ˜ α s . It turns out that the expression obtained can be rewritten in terms of Rabotnov functions. Moreover, for the original parameter α = 1 / 3 in the Andrade model, we obtain an expression in terms of Miller-Ross functions. The asymptotic behaviours of G α t for t → 0 + and t → + ∞ are also derived applying the Tauberian theorem. Non-linear rheological behaviours of high fluorine content fluoroelastomer (HF-FKM) mixtures with varied carbon black (CB) filling amounts were investigated. Non-linear viscoelastic characteristics of HF-FKM mixture are characterised by large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) tests, correlations between rheological behaviour and CB content were then discussed. Each non-linear viscoelastic parameter of HF-FKM mixture presents a three-stage characteristic with increasing CB content, corresponding to ranges of 0–20 phr, 25–30 phr, and 35–45 phr. Three stages of viscoelasticity characteristics for HF-FKM mixtures were considered to depend on the alteration of CB-elastomer network structure with increasing CB content, corresponding to the states where continuous phase of gum, CB-elastomer mesophase and excessive CB agglomerates predominate in mixture compound, respectively. After vulcanisation, samples with 30 phr CB content show the best resilience performance against thermal ageing, contributing to the existence of CB-elastomer mesophase. Samples with 25 phr CB content possess the second lowest compression sets at 225 and 250 °C ageing conditions but perform no better than those with 35 phr at 275 °C. The reason is presumed to be that the presence of excessive CB agglomerates in HF-FKM vulcanisate reduced irreversible deformation of the CB-elastomer network under compression at elevated temperatures. As temperature and salt-resistant materials, hydrophobically associating polymers can form a reversible spatial network structure through the interaction between their hydrophobic groups, effectively improve the viscosity of the polymer solution through association, and enhance the temperature and salt resistance of the polymer. Hydrophobically associating monomers have different effects on the properties of polymer solutions. Herein, acrylic acid, acrylamide, and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid were used as hydrophilic monomers. The three hydrophobic monomers with different carbon chain lengths were prepared by the bromination reaction. Hydrophobic associating polymers DQM1-PAM, DQM2-PAM, and DQM3-PAM were prepared by aqueous solution free-radical polymerization. The structure–activity relationship of the hydrophobic monomers with different carbon chain lengths on polymers was studied. It was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H-NMR that the target product was successfully synthesized. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that with increasing hydrophobic carbon chain length, the hydrophobic microarea of molecular aggregation increased, forming a closer spatial network structure. Thermogravimetric and fluorescence tests revealed that with increasing hydrophobic carbon chain length of polymer molecules, the polymerization temperature resistance increased, intermolecular association degree increased, and critical association concentration decreased. Rheological property evaluation revealed that the viscosity of 0.5% polymer DQM1-PAM, DQM2-PAM, and DQM3-PAM was 71.32, 100.21, and 118.79 mPa·s after shearing at 120 °C and 170 s−1 for 1 h. With the increase in the carbon chain length, the retention rate of shear viscosity of polymer in a salt solution increased, showing good salt resistance. We present a class of model-free Data-Driven solvers that effectively enable the utilization of in situ and in vivo imaging data directly in full-scale calculations of the mechanical response of the human brain to sonic and ultrasonic stimulation, entirely bypassing the need for analytical modeling or regression of the data. The well-posedness of the approach and its convergence with respect to data are proven analytically. We demonstrate the approach, including its ability to make detailed spatially resolved patient-specific predictions of wave patterns, using public-domain MRI images, MRE data and commercially available solid-mechanics software. Understanding the viscoelastic behavior of pediatric brain tissue is critical to interpret how external mechanical forces affect head injury in children. However, knowledge of the viscoelastic properties of pediatric brain tissue is limited, and this reduces the biofidelity of developed numeric simulations of the pediatric head in analysis of brain injury. Thus, it is essential to characterize the viscoelastic behavior of pediatric brain tissue in various loading conditions and to identify constitutive models. In this study, the pediatric porcine brain tissue was investigated in compression with determine the viscoelasticity under small and large strain, respectively. A range of frequencies between 0.1 and 40 Hz was applied to determine frequency-dependent viscoelastic behavior via dynamic mechanical analysis, while brain samples were divided into three strain rate groups of 0.01/s, 1/s and 10/s for compression up to 0.3 strain level and stress relaxation to obtain time-dependent viscoelastic properties. At frequencies above 20 Hz, the storage modulus did not increase, while the loss modulus increased continuously. With strain rate increasing from 0.01/s to 10/s, the mean stress at 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 strain increased to approximate 6.8, 5.6 and 4.4 times, respectively. The brain compressive response was sensitive to strain rate and frequency. A numerical procedure to simulate the curing process of polymer‐based composites is proposed. This model is applied to a carbon‐epoxy composite at a micromechanical level to predict residual stress at the end of the process and the evolution of the most important process parameters. A finite element model is written in the Ansys APDL environment and comprises two moduli that must be solved consecutively: the thermal–kinetical and structural modules. At each timestep, first thermal/kinetics problem is solved, then the temperature and degree of conversion profile results are used to calculate the viscoelastic properties, allowing the calculation of residual stress. In this investigation, we delve into the influence of throughflow on the phenomenon of bi-disperse convection within Rivlin-Ericksen fluid. In the context of examining bi-disperse convection within this specific type of fluid, the throughflow effect is considered to have a uniform vertical distribution. The primary focus of this study centers on evaluating the system’s linear stability. To achieve this, we employ normal mode analysis to compute the Darcy-Rayleigh number at the onset of convection. This Darcy-Rayleigh number is computed for both stationary and oscillatory convection modes. Furthermore, we conduct a comprehensive analysis and present the results in graphical form to illustrate the impact of various parameters, including Peclet number and kinematic viscoelastic parameter, on both stationary and oscillatory convection. Our research findings demonstrate that when Peclet number Pr1 < 0, it leads to destabilising effect on both stationary and oscillatory convections. The equine hoof wall has outstanding impact resistance, which enables high-velocity gallop over hard terrain with minimum damage. To better understand its viscoelastic behavior, complex moduli were determined using two complementary techniques: conventional (∼5 mm length scale) and nano (∼1 µm length scale) dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The evolution of their magnitudes was measured for two hydration conditions: fully hydrated and ambient. The storage modulus of the ambient hoof wall was approximately 400 MPa in macro-scale experiments, decreasing to ∼250 MPa with hydration. In contrast, the loss tangent decreased for both hydrated (∼0.1–0.07) and ambient (∼0.04–0.01) conditions, over the frequency range of 1–10 Hz. Nano-DMA indentation tests conducted up to 200 Hz showed little frequency dependence beyond 10 Hz. The loss tangent of tubular regions showed more hydration sensitivity than in intertubular regions, but no significant difference in storage modulus was observed. Loss tangent and effective stiffness were higher in indentations for both hydration levels. This behavior is attributed to the hoof wall's hierarchical structure, which has porosity, functionally graded aspects, and material interfaces that are not captured at the scale of indentation. The hoof wall's viscoelasticity characterized in this work has implications for the design of bioinspired impact-resistant materials and structures. The outer wall of horse hooves evolved to withstand heavy impacts during gallop. While previous studies have measured the properties of the hoof wall in slowly changing conditions, we wanted to quantify its behavior using experiments that replicate the quickly changing forces of impact. Since the hoof wall's structure is complex and contributes to its overall performance, smaller scale experiments were also performed. The behavior of the hoof wall was within the range of other biological materials and polymers. When hydrated, it becomes softer and can dissipate more energy.
