About 10 years ago, in an attempt to make astronomy more accessible, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) engineered a program to bridge the gap between the astronomy-enthusiast and the astronomy-curious. While attending summer workshops for teachers, Andrew Fraknoi, then executive director of the ASP, would come across elementary and middle-school teachers enthusiastic about educating students in astronomy but somewhat fearful of fielding students' astronomy-related questions. Born from these conversations with teachers was Project ASTRO. This innovative program joins amateur and professional astronomers with instructors throughout the United States to furnish 4th through 9th-grade students with a hands-on introduction to astronomy. Not only does this supplement the students' education, but the collaboration also affords astronomers an opportunity to share their passion with others and give back to their community. To launch Project ASTRO, the ASP applied for and obtained a grant from the National Science Foundation. With this funding, the program officially began in 1994, matching trained volunteers with classrooms at regional sites in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Now, Project ASTRO reaches out to more than 120,000 students through 12 sites in the United States. Project ASTRO national network sites are present in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, and Washington. When the regional site is operational, the teacher-astronomer relationships are created. Matchmaking derives from sorting volunteers' applications and uniting them with a teacher based on criteria including location, grade level, and subject interest.
