Abstract
The article discusses the state of foreign-language learning in Great Britain at all levels. According to the British Academy's 2009 paper "Language Matters," the recent trends in foreign-language learning may tarnish the distinction of British scholarship within the humanities and social sciences. The 2004 decision of the British government to make languages optional for pupils ages 14 to 16 has allegedly led to the increase in the proportion of school children doing no languages at all. Such issues pose threats to research and language skills supply.
