Damage accumulation and failure in random fiber networks is of importance in a variety of applications, from design of synthetic materials, such as paper and non-wovens, to accidental tearing of biological tissues. In this work we study these processes using three-dimensional models of athermal fiber networks, focusing attention on the modes of failure and on the relationship between network strength and network structural parameters. We consider network failure at small and large strains associated with the rupture of inter-fiber bonds. It is observed that the strength increases linearly with the network volume fraction and with the bond strength, while the stretch at peak stress is inversely related to these two parameters. A small fraction of the bonds rupture before peak stress and this fraction increases with increasing failure stretch. Rendering the bond strength stochastic causes a reduction of the network strength. However, heterogeneity retards damage localization and increases the stretch at peak stress, therefore promoting ductility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this paper, a new definition of SE and CE, which is based on the hexahedron mesh and simpler than Chang’s original CE/SE method (the space–time Conservation Element and Solution Element method), is proposed and an improved CE/SE scheme is constructed. Furthermore, the improved CE/SE scheme is extended in order to solve the elastic–plastic flow problems. The hybrid particle level set method is used for tracing the interfaces of materials. Proper boundary conditions are presented in interface tracking. Two high-velocity impact problems are simulated numerically and the computational results are carefully compared with the experimental data, as well as the results from other literature and LS-DYNA software. The comparisons show that the computational scheme developed currently is clear in physical concept, easy to be implemented and high accurate and efficient for the problems considered. Abstract: In this paper, we introduce an alternative skew-slash distribution in multivariate setting. This includes as a special case the symmetric multivariate slash distribution, and otherwise provides skew extension of the multivariate slash distribution. The distribution is potentially useful for empirical modeling and in robustness studies. Some properties of the new distribution are presented. An application is provided for illustrative reason. Abstract: This paper considers a class of social foraging swarms with a nutrient profile (or an attractant/repellent) and an attraction–repulsion coupling function, which is chosen to guarantee collision avoidance between individuals. The paper also studies non-identical interaction ability or efficiency among different swarm individuals for different profiles. The swarm behavior is a result of a balance between inter-individual interplays as well as the interplays of the swarm individuals (agents) with their environment. It is proved that the individuals of a quasi-reciprocal swarm will aggregate and eventually form a cohesive cluster of finite size for different profiles. It is also shown that the swarm system is completely stable, that is, every solution converges to the set of equilibrium points of the system. Moreover, all the swarm individuals will converge to more favorable areas of the profile under certain conditions. For general non-reciprocal swarms, numerical simulations show that more complex self-organized rotation may occur in the swarms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A model for particle-level simulation of fiber suspensions has been used to simulate paper sheet forming on a roll–blade former. The fibers were modeled as chains of fiber segments, flowing and interacting with the medium and with each other. The incompressible three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations were used to describe the fluid motion. Real pulps were analyzed to provide raw material data for the simulations. Dewatering was simulated by moving two model forming fabrics toward each other through a fiber suspension. Close examination of the dewatering process revealed that no large concentration gradients develop through the thickness of the pulp suspension. In this sense, twin-wire dewatering does not resemble a filtration process. The effects of the jet-to-wire speed difference on the network structure of the paper were investigated. The structural features of interest were fiber orientation anisotropy, mass density distribution and three-dimensionality of the fiber network. It was demonstrated that these simulated structural features were at least in qualitative agreement with experimental data found in the literature. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, a three dimensional autonomous system which is similar to the Lorenz system is considered. By choosing an appropriate bifurcation parameter, we prove that a Hopf bifurcation occurs in this system when the bifurcation parameter exceeds a critical value. A formula for determining the direction of the Hopf bifurcation and the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions is presented by applying the normal form theory. Abstract: In a very concise paper, Koch and Spreij have proposed a software reliability model which generalized Jelinski–Moranda’s one. The basic assumption is that the failure intensity is proportional to the residual number of failures, but the initial number of failures is not known. In fact, this paper contained original ideas which were rediscovered by others some time later usually in a Bayesian modelling framework. Their paper will be revisited here. Specifically the results supporting the discussion on various specific models by Koch and Spreij [Koch, G., Spreij, P., 1983. Software reliability as an application of martingale & filtering theory. Abstract: In a previous Central Limit Theorem by moments, it has been proved that the moments converge to those of the normal distribution if the moments of sums are asymptotically independent (cf. Blacher, R., 1990. Theoreme de la limite centrale par les moments. C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris. 311(I), 465–468). In this paper we generalize this result by adding a negligible sequence to these sums. Abstract: In this paper we present a new effective algorithm for the Schrödinger equation. This new method differs from the original Numerov method only in one simple coefficient, by which we can extend the interval of periodicity from 6 to infinity and obtain an embedded correct factor to improve the accuracy. We compare the new method with the original Numerov method by the well-known problem of Woods–Saxon potential. The numerical results show that the new method has great advantage in accuracy over the original. Particularly for the resonant state, the accuracy is improved with four orders overall, and even six to seven orders for the highest oscillatory solution. This paper studies the shrinkage estimation for the difference between location parameters of exponential distributions when it is suspected but uncertain whether the two parameters are equal. A pre-test estimator and a shrinkage estimator after pre-test are proposed. Both the suboptimal levels of significance for the pre-test estimator in a special case and suboptimal values of shrinkage coefficients for the shrinkage estimator are obtained based on a regret function. Electronically rewritable paper requires two basic components. A substrate and something electrically controllable that can serve as the ink. If the epaper material has good enough image retention, it can be written by a device analogous to a printer, and then taken out and used just like a normal sheet of paper.
