The article discusses the history of Colombia. Pope Paul VI opened the Latin American bishops' conference in Medellin in 1968 and urged the involvement of the church in socioeconomic reform, but the priest Camilo Torres became upset with the church and joined the National Liberation Army that marked the start of the religious movement liberation theology. Colombia had experienced countless tragedies in its quest for social and economic justice and for rightful ownership of land and resources.
