ASIDE from their carefree cool, there is a simple reason why the youthful, slightly coquettish side-swept hairstyles at Prada (left) and Alexander Wang (above) were the most talked-about looks at the recent fashion shows. ''They're attainable,'' said Guido Palau, the British hairstylist behind both of them. ''Women are attracted to that.'' Indeed, pigtails and a sporty Brooke Shields-circa-1980 side-braid are easy to achieve at home, but do they work on everyone? ''Well, you have to be a bit careful with the pigtails,'' Mr. Palau cautioned. ''Some women can adapt them into a ponytail with the front still swept teasingly to the side, but the braid can be very beautiful on older women. Look at Georgia O'Keeffe.'' [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
