In chemical science research progress, reading other researcher research paper in same type area, will speed up the generation of their own research method. Researchers want to automate the extraction of information from charts in paper, because there are detail of what element involved and how experiment environment changed in the charts. This paper designs and implements a line chart information extraction algorithm using neural networks and Hough Transform. First, a large dataset of line charts was collected and annotated to provide a foundation for neural network training. Secondly, detect the line charts in the literature and save them as separate images. Then, the Hough transform line detection algorithm was used to detect the axes, and the line charts were segmented. For each segmented part, different recognition algorithms were designed to identify various elements in the line charts, including axes, line regions, and legends. To validate the effectiveness of the algorithm, experimental tests were conducted in the field of inorganic catalysis, automatically extracting information from line charts in the literature. The experimental results show that the designed algorithm can accurately recognize various elements in line charts and effectively extract experimental data. Compared with traditional manual methods, automated extraction not only saves a considerable amount of time but also improves the accuracy and consistency of data extraction on paper fast reading. In summary, this method provides researchers with an efficient tool that accelerates the acquisition and comparison of experimental data, thereby advancing the progress of related research electronic document.

In the field of paper conservation and archival research, identifying the raw materials of paper is important to elucidate its history and culture. As the most basic element of the raw materials for paper, fibers have not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, we propose a nondestructive method for estimating paper fibers from macro photographs ( $4000\times3000$ pixels) captured using a digital camera. The proposed method consists of background patch (500 pixels per side) detection (BPD), wherein background regions with no text are identified; patch fiber classification (PFC), wherein background patches obtained after BPD are analyzed for fiber classification; and paper fiber estimation (PFE), wherein macro images obtained after PFC are analyzed for fiber estimation. BPD and PFC are employed to perform patch-based classification on segmented macro images, which are reconstructed during PFE to obtain the final fiber estimation results. We performed experiments using 1337 macro images (64176 patches) to evaluate the fiber estimation accuracy for kozo, mitsumata, and gampi via three-fold cross-validation. The average fiber classification accuracy for patch images was observed to be 79.1%; accordingly, the average fiber estimation accuracy for macro images was 85.8%. Experimental results indicated that PFE can be realized in a nondestructive manner on macro images of paper captured using a digital camera.

Evaluating the long-term influence of academic papers in the early stage after publication is crucial for research management and decision-making. Although the total number of citations has been considered as a valid indicator to measure the academic influence of papers, there are still some bottleneck problems in predicting future citation counts. Firstly, it remains a challenging task to select the reasonable features due to the diversity of model features. Secondly, some prediction models are overly complex and their defects may cause prediction bias or even errors. Finally, the most important thing is that very few models possess long-term predictive ability. This paper proposes a prediction model that can provide an early evaluation of the long-term citations, or the long-term influence, of academic papers. The model uses features available immediately after publication or after a certain period of time. Taking academic papers in Information Science and Library Science as our experimental subject, we train the model using three machine learning algorithms and find that the artificial neural network performs satisfactorily. Our findings may offer guidance for research management and decision-making.

In the era of Industry 4.0, digital transformation has spurred the swift advancement of technologies, including intelligent predictive maintenance scheduling, prognostics and health management. The accurate prediction of remaining useful life plays a crucial role in these technologies as it extends power equipment’s safe operational duration and decreases the maintenance costs associated with unforeseen shutdowns. Also, the increased accessibility of data for monitoring system conditions has paved the way for the more immense adoption of machine learning models in prognostics and health management for power transformers. At the moment, with the ever-increasing demand for electricity, there is a corresponding increase in the degradation processes of power transformers. Transformers insulation system and more importantly, the paper insulation happens to be the principal part where the degradation is prominent. Therefore, an accurate prediction of the insulating paper condition through its degree of polymerization is required to guarantee the reliability of power transformers. In this regard, the predictions, reliability, and health monitoring of this power equipment can be actualized by modeling the degradation of transformer insulation paper through several machine learning frameworks. In this view, this review paper has been drafted not only to serve as a guide for researchers interested in the fields of transformer insulation system fault prognosis but also to offer insights into potential research directions as existing literature in modeling and evaluating transformer paper insulation is presented.

Computer scientists often publish their source code accompanying their publications, prominently using code repositories across various domains. Despite the concurrent existence of scholarly articles and their associated official code repositories, explicit references linking the two are often missing. Traditionally, identifying whether scholarly content and code repositories pertain to the same research project requires manual inspection, a time-consuming task. This paper proposes a deep learning-based algorithm for automatically matching scholarly articles with their corresponding official code repositories. Our findings indicate that the most common linking information includes the paper title and BibTeX entries, typically found in the repository’s readme document. In this study, we employed SPECTER for vector embedding of paper and repository metadata. Utilizing these embedding representations with the Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM), our method achieved an F1 score of 0.94. Moreover, combining our best model with a rule-based approach improved performance by 5.31%. This study successfully delineates a connection between academic papers and associated official code repositories, minimizing reliance on explicit bibliographic information in repositories.

Flashover characteristics are closely related to the electrical field distribution on the surface of oil-paper insulation. In this study, the effects of electrical field and DC voltage components on the creepage flashover characteristics of oil-paper insulation under combined AC-DC voltage (CADV) are investigated using two electrode models. The results demonstrate that when the DC voltage component is large, the flashover voltage under the influence of strong parallel electric field component is approximately 1.2 times higher than that under the influence of strong normal electric field component. When the DC voltage component value increases under the influence of strong normal electric field component, the value of corresponding AC voltage component of the creepage flashover voltage exhibits a decreasing trend. It is believed that due to the strong normal electric field component, the electrons intensify the collision on the surface of the insulating pressboard. Under the influence of the DC voltage component and due to the presence of space charge on the insulating pressboard, the distribution shape of carbonized particles on the surface of the insulating pressboard after creepage flashover is different. Furthermore, the instantaneous energy release during creepage flashover under CADV is higher than that under AC voltage, and the greater the DC voltage component value, more severe is the damage to the fibers on the insulating pressboard surface.

Cardiotocography (CTG) is a clinical procedure that is used to track and gauge the severity of fetal distress. Although CTG is the most often used equipment to monitor and assess the health of the fetus, the high rate of false positive results due to visual interpretation significantly contributes to needless surgical delivery or delayed intervention. In this study, a novel approach is introduced where both printing CTG paper is digitized and a machine learning approach is employed to detect the abnormality in the digitized CTG signal. Image processing-based preprocessing steps are employed to make the printing of CTG paper more convenient to extract the CTG signal. Various signal-processing techniques are used to calibrate the extracted CTG signal. Then, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is used to decompose the CTG signal into its frequency components and instantaneous frequency and spectral entropy features are extracted. After feature normalization and feature selection with ReliefF algorithm, support vector machines (SVM) is used for the classification of the normal and abnormal classes. A novel dataset is used in the experimental works and various performance evaluation metrics are used for the evaluation of the achievement of the proposed method. 10-fold cross-validation-based experiments show that the proposed method is quite efficient in abnormality detection in printing CTG papers where an average accuracy score of around 90.0% is produced.

Recently, Polarization Depolarization current (PDC) measurement is widely accepted time domain spectroscopy-based method for assessing the insulation condition. Various performance parameters like Dissipation factor (%tan $\delta $ ), Paper Moisture (%pm), Dielectric Adsorption Ratio (DAR), Polarization index (PI) etc. can be estimated by analyzing the PDC data. During field measurement various factors influences the recorded PDC data. As per existing literature, presence of low frequency noise, effect of temperature variation and influence of residual charge are common during field measurement. These factors significantly affect recorded polarization current and hence estimated performance parameters. Hence, analysis using recorded polarization current data may provide misleading information regarding insulation condition. Under such practical situation where polarization current is affected by above mentioned factors that generally observed during field measurement, depolarization current should be used for analysis of insulation condition. The depolarization current does not influence by such external factors. The present work shows the importance of depolarization current where polarization current is influenced by external low frequency noise and residual charge. The analysis firstly applied on sample prepared in the laboratory and then on data collected from real life in-situ transformers. The results obtained from the analysis shows that the data obtained from depolarization current is more reliable.

In on-site measurement, as the transformer’s structure is often unknown, the application of frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) is greatly limited in moisture assessment of transformer. This paper proposes a moisture assessment method for oil-immersed paper based on the dynamic characteristic frequency even for an unknown transformer structure. FDS tests are performed on the oil-paper insulation, corresponding oil-immersed paper, and mineral oil under different moisture conditions. The moisture criterion of oil-immersed paper and the influence of the structural parameters on the calculated frequency spectroscopy at different frequencies are discussed. It is concluded that the moisture criterion’s effectiveness, which indicates the sensitivity of assessed moisture content to the error of the tan $\delta $ , changes at different frequencies. Moreover, there are some frequencies at which tan $\delta $ is not influenced by structural parameters and is close to the measured value, which are regarded as “characteristic frequencies.” Based on the characteristic frequency, the moisture content of oil-immersed paper is assessed according to the frequency spectroscopy of oil-paper insulation without the structural parameters. The result shows that the assessing frequency changes under different moisture conditions, and the error of the assessed moisture content is less than 0.1%.

Reading newly-published papers in time is important for researchers since these papers provide the latest research findings. However, it is challenging to retrieve newly-published papers through common query-based search engines because the papers lacking sufficient citations and links are usually ranked too low in the search list. To this end, we design a time-aware joint model to infer users’ preference for the newly-published papers with the help of subsidiary relations of social and article linkages. The temporal preference of researchers for articles is jointly modeled with social and article relations by a group of matrices sharing common dimensions of researchers and articles. A joint multi-relational factorization algorithm is devised to approximate the latent factor matrices along with a temporal recommendation algorithm to predict the personalized new referential papers based on the factor matrices. The experimental results on real-world datasets show that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

The hydrophilic nature of cellulose compromises the dielectric properties of kraft paper insulation when exposed to water and moisture. The effort to address this setback is an ongoing research enquiry. In the present work, surface-modified rutile-titanium dioxide nanoparticles (rutile-TiO2 NPs) are reinforced into cellulose pulp to fabricate a nanocomposite kraft paper insulation. Surface modification of the nanofiller particles is intended to reduce the hydrophilicity of the resultant nanocomposite kraft paper insulation. The nanoparticles (rutile-TiO2 NPs) improve other dielectric properties of the insulation. The chemicals used for the surface modification of the rutile-TiO2 NPs were the alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) and alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA). The nanofiller retention, dispersion and hydrophobic properties of the resultant reinforced kraft paper were experimentally analyzed. The results show that more than 50% of the nanofillers were retained within the reinforced kraft paper and translated to 1.5% by weight loading of the nanoparticles in the kraft paper. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed evenly distributed nanofillers, with some traces of agglomeration. The moisture absorption property of the kraft paper specimen modified with rutile-TiO2 NPs surface conditioned with 5 vol/vol% ASA improved by 74% compared to the control (reference) specimen. Water vapor transmission rate of the surface-modified nanoparticles reinforced kraft paper insulation decreased by 30%. Compared to the unfilled paper, the contact angle of water droplets on the surface of the reinforced kraft paper improved by 12%. Water absorption rate improved by being 4 times slower in paper specimens containing rutile-TiO2 NPs surface conditioned with 5 vol/vol% ASA. Dielectric dissipation factor measurement results showed that the specimen modified with rutile-TiO2 NPs surface conditioned with 5 vol/vol% ASA had 40% lower dielectric losses than the reference samples. This study, therefore, has successfully improved the hydrophobic properties of kraft paper by filling it with surface-modified rutile TiO2 using 5% ASA as the nanoparticle surfactant.

Robotic process automation (RPA) is automating various job processes in many offices. However, most existing RPA systems automate only processes that are performed on computers. It is highly desirable to develop physical RPA systems that incorporate real robots to automate physical job processes. When developing physical RPA systems, handling paper is particularly important because many physical office jobs involve handling paper documents. However, it is not easy for robots to handle paper because paper is fragile. To address this issue, we propose an electroadhesive paper gripper in this study. The use of electroadhesion enables a robot to handle paper in a simple, non-destructive, and quiet manner. We provide (1) a mechanism for lifting a sheet of paper without accurate control of robot hands, (2) a mechanism for a small gripper to hold a large sheet of paper without bending it, and (3) a method for quickly releasing a sheet of paper. Furthermore, we apply the proposed paper gripper to a document-sorting robot. The robot that we have developed automatically arranges a given stack of paper documents in a predetermined order (e.g., alphabetical or numerical). Experimental results show the validity of the paper gripper and the sorting robot.

This study aims to develop a prediction model for paper quality assessment to support technology-assisted peer review. The prediction technique is intended to reduce the review burden, which is becoming a critical issue in today’s paper submission process. However, most existing works on this topic were built by involving the reviewers’ comments, which is considered unfair and inapplicable for reducing the review burden. Therefore, our prediction method relies only on features extracted from the paper to address this issue. The method covers three tasks as follows: two are classification tasks and one is a regression task. The classification tasks predict the final review decision (accepted-rejected) and estimate the paper quality (good-poor), while a regression task predicts the review scores. Additionally, the classification and regression tasks are implemented using three main features i.e., citing sentence features developed based on the labeling scheme of citation functions, regular sentence features created by applying the label of citation functions to non-citation text, and reference-based features constructed by identifying the source of citations. Furthermore, the classification experiments on the dataset obtained from the International Conference on Learning Representations 2017–2020 showed that our methods are more effective in the good-poor task than the accepted-rejected task by demonstrating the best accuracy of 0.75 and 0.73, respectively. Moreover, we also reached a satisfactory recall of 0.99 using only the citing sentence features to obtain as many good papers as possible in the good-poor task. Our regression experiments indicate that the best result in predicting the average review score is higher than the individual review score by showing Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 1.34 and 1.71, respectively.

The availability of the raw materials needed to produce fibre is decreasing as demand for fibre increases over time. In an effort, to preserve natural biodiversity and improve waste management, this research aims to substitute available raw materials for wood fibres. Empty fruit bunch (EFB) is regarded as waste in the oil palm industry and is abundantly available as a renewable energy source, particularly in Southeast Asian countries. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the utilisation of EFB as a substitute for insulating paper in transformers. The morphology, degree of polymerization, tensile strength, thermal characteristics, permittivity, conductivity, and electrical properties (breakdown field strength and lightning impulse performance) of EFB were measured and compared to the properties of Kraft insulating paper. Using FESEM at a magnification of $500\times $ , the morphological properties were examined. Based on FTIR measurement, the chemical bonding between Kraft and EFB samples varied slightly. Compared to EFB, Kraft-pulped insulating paper has a higher degree of polymerization and the ability to endure high temperatures. Furthermore, the breakdown field strength performance demonstrates that Kraft insulating paper is 20.30% higher than EFB insulating paper. In terms of tensile strength and lightning impulse, EFB insulating paper demonstrated comparable performance to conventional insulating paper. A new approach to the manufacturing of EFB insulating paper could result in improvements to the material’s insulation qualities.

Thermal aging and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation are used as methods to prepare samples of kraft paper spanning its full lifecycle within a high-voltage transformer, from new to end of life. The mechanical break strain is correlated with the degree of polymerization (DP), representing a progressive deterioration of mechanical properties during aging. Subsequent exposure to oil flow mimicking both normal plant operation and reclamation activities shows that aged paper exposed to high rates of flow experiences noticeable surface roughening. Despite this, no measurable erosion occurs even after long-term temperature/flow cycling in used mineral oil containing a notable particulate content. This indicates that kraft paper is unlikely to be eroded by normal reclamation activities, even in a severely aged asset. This confirms the validity of using this approach to extend plant life. There is a relative lack of research on the development of creepage discharge in aged oil-paper insulation subjected to AC-DC combined voltage in converter transformers. In this study, based on the physical and chemical properties of oil-paper, we propose a sphere-plate electrode model to study the creepage discharge parameters and characteristic spectra of aged oil-paper subjected to AC-DC combined voltage. The results show that the creepage discharge inception voltage of aged oil-paper is related to the AC voltage component of the AC-DC combined voltage. However, when the DC voltage component is 60 kV, the flashover phenomenon was found to occur in one of the severely aged samples before the AC voltage was applied. Despite being subjected to the same DC voltage, the flashover phenomenon did not occur in three other samples aged to different degrees. Large-amplitude discharges were found to appear earlier in the severely aged samples. At the same creepage discharge stage, as the aging time of the oil-paper increased, the number of large-amplitude discharges was found to rapidly increase, and the time interval between adjacent discharges was found to gradually decrease. At each stage of the creepage discharge, the small-amplitude discharge has a “hump” shaped distribution. The larger the DC voltage component, the shorter the endurance time of aged oil-paper, and the more severe the damage to the oil-paper. The DC voltage component was found to have an accelerating effect on the development of creepage discharge in aged oil-paper insulation.

Rapid increase in scholarly publications on the web has posed a new challenge to the researchers in finding highly relevant and important research articles associated with a particular area of interest. Even a highly relevant paper is sometimes missed especially for novice researchers due to lack of knowledge and experience in finding and accessing the most suitable articles. Scholarly recommender system is a very appropriate tool for this purpose that can enable researchers to locate relevant publications easily and quickly. However, the main downside of the existing approaches is that their effectiveness is dependent on priori user profiles and thus, they cannot recommend papers to the new users. Furthermore, the system uses both public and non-public metadata and therefore, the system is unable to find similarities between papers efficiently due to copyright restrictions. Considering the above challenges, in this research work, a novel hybrid approach is proposed that separately combines a Content Based Filtering (CBF) recommender module and a Collaborative Filtering (CF) recommender module. Unlike previous CBF and CF approaches, public contextual metadata and paper-citation relationship information are effectively incorporated into these two approaches separately to enhance the recommendation accuracy. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, publicly available datasets were employed. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the baseline approaches in terms of standard metrics (precision, recall, F1-measure, mean average precision, and mean reciprocal rank), indicating that the proposed approach is more efficient in recommending scholarly publications.

The existing plethora of document classification techniques exploits different data sources either from the content or metadata of research articles. Various journal publishers like Springer, Elsevier, IEEE, etc., do not provide open access to the content of research articles, whereas metadata is freely available there. Metadata like title, keyword, and abstract can serve as a better alternative to the content in various scenarios. In the current literature, researchers have assessed the role of some of the metadata individually. We believe that the collective contribution of metadata parameters can play a significant role in classifying research papers. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the role of metadata, individually as well as in combinations to achieve the objective of research paper classification. Moreover, we have classified the research articles into ACM hierarchy root categories (e.g. general literature, hardware, software, etc.). In this comprehensive evaluation, we have assessed all the possible combinations of metadata features against different classifiers such as Random Forest, K Nearest Neighbor, and Decision Tree. The results of this research reveal that the title & keywords combination outperforms other combinations with an F-measure score of 0.88.

With the accelerating development of science and technology, the academic papers being published in various fields are increasing rapidly. Academic papers specially in science and technology fields are a crucial media for researchers who develop new technologies by identifying knowledge regarding the latest technological trends and conduct derivative studies in science and technology. Therefore, the continual collection of extensive academic papers, structuring of metadata, and construction of databases are significant tasks. However, research on automatic metadata extraction from Korean papers is not being actively conducted currently owing to insufficient Korean training data. We automatically constructed the largest labeled corpus in South Korea to date from 315,320 PDF papers belonging to 503 Korean academic journals and this labeled corpus can be used for training the models of automatic extraction for 12 metadata types from PDF papers. This labeled corpus is available at https://doi.org/10.23057/48. Moreover, we developed inspection process and guidelines for the automatically constructed data and performed a full inspection of the validation and testing data. The reliability of the inspected data was verified through the inter-annotator agreement measurement. Using our corpus, we trained and evaluated the BERT based transfer learning model to verify its reliability. Furthermore, we proposed new training methods that can improve the metadata extraction performance of Korean papers, and through these methods, we developed KorSciBERT-ME-J and KorSciBERT-ME-J+C models. The KorSciBERT-ME-J showed the highest performance with an F1 score of 99.36%, as well as robust performance in automatic metadata extraction from Korean academic papers in various formats.

Personalized PageRank is a variant of PageRank, widely developed for citation recommendation. However, the personalized PageRank that works with a vast amount and rich scholarly data still results in information overload. Sometimes, junior scholars still need help to arrange queries quickly because of limited domain knowledge. Senior researchers need reference papers regarding a similar topic they intend to search for and related topics as a new insight. In this research, scientific citation recommendation aims to find the most influential papers with similar and related topics. Related topic papers in serendipitous perspectives are reference papers that are novel, diversified and unexpected to a user. The unexpectedness of recommended papers can be papers with different topics to queries but still relevant. To accomplish these challenges, we propose a framework of scientific citation recommendation with serendipitous perspectives. The framework includes feature extraction of an academic citation network, selection of multi-topic communities, and ranking papers in the selected multi-topic communities by modified PageRank. Papers in the chosen communities tend to link to similar and related papers. Modified PageRank is an extension of personalized PageRank, which works on multi-topic communities and manuscript queries. The experiments reveal that the proposed models outperform some models of personalized PageRank and some models of Content-Based Filtering. The multi-topic communities-based models work more effectively than the baselines if they run in a large dataset since the topic communities become more cohesive.

Recently reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has attracted great attention because it can create a smart wireless environment. Hence it can enhance the capacity and coverage of the wireless network significantly. A thorough review of RISs has been presented in this paper focusing on the hardware aspect of the RIS. Beyond-5G/6G communication will have a smart propagation environment, where RIS can be used for such communications. RIS consists of various small unit cells. The unit cells should have some tunning mechanism to reflect or transmit the incoming waves in the desired direction. It is possible to tune the impedance of the unit cells using PIN diodes, varactor didoes, microelectromechanical (MEMS), thermal, and other ways. In this paper, the background of RIS has been discussed where RIS will play a significant role in beyond-5G/6G communications. We have also added the theoretical background of RIS and motivations to writing this paper. After that several published papers in the literature have been presented so that the readers can get an overall idea about the RIS and its hardware. Hence, this paper will be very useful for practitioner engineers and researchers. RISs have been presented in various tables and various parameters have been presented. We have discussed challenges and solutions for the hardware of the RIS design. We have also discussed potential research and research gap that can be explored in the future. Lastly, we have added a conclusion for this review paper. In our manuscript, we have added 154 references. There are various kinds of RIS available in the literature. We have added different types of RISs in this manuscript. The magnitude and phase of the reflection and transmission coefficients are the main parameters of any kind of RIS.

The paper manufacturing process is a large-scale process in which the control performance is required to be optimal in the machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD). This work focuses on CD control, which is more complicated than MD control. Uncertainties in the process arise from different sources, so there is a requirement for better modeling techniques. The control of paper profile properties, namely basis weight, moisture, and caliper, is done with the help of actuators that are distributed spatially. Basis weight is taken as the profile parameter in this work. The work aims to improve robust performance and simplify the control design problem. Here, $\mu $ synthesis methods are used for controller design, as this method provides guaranteed robust performance. To simplify the design problem two-dimensional modeling is explained explicitly. The conventional methods of $\mu $ analysis are extended to spatial coordinates. The performance of the $\mu $ synthesis designed method is compared with the open loop shaping method. Control performance is judged in terms of sensitivity, stability margin, $\sigma $ performance, and robust performance. The effectiveness of the developed $\mu $ synthesis designed method is demonstrated using the industrial example from the pulp and paper industry.

Nowadays many research articles are prefaced with research highlights to summarize the main findings of the paper. Highlights not only help researchers precisely and quickly identify the contributions of a paper, they also enhance the discoverability of the article via search engines. We aim to automatically construct research highlights given certain segments of a research paper. We use a pointer-generator network with coverage mechanism and a contextual embedding layer at the input that encodes the input tokens into SciBERT embeddings. We test our model on a benchmark dataset, CSPubSum, and also present MixSub, a new multi-disciplinary corpus of papers for automatic research highlight generation. For both CSPubSum and MixSub, we have observed that the proposed model achieves the best performance compared to related variants and other models proposed in the literature. On the CSPubSum dataset, our model achieves the best performance when the input is only the abstract of a paper as opposed to other segments of the paper. It produces ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2 and ROUGE-L F1-scores of 38.26, 14.26 and 35.51, respectively, METEOR score of 32.62, and BERTScore F1 of 86.65 which outperform all other baselines. On the new MixSub dataset, where only the abstract is the input, our proposed model (when trained on the whole training corpus without distinguishing between the subject categories) achieves ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2 and ROUGE-L F1-scores of 31.78, 9.76 and 29.3, respectively, METEOR score of 24.00, and BERTScore F1 of 85.25.

This special section of the IEEE Open Journal of Circuits and Systems (OJCAS) aims to highlight a selection of papers from 2022 IEEE Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems (APCCAS). Due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions, APCCAS 2022 was organised as a hybrid conference during 11 - 13 November 2022 in Shenzhen China. As the regional flagship conference of IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, APCCAS 2022 was driven by the theme “Building a Fully-connected AIoT World” to emphasize the CAS Society’s potential for finding multidisciplinary solutions to societal and industrial challenges. The papers in this special issue were selected from a comprehensive list of papers presented in the sessions of APCCAS 2022.

Researchers face difficulties in finding relevant papers to their research interest as the number of scientific publication is rapidly increasing on the web. Scientific paper recommenders have emerged as a leading solution to help researchers by automatically suggesting relevant and useful publications. Several approaches have been proposed on improving recommender systems. However, most existing approaches depend on priori user profiles, and thus they cannot recommend papers to new user. Furthermore, the existing approaches utilize non-public contextual information, and thus it cannot adequately find similarities between papers due to copyright restrictions. Also, the existing approaches consider only single level paper-citation relation to identify similarities between papers. Considering the above challenges, this paper presents a collaborative filtering based recommendation approach for scientific papers that does not depend on priori user profiles and which utilizes only public contextual information. Using citation context, we utilized 2-level paper-citation relations to find hidden associations between papers. The rational underlying this approach is that, two papers are co-occurred with same cited paper(s) and two papers are co-occurring with same citing paper(s) are significantly similar to some extent. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, publicly available datasets are used to conduct extensive experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach has significantly outperforms the baseline approaches in terms of precision, recall, F1, mean average precision, and mean reciprocal rank, which are commonly used information retrieval metrics. The novelty of this study is that, with the proposed approach, researchers are able to find relevant and useful publications over the internet regardless of their previous research experiences and research area.

In paper production, a jumbo reel is cut into multiple intermediate rolls, and each intermediate roll is then sheeted as finished goods. This problem is called a cutting stock problem and is proven to be NP-hard. The objective is to minimize material waste or trim loss from all the cuttings. In the case that any intermediate roll is not entirely used for its associated order, the intermediate roll itself could turn to be a dead stock. We use the concept of universal sizes of intermediate rolls to eliminate the dead stock. A pre-defined number of universal sizes of intermediate rolls is to be used to serve all the orders. The problem is solved using Reinforcement Artificial Bee Colony algorithm with Integer Linear Programming subroutine. This proposed approach is then tested with a set of 1,055 orders and 127 different sizes of sheet papers from a paper manufacturer. The results reveal that our method outperforms other algorithms. Our method offers the total trim loss of 3.51%, compared to the trim loss reported by the industry of at least 5%. This approach not only reduces the number of partially cut rolls, but also decreases the number of the jumbo reels needed to serve all the orders. Therefore, both the inventory cost and material cost can be saved.

This paper investigates the impact of institutes and papers over time based on the heterogeneous institution-citation network. A new model, IPRank, is introduced to measure the impact of institution and paper simultaneously. This model utilises the heterogeneous structural measure method to unveil the impact of institution and paper, reflecting the effects of citation, institution, and structural measure. To evaluate the performance, the model first constructs a heterogeneous institution-citation network based on the American Physical Society (APS) dataset. Subsequently, PageRank is used to quantify the impact of institution and paper. Finally, impacts of same institution are merged, and the ranking of institutions and papers is calculated. Experimental results show that the IPRank model better identifies universities that host Nobel Prize laureates, demonstrating that the proposed technique well reflects impactful research.

Trap plays an important role in the charge transportation of three-layer oil-paper and the investigation of trap parameters at different degradation degree is of great significance for further research of the partial discharge (PD) mechanism. This article considers the turn-to-turn structure of on-board traction transformer. A defect model of three-layer oil-paper insulation was designed for PD test. The PD degradation samples are selected from the inception of PD to the breakdown of PD to study the characteristics of surface potential decay on degradation samples by using isothermal surface potential decay method. Given that, the trap distribution at different degradation stages was calculated and its influence on PD characteristics was investigated. The result shows that AC fluctuation voltages caused by inter-harmonic has a great influence on PD distribution, surface charge distribution and trap distribution. With the increase of degradation, the decay rate of surface potential increases and the decay rate of AC fluctuation voltages is larger than that pure AC. And also, the number of shallow trap with AC fluctuation voltages is larger than that with pure AC. The rate of free charge increases with the number of shallow trap increasing. More free electrons involves in the process of PD, accelerating the aging rate of three-layer oil paper samples. Therefore, it can be concluded that surface charge and trap distribution are helpful to clarify PD mechanism.

The oil-paper insulation system is widely used for the insulation purposes of power transformers as a result of its ability to withstand high thermal and electrical stresses. The presence of a gas cavity between impregnated papers layer is a serious problem. When localized breakdown takes place within this cavity, partial discharge (PD) occurs and ages the rest of the insulation system. This aging phenomenon declines the expected life time of the insulation system and subsequently the life time of the power transformers. Dissolved gas analysis is a recommended technique that is used in order to assess the state of the insulation system inside the transformers. In this paper, PD is recorded in the case of gas cavity presence between the layers of the impregnated papers under the effect of AC and DC voltage stress. This record is extended from the instance of PD inception until the breakdown of the whole insulation system. Furthermore, the concentration of the gases that dissolve in the insulating oil due to the aging of the impregnated paper is measured eight times during the record of the PD. Finally, the degradation of the insulating papers is studied optically through the use of a microscope at different stages of the aging test. Depending on PD measurements, dissolved gas analysis (DGA) results, and the optical study of the paper aging, the evolution of the aging of oil-paper insulation system as a result of internal PD is declared when AC and DC voltage stresses are applied. It is obtained that the aging evolutionary process totally differs with the alteration of the applied voltage.

Insulated tubular busbar is a new type of current-carrying equipment with excellent performance. However, the research on this equipment is insufficient because of the short application and the lack of technical digestion, which has resulted in many accidents. In this paper, the full-scale model of epoxy-impregnated-paper insulated tubular busbar with bubble defects was designed and produced, its electrical breakdown process was investigated by withstand voltage test. In the experiment, the failure mode of breakdown caused by gas expansion was found for the first time. The research showed that the electrical-mechanical breakdown process could be divided into two stages: gas increase stage and breakdown threshold stage. The research also obtained the characteristics and the change criterions of the two stages. The gas in the bubble defects generated from epoxy decomposition which caused by partial discharge. When the gas pressure exceeds the critical fracture toughness of the bubble defects wall, the unstable crack extension occurs, therefore, improving the ability about resistance to partial discharge of epoxy resin or improving the fracture toughness of epoxy resin by modifying would enhance the breakdown performance of insulated tubular busbar. The result also has reference significance for other epoxy-impregnated-paper insulated electrical equipment.

The explicitly numerical or well-defined correlations between the dielectrics responses (DRs) and dielectric essences of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) insulation have not been fully understood yet. As a result, it is rather difficult to quantitatively diagnose the critical insulation condition, like determining moisture content in insulation paper (MCP) of power equipment only using electrical-based techniques such as frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS). To obtain MCP value, from a new perspective of parametric study on the circuital DR equivalence of OIP insulation-extended Debye model (EDM), the present contribution introduces a novel approach by exploring the pattern when EDM parameters vary with MCP and temperatures T. Further, mathematical correlations are developed between sensitive R-C values and MCP-T values. On the above analysis, small-scale physical models of real-life transformer bushings were prepared as test samples. Their OIP condenser bodies were artificially absorbed different controlled quantities of moisture and conditioned at different temperatures to record corresponding FDS results. Then a hybrid genetic algorithm combined with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was proposed to estimate the EDM parameters by fitting the measured FDS data. Sensitive parameters therein were identified using subspectrum decomposition and formulated with MCP-T values so that a reliable moisture content estimation can be achieved once the testing temperature and FDS recordings of an insulation body are known.

This article adds more information to the problem of natural ester use as an electroinsulating fluid in cellulose paper-oil systems, e.g., for use in power transformers. An accelerated thermal aging (120, 140 and 160 °C) of samples consisting of cellulose paper (transformerboard), a treated natural ester (filtered, basic Al2O3, 0.53% DBPC), a copper plate and moisture was studied. Research was especially focused on the impact of moisture on the aging of the above system. Samples with three different oil moisture levels (80, 143 and 305 ppm water content) were subjected to thermal aging to display the change in a selection of properties (tanδ, acid number, water content). For a study of the polarization effects, broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) was performed to observe the complex permittivity and conductivity dependencies on the temperature and frequency (±30 °C, 0.01-107 Hz). Havriliak-Negami (H-N) diagrams were used to further understand the results. The degradation products during thermal aging were recognized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Hydrolysis and hydrogenation occurred in the insulating system with a natural ester aged by elevated temperatures, which is in contrast to CO2 formation in the case of electric aging. The results showed an increase in the acid number, dissipation factor, and number of hydrolysis and hydrogenation products. Furthermore, changes in polarization were observed as a consequence of the thermal aging of paper-natural ester insulation system with the presence of copper and moisture.

The oil-paper insulation in power transformer is under a complicated environment, and there is little research on the combined effects of winding vibration-generated mechanical stress and thermal stress on the aging of insulating paper. To investigate the effects of combined mechanical-thermal stress on the aging properties of insulating paper, this paper carried out accelerated aging test using the as-designed mechanical-thermal stress combined aging oven in the aging environment at the temperature of 130 °C, and the mechanical stress intensities of 1 MPa, 1.5 MPa and 2 MPa. Besides, the degree of polymerization (DP), tensile strength, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests were performed on the aging paper samples. The test results suggested that, the combined mechanical-thermal aging might be regarded as thermal aging with lower degradation activation energy; the DP and tensile strength of insulating paper markedly declined during the mechanical-thermal aging process. At the same time, mechanical stress promoted the destruction of glycosidic bond, intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds, and increased the insulating paper cracks and holes. Typically, the above factors accelerated the aging of insulating paper. Finally, an improved degradation rate equation for insulating paper with consideration of mechanical stress was put forward.

An electrical tree discharge model of multilayer insulation paper was prepared, and a voltage of 20 kV was used for electrical tree cultivation and initiation tests. Based on the microscopic image information and partial discharge (PD) information during the aging of the electrical tree, the development of electrical tree discharges between layers of paper comprising epoxy resin-impregnated paper insulation was studied. The results show that, by analysing PD information such as the discharge volume phase spectrum and the discharge repetition rate phase spectrum, the development of the electrical tree branch progresses in four stages: initial, growth, stagnation, and bursting. During the growth and stagnation stages, the main discharge paths of the electrical tree are mainly formed, and there are many filamentous fibres on the path edge. During the burst stage, more branches will be formed on the electrical tree, which will cause the greatest damage to the insulation. With the extension of the electrical tree path, the discharge magnitude and discharge times also increase. There are specific discharge patterns in different growth stages of the electrical tree, and the number of discharge events in each positive half-cycle is significantly greater than that in a negative half-cycle. Combining the microscopic image information and PD information during the aging of such an electrical tree, a theoretical basis for evaluating insulation state by PD monitoring is realised. The long-chain molecules of cellulose and epoxy resin break bonds and oxidise, which decompose into a large number of free radicals, monosaccharides, and other low-molecular-weight products.

This paper presents a broadband, simple, re-useable and low-cost approach for noninvasive sweat monitoring using a passive microwave circuit and a cellulose filter paper as a superstrate. The proposed sensor is composed of filter paper with the ability to absorb the sample liquid under test (LUT) placed on top of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line. Various samples of sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions with concentrations in the range of 0.01-2 mol/L and models of artificial sweat are used to test the proposed sensor. The difference in transmission coefficient (S21) between dry and wet states is used to determine the concentrations of tested solutions in the band of 1-6 GHz. The sensor detects concentrations as low as 0.01 mol/L (0.58 g/L) and quantities as low as 137 μL with a maximum sensitivity of 46.7 dB/g/L. The proposed sensor presents a simple approach to sample and characterize liquids with enhanced sensitivity and consistent performance using microwave signals.

The low frequency section of frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) of oil-paper insu- lation system can effectively reflect the ageing state and moisture of the oil-immersed paper. Meanwhile, steady-state insulation resistance is the one of indexes for the condition of transformer. In actual measurement, these two both are time-consuming and poor accessibility, thereby restraining their field applications. Aim at this problem, this paper analyses the polarization process of the oil-paper insulation in transformer, and adopts a low frequency equivalent circuit model for the oil-paper insulation to characterize the polarization process at low frequency. The simulated annealing particle swarm optimization (SAPSO) algorithm is proposed to identify the parameters in equivalent circuit, which are affected by change of insulation state. Compared with the experimental results, the errors of the steady-state insulation resistance and the tan δ below 10-3 Hz, which are calculated by the identified parameters, are less than 2.5%. This method can avoid the influence from external environment and reduce the measurement time. The time and frequency domain parameters calculated can provide reference for the ageing assessment of oil-immersed paper.

This paper presents the prediction of aging state of oil impregnated insulating Kraft paper using textural properties. Under conditions of prolonged thermal stress, the insulating capacity of Kraft paper decreases due to carbonization and degradation of cellulose. To analyze these effects, a new accelerated aging kit is developed for the experiments. Four groups of samples are collected, and the morphology is examined. Texture feature is extracted for the samples using normalization and Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). Supervised (Support Vector Machine (SVM)) and unsupervised (K-means) machine intelligence methods are trained to classify images based on the feature. In addition, new samples are checked for feasibility of the prediction of aging state. The calculated training accuracy of SVM is 92.67%, and for k-means is 95.0%, on the other hand, the testing accuracy of SVM is 91.0%, and for k-means is 92.6%. Therefore, this machine intelligence-based methodology using image features is effective in classifying the aging state of the Kraft Insulating Paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Moisture content and aging of oil-paper insulation are two important factors that cause deterioration of the insulation performance of power transformers. The water molecules and aging products are polar, which affects the dielectric response characteristics of the insulation system. Currently, the dielectric response testing technology has realized non-destructive evaluation of the moisture content of transformer insulation. However, the changes in the dielectric response caused by aging products are easily concealed by the influence of moisture, which makes the diagnostic technology ineffective for use in the evaluation of the aging of the oil-paper system. In order to avoid drawback, a new method utilizing frequency domain dielectric spectroscopy (FDS) and the water balance characteristics of the oil-paper insulation is proposed in this paper to evaluate the aging state of oil-paper insulation. The aging of oil-paper insulation will affect the water balance between oil and paper. In this paper, the experimental studies have shown that the water distribution coefficient between oil and paper and the degree of polymerization (DP) of the insulating paper shows a significant linear relationship. Accordingly, in this paper, FDS curves were used to evaluate the moisture content in the insulating paper, oil samples were taken to measure the moisture content in oil, and then the ratio of moisture content in oil and paper were calculated as the aging characteristic parameter. The linear relationship between the characteristic parameter and DP was used to evaluate the aging state of oil-paper insulation. The feasibility of the proposed method is preliminarily verified using oil-paper insulation samples at different aging states and with different moisture levels in the laboratory.

In forensic document analysis, the authenticity of a document must be properly checked in the context of suspected forgery. Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) is a non-invasive way of detecting fraudulent papers in a multipage document. The occurrence of a forged paper in a multi-page document may have a substantial difference from rest of the papers in its age, type, color, texture, and so on. Each pixel in an HSI data can be used as the material fingerprint for the spatial point it corresponds to. Hence, hyperspectral data of paper samples made of the same substance have similar characteristics and can be grouped into a single cluster. Similarly, paper samples made of different substances have different spectral properties. This paper relies on this heuristic and proposes a tensor based clustering framework for hyperspectral paper data, with an application to detect the forged papers in multi-page documents. Information embedded in the hyperspectral patches of the papers to be clustered is arranged into individual lateral slices of a third-order tensor in this framework. Further, this work employs the self-expressiveness property of submodules and an objective function is formulated to extract self-expressive representation tensor with low multirank and f-diagonal structure. Objective function of the proposed method incorporates $l_{\frac {1}{2}}$ -induced Tensor Nuclear Norm (TNN) and $l_{\frac {1}{2}}$ regularization to impart better low rankness and f-diagonal structure to the representation tensor. Experimental results of the proposed method were compared to the state-of-the-art subspace clustering approaches. The results demonstrate improved performance of the proposed method over the existing clustering algorithms.

Currency recognition has always been a troublesome task for blind and visually impaired people (BVIP). The problem is more severe in developing countries such as India, where there is still a lack of robust currency recognition systems. BVIP primarily relies on size variations and patterns such as intaglio printings for recognizing the underlying currency denominations. Most of the current Indian legal tenders resemble in size, thus making the identification process more strenuous. Also, the engraved patterns are not as distinctive as BVIP standards, and they fade over time. For an automated paper currency recognition system, issues such as folded or partial views, uneven illumination, and background clutter make it non-trivial and challenging. This paper ventures to present an end-to-end and robust framework for assisting BVIP in recognizing the Indian paper currency denomination. This paper presents a lightweight network, IPCRNet, useful in a resource-constrained environment such as low/medium level smartphones. The proposed network is based on Dense connection, Multi-Dilation, and Depth-wise separable convolution layers. Additionally, we congregated one of the most diversified Indian paper currency image dataset with more than 50,000 images belonging to almost all denominations in circulation. A customized and publically available android application, “Roshni-Currency recognizer”, has also been introduced. The experimental results on multiple datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model. IPCRNet improves the classification accuracy by more than 2% on the proposed dataset compared to the state-of-the-art networks.
