This thesis demonstrates the value of theoretical approaches in the discovery of new superconducting materials. It reports a detailed study of the recently discovered nickel-oxide (nickelate) superconductors using multiple first-principles computational tools, from density functional theory to dynamical mean field theory. In the context of superconductivity, discoveries have generally been linked to serendipitous experimental discovery; this thesis reports some of the few examples of predictions of new superconductors that have later been realized in practice, a prime example of the significance of the methodology it expounds. Overall, it represents a seminal systematic work in the electronic structure theory of the emergent field of nickelate superconductivity.

It builds upon the established theory of Richards-Wolf (1959), providing numerous real-world examples that illustrate both spin and orbital Hall effects near the focal point. This book focuses on the study of the dynamical properties of hadron resonances, especially their transition processes by electromagnetic and strong interactions, by using the holographic quantum chromodynamics (QCD) model. Understanding the nature of hadrons leads to revealing non-perturbative phenomena that are prominent in the low-energy region of QCD. However, there remain many open questions regarding the nature of resonant states. Holographic QCD is one of the most powerful methods to elucidate non-perturbative phenomena in QCD. We will attempt to investigate the dynamical properties of hadron resonances using the Sakai-Sugimoto model, which has achieved much success in the study of hadron physics. In particular, we studied the transition process of hadrons through the calculation of the form factors of them employing the approach of holographic QCD. The book contains a systematic review of the treatment of hadron physics by the Sakai-Sugimoto model. It further covers how to calculate the form factors of baryons through the calculation of the n-point function from holographic QCD. It also includes remarks on the modern understanding of hadron physics. The method of collective coordinate quantization of solitons—Skyrmion and Instanton—is also explained in a concise manner. These are useful not only for students and young researchers interested in this field.

This book presents fundamental relations between random walks on graphs and field theories of mathematical physics. Such relations have been explored for several decades and remain a rapidly developing research area in probability theory.The main objects of study include Markov loops, spanning forests, random holonomies, and covers, and the purpose of the book is to investigate their relations to Bose fields, Fermi fields, and gauge fields. This book describes the direct and inverse problems of the multidimensional Schrödinger operator with a periodic potential, a topic that is especially important in perturbation theory, constructive determination of spectral invariants and finding the periodic potential from the given Bloch eigenvalues. It provides a detailed derivation of the asymptotic formulas for Bloch eigenvalues and Bloch functions in arbitrary dimensions while constructing and estimating the measure of the iso-energetic surfaces in the high-energy regime. Moreover, it presents a unique method proving the validity of the Bethe–Sommerfeld conjecture for arbitrary dimensions and arbitrary lattices. Using the perturbation theory constructed, it determines the spectral invariants of the multidimensional operator from the given Bloch eigenvalues. Some of these invariants are explicitly expressed by the Fourier coefficients of the potential, making it possible to determine the potential constructively using Bloch eigenvalues as input data. One of the main unanswered question of modern Physics is'How does gravity behave at small scales?'. The aim of this thesis is to illustrate in a comprehensive but accessible way how to look for deviations from Einstein's theory of General Relativity in this regime, looking at the simplest celestial bodies: static and spherically symmetric ones.With a conservative and bottom-up approach, at smaller scales the first corrections to the action of General Relativity are generally considered to be terms quadratic in the curvature tensors; while these modifications do not cure the inconsistency between gravity and quantum mechanics, the solutions of this theory are plausible candidates to be the first-order corrections of the classical ones.Even with such simple modifications, a striking picture emerges from the study of isolated objects: the unique Schwarzschild solution of General Relativity is only a rare bird in the set of solutions, with non-Schwarzschild black holes, wormholes and naked singularities appearing as possible substitutes.Tailored to graduate students and researchers entering this field, this thesis shows how to construct these new solutions from action principles, how to characterize their metric, how to study their physical properties, such as their stability or Thermodynamics, and how to look for phenomenological signatures.

This book is a comprehensive guide to pseudo-Hermitian random matrices, their properties, and their role in many models that are relevant to physical processes. The book starts by showing how the concept of pseudo-Hermiticity emerged from studies of PT-symmetric systems which aroused the interest of the random matrix theory community. The chapters that follow discuss the consequences of the pseudo-Hermitian condition to the eigen-decomposition of non-Hermitian matrices, and an investigation of pseudo-Hermitian random matrices in tridiagonal form, discussing the scenario with real eigenvalues, and the appearance of complex eigenvalues generated by unbound and non-positive metrics. Subsequently, the author introduces pseudo-Hermitian Gaussian matrices and their properties including characteristic polynomials, and statistical properties of their eigenvalues. This book builds bridges between two yet separated branches of theoretical and mathematical chemistry: Chemical Graph Theory and Electronic Structure Calculations. This book provides a comprehensive overview of a computationally efficient approach for modelling the phase behaviour of multicomponent alloys from first principles, describing both short- and long-range atomic ordering tendencies. The study of multicomponent alloy systems, which combine three or more base elements in near-equal ratios, has garnered significant attention in materials science due to the potential for the creation of novel materials with superior properties for a variety of applications. High-entropy alloys, which contain four or more base elements, have emerged as a particularly fascinating subset of these systems, demonstrating extraordinary strength and fracture resistance, among other desirable properties. The book presents a novel modelling approach for studying the phase behaviour of these systems, which is based on a perturbative analysis of the internal energy of the disordered alloy as evaluated within the Korringa–Kohn–Rostoker (KKR) formulation of density functional theory (DFT), using the coherent potential approximation (CPA) to average over chemical disorder. Application of a Landau-type theory to an approximate form of the Gibbs free energy enables direct inference of chemical disorder/order transitions. In addition, the perturbative analysis facilitates extraction of atom-atom effective pair interactions for further atomistic simulations. The connection between the arrangement of atoms in a material and its magnetic properties is also studied.
