Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler, author of the 1926 novella 'Dream Story' adapted for Stanley Kubrick's last film 'Eyes Wide Shut', trained as a doctor at the same medical school as Sigmund Freud. The early period of Schnitzler's life saw him pursuing a dual career as a doctor and a writer. Freud, writing to Schnitzler in 1922 to congratulate him on his 60th birthday, explained that he regarded him as his literary alter ego. However those who describe Schnitzler as Freud's literary disciple are being unfair since Schnitzler's fiction appears to have anticipated Freud's findings in some respects.
