The article discusses luxury homes in the U.S. built using rammed earth construction. Walls in the Spokane, Washington home of Stephen Start were made from 100 tons of compacted gravel. An earth wall in Linda Low's Scottsdale, Arizona home used 300 tons of decomposed granite. Builder David Easton says modern variations of the centuries-old building technique can employ steel reinforcement, insulation, and precise mixtures of silt, clay, sand, and gravel.
