The article explores the outbreak of cholera which has been documented in the area environing the lower Artibonite region of Haiti. Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by ingestion of contaminated water or food by human feces of persons infected with the organism Vibrio cholera. Cholera epidemics are caused by a lack of access to safe and clean water and regarded as a disease of poverty.
