The article reports on how mining methods are selected to extract coal seams in West Virginia. It is reported that coal seams that are less than three feet thick cannot be recovered using underground mining methods regardless of the seam's location in the geologic column. It mentions that a minimal configuration for underground mine development requires at least 600 feet of seam width from one side of the ridge to the other.
