A study presented at the European Congress on Obesity found that a nutritionally balanced, very low-calorie diet is safe and effective for adolescents with moderate to severe obesity. The study included 141 adolescents who followed a diet consisting of 800 calories per day for four weeks. The participants experienced significant weight loss and reported common, but mild side effects such as hunger, fatigue, and headache. The study suggests that very low-energy diets should be considered as a treatment option for severe obesity in adolescents before pharmacological or surgical interventions. However, it is important for adolescents to receive supervision and monitoring from a trained dietitian while following this type of diet. [Extracted from the article]
