In 1943, two sailors stationed in the South Pacific, A. P. McKinley and John D. Lyons, wrote to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game to settle a bet about the length of Idaho cougars. Governor C. F. Bottolfsen joined the argument, claiming that cougars in Idaho could grow up to 20 feet long. However, the Fish and Game information director clarified that the largest cougar known to have been killed in Idaho measured about 10 feet. This humorous exchange ended the debate.
