Television broadcasters are exploring means to broadcast data over ordinary analog TV signals. WavePhone's TVT1 is a device that allows up to 1.5M-bps of digital data, which is enough throughput to transmit a regular TV signal with compressed video. The system works with decoders stationed at receiver sets to display the additional images, which may be text-, video- or audio-based. One possible application of this technology would allow advertisers to target specific homes instead of broadcasting to a wide area. In the medical arena, communications teams have successfully completed a test of using wireless information technology to route images of 'wounded' soldiers to doctors for remote diagnosis. Office communications may be revolutionized with the advent of Bellcore's 'Electronic Receptionist,' a system that automatically routes phone calls to mobile personnel. The system has an unusual feature: it sends the name of the caller and the message topic so that the called party may decide whether or not to take the call.

Bell Atlantic Corp will acquire Simborg Systems Corp through a complete securities transfer and rename it Bell Atlantic Healthcare Systems. Its primary product remains STAT LAN, a hospital information management system. STAT LAN acts as a backbone for hospital departments to run their own local area network systems and microcomputers and to communicate with each other. Bell Atlantic's resources will enable the transformed Simborg to expand its activities in the health care industry. The company will continue to be active in the development of open architecture systems for hospitals. Bell Atlantic Healthcare Systems will market STAT LAN and take over Simborg's role in existing joint marketing agreements.
