Abstract

A study by the ministry for equal opportunities in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany, has shown an alarming tendency for young women in the former East Germany to accept rightwing extremist views. Obedience to a male partner was considered an important virtue by 25% of the women interviewed, while career success was considered a male domain by 47% of the 14-to-16-year-olds surveyed. Anita Heiliger, a researcher into women's attitudes based in Munich, Germany, considers young German women's acceptance of a traditional role as wife and homemaker a frightening shift backwards.
