Vitiligo is not just a cosmetic issue, but a condition that can lead to depression, stigmatization, and low self-esteem, according to Dr. Jessica Shiu, an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California, Irvine. Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition that results in the destruction of melanocytes, leading to milky white patches of skin. Treatment options include topical steroids, topical calcineurin inhibitors, and a JAK inhibitor called ruxolitinib cream. Phototherapy can also be combined with topical treatment to enhance repigmentation. Surgical options, such as tissue grafts and cellular grafts, are available for more extensive cases.
