The UK government and schools deny claims that the standard of A-level examinations has declined over recent years. However, academics and business leaders take the opposite view. The standard of A-level mathematics examinations, for example, has definitely declined, and this in turn has a negative impact on advanced study in the sciences and engineering. It is now time to take action to reverse this trend, possibly identifying a group of pupils at the age of 14 to pursue a higher level maths course.
