IN the early 1950s, Joe 'Spud' Murphy used to stop into Savage's grocers in Swords on his way home from work to pick up some essentials for his young family in Donabate. After complaining to Mrs Savage that the bland packet of crisps imported from England that he'd bought for his homeward journey were too often stale, chewy and tasteless, she retorted: 'Well why in blazes don't you make them yourself, then?' Little did Mrs Savage know then the impact that her words would have on Joe, who went on to produce a unique brand of crisps, and in the process, change Irish food forever...
