Reports on the advancement of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) chemists' efforts to produce electronic circuitry on a molecular scale. The article reports that chemists at the University of California, Los Angeles have designed the world's tiniest elevator, a molecular platform on three legs that can be raised or lowered on demand. The elevator is more complex and organized than other molecular machines. The elevator might some day serve as a valve, opening and closing a tiny cavity to allow a few drug molecules to reach a cell. The device is created by researcher J. Fraser Stoddart , a professor of organic chemistry. The key to the platform's ability to move up and down is in the legs, molecules called rotaxanes that have two sites along their length where the ring-like platform molecules can bind.
