New data suggests that among adults over 65 with type 2 diabetes, a body mass index (BMI) in the moderate overweight category (26-28) may offer better protection from cardiovascular death than a BMI in the "normal" range. However, for middle-aged adults with type 2 diabetes, the "normal" range of 23-25 is optimal. This reflects the "obesity paradox," where older people with overweight may have better outcomes due to factors like bone loss and frailty. The study emphasizes the importance of personalized BMI targets based on age and specific health conditions. However, more research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying these observations and to validate the findings in different populations. [Extracted from the article]
