Charts were commissioned by the Ford Motor Company, and compiled by the United States Department of Commerce, Army Air Corps, and Hydrographic Office in Washington, D.C., 1923-1930. In total, the atlas includes 74 aeronautical charts on 39 double sheets. Charts feature military, municipal, commercial, emergency, and seaplane landing fields, as well as beacons. Charts also shows political boundaries, roads, railways, cities, towns, topography, bodies of water, drainage, shorelines and coastlines. Charts are color lithographs pasted onto folio sheets. This is a unique, comprehensive collection of the earliest official air navigation charts produced in the United States. This custom composite atlas was compiled for the Ford Motor Company amidst the production of their iconic Trimotor aircraft, which was produced from 1926 to 1933. This atlas incorporates the three earliest series of official American air navigation charts, spanning from 1923 to 1930, presenting an unparalleled picture of the birth of nationwide civil aviation in the United States. The atlas includes charts from the Army Air Corps, the Department of Commerce, and the U.S. Hydrographic Office. Each chart showcases the evolving standards and methodologies of air navigation, reflecting the advancements in aviation technology and the political considerations that shaped American aviation policy in the 1920s. The birth of American commercial aviation traces its genesis to the early 20th century, following significant advancements in aviation technology and the success of military flight operations during World War I. In 1914, the world's first scheduled passenger airline service, operated by the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line, took flight in Florida, using a Benoist XIV airboat. This pioneering venture catalyzed the establishment of more organized and expansive air services. The Air Mail Act of 1925, commonly known as the Kelly Act, further accelerated the growth of the commercial aviation sector in the United States by authorizing the United States Post Office to contract with private airlines to transport mail. Subsequent legislation, including the Air Commerce Act of 1926, provided federal oversight and regulations for this nascent industry. By the 1930s, with infrastructural developments like airports and improvements in aircraft technology, commercial airlines had become integral components of the American transportation landscape, revolutionizing long-distance travel and setting the stage for the global aviation industry of the 20th century. On February 22, 1921, a pioneering experiment was conducted to determine the feasibility of cross-country flights without halting at nightfall. Two planes, each taking off from opposite coasts, attempted to traverse the route between New York and San Francisco. To aid night navigation, bonfires were strategically placed along the path. Of the participants, one mail plane, piloted by the aviator Jack Knight and equipped solely with a railroad map and a compass, successfully completed the journey. The first daytime, coast-to-coast airmail flight had only been completed the year before. Around the same time, in 1921, the United States Army Air Corps began an extensive evaluation of aeronautical charts, aiming to establish a standardized map for aerial navigation. As a result of this study, in 1923, the Air Corps began to issue a series of air navigation maps covering the country's main air routes. Before 1926, these maps were produced in collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Army Engineer Reproduction Plant. However, with the passage of the Air Commerce Act in 1926, the responsibility for creating these maps transitioned to the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey under the authority of the Department of Commerce. From this point forward, the objective was to integrate the burgeoning commercial airways system with the existing military network. The U.S. Navy and Hydrographic Office also determined to create a set of air navigation maps focused on the coasts of the United States. Sets of these maps from the 1920s are exceedingly rare, largely because pilots of that era would only carry individual maps pertinent to their specific routes. Given that a pilot would typically be responsible for only a handful of routes at any given time, there was rarely a need to possess a comprehensive collection. Furthermore, the number of long-haul pilots in the United States during this period was quite limited, which further decreased the circulation of these maps. Compounding their rarity, as aviation technology and knowledge advanced, these maps were swiftly updated and replaced, leading to the disposal of earlier versions. In some cases, it is clear that newer versions of individual charts have been pasted over earlier editions. This atlas contains a comprehensive collection of charts from the three previously mentioned series, extending up to approximately March 1930. This means that many of the maps in the Department of Commerce series had not yet been completed and printed, and that only two charts from the Hydrographic Office had been completed when the atlas was compiled. "An extremely rare 1830 plan of New Haven, Connecticut documenting its evolution from a maritime economy to a major New England manufacturing center. The plan represents the first significant improvement on Amos Doolittle’s 1812 Plan of New Haven, which had been only lightly improved and updated in editions of 1817 and 1824, while the significant growth of the city in the interim necessitated a new survey. Indeed the 1830 Census found that the city’s population had grown by no less than 42% in the past decade, from 7147 to 10,180. The plan’s most prominent feature is the original symmetrical grid of blocks surrounding a central Public Square, bounded by George, Grove, state and York Streets, a layout tracing back the city’s founding in 1638. Reflecting growth in the early 19th century, more recent development is shown in every direction, particularly to the east in the direction of the Mill River and to the south along the Harbor. Throughout, shading is used to indicate areas occupied by buildings. An inset at upper right depicts the village of Fair Haven, situated between the Mill and Quinnipiac Rivers, which had been annexed to New Haven in 1784, the year that city was incorporated. By 1830 New Haven’s economy had long since shifted to a manufacturing basis, most famously arms production at the factory founded by Eli Whitney. But much about the plan reveals New Haven’s maritime and mercantile roots, particularly the enormous Union Wharf extending into the harbor, the shipyard on the north side of Union Basin, and the rope walk adjacent to Water Street just east of the harbor. Other points of particular interest include Yale College to the northwest of the Square, the new State House (finished in 1828), ten places of worship identified in a legend at left, and the lower reaches of the Farmington Canal including five locks. The New Haven-to-Farmington stretch of the Canal had been opened in 1828, just two years prior to this plan’s publication, and by 1835 it would be opened all the way to Northampton, Massachusetts. It was never financially successful, though, and within a few years the Canal Company had sold its right of way to the New Haven and Northampton Railroad. The plan is extremely rare: We find but two holdings in institutional collections and no other record of its having appeared on the antiquarian market. An updated edition appeared in 1849, depicting a changed city, greatly expanded and shaped by the arrival of the railroad. David W. Buckingham The plan was surveyed and drawn by Buckingham (1797-1886), who in truth is something of a cipher. Little has been established about his early career, beyond the fact that he described himself as New Haven County Surveyor on this map and retains the title on the 1849 re-issue, though the earliest notices of the map’s publication make no mention of him at all. The closest thing we have found to a biographical sketch is laughably thin and sheds zero light on his activities as a surveyor. “David W. Buckingham, son of Ebenezer and Olive ( Woodnff) Buckingham, born Sept. 27, 1797; was twice married : (1.) To Maria Hannah Potter, Oct. 24, 1824. She was born Oct. 3, 1805, and died May 10, 1842. (2.) To Charlotte Hays Pardee, August 23, 1843. Mr. Buckingham resides in Chapel Street. New Haven, has been a grocery merchant, and has now retired from active business. He has in his possession a silver-mounted cane, marked S. B., which was given him by his father.” (Rev. F. W. Chapman, A.M., The Buckingham Family. Hartford: Case, Lockwood & Brainard, 1872, p. 440) A few later references mention him as holding minor civic positions, for example as one of no fewer than 24 Inspectors and Measurers of Wood and Charcoal (1866-67). Another work describe him only as “a retired merchant.” We find no mention of him in the contemporary press until 1884, and then only in connection with a 10-room home on Chapel Street he is seeking to rent out. Oddly, the Morning Journal-Courier for March 2, 1885 describes him as “one our best known old citizens, residing at 1,194 Chapel Street”. The Jocelyn Brothers and Charles Darling Nathaniel Jocelyn (1796-1881) and his younger brother Simeon Smith Jocelyn (1799-1879) were the leading engravers in New Haven from about 1820 to about 1850; they are best known as map engravers but were also among the most important American banknote engravers of their day. Both men were also skilled painters, and active in the Abolitionist movement. Simeon joined the clergy in 1829, and juggled his two vocations to about 1850, when he gave up engraving. In mid-1830, the brothers formed a (short-lived) partnership with another New Haven man, Charles Chauncey Darling (1799-1887), announced in the [New Haven] Columbian Register “N & S.S. JOCELYN and CHARLES C. DARLING have formed a Co-partnership under the firm of Jocelyn, Darling & Co. for the purpose of carrying on the publication of MAPS, PRINTS, ATLASSES, and other works …” (August 7, 1830, page 3). Although this is the earliest announcement of the partnership traced, the partnership was already operating, and was clearly formed to publish this plan of New Haven. Publication History The earliest newspaper announcement traced, placed by the partners in June 1830, comes late in the preparation of the map. Clearly, the partners had previously circulated proposals to publish the map by subscription, and Buckingham had since completed the base survey of New Haven. The June 1830 advertisement sought help in perfecting the survey, “CITY MAP. PERSONS who are acquainted with any contemplated roads, wharves, or improvements of a similar character, in this city, will oblige the subscribers by making it known to them immediately, for the purpose of having it added to the Map of the city, now engraving. — Owing to the necessity of a new survey of the city, and the time required to collect information to make a correct and valuable map, it will not be completed quite as soon as was expected. It is believed, however, that every subscriber will be well satisfied with the delay of a few weeks, that it may be the more perfect.” (Connecticut Journal, June 1, 1830, page 3). Publication, with the first reference to Buckingham, was announced in the Columbian Register on October 23: “CITY MAP. Just published and for sale by JOCELYN, DARLING & CO. At No.3 Bradley’s Buildings, The Map of the City of New-Haven. THE Map is from actual survey by D. W. Buckingham, County Surveyor, and embraces new streets and other improvements. “A large number of the streets have recently been named by the City Authorities, and are all inserted in the Map.” (p. 1) In all, a rare and important plan of New Haven, published at a time of transformative growth." Of these one (copy 2) is not described in the online catalog, while copy 1 originally sold as a wall-map, and copy 3 is printed on bank note paper and folded into the original paper covers.

Bound in dark teal-colored board, which has been reinforced with duct tape. Front cover includes title, advertisement and "Index to United States, Canada and Mexico maps". With green floral end papers. Collation: 2° : [1-4], 5-510, 515-608, [1-42] pages. Atlas comprised of 231 maps, with geographic coverage of the United States as a whole and each of its fifty states, as well as Canada, Central America, South America, the West Indies, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, the East Indies, Australia and New Zealand. Also, with several city maps, including San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas and Denver. Maps show political boundaries, counties, towns, Indian reservations, mines, railroads, roads, steamship lines, topography, bodies of water, drainage, coastlines, islands and water routes with distances. Some maps provide figures for square mileage and population. Volume includes title page, table of contents, and index pages associated with state maps, as well as 42 (unnumbered) pages with “Special list of attorneys in every banking town in the United States” and “Bank directory containing one or more principal banks and bankers in each city and town in the United States, who make a specialty of collections and general banking business”. According to the title, “Maps of the United States are the largest scale and clearest print of any maps published. Foreign maps are compiled largely from charts of the Royal Geographical Society and are geographically correct.” For the 1901 edition of the atlas, see Pub List No. 2809.000.

Relief shown by hachures., This 1864 edition is the latest date of publication of this atlas that we have seen (we have seen a copy of a title page of the same atlas dated 1862, published by Charles Desilver). Changes from the 1859 edition include a double page map of Pennsylvania, a new double page map of Kansas by W.H. Holmes, a double page map of Mexico, a double page map of Northern Italy, and various updates to individual maps. The maps still bear the copyright and imprint of Charles Desilver, but his address on most of the maps is changed from 251 Market Street to 714 Chesnut Street. and a few have the 1229 Chesnut Street address. Most copyright dates have been updated to 1859 or 1860 or 1862, from the 1856 copyright date in the 1859 edition. This edition marks the end of the New Universal Atlas run, which started twenty eight years earlier with the Tanner first edition of 1836. This copy is from the collection of Bruce Rosenberg and has been lent to us for digitization., This 1864 edition of Mitchell's New Universal Atlas is not found in Phillips or other references.

Statistical table with county and town population and population figures from 1701-1830., This atlas was published by Tanner to reach a broader market (i.e. less expensive) than his earlier large format American Atlas, with smaller pages and expanded coverage of non American areas. It was first issued in parts, beginning in 1834. The non American maps may be partly derived from the Dower/Teesdale General Atlas of 1831 - see P3549 & P772. North America map has states in different colors and has the following differences from the 1843 Atlas copy: San Felipe de Austin (as opposed to San Felipe in the 1843), and Sioux and Wisconsin Dists (not in the 1843 edition). Wheat mistakenly uses a post 1836 issue as an illustration in Trans Miss and calls it 1836. The Mexico map has differences from 1843 issue: Houston appears in 1843 and not in 1836, and San Felipe de Austin in 1836 is San Felipe in 1843. The Michigan map changes substantially between the 1836, the 1842, and the 1843 editions, especially the shoreline. See notes to the (1838) edition which also has a title page dated 1836. Shows streets, parks, waterways, and major buildings, with historical notes on red and yellow banners. Along the left and right borders are illustrations of important historical events or milestones in New Haven history, and a map of the center of the city in 1748. Many of the illustrations are related to the Yale University campus. There is an inset map of the oldest portion of the campus and the New Haven Green below the University seal and a numbered key to Yale buildings to the right of the title. On the right side is "Pres. Stiles Map of British Attack" and a numbered key to other "Points of Interest" highlighted in the map. The illustrations are done in a simple black outline with flat areas of color, and there are some playful touches such as sea monsters in the rivers, a compass rose surmounted by a winged hourglass, and the map title flanked by the New Haven landmarks East Rock and West Rock., Mounted on canvas-backed paper. Carina Eaglesfield Mortimer (also known as Carina Eaglesfield Milligan) was an architect from Connecticut at a time when there were few females in the profession. She joined the American Institute of Architects in 1930.

Insets of Hartford and New Haven., This is a unique copy of the Mitchell/Tanner Universal Atlas. Frederick Bourquin and his employer, Peter Duval, received a Third Premium Award from the Franklin Institute in November, 1848, for their achievement in transferring the Universal Atlas from copper plates to lithographic stones. The catalog of the exhibition lists it as "No. 52. Universal Atlas in folio, a most beautiful specimen of the art of transferring and lithographic printing, from the press of P.S. Duval, Philadelphia, transferred by Bourquin." This copy of the atlas was their submission to the Franklin Institute to be considered for the award. It is made up of sheets from the atlas, all uncolored, all oversized, and all taken from various editions of the atlas from 1846 to 1848 (one map is dated 1849, but we believe it was issued in late 1848). It appears that these sheets were offprints that remained in the lithographer's shop and that the atlas was made up from them. Atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with leather label on the front reading "Atlas Transferred From Copper To And Printed From Stone By Frederick Bourquin." The atlas stayed with the Franklin Institute, each page having the Institute's stamp on it, and was eventually sold by the Institute in the mid twentieth century. There are several erasures of dates that are earlier than 1848 (perhaps an attempt to make the book seem up to date) and several erasures of Tanner's name (on the title page) to conform to the fact that in 1848 this was known as Mitchell's atlas. The map borders vary between the "Mitchell" and the "Tanner" borders. And the paper thickness and quality varies as well. These sheets may have been some of the first "pulls" of each map in the various 1846-48 editions. This is a fascinating compilation and throws light on the transition in printing from copper plate to lithographic stone., Ristow p. 311 (award actually received in 1848), Ristow p. 311 (award actually received in 1848).

Relief shown by hachures., The scarce last edition listed in Phillips of Mitchell's New Universal Atlas (although we have seen a copy of a title page of the same atlas dated 1862, published by Charles Desilver). The maps still bear the copyright and imprint of Charles Desilver, but his address on most of the maps is changed from 251 Market Street to 714 Chestnut Street. Several of the maps have changes from the 1858 edition: New Jersey has new railroads, Washington D.C. has the column of References redone, North Carolina and South Carolina have been completely redrawn by J.L. Hazard, Mississippi had new railroads, Minnesota is a throwback to the 1857 edition with "Minnesota Territory" as the title, and there are subtle changes in many other maps indicating that even at this late date there was an attempt to keep the atlas current. This edition marks the end of the New Universal Atlas run, which started twenty three years earlier with the Tanner first edition of 1836. Bound in half leather red cloth covered boards with "Mitchell's Universal Atlas" and an elaborate border stamped in gold on the front and "Universal Atlas. Mitchell." on spine. See the late 1855 edition - further evidence that Mitchell updated the atlas at least twice a year. This copy belonged to Judah Chase (with his name gold stamped on the cover) who was a noted Blue Hill, Maine, Sea Captain and owner of the Brig Thomas M. Lyon. This ship sailed from Havre, France, at the end of March, 1836, and sank in a heavy gale off the Island of Jersey - but the crew was saved. The fine condition of this atlas suggests that it remained in Captain Chase's library and never went to sea. Maps are in full color.
