William Playfair’s three editions of The Commercial and Political Atlas introduced an astonishing number of novel charting constructions that are still in common use today, including:  The time series line graph. The divided surface area chart. The bar chart. Titles and textual descriptions. Chart framing. Color coding. Hachure and stippled dots. Labeling of axes. Gridlines. Suppression of nonsignificant digits. Time period indicators. Event markers. Theoretical, hypothetical, and projected values. Solid and broken lines. Playfair’s 1786 Atlas was the first publicly available volume to contain charts, and it exhibits 43 variants of the time series line graph together with a solitary bar chart. Playfair issued a second edition, which was little changed, in 1787. There are much more substantial differences in the third edition. Instead of 40 plates containing 44 charts, there are 26 plates containing 31 charts. The most significant omission is the bar chart showing the exports and imports of Scotland. Two new charts were added. The first, in Plate 19, is a rather elaborate large area chart on a flyout showing the annual revenues of England and France as well as the interest on debt. The other new plate is not numbered, although it is given a figure of 26 in the index and referred to as Chart XXVI in the text. Henricus Hondius published a French edition of Mercator's Atlas in 1633. This included over 100 new or updated maps compared to the French edition of 1628 (and our Latin edition of 1623). "As a service for owners of the last French edition of 1628 (1:114) he published the new maps also separately as L 'Appendice (1:312). For the old maps in the new edition he used the same signatures and page numbers as in the 1628 edition. The new maps have signatures and page numbers which are repeated signatures and numbers of the 1628 edition, to make it easier to insert the new maps in the old edition. For instance, the map of Lothian has to be placed between the second and third map of Scotland, with signatures 2E and 2F and page numbers 109-112 and 113-116 respectively. The new map is given the signature 2E2 and the repeated page numbers 109-112. As a consequence, the new complete edition has odd signatures. The Paris BGen copy is obviously completed this way, having the half.title and preface of the Appendix added in volume 2 and still Mercator's title page of the 1628 edition. ." (Van der Krogt 1:312). Decorative title cartouche. Relief shown pictorially. Towns, ports, and reefs shown., Bellin was an important maker of charts for the French Depot de la Marine. He was born in Paris in 1703 and educated as an engineer. He produced many important charts and published them individually and in compilations. The Neptune Francais was published in 1753 and the Hydrographie Francaise in 1756. His largest and most comprehensive work is the Petit Atlas Maritime with 581 charts (our copy has 582, including the rare "Carte Reduite des Decouvertes des Russe Entre L'Asie et L'Amerique.") that cover the coasts and important port cities of the known world. The Petit Atlas Maritime is probably the best compilation of plans of maritime towns and harbors of its time. Bellin died in Versailles in 1772. According to Tooley, Bellin issued an earlier version of this atlas in 1763 titled Petit Atlas Francois. The Duc de Choiseul provided financial support for the publication of the atlas. J. Arrivet is listed as engraver on the chart index pages and may also have engraved the charts themselves., P638 and P3508; National Maritime Museum 211; Tooley Mapping America, p208-209.

Far right extent of map includes five inset maps: New York and Perth Amboy Harbours, The Town and Harbour of Charles Town in South Carolina, The Bermuda or Summer Islands, Harbour of St. Augustine, and The Harbour of Providence. Soundings often included., Babinski State 8. Full color on the twenty sheet map. This edition was sold by Stephen Austin Bookseller and Thomas Willdey in London. Compare this later edition (1840) with our first edition 1733 map, 2874.000. Atlas provided for scanning by The Old Print Shop and Barry L. Ruderman. Popple's 20 sheet Map of the British Empire in America is without question one of the two most important large format maps of North America published in the 18th Century. Along with John Mitchell's Map of the British & French Dominions in North America . . . (1755), the map was a profound statement of England's designs for dominance of the North American continent, at a time when colonial conntrol of North America was by no means certain. Popple's map is the first large scale printed map to show the thirteen colonies. The maps is nearly 8 feet square, when joined. The map shows the extent of the British, French, and Spanish colonial possessions. The information on the map was based on Popple's work at the Board of Trade and Plantations in London. Popple's map was widely copied by other cartographers and remained the standard map of North America for several decades. The map was issued both as a wall map and as an Atlas, with the present example including advertising for the various formats in the lower margin of sheet 17, including pricing of the various formats., Cumming 216; Streeter 676; Lowery 337-8; Cumming & Wallis Introductory Notes to Margary's Popple reprint. Two hand col. engraved maps. Providence I. map shows depths by soundings. Scales: Bermodos (ca. 1:140,000); Providence (ca. 1:110,000)., Contains 62 hand col. double-page engraved maps (10 folding). Contemporary ink inscription on front blank endpaper. Newer full polished calf with original gilt-lettered red leather label. A few minor repairs. The Atlas Minor was first published in 1729 and reprinted in 1732. This ed. has new engraved title-page with contents and revised maps. The maps in the third ed. are similar to those of the 2nd, except that a number of the American maps contain added place names. Like most of Moll's works, the majority of the maps are undated, although the maps of Great Tartary (no. 32) and "The West Part of Barbary" (no. 41) are dated 1732. The deciding factor which makes this copy the 3rd. ed. is map no. 13 (Germany) which carries the added legend, "Lorrain was ceded to France A.D. 1736 ..." Includes 29 maps of Europe, 10 of Asia, 5 of Africa and 18 of the Americas, including the double-hemisphere world map (no. 1) and the map of America (no. 45) that show California as an island. The Rumsey Collection copy includes 17 extra inserted, uncolored, undated maps (13 folding, 2 manuscript), 7 of which deal with the West Coast of Africa, and 2 of which are manuscript maps of the harbors at Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, the mouth of the Amazon River and Straits of Magellan, all with captions and place names in French; 3 others are of Upper and Lower Canada. The 17 maps appear to have been taken from several later 18th century sources, and were probably extracted from Kitchen's Pocket Atlas, Child's Universal Traveller, the English ed. of Du Halde's Description of China, and other works. A folded world map shows George Anson's track on his voyage of circumnavigation in 1740-1744, and is probably from one of the numerous eds. of his Voyage. Collation: 4° : [1], A⁴, a², B-Cc⁴, Cc², Aaa-Zzz⁴, [1] pages. Pagination: [1], 1-204, 241-418, [1]. Pages 205-240 appear to have been omitted; signatures discontinue here. No references to these pages appear elsewhere within the volume. Numerous pagination misprints throughout, and continuously from page 289 through the remainder of the volume. Atlas contains 65 maps, including two maps on page 322 - West Barbarie and East Barbarie - which the table of contents lists simply as Of Barbary. Maps show international and administrative political boundaries, cities, routes, topography, drainage, coastlines, islands and other features of regions around the world, such as the Great Wall of China (page 295) and the indigenous peoples of the Bermuda Islands (page 401). Maps include indexes, compass roses and bar scales, as well as latitudinal and longitudinal lines. Atlas also provides a dedication, note to the reader, advertisement for other maps and an introduction to geography, as well as lengthy accompanying text for each map. Robert Morden (1650-1793) was a British map and globe maker. Little is known about his early life, although he was most likely apprenticed to Joseph Moxon. By 1671, Morden was working from the Atlas on Cornhill, the same address out of which Moxon had previously worked. Most famous for his English county maps, his geography texts, and his wall maps, Modern entered into many partnerships during his career, usually to finance larger publishing projects. Provenance: Verso of back cover contains manuscript annotations possibly indicating that the atlas was in the possession of a French bookseller in 1968, who deemed the work "very rare.", Reference: Burden 519-524

This book contains two of John Speed's most important atlases, "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine," and "A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World." Published by Bassett & Chiswell in 1676, it is a late edition of both works which were originally published in 1612 for the Theatre and 1627 for the Prospect. This edition of the Prospect expands the maps from the original 21 maps in the 1627 edition to 28 maps, including new maps of British possessions in North America. These two Speed atlases are considered the most important English language atlases of the 17th century. They both went through many editions - The Theatre published by John Sudbury and George Humble, 1612 and 1616; George Humble 1623, 1627, 1631/1632; William Humble 1646, 1650,1654; Roger Rea 1662, 1665; Bassett & Chiswell 1676; Christopher Browne ca. 1690, 1695; John & Henry Overton 1710, 1743; Dicey & Co ca. 1770. Engraved hand-colored in outline, double-page map in 12 sheets, with decorative title cartouche and inset map of Bermuda Island. The first edition of Zatta's twelve sheet version of Mitchell's Map of North America, plus three other maps: Il Canada, La Baja D' Hudson, and Le Isole di Terra Nuova e Capo Breton. Zatta's version of Mitchell is not an exact copy: many geographical changes are introduced, and Bermuda is depicted as well as Jamaica, neither of which are shown by Mitchell. Maps showing administrative divisions, settlements, cities, towns, forts, Indian settlements, bridges, canals, mountains and rivers. Relief shown pictorially and by hacures. Includes notations., Zatta's atlas in 4 volumes, dated MDCCLXXIX - MDCCLXXXIV (1779-1784). The most comprehensive world atlas issued in Italy in the 18th. century, based on observations and discoveries made by the most famous and most recent geographers. Volumes 2-4 have full engraved title pages, including borders with geographical instruments and maps, seaside scenes at bottom with a large globe and several putti engaged in mapmaking and observation and a scene in the center. Vol. I, has decorated engraved title page/frontispiece, dedication text " a Sua Eccellenza il Signor Carlo Spinola ..." and index. Bound in half leather marbled covered boards with "Atlante novissi. Venez, 1788 P.A. Zat." stamped in gold on spine. 217 detailed maps, engraved hand colored, double-page, with title cartouches showing vignettes of topographical and historic scenes, dated 1774-1788. Includes notes and compass rose oriented with north to top right., First reworked edition of Mercator's Atlas Minor issued by the Janssonius heirs (Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge) in 1673, without text or printed index. With engraved architectural and emblematic title page, and 183 copperplate engraved maps. Printed from the plates of the Cloppenburg editions of the Atlas Minor (1630, 1632, 1636), with a new map of the United Provinces and additional decorative elements to some maps, along with some updates to the maps. This edition of Mercator's 'Atlas'... was a changed format edition. Its newly engraved maps fell in between the folio maps in the Mercator-Hondius Atlas and the Atlas Minor. The Cloppenburg edition seems to have been suppressed after 1636. It was continued with this copy after 1673 by the Janssonius heirs. Because the maps are all take from the Cloppenburg plates of the 1636 edition, these maps are dated 1636, while the atlas is dated (Pub Date) as 1673. The maps include decorative cartouches, latitudinal and longitudinal lines, coats of arms, compass rose, and show political boundaries, cities, towns, topography, vegetation, waterways and landmarks. Copper-engraving uncolored map of Bermuda. Relief shown pictorially., Second edition in English, translated from the Mercator Hondius 1607 Atlas Minor (see our copy 11201.000) by Wye Saltonstall. With engraved decorative title page dated 1637 that is filled with allegorical female figures, geographers measuring the globe within an architectural surrounding, and additional title page from the first edition, dated 1635, with the imprint: Printed by T. Cotes for Michael Sparke and Samuel Cartwright. The atlas is in 1032 pages, includes frontispiece "Englished by W.S.," dedications signed by Wye Saltonstall. Also includes preface, notes, 26 pages of tables, index, illustrations, diagrams, portrait, 930 pages of text and 184 maps. In full leather binding with raised spine. Maps with decorative cartouches, showing the boundaries, territories, topographical features, cities and towns, landmarks, rivers, forests, some maps with illustrations of sea monsters and sailing ships. Relief shown pictorially. Numerous errors in pagination. P. 905 bears a map of New Spain, a duplicate of that on p. 907, description of New Spaine read New Virginia, but there is no Map of Virginia. There is map of Virginia and Florida, which covers the area south of Chesapeake Bay, used first in the "Atlas Minor" of 1607. The map of Egypt: 'At Page 818. the single Map of Aegypt is to be pasted on the Page. Second printing in English, with a duplicate map of New Spain in place of the later issued map of Virginia by Ralph Hall: "there is no Map for Virginia in regard there is a more exact Map drawing in that Country, whose Platforme is not yet come over, but when it comes, every buyer of the Booke shall have it given him gratis" (see errata on verso of final leaf). "Wye Saltonstall intended in his first edition of the "Historia Mundi" a map of Virginia. In acquiring the Mercator-Hondius copperplates used first in the "Atlas Minor" of 1607, he only possessed one of Virginia and Florida, which covers the area south of Chesapeake Bay. Since that time the Jamestown colony had become important, and a map would be needed to illustrate it… [Hall's] map was included in future editions of the "Historia Mundi" in 1637 and 1639" (Burden 244). Without the ninth state of the rare map of New England by John Smith found in some copies. Earlier editions have a second title page dated 1851, a view of the Great Pavilion opposite the ornamental title page, and an index sheet titled "Directions to Binder - arrangement of maps" (Huntington Library copy). Colton might not have published the General Atlas in this period because of the Family Atlas collaboration with Johnson (just saw an 1862 & 1863 listed in World - Brit Museum, but maybe small editions were run?). That collaboration ended in 1863 (we believe) when Colton's name was dropped from the direct title page credits. Ristow states (p325) that Colton retired in 1864, and the General Atlas thereafter was published by G.W. & C.B. Phillips does not list this 1865 (which has J.H. as publisher) but has 1866 (P6155) published by G.W. & C.B. Colton adds the "Johnson" western states maps in this edition (and may have done this also in 1864), while Johnson drops them in 1864 and replaces them with maps of unknown source. In full color. Map appears on an unfurled scroll laid atop a drawing of the local flora and fauna. Large elaborate drawing surrounds the title cartouche for 12 map sheets when viewed as a composite., In addition to a two volume Italian translation of Raynal's History of North America, this book contains the first edition of Zatta's twelve sheet version of Mitchell's Map of North America, plus three other maps: Il Canada, Le Isole di Terra Nuova e Capo Breton, and La Baja D' Hudson. All of these maps appeared also in Zatta's Atlante Novissimo published from 1779-1785. A second edition of the Zatta/Mitchell maps was published in 1791 (see P651). Zatta's version of Mitchell is not an exact or complete copy: the Zatta maps do not cover the far western portions of Mitchell's map, many geographical changes are introduced, and Bermuda is depicted as well as Jamaica., neither of which are shown by Mitchell. A separate map covers Newfoundland and Cape Breton, on the same scale. Maps are hand painted with outline color. Covers are quarter leather light brown marbled paper covered boards with "Raynal. The first state of the large map and the index map (see Cumming & Wallis for Margary reprint and Cumming 216) in that the pages are unnumbered, no credits below the neat line on sheet 17 or the title sheet, and Toms & Seale on Sheet 20. The binding is full red morocco with gold tooling at the edges and the coat of arms of King George II in gold on the front and back covers; the spine is stamped with "Popple's Atlas" in gilt. This copy was sold to the family I acquired it from by Francis Edwards in 1929/30 - a copy of Edward's 1929 catalogue entry is tipped into the front of the book. Tooley, Mapping America p 316, says "A copy (of the Popple Map) bound in red morocco for George II sold in 1930..." Lacks the contents sheets and the half sheet #4 (provided in expert facsimile). The index map is in full color while the map sheets are The first large scale map of America and the most accurate at the time. Covens and Mortier published a six sheet edition in 1740 (Lowery). Lowery, Howes and Phillips incorrectly list Seale as "Searle." Engraved nautical chart showing anchorages, rhumb lines, sailing courses, currents, shoals, forested areas, etc. Relief shown by hachures. Include navigtional notes., This is a superb atlas of the West Indies and a companion atlas to Jeffery's American Atlas also first issued in 1775. The latest date on the charts in this copy is 1788 (The Cape Verd Islands). There is a beautifully illustrated title page that precedes the main title page, which reads "The West Indian Atlas..." Jefferys died in 1771; Sayer and Bennet acquired his materials in preparation for this atlas, and published the atlas posthumously under his name (as they did with the American Atlas) in 1775. The heart of this atlas and the most detailed part is the sixteen sheet large chart and index sheet of the whole of the West Indies. The rest of the atlas consists of charts of the Atlantic Islands and the British Channel, as well as individual maps and charts of seventeen islands in the West Indies. Twenty seven pages of text gives the sources for the maps and charts, and a historical account of the West Indies. Three of the large chart maps also appeared in the American Atlas. Comparing the two Florida sheets in this atlas to the same sheets in the 1775 American Atlas, numerous changes to the coast lines and other features appear. That would indicate that Sayer updated the charts as the atlas was reissued - Phillips shows issues of 1775, 1781, 1787, 1794, 1796, 1807, and 1818. With the 1794 and later editions, 20 maps are added of various additional islands. Sayer and Bennet also published in 1775 a smaller version of this atlas called "The West India Islands: From Actual Survey and Observations..." that consisted of the same text, a general chart of the Islands, and the same sixteen or seventeen (depending on the edition) charts of the islands that appear in the larger version (P3942). Full color., The first edition, first state (see our first edition, second state for comparison) of Lucas' best general atlas and the finest general atlas produced in the U.S. at that time (In asserting this we omit the Tanner and Finley American Atlases of 1823 and 1826 respectively because they were not general atlases - cartographically they may have been superior to the Lucas, but not as broad in coverage). The quality of the engraving (most of the U.S. maps were engraved by B.T. Welch, others by Young & Delker, J.V.N. Throop, Cone & Freeman, and Kneass) is superb, the detail is very fine, and the coloring is delicate and elegant. While the same Lucas drawn base maps were used in this atlas and the 1822 American Atlas by Carey and Lea (and thereby created strained relations between him and Carey and Lea), the maps in this Lucas Atlas are far superior in quality - Welch reengraved many of the maps for Lucas that Young & Delker had engraved for Carey and Lea. It is interesting to note that the Carey and Lea maps are usually earlier states of the Lucas maps. The Atlantic Islands and the West Indies Island Maps are mostly copied from Thomson's General Atlas of 1817 (see our copy) as is the Mountains and Rivers plate (reduced). Many maps are derived from the earlier Lucas Atlas of 1815-17 which copied the Oddy Atlas maps for the non U.S. state maps. Some copies have solid color. Maps of Mexico, Canada, and N. America (updated by Lucas in the arctic), are copied from Arrowsmith's General Atlas of 1823 (first ed. was 1817). The classical maps derive from Melish's Atlas of Ancient Geography of 1815. The 70 maps were also published in two other forms: in "A Complete Atlas" of 1752, and as the Maps for the "Complete Collection of Voyages" by John Harris, in 1744-48 (M&B). The text is massive and interesting, and there are several important maps of America: America, West Indies, Mexico, Louisiana, Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania et al, and Newfoundland et al. The map of the World in Hemispheres is lacking in this copy. Both volumes are newly bound in full brown leather covered boards with "Geography. Vol. 1" and -Geography. The atlas was first issued in 1780 with maps engraved by Andre, then reissued in 1783-4 (P5995) without Andre or Bonne on the maps, finally reissued in 1820 with the maps reengraved by Dien (Tooley Dictionary)(our copy of atlas). WH has copies of the 1780 and 1783-4 atlases. It is strange that map #2, the World map, in our copy is an earlier map than the first and second editions of the atlas. Sabin shows many reissues of the 1780 edition of the atlas, so there may be more editions and states than these three. The earlier editions of the atlas were accompanied by twenty three tables in the back. Our copy of the text is 12 mo. and was given as a student prize. Maps are Atlas bound in quarter leather with "Raynal. Atlas." in gold on spine., P5992 (atlas); Sabin 68081(text) and 68082 (atlas).

The date of 1872 is estimated by the Australia map; all the maps are undated and probably date throughout the period 1864 to 1872: the North America map shows Colorado and Russian America while the United States map has no Colorado. The World maps show Alaska. This is the last highly decorative atlas published in England. Even the maps without views or figures are beautifully engraved and colored with a mixture of printed color and hand color. Swanston, Petermann, Bartholomew, Macnab and Johnson engraved the maps. The introduction by Shaw among other things lists important general atlases published over a long period. He lists only one United States atlas, Mitchell's Universal Atlas of 1853! The maps bear a superficial resemblance to Keith Johnston's Royal Atlas. Fullarton frequently gives the sources for his maps - for the United States maps he gives Calvin Smith and Tanner as sources. The atlas is bound in half leather dark green cloth covered boards with "The Royal Illustrated Atlas." stamped in gilt on the cover; the spine reads "Royal Illustrated Atlas" in gold., cf P838 (1862); M&B p182; Tooley Australia 659 (1872); NMM 521.

Delavault., These maps comprise volume 5 of Vandermaelen's Atlas Universel, here issued as separate, unbound sheets. This monumental work was the first atlas of the world with all maps on the same scale (and a large scale at that - about one inch to 26 miles) and the first lithographed world atlas. If all the maps were joined together they would form a globe of 7.75 meters in diameter (such a globe was made in Brussels). The maps were published originally in parts of ten maps each, beginning in 1825 and ending in 1827. Vandermaelen's maps are frequently misunderstood because each map is usually best comprehended in the context of its neighboring maps - the maps do not function well on their own, since they were all meant to be joined. Koeman states that "His atlases, although unique in concept and size did not possess that fine touch of cartographic style which make them attractive for a collector..." We strongly disagree - the graphic art of the maps must be appreciated in the context of lithography, a developing art at the time; as lithographs, they are very well done. For many of the areas depicted, these maps are the largest scale maps made at the time, and the most detailed (particularly in the American West). Bermuda Islands map at scale 1:500,000., This second edition of the Atlas of the World (1st edition in 1954) has fewer maps of the USSR on account of the interim publication of the "Atlas of the USSR", three fewer historical maps due to then impending publication of the "Historical Atlas of the World", and many new maps and revisions. The Atlas was considered accurate in terms of contemporary knowledge of the ocean floors. This edition also uses both the Russian and the Roman alphabets - making it comprehensible to a much broader range of readers. "The second edition of the World Atlas is issued at a time when all progressive people of the globe are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Great October socialist revolution." Mapped in attractive full color with tints for elevation and sea depth values. Relief shading is sometimes used to contribute to realism. Scales generally in regular increments (two or multiples of two); urban vicinity maps typically at 1:250,000 facilitating the comparison of the sizes of major cities around the world.

Rare final edition of the Fourth Book of the English Pilot, which was published in five separate books, and was the first major sea-atlas published in England. Furthermore, the Fourth Book was the first wholly English sea-atlas of American waters. The English Pilot, taken as a whole, had a long and complex publishing history that illustrates the development of the chart trade in England during its formative period. Blaeu has copied John Speed's 1622 Bermuda map, see our 12058.209, This is Willem Blaeu's first world atlas, without text on the versos of the maps. Koeman identifies 5 copies. Most of these copies have 60 maps - our copy has an additional 7 maps. The collation of all the copies identified varies considerably. Our copy does not include a map or maps of France which may indicate that it is a very early example. 37 of the maps have been printed from plates acquired from Jodocus Hondius II, substituting Willem Blaeu's name as maker. All of the plates are very strong impressions, indicating early states of all the maps. A second edition of the Appendix was published in 1631 in two states, one with 98 maps and the other with 99 maps arranged in different order (Koeman)., Koeman Bl 1.
