Image transfer, ink, rice paper and mixed media drawing., "How to Make a Golden State is a map that traces Asian farmworker history in California and links it to the broader geopolitical forces driving agricultural development in the U.S. The map is densely populated with a blend of media-media paper collage paintings of archival photographs, geological maps, and anecdotes describing Chinese, Japanese, Filipinx, Korean, South Asian, and Southeast Asian farmworkers’ crucial contributions to the development of agriculture in the Golden State. Consisting of multiple semi-translucent layers of imagery, this work aims to evoke a history painting set in an ecosystem alive with feeling, where history inhabits the space of myth, and vice versa. While the map finds its anchor in Asian farmworker history in California, it inhabits a dispersed and palimpsestic sense of time that threads the past through the present and aims to visualize the ways in which the history of Asian agricultural labor in California is tightly braided with environmental history, labor history, economic history, political history, and immigration history in not just the Golden State, but the U.S. as a whole." "Mixed media drawing and collage on cyanotype print. Land of Opportunity is a map that documents forty-three of the most well-documented toxic sites in the Bay Area, alongside local environmental justice protests and both federal and community-based remediation efforts. The tar-like blobs dripping down the paper are places notable for the amount of toxic material that has leaked into the soil and groundwater primarily as a result of high-tech industry, military activities, mercury mining during the gold rush era, and nuclear testing in the South Pacific during World War II. Despite its reputation for being one of the ‘greenest’ places in the United States, the Bay Area also has one of the highest concentrations of Superfund sites in the country, particularly in Silicon Valley, the techno-utopian capital of the United States. The map emphasizes community-based, grassroots organizing efforts, and shows both the kinds of poisons that have contaminated the land as well as the ways in which surrounding communities have protested the presence of these polluters and demanded their right to a clean, healthy environment. Land of Opportunity is a register of the ways in which the Bay Area has been shaped — both figuratively and literally — by dominant settler narratives of the landscape’s potential for wealth and resource extraction. But it is also more than the shadowland of settler, entrepreneurial greed, or the American imperial war machine: it’s also a place constituted and nourished by strong radical politics, care for community, and a trust in the power of local organizing. We live in a place of endless possibility — where the byproducts of greed and warmongering can be sublimated into other forms of power, and politics can be shaped in certain places by the will of the people." "Routes/Roots traces the ways in which major food plants — from peppers to watermelons to coffee — have traversed the world over the past several millennia, along with the human activities that have enabled or necessitated their movement. An incomplete register shaped by the interests and biases of its author, this map nevertheless attempts to record the manifold ways in which colonialism, slavery and capitalistic enterprise have shaped not only what foods we eat and consider ‘native’ to a place, but also how seeds and their fruits can make hostile new landscapes feel like home — or transform fertile soil into unrecognizable fields for industry. When we consider the brutal histories behind many of our favorite foods, what is the true cost of a bag of sugar or a sack of oranges? This work was originally made for inclusion in my solo exhibition new yamfish seed exchange (nyse). Routes/Roots is scaled according to the Gall-Peters map projection, which maps all areas such that they have the correct sizes relative to one another. Many maps today continue to use the Mercator projection, which was originally used for colonial navigation and incorrectly inflates the size of regions according to their distance from the equator, making regions such as Greenland disproportionately large and continents such as Africa disproportionately small."
