"Mixed media drawing and collage on cyanotype print. Land of Opportunity is a map that documents forty-three of the most well-documented toxic sites in the Bay Area, alongside local environmental justice protests and both federal and community-based remediation efforts. The tar-like blobs dripping down the paper are places notable for the amount of toxic material that has leaked into the soil and groundwater primarily as a result of high-tech industry, military activities, mercury mining during the gold rush era, and nuclear testing in the South Pacific during World War II. Despite its reputation for being one of the ‘greenest’ places in the United States, the Bay Area also has one of the highest concentrations of Superfund sites in the country, particularly in Silicon Valley, the techno-utopian capital of the United States. The map emphasizes community-based, grassroots organizing efforts, and shows both the kinds of poisons that have contaminated the land as well as the ways in which surrounding communities have protested the presence of these polluters and demanded their right to a clean, healthy environment. Land of Opportunity is a register of the ways in which the Bay Area has been shaped — both figuratively and literally — by dominant settler narratives of the landscape’s potential for wealth and resource extraction. But it is also more than the shadowland of settler, entrepreneurial greed, or the American imperial war machine: it’s also a place constituted and nourished by strong radical politics, care for community, and a trust in the power of local organizing. We live in a place of endless possibility — where the byproducts of greed and warmongering can be sublimated into other forms of power, and politics can be shaped in certain places by the will of the people." "Based on sensory-mapping concepts developed by UK artist Kate McLean - Diane Borsato, JP King and Amish Morrell led a group of artists and tea-sommeliers from the Toronto Tea Guild in a walk along Sterling Road, Toronto. Together we recorded smells in a commissary kitchen, a brewery, a chocolate factory, a publisher, a government employment office, former aluminum manufacturing sites, a railpath and more - to make a portrait of a gentrifying industrial neighbourhood at a transitional moment in its development. "Auerbach has created an oversized pop-up book, [2,3], featuring six die-cut paper sculptures that unfold into wonderful, elaborate forms. While much of Auerbach’s work has previously dealt with compositions staged in the flux state between 2D and 3D, [2,3] represents an expansion for the artist towards a more sculptural medium. Engineered by the artist, each “page” opens into a beautifully constructed object, intricately conceived so that the large-scale paper works—some up to 18” tall—can be collapsed totally flat. The six sculptures in [2,3] take their cue from a range of geometric forms—the pyramid, sphere, ziggurat, octagonal bipyramid (gem), arc, and möbius-strip. The use of a bright, contrasting palette is familiar from Auerbach’s previous work across a range of materials, including acrylics, etchings and C-type prints. This groundbreaking project stands as an astonishing art-object, part bookwork and part sculpture, and represents an advance in the field of pop-up technology. The six volumes will be housed in a specially designed slipcase, and each folio will measure 20” x 32” when open. [2,3] is in a signed and numbered edition of 1,000 plus 100 proofs. A lot has happened, but there are not enough changes in the landscape of domains in the last 12 months to create another domain-based Web Trend Map. The big changes happened one level higher, on the social layer, that is: On Twitter and Facebook. Since Twitter is becoming an alternative web protocol that—together with Facebook—gets closer and closer to replacing the domain/search paradigm, we decided to make an info graphic that shows how, and through whom, Twitter developed into what it is now, close to its 4th birthday. What Is It? We call it Big Bang. It shows the explosive development of Twitter since the beginning from its center (birth) with two people, to its edges (today) with 75 million people. Well aware that a big paper thin disc is probably going to be a bitch to print and a big pain to put on the wall—we are still going to try to print it circle round. Please don’t faint just yet. Here is the logic: The main circle represents the amount of people within twitter. Instead of North-South-East-West, we divided the circle in different content categories. We tried to arrange the content areas so that similar categories are neighboring, and contrary categories are opposite. The circles within the circle represent the followers of a selection of the most relevant twitterers. The circles represent on a 1:1 scale what piece of the pie each twitterer covers. They have a spread (follower score) and a core (list score). Each bubble will feature the first tweet of that user. This carte was found in the papers of Jo Mora's son and printed by the Jo Mora Trust in a limited edition of 40 in 2007.
