Today's wireless technologies are largely based on inflexible designs, which make them inefficient and prone to a variety of wireless attacks. To address this key issue, wireless receivers will need to (i) infer on-the-fly the physical layer parameters currently used by transmitters; and if needed, (ii) change their hardware and software structures to demodulate the incoming waveform. In this paper, we introduce PolymoRF, a deep learning-based polymorphic receiver able to reconfigure itself in real time based on the inferred waveform parameters. Our key technical innovations are (i) a novel embedded deep learning architecture, called RFNet, which enables the solution of key waveform inference problems, and (ii) a generalized hardware/software architecture that integrates RFNet with radio components and signal processing. We prototype PolymoRF on a custom software-defined radio platform and show through extensive over-the-air experiments that PolymoRF achieves throughput within 87% of a perfect-knowledge Oracle system, thus demonstrating for the first time that polymorphic receivers are feasible. Modern cell phones are required to receive and display alerts via the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) program, under the mandate of the Warning, Alert, and Response Act of 2006. These alerts include AMBER alerts, severe weather alerts, and (unblockable) Presidential Alerts, intended to inform the public of imminent threats. Recently, a test Presidential Alert was sent to all capable phones in the U.S., prompting concerns about how the underlying WEA protocol could be misused or attacked. In this paper, we investigate the details of this system and develop and demonstrate the first practical spoofing attack on Presidential Alerts, using commercially available hardware and modified open source software. Our attack can be performed using a commercially available software-defined radio, and our modifications to the open source software libraries. We find that with only four malicious portable base stations of a single Watt of transmit power each, almost all of a 50,000-seat stadium can be attacked with a 90% success rate. The real impact of such an attack would, of course, depend on the density of cellphones in range; fake alerts in crowded cities or stadiums could potentially result in cascades of panic. Fixing this problem will require a large collaborative effort between carriers, government stakeholders, and cellphone manufacturers. In this paper, we study a distributed state estimation problem for Markov jump systems (MJS) over sensor networks, in which each sensor node connects with each other through wireless networks with communication delays. Training deep neural networks on large datasets containing high-dimensional data requires a large amount of computation. A solution to this problem is data-parallel distributed training, where a model is replicated into several computational nodes that have access to different chunks of the data. This approach, however, entails high communication rates and latency because of the computed gradients that need to be shared among nodes at every iteration. The problem becomes more pronounced in the case that there is wireless communication between the nodes (i.e., due to the limited network bandwidth). To address this problem, various compression methods have been proposed, including sparsification, quantization, and entropy encoding of the gradients. Existing methods leverage the intra-node information redundancy, that is, they compress gradients at each node independently. In contrast, we advocate that the gradients across the nodes are correlated and propose methods to leverage this inter-node redundancy to improve compression efficiency. Depending on the node communication protocol (parameter server or ring-allreduce), we propose two instances for the gradient compression that we coin Learned Gradient Compression (LGC). Our methods exploit an autoencoder (i.e., trained during the first stages of the distributed training) to capture the common information that exists in the gradients of the distributed nodes. To constrain the nodes’ computational complexity, the autoencoder is realized with a lightweight neural network. We have tested our LGC methods on the image classification and semantic segmentation tasks using different convolutional neural networks (CNNs) [ResNet50, ResNet101, and pyramid scene parsing network (PSPNet)] and multiple datasets (ImageNet, Cifar10, and CamVid). The ResNet101 model trained for image classification on Cifar10 achieved significant compression rate reductions with the accuracy of 93.57%, which is lower than the baseline distributed training with uncompressed gradients only by 0.18%. We aim to maximize the sum received power among EHRs via jointly optimizing the hybrid analog-digital precoders at the BS, the reflection-coefficient matrix, and the AN covariance matrix, subject to the transmit power budget constraint, the minimal rate requirement of information decoding receivers (IDRs), the secure transmission constraints of EHRs, and the unit-modulus phase shifts constraints. Since this optimization problem is non-convex and the variables are tightly coupled, a penalty-based block coordination descent (BCD) algorithm is designed to decouple the original problem into multiple sub-problems and then iteratively solve them by capitalizing on the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. In particular, the baseband digital beamformers and the analog beamformer are obtained with closed-form expressions using the augmented Lagrangian and BCD methods.
