The article discusses the application and design of suction piles as anchors for high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) pipelines and subsea structures. The straightforward use of finite element (FE) method is cited as the most common technique for analysis and design of such piles under lateral loading. It states the need to design the pipeline anchor system in a way that meet the support stiffness assumed in the analyses of pipeline. Also noted are various ways to examine suction piles as pipeline anchors under applicable loads.
