A new microstructured surface has been developed by Virginia Tech engineer Jonathan Boreyko and his colleagues to improve heat-transfer efficiency in liquid-cooling systems for data centers and power plants. By creating an array of 80-micron-diameter cavities and 40-micron-wide grooves on the bottom of a boiling chamber, the surface allows for the formation of smaller, more closely packed bubbles that quickly coalesce with nearby bubbles, resulting in more efficient heat transfer. The technology has potential applications in heat exchangers, boilers, and electronics cooling, but further research is needed to determine its effectiveness. [Extracted from the article]
