The article presents a study which examines the music of Chinese American heritage, as portrayed in American music education from the late 19th century to the present. In the earliest period of the publication of the "Music Supervisors Journal," 1914-1934, no articles can be found on Chinese music or music education. Images of the Chinese, many of them unflattering, were portrayed in several advertisements by publishers of operettas and cantatas for junior high school within the "Music Supervisors Journal." Up to the mid-1960s, the Chinese songs surveyed within the basal series revealed minimal explanations of historical and cultural contexts.
