After examining the poetic context of Ar. Ra. 1331-1363 and focussing on the editorial assessment established by Chantry (1999, 150) for schol. vet. Ar. Ra. 1344b-d., this article aims to propose an alternative emendation for a corrupt passage in schol. 1344b, along with defending the order of the glosses as transmitted in the medieval manuscripts.

ABSTRACTIn December 1547, Edward VI’s parliament passed the Act for the Dissolution of Chantries, Colleges and ‘like institutions’, all targeted as they originated from the now denounced doctrine of Purgatory. The Court of Augmentations was commissioned to survey all relevant institutions throughout England and Wales. This article focuses on the surveys of the East and West Midlands, but the experiences highlighted were common throughout the kingdom. Recounting the stories found in the records enables some conclusions to be drawn on how religious change was introduced to wider society: how parishes and communities, especially the lives of the ordinary clergy ‘of honest conversation’, were affected. AbstractIn his last will and testament, dated January 1514, Sir Henry Vernon detailed his intent that a chapel should be founded at the collegiate church of St Bartholomew at Tong, as a final resting place for himself and his wife, and as a chantry for the souls of his family. Completed, it seems, by early 1519, the form of the chapel and its decoration indicates that Sir Henry was commemorated in the artistic language of the very finest contemporary chantry projects. Indeed, a number of the chapel's features are directly copied from the most illustrious of all late medieval chantries: Henry VII's chapel at Westminster Abbey. The chapel, physically and institutionally, also offers insight into the nature of late medieval piety. Unusually, the foundation makes no explicit charitable provision, long established as a central element of the contemporary doctrine of salvation. Yet the chantry-chapel was a physical and institutional appendage to a 'family' mausoleum, whose collegiate function had a strong charitable element. As such, the chapel suggests that, although chantries and tombs were themselves intensely personal, spiritual legacies were viewed in the same way as territorial interests: as inherited familial institutions, which could and should be augmented, rather than enterprises by, and limited to, individuals. In short, through its location, form and decorative scheme, the chapel demonstrates that, whilst numbering in their hundreds by the Reformation, such chapels were far from simply formulaic expressions of piety. Rather, they could serve as the vehicle for the creation of a very specific identity for the chapel's founder.

The author relates his experience of detecting pilgrim artefacts, along with his friends, in chantry fields in England in April 2010. He says that he discovered a pilgrim's ampulla, which he initially thought was a pile of lead in a field. Another find was a King George III shilling which was dated 1787. Also stated is the discovery of a florin of the late British King Edward VII, which was dated 1907.

AbstractThe Reginald Taylor and Lord Fletcher Prize Essay, 2000 (joint winner)The licence to found the Wilcote Chantry Chapel at North Leigh, Oxfordshire, was granted to Elizabeth Wilcote in 1438 and the building was almost certainly complete by her death in 1445. Few other records of Elizabeth Wilcote's life and patronage survive, but the chapel provides an important source of information about its founder. There are suggestions that Elizabeth was strongly involved in the planning of the chapel, and her choice of craftsmen points to an awareness of the building projects of prominent patrons and a wish to heighten the family status through an emulation of these projects. The chapel also provides an insight into the spiritual world of a member of the 15th-century gentry. The means by which Elizabeth Wilcote chose to commemorate her husbands and sons demonstrates the importance of both prayer and charity to the contemporary doctrine of salvation. As a widow, Elizabeth Wilcote held more freedom than many of her female contemporaries. The chapel's appearance and, indeed, its very existence, results from this freedom of choice. However, the chapel also demonstrates the constraints under which even an unmarried woman lived. Despite her independent status, Elizabeth Wilcote chose to be defined in death, as in life, as wife, widow and mother.

He was educated at the Fort Steilacoom Community College where he began reading graphic trade magazines and got a job as an intern at its in-house graphics department.
