Taking the Maussian gift paradigm as its theoretical framework (to give-to receive-to repay), this article adopts an original approach to analysis of the lived experiences of organ recipients on an individual and psychological level. Clinically oriented interviews with 9 transplant patients and semi-structured interviews with a further 13 patients reveal the existence of four forms of mental processing around organ donations and the existence of a debt in three of these forms. These debts are ambivalent and recipients experience them both positively and negatively. Organ donation seems to fit into the gift paradigm in an original way inasmuch as, instead of repaying it directly, recipients settle their debt by giving back to others and by other means, whether to real people or to their fantasy donor. In order to improve the well-being of transplant patients, recommendations are set out for the biomedical agencies: a humanised donor discourse should be developed alongside the traditional mechanistic discourse around the body and long-term, multifaceted psychological support should be made available for transplant patients and their families. The marketing implications of our research are also put forward with a view to turning transplant patients into promoters of organ donation. The results are also transferred to other social marketing contexts. Finally, the gift exchange paradigm is proposed as a means of enriching marketing fundamentals in a society in which consumers are increasingly searching for connections and meaning beyond the goods and services they consume.

In France, more than 16,000 patients hope to receive a donated organ each year. Only one third of these patients receive transplants and 500 people die before being called for a transplant. However, the number of donations could be increased considerably by encouraging donor card holders to discuss the subject with their families. The objective of this research is to develop a better understanding of discussion behaviours with families regarding a decision to donate one’s organs post mortem. To this end, a quantitative survey was carried out on a broad sample of 11,235 holders of organ donor cards. This work introduces two main contributions in relation to previous work. First, it demonstrates that the intensity of discussions with next-of-kin has an impact on the donor’s confidence in having their wishes respected. Second, it demonstrates the need to take into account individual determinants such as the taboo of death, superstition and extraversion in order to better understand the intensity of discussions with next-of-kin. Our research also confirms the impact of altruism on discussions about organ donation. In light of our results, managerial implications are proposed below.

En France, plus de 16 000 patients espèrent chaque année recevoir un don d’organes, un tiers seulement sont réellement greffés et 500 personnes décèdent avant d’être appelées pour une greffe. Or, on pourrait considérablement améliorer le nombre de dons en incitant les détenteurs de cartes de donneurs à en discuter avec leurs proches. L’objectif de cette recherche est de développer une meilleure compréhension des comportements de discussion avec les proches concernant sa décision de donner ses organes post-mortem. A cet effet, une étude quantitative auprès d’un large échantillon de 11 235 détenteurs d’une carte de « donneurs d’organes » a été réalisée. Par rapport aux travaux antérieurs, ce travail présente deux contributions principales. D’une part, il montre que l’intensité de la discussion avec les proches a un impact sur la confiance du donneur dans le respect de ses volontés. D’autre part, il montre la nécessité de prendre en compte des déterminants individuels tels que le tabou de la mort, la superstition et l’extraversion pour mieux comprendre l’intensité de la discussion entre proches. Notre recherche confirme par ailleurs l’impact de l’altruisme sur le comportement de discussion du don d’organes. A la lumière des résultats, des implications managériales sont proposées.

Cet article discute des travaux sur l'ethnicité en tant que construit social. Il retrace les évolutions de la recherche sur ce thème en proposant de distinguer deux grandes approches qui traduisent des conceptions épistémologiques et méthodologiques différentes. Ces dernières se distinguent selon qu'elles considèrent l'ethnicité comme une caractéristique ou comme une ressource. Les limites des recherches antérieures et les débats contemporains appellent à renouveler la conception de l'ethnicité dans l'étude du consommateur par une plus grande prise en compte des contextes socioculturels et des interactions sociales. La conclusion questionne la responsabilité des marketeurs comme agents de transformation sociale.

This article discusses the work on ethnicity as a social construct. It traces the evolution of research on this theme by proposing to distinguish two major approaches that reflect epistemological and methodological orientations. These approaches are distinguished according to whether they consider ethnicity as a feature or as a resource. The limitations of previous research and contemporary debates call for a renewal of the concept of ethnicity in the study of consumers through greater consideration of socio-cultural contexts and social interaction. The conclusion questions the responsibility of marketers as agents of social transformation.

Pour des produits dont la consommation est familiale, le concept du Nous est proposé comme une variable psychographique de segmentation. Cette recherche tente de montrer comment la marque de voiture préférée par le consommateur exprime l'image qu'il souhaite avoir de sa famille (Nous idéal). Sur la base de l'échelle du Nous idéal, une échelle de l'image de la voiture préférée a été développée (plaisir, standing et à partager). L'étude empirique permet de tester les liens entre les dimensions du Nous idéal et les dimensions de l'image du produit préféré. Le Nous idéal apparaît comme un critère de segmentation pertinent pour analyser les caractéristiques du marché automobile selon le profil souhaité pour la famille (intellectuelle, étayante, modeste, ayant un esprit de découverte).

Cet article présente un concept nouveau pour la littérature marketing : le « concept du nous ». Ce concept est élaboré à partir des travaux de Kaës en psychanalyse et des recherches effectuées en psychologie sur l'identité sociale. Il est défini comme l'image globale qu'une personne se forge de son groupe d'appartenance. Les deux études empiriques qui sont présentées explorent une des trois facettes du concept du nous : le « nous idéal », c'est-à-dire l'image idéale que l'individu attribue à son groupe d'appartenance, pris dans sa globalité (la famille, dans cette recherche). Une structure factorielle du concept en quatre dimensions est proposée et validée sur deux cultures. Les limites, les voies de recherche et implications marketing sont présentées en conclusion.
