InAs quantum-well structures are grown on GaAs(001) by molecular-beam epitaxy. Although the lattice-mismatch stress is released during the heteroepitaxy, as manifested by the appearance of a cross-hatch pattern, the strain field originating from composition grading in the buffer layer prevents the extension of misfit dislocations to the quantum well. The carrier mobility in the electrical conduction is improved in such a circumstance when the irregular height fluctuations generated in the strain relaxation, in addition to the quasi-periodic modulation of the cross-hatch surface, are smoothed out prior to the growth of the quantum wells. The interface fluctuations of the quantum wells imprinted by the random roughness are thus indicated to be more crucial for causing scattering than the latter long-range meandering of the surface. The introduction of the smoothing layer makes the use of less lattice-mismatched but more expensive substrates, such as InP substrates, unimportant.

Abstract: We studied the regularities of distribution of siderophile elements, including platinum group elements (PGE), in rock and in sulfides from Archean (2814 ± 51 Ma) peridotites collected in a fragment of deformed dike within the Bug granulite complex, Ukrainian Shield. In comparison with the primitive mantle, the studied rocks are enriched in Rh, Pd, Ni, Fe, and Co, and are characterized by low concentrations of other PGE. Sulfides are represented by a high-temperature variety of pentlandite and a small amount of chalcopyrite, with an inhomogeneous PGE distribution in them. Pd/Ir ratio typical of superchondrite is revealed for rocks and some sulfides. It is supposed that enrichment in Pd was not resulted from fractionation, but was rather related to mantle metasomatism. Saturation of the melt with sulfides and liquation process were favored by contamination of harzburgite with the host gneissic enderbite and fractionation of olivine. Solid sulfide solutions formed from sulfide melts at temperatures close to the crystallization temperature of magnesium phlogopite from a silicate melt.

Abstract: The comprehensive study (electron microscopy, mass-spectrometry of secondary ions, Raman spectroscopy) of zircon from harzburgite inclusion in granulites of the Bug complex (Ukrainian Shield) is carried out. Based on a number of features, the studied zircons are subdivided into three groups. Zircon from the first group is of igneous genesis and crystallized 2.8 Ga ago at the temperature of about 650°C from a melt of orthopyroxenite composition. Zircon from the second group underwent hydrothermal alteration ca. 2.75 Ga ago at the temperature of about 750°C. Zircon from the third group is distinctive in several geochemical characteristics (higher Lu/Hf ratio, etc.) and formed before the hydrothermal process, but their compositions were altered by the fluid. Conditions of the igneous zircon (first group) crystallization were characterized by the higher \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${{f}_{{{{{\text{O}}}_{{\text{2}}}}}}}$$\end{document}value, compared to the later hydrothermal alteration. The hydrothermal process has provided the distortion of zircon crystal lattice, which is reflected in the Raman spectra, and the formation of amorphous structure in the uranium-rich zircon from the third group. In terms of trace element contents, the first and second zircon groups indicate different initial melts (from which they originated) from the third zircon group; the melt of the third group was more mafic. The obtained results support the idea about the hybrid character of the melt and that the rock formed in two main stages, namely, a magmatic one and fluid alteration, separated in time and having different oxidation-reduction conditions.

A computationally efficient temperature-dependent model for scattering processes in mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers is developed. In this approach, the total intersubband scattering rate is described as the product of the overlap integral for the squared moduli of the envelope functions and a form factor that depends on transition energy, temperature, and material. Both inelastic and elastic scattering processes are included in the treatment. The model is used to calculate the temperature-dependent threshold current density $ {J_{{\rm th}}}(T) $J_th(T) in a 10-period strain-compensated InGaAs–InAlAs mid-infrared quantum cascade laser structure and determine the characteristic temperature $ {T_0} $T_0 in $ {J_{{\rm th}}}(T) = {J_0}\exp {(T/{T_0})} $J_th(T)=J_0exp?(T/T_0). The effect of doping is also modeled.

Ingots of alloys of high-purity chromium with manganese and lanthanum are melted in a furnace with copper mould by induction method. Hardness and temperature of brittle transition of these alloys are studied. It is shown that influence of manganese in alloys depends to great degree on content of lanthanum and conditions of production of ingots. This paper presents the results of a complex study (morphology of grains, internal texture in cathodoluminescence and backscattered electrons, microprobe analysis, Lu–Hf data) of five groups (generations) of zircon crystals differing in age and separated from the same granulite sample pertaining to the Bug River Complex of the Ukrainian Shield. The data show that the oldest zircon crystals of the first group (3.74 Ga in age) are xenogenic and initially crystallized from a granitic melt; zircon of the second group (3.66 Ga) formed from a mafic melt contaminated by felsic country rocks. The third group (3.59 Ga) is represented by zircons that formed about 100 Ma later than the second group under conditions of granulite-facies metamorphism and with the participation of fluid-saturated anatectic melt. Two Paleoproterozoic zircon groups (~2.5 and 2.1 Ga) also formed under granulite-facies conditions; to a certain extent, their structure and composition were controlled by fluid. The geochemistry of all zircon generations provides evidence for their crystallization in the continental crust, but from the sources differing in the contribution of mantle-derived material and in oxygen fugacity.

Multidisciplinary studies of zircons, rock-forming minerals and the whole-rock composition of granulite samples from the Bug Granulite–Gneiss Complex, Ukraine (including ion microprobe REE analysis, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U–Pb and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) Lu–Hf analysis of zircons from a single sample) have revealed three major stages in the geological evolution of the complex. (i) At 3.66 Ga, a mafic intrusion contaminated with felsic rocks formed, as evidenced by 3.74 Ga zircon xenocrysts with inclusions of plagioclase, K-feldspar and quartz. (ii) At 3.59–3.55 Ga, high-temperature and high- to moderate-pressure granulite-facies metamorphism accompanied by migmatization and deformation resulted in the formation of mafic granulites. (iii) At 2.1–2.0 Ga, metamorphic overprinting occurred, and metatrachybasaltic dykes intruded at approximately 2.0 Ga. The metamorphic mineral assemblages recorded in the dykes formed at temperatures similar to those of the 3.59–3.55 Ga metamorphism but at pressures 2–3 kbar lower. This metamorphism disturbed the Sm–Nd whole-rock system, altered the Hf isotope system of the older zircons and resulted in Pb loss in small zircon grains. This complex event history recorded in zircons from a single rock corresponds to major stages of the geological evolution of both the Dniester–Bug Province and the entire Ukrainian Shield.

As the chemical behavior of radiocesium is expected to be almost identical to that of stable Cs, analyses of stable Cs and related stable elements should be useful to understand the long-term behavior of radiocesium and its equilibrium distribution in forest ecosystems. In this study, the concentrations of stable Cs and related alkali and alkaline earth elements in mushrooms, plants and soils were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) or inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Samples were collected in forests with different contamination levels in Japan. Germany, Finland, Italy, Ireland and Belarus. Vertical distributions in soils, and concentrations in mushrooms and plants were summarized for radiocesium and related stable elements. Relationship between radiocesium and stable Cs in mushrooms and plants, and transfer from soil to vegetation were also discussed. The results indicated that the ratio between radiocesium and stable Cs is useful for judging the equilibrium of deposited radiocesium in different parts of a forest ecosystem. The stable Cs analyses might be also useful to predict the long-term radiocesium contamination of mushrooms and plants.

The dependences of neutron depolarization on applied magnetic field are deduced along the magnetization hysteresis loop in terms of the Bean model of the critical state. The depolarization in uniaxial superconductors with the reversible magnetization, including uniaxial magnetic superconductors, is also considered. A strong depolarization is expected if the neutrons travel along the vortex lines.

Neutron depolarization (i.e.the change in the polarization vector projection onto the applied magnetic field) depends on neutron Larmor frequency ωLin the superconductor and on a frequency ω, ω being related to the directional variation of the magnetic induction inside the superconductor. Depolarization is small if η= ωL/ω≫1. In the opposite limite η≪1, the depolarization is due to neutron spin rotation about the magnetic flux, which, in turn, rigidly rotates with a superconductor. a total spin reversal is possible at η= 1. Depolarization at a stationary rotation angle in a superconducting plate carrying a transport critical current in a magnetic field is considered as well. Depolarisation is determined by either longitudinal or transversal critical currents depending on the angle between the applied field and the critical current direction.

Abstract: The geological setting, geochemistry, and Nd isotopic systematics of tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiortite (TTG) series in ancient cratons are considered. It is shown that the TTG series were formed from ∼4.2 to 2.6 Ga ago in the oldest continental cores; many TTG series do not reveal chronological links to greenstone belts. This follows from the evolution of the Slave Craton in the Canadian Shield, the Vodlozero Craton in the Baltic Shield, and the Pilbara and Yilgarn cratons in the Australian Shield, where greenstone associations postdated TTG series. As has been established at the Baltic Shield, the primary melts of the Mesoarchean TTG associations were formed at a shallower depth (P < 15 kbar) compared to the Neoarchean TTG, likely, due to the increasing thickness of the continental crust beneath the Baltic Shield over time. The Nd isotopic composition of worldwide TTG associations indicates that most of them are characterized by a substantial time interval (>150 Ma) that separates the formation of the TTG melts from the age of the source involved in melting. Taking into account the calculated rate of cooling of the lithospheric plates, these data indicate that most Archean TTG series likely were not formed in the convergent subduction-related and accretionary geodynamic settings. The isotopic and geochemical data constrain compositions of the sources that produced Archean TTG series. Petrologic modeling of the formation conditions and Nd isotopic composition of the metabasalts in greenstone belts show that these rocks could not have been the source of TTG series. The most plausible isotopic and geochemical analogue of this source are the Archean amphibolites (ENd mafic rocks), which differ from the metabasalts of greenstone belts by their lower Sm/Nd ratio and enrichment in some lithophile elements. The available data suggest that the primary TTG melts were generated as products of melting of amphibolites and granulites forming the lower crust.

Rates of Down syndrome DS show considerable international variation, but a systematic assessment of this variation is lacking. The goal of this study was to develop and test a method to assess the validity of DS rates in surveillance programs, as an indicator of quality of ascertainment. The proposed method compares the observed number of cases with DS livebirths plus elective pregnancy terminations, adjusted for spontaneous fetal losses that would have occurred if the pregnancy had been allowed to continue in each single year of maternal age, with the expected number of cases based on the bestpublished data on rates by year of maternal age. To test this method we used data from birth years 2000 to 2005 from 32 surveillance programs of the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Surveillance and Research. We computed the adjusted observed versus expected ratio aOE of DS birth prevalence among women 25–44 years old. The aOE ratio was close to unity in 13 programs the 95 confidence interval included 1, above 1 in 2 programs and below 1 in 18 programs P < 0.05. These findings suggest that DS rates internationally can be evaluated simply and systematically, and underscores how adjusting for spontaneous fetal loss is crucial and feasible. The aOE ratio can help better interpret and compare the reported rates, measure the degree of under or overregistration, and promote quality improvement in surveillance programs that will ultimately provide better data for research, service planning, and public health programs. © 2010 WileyLiss, Inc.

Abstract: This work considers geochemical and isotopic characteristics of the source of the Archean Panozero pluton derived from LILEand LREE-enriched lithospheric mantle. Sr and Nd isotopic data on clinopyroxenes and augites define a source with Sri = 0.7017 and ɛNd(t) varying within a narrow range from + 0.7 to + 1.4 (averaging + 1.1), which is close to previously obtained whole-rock isotopic data. Similar ɛNd(t) were obtained for the Archean alkaline rocks of Canada, whereas the Archean mafic rocks of the Baltic and Canadian Shields formed from depleted mantle have ɛNd(t) ∼2. Lead isotope measurements on K-feldspars (KFsp) and monzonite showed that the source of the pluton has μ = 8.98 for the Stacey-Kramers two-stage model, at low U/Pb and high Th/U ratios. Different lead isotope composition corresponding to μ = 10.43 was determined in KFsp from quartz monzonites. Diverse interpretations of obtained data have been proposed. It was noted that the Pb-Pb isotopic system was disturbed by a later (∼ 1.9 Ga) thermal event. The ratios of elements of similar compatibility were used to determine the geochemical specifics of source of the Panozero pluton. Their comparison with numerous literature data on metasomatized mantle xenoliths and minerals in them showed that the mantle source strongly differed from primitive mantle in ratios of elements, whose mineralmelt partitioning coefficients considerably differs from mineral-fluid partitioning, for instance, Nb/La. Mantle source that was responsible for geochemical peculiarities of the Panozero pluton was made up of Phl, CPx, and Ap.

Abstract: This work addresses the isotopic heterogeneity of the Archean lithospheric mantle by the example of high-Mg, moderate-alkali, LILE and LREE-enriched Panozero sanukitoid massif, which is located in the Central Karelia, southeastern Baltic Shield. Initial Nd and Sr isotope characteristics were determined for mantle source of the massif. ɛNd(T) in the source are plotted below DM line, varying from + 0.7 to + 1.4 (+1.1, on average). The 87Sr/86Sr(T) ∼ 0.7017 significantly exceeds that of depleted mantle and reflects change of Rb/Sr ratio in the source due to metasomatic reworking of mantle. Data on Pb isotope composition of potassium feldspars indicate that source of monzonites of the Panozero Massif had lower μ (238U/204Pb) = 8 and higher (238Th/232U) = 4.05 relative to primitive mantle.

Abstract: Geochemical, isotopic-geochemical, and geochronological information was obtained on magmatic rocks from the Saltychan anticlinorium in the Azov domain of the Ukrainian Shield. The rocks affiliate with the calc-alkaline series and a high-Mg series. The rocks of these series notably differ in concentrations of trace elements and REE and range from gabbro to granodiorite-quartz diorite in composition. The NORDSIM ionprobe U-Pb zircons ages of rocks belonging to the Obitochnen Complex and having both elevated and normal mg# correspond to 2908–2940 Ma. The Osipenkovskaya intrusion has an age of 2855 ± 19 Ma. The most alkaline North Obitochnen intrusion was emplaced in the Proterozoic, at 2074 ± 11 Ma. The age of the amphibolite metamorphism of the host gneisses is reliably dated at 3120–3000 Ma. The model Sm-Nd ages of the intrusive rocks do not exceed 3150 Ma. According to geochemical evidence, the parental melts of the magmatic rocks were derived from mantle domains variably enriched in lithophile elements. The results obtained by studying the Sm-Nd isotopic system corroborate the conclusion drawn from geochemical evidence that most of the melts were derived from the mildly enriched mantle, practically without involvement of ancient crustal material. The mantle became enriched in LREE at approximately 3000 Ma, which corresponds to the age of metamorphism of the supracrustal rocks. This process was separated from the derivation of the melts by a time span of 70–80 Ma. The relative age of the intrusive rocks and their variable composition can be most adequately explained by a contribution of heat and material from a plume to the derivation of the parental melts of these rocks.

Abstract: The high-K and high-Mg Panozero central-type intrusion is located on the shore of Lake Segozero, Central Karelia, and has an age of 2737 ± 10 Ma. Detailed mapping and petrological study showed that it was formed in three magmatic cycles that were separated by lamprophyre dikes. The first cycle is composed mainly of mafic rocks (layered complex: pyroxenites-honblendites-monzogabbro) and monzonites 1; the second cycle includes monzonites 2, and the third cycle comprises monzonites 3 and quartz monzonites. The massif is cut by numerous lamprophyre dikes and breccia zones. As compared to calc-alkaline series, the studied rocks are enriched in K, Ba, Sr, P, LREE, have high mg# (mg# = 0.5–0.65), and elevated contents of Cr and Ni. The parent composition of the layered complex was determined to be monzogabbro. Model calculations showed that the compositional variations of the Panozero Complex are consistent with the fractional crystallization of monzogabbro. The melts were fractionated in an intermediate chamber and during the flowing and crystallization of the magma. The parent melt of the intrusion was formed by the partial melting of mantle enriched in some LILE, LREE, and volatiles (CO2 and H2O). The volatile enrichment of the melt manifests itself in the mineral composition of the rocks, the presence of primary gas inclusions in apatite, and diverse structural features. The comparison of the rocks of the Panozero Massif with metasomatized mantle xenoliths in the variation diagrams for incompatible elements showed that the mantle source of the Panozero Complex was metasomatized by fluid consisting of H2O and CO2 of different origin.

Abstract: The Archean provinces and lithotectonic complexes of the Baltic (Fennoscandian) Shield are considered. The supracrustal complexes are classified by age: <3.2, 3.10–2.90, 2.90–2.82, 2.82–2.75, and 2.75–2.65 Ga. The data on Archean granitoid complexes and metamorphic events are mentioned briefly, whereas the recently found fragments of the Archean ophiolitic and eclogite-bearing associations are discussed in more detail. The Paleoarchean rocks and sporadic detrital grains of Paleoarchean zircons have been found in the Baltic Shield; however, the relatively large fragments of the continental crust likely began to form only in the Mesoarchean (3.2–3.1 Ga ago), when the first microcontinents, e.g., Vodlozero and Iisalmi, were created. The main body of the continental crust was formed 2.90–2.65 Ga ago. The available information on the Paleoarchean complexes of the Baltic Shield is thus far too scanty for judgment on their formation conditions. The geologic, petrologic, isotopic, and geochronological data on the Meso-and Neoarchean lithotectonic complexes testify to their formation in the geodynamic settings comparable with those known in Phanerozoic: subduction-related (ensialic and ensimatic), collisional, spreading-related, continental rifting, and the setting related to mantle plumes.

Abstract. Reciprocal probing has been used to identify a cDNA clone (xh8H11) representing a gene preferentially expressed in striated muscle. The gene maps close to DXS7101 31.9 cM from the short arm telomere of the X-chromosome at Xp22.1. On searching expressed and genomic databases, 21 expressed sequence tags were found that allowed the assignment of a human extended consensus sequence of 887 bp, suggesting a completely expressed gene symbolized as SMPX. By using the human consensus sequence, the orthologous mouse Smpx and rat SMPX genes could be aligned and confirmed by complete sequencing of additional SMPX-related clones obtained by library screening. An open reading frame was identified encoding a peptide of 88-86 and 85 amino acids in human and rodents, respectively. The predicted peptide had no significant homologies to known structural elements. The human consensus cDNA sequence was used to define the genomic structure of the human SMPX that had been missed by a previous large scale sequencing approach. The gene consists of five exons (≥172, 57, 84, 148, ≥422 bp) and four introns (3639, 10410, 6052, 31134 bp) comprising together 52.1 kb and is preferentially and abundantly expressed in heart and skeletal muscle. Thus, a novel human gene encoding a small muscular protein that maps to Xp22.1 (SMPX) has been identified and structurally characterized as a basis for further functional analysis.

Some consequences of the effect of environmental factors on the recombination system are dealt with in this paper. There are two components involved — the system of individual adaptation (F-system) and the genetic system of population adaptation (R-system). Their interaction offers an optimum interrelation of immediate adaptivity and genetic flexibility within the population. Familiar data on the evolution of recombination control systems are considered in connection with the problems of induced broadening of genotypic variation spectrum with a view to selection.

Conclusions The possibility is shown of obtaining lightweight refractories with an operational temperature of 1750°C and having a wide range of properties. The use of these refractories depends on the particular requirements and the conditions of service.

A polymorphic CAG repeat was identified in the human α1Avoltage-dependent calcium channel subunit. To test the hypothesis that expansion of this CAG repeat could be the cause of an inherited progressive ataxia, we genotyped a large number of unrelated controls and ataxia patients. Eight unrelated patients with late onset ataxia had alleles with larger repeat numbers (21‐27) compared to the number of repeats (4‐16) in 475 non‐ataxia individuals. Analysis of the repeat length in families of the affected individuals revealed that the expansion segregated with the phenotype in every patient. We identified six isoforms of the human α1Acalcium channel subunit. The CAG repeat is within the open reading frame and is predicted to encode glutamine in three of the isoforms. We conclude that a small polyglutamine expansion in the human α1Acalcium channel is most likely the cause of a newly classified autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxia, SCA6.

We report here the isolation, mapping, and genomic organization of the human NDUFA1 gene, which is a component of NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I). The NDUFA1 cDNA clone and associated genomic cosmid clones were isolated by reciprocal probing of an arrayed human heart cDNA library with a X-chromosome cosmid library and were mapped to Xq24. The NDUFA1 gene, which is highly expressed in human cardiac and skeletal muscle, has an open reading frame of 70 amino acids and shows 80% homology to the bovine MWFE subunit of complex I. By primer extension, the major and minor transcription initiation sites were identified, 99 and 141 nucleotides upstream of the translation initiator ATG, respectively. The NDUFA1 gene is composed of 3 exons and spans about 5.0 kb of genomic DNA. The 5′ region of the NDUFA1 gene (∼450-bp fragment) lacks conventional TATA and CAAT boxes, but it contains several potential binding sites for transcription factors including SP-1, AP-2, NF1, NRF2-like, APRRE, CRE, MyoD1, CArG, MEF-2, and BRE.

Abstract: This article describes a group of optical methods for studying the explosion of shaped charges, including modifications of established methods (slit photorecording, the luminous points method, laser probing) and two new methods — measurement of wave velocities with transducers based on optical fibers and laser visualization of the shaped-charge jet. Optical methods are used to study such jets under laboratory conditions. Characteristic distortions of the symmetry of the detonation front and their effect on the jet are discussed, the probable character of breakup of the jet is established, and the distribution of the jet particles with respect to size is determined along with the maximum values of average limiting tension for copper.

The mixed state of the YBaCu2O6.9 superconducting ceramics is investigated by neutron depolarization (ND). The magnetic flux penetration into superconductor's granules can be described in terms of Bean's critical state model. The field and temperature dependence of the average angle of the vortex line deflection from the direction of the applied magnetic field are determined. In particular, this angle is zero atT/Tc~0.5 andH/Hc2~0.015, which is at the sameT/Tc nearH/Hc2~0.017 for the metalloceramic SnMo6S8 superconductor. The latter is also studied in the present work for comparison with the YBa2Cu3O6.9 sample. TheseH/Hc2 are far below the corresponding values ofH/Hc2 for Nb, Nb-Ta. The creep of the flux line misalignments from the applied field direction is examined.

The recombination frequency (rf) is known to be dependent not only on genetic background, but on the environment as well. In our numerical experiments we examine the role of the dependence of recombination on environment in the evolution of the genetic system. Variable rf-strategies, ensuring mean fitnesses greater than the optimum constant rf*-level, exist in both cyclical and stochastic environments. The conclusion that environment dependent recombination is evolutionary advantageous can be shown to be valid when variation in the frequency of recombination modifiers rather than mean fitness (which implies the concept of group selection) is used as a criterion for strategy comparisons. In this case, an evolutionary advantageous type of variable rf-strategies is the one ensuring restricted genetic variability dispersion in an optimal environment and an increase in released variation with the deterioration of environmental conditions. Another important result is that, taking into account the dependence of recombination on environment, it is possible to account for the maintenance of a higher level of population recombination than that predicted by models with the constant rf-level. On the whole, the data obtained indicate that the direct influence of external factors upon the rf-value could have been a significant factor in the evolution of the genetic system.

Abstract: Significant differences among cage populations ofDrosophila in the dynamics of linkage disequilibrium for marker locib, cn andvg of chromosome 2 have been found at optimum and extreme temperatures. Fifteen generations of selection under extreme conditions considerably increased recombination frequency in thecn-vg region and over the whole of theb-vg interval. From the data obtained it is inferred that recombination-promoting alleles with intermediate expression in the heterozygous state are responsible for these changes.

An absolute chronology which agrees with the field evidence is obtained by plotting values in Rb87/Sr86-Sr87/Sr86 coordinates. All other radioactivity time values are erroneous, except the Rb-Sr determination in moscovite. The contamination of biotites gives the greatest distortions. — M.E. Burgunker.

In this study, the researchers investigated the effects of shared and different first language (L1) background, L1 use amounts, and peer familiarity on the frequency of language‐related episodes (LREs) and task scores in interactive pair work. By exploring these variables in distinct interactions, the authors attempted to obtain a more fine‐grained picture of peer interaction patterns and develop strategies to facilitate short interactive tasks. The study’s recordings of the same‐L1 dyads were translated to explore whether the participants stayed on task and why they used their L1. Forty‐two intermediate students of English as a second language (ESL) from various L1 backgrounds recruited from a U.S. university participated in the study. They were placed into four dyad types: same‐L1/familiar, same‐L1/unfamiliar, different‐L1/familiar, and different‐L1/unfamiliar. Each dyad completed a short interactive spot‐the‐difference task. Peer familiarity positively affected the production of LREs and task scores, but no clear differences were found between the same‐L1 and different‐L1 dyads. The researchers also found evidence that peer familiarity affected the same‐L1 and different‐L1 dyads differently. The dyads stayed on task the entire time, using L1 for task management or vocabulary deliberations. Finally, strong negative correlations were found between L1 use amounts and both LREs and task scores.

MIC and minimum biofilm bactericidal concentration (MBBC) values of eravacycline against 185 staphylococci from periprosthetic joint infections were determined. Staphylococcus aureushad MICs of ≤0.25 μg/ml. MICs for methicillin-susceptible and -resistant Staphylococcus epidermidiswere ≤1 and ≤2 μg/ml, respectively. S. aureusand S. epidermidisMBBC50and MBBC90values were 8 and 16 μg/ml for each, showing poor anti-staphylococcal biofilm activity using the method studied.
