The Middle East is a key region in China’s diplomacy due to its role as the largest supplier of oil to China and its strategic location. China is one of the few foreign powers that have maintained good relations with all countries in the region. However, as the intensifying US–China strategic rivalry spreads to the region, China’s relations with Middle Eastern countries are facing serious challenges.

China needs assistance as it restructures and upgrades its economy. Israel fits the bill as a global powerhouse in technologies and innovation. Besides, China considers Israel a potential node in the Belt and Road Initiative. The United States is concerned about China’s growing investments in key Israeli infrastructure and expanding influence in the Middle East. Israel, like other third parties, is caught between the United States and China as US–China rivalry intensifies.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the rationale, strategies and significance of Chinese investment in the USA and its impact on US–China relations. Design/methodology/approach: Through empirical analysis, this preliminary study examines the rationale, strategies and impact of Chinese investment in the USA. Findings: Chinese investment has promoted economic growth in both countries, but it faces several challenges including security concerns and cultural clashes. Originality/value: This paper is one of the first, comprehensive studies of the topic.

Abstract:Why is China interested in the Middle East? What are China’s strategies to promote its interests in the Middle East? How influential is China in the region? Where do America’s and China’s interests converge and diverge in the Middle East? These are some important yet understudied issues. This paper examines Chinese diplomacy towards the Middle East since the early 1990s, with focus on China’s efforts in obtaining oil, and its fight against separatism and terrorism along its northwestern border. It explores how Chinese activities affect US interests and US-China relations. The paper argues that China’s policy towards the Middle East has primarily been driven by economic concerns so far. As its economic power continues to grow, China is expected to expand its political, diplomatic and cultural influence in the region. Despite their differences on issues such as how to deal with Iran, the United States and China have many common interests in the Middle East such as safeguarding energy security, promoting peace, and combating terrorism.

Abstract:This article examines the lobbying activities of Taiwan and the PRC in the U.S. It analyzes why and how both Taiwan and the PRC have lobbied so hard in the U.S. in recent years to curry favor with the U.S. government and the American public. While Taiwan has traditionally focused its lobbying on the U.S. Congress and the PRC on the Executive branch, both parties have strengthened their efforts in all walks of American life in a fierce lobbying competition. While Taipei has been selling its democracy, Beijing has been selling its market. The two parties are likely to get more actively involved in American politics, especially during an election year. Both sides need to understand that the United States conducts its foreign policy according to its own national interests. The article concludes that the lobbying competition only worsens cross-strait relations, and that the United States, having long been entangled in the PRC-Taiwan dispute, will face a policy dilemma whenever a crisis emerges between the two Chinese parties.

This article surveys and analyzes various views in the United States on America's trade relations with China in general and China's application for membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) in particular. Different opinions can be heard from all sides of the political spectrum, but three distinctive camps can easily be identified in the United States regarding China's WTO membership and America's normal trade relations with China: strong supporters, fierce opponents and those between the extremes.
